Sắp sửa + predicate presents an event as approaching: Thành phố sắp sửa bước vào mùa mưa “The city is about to enter the rainy season.” Its core temporal meaning overlaps strongly with sắp, but the expanded form often sounds more deliberate, staged, or rhetorically weighty. It is frequent in (formal) announcements, news prose, and narrative writing, though it is not banned from conversation.
This register difference is a tendency, not a mathematical rule. In quick (informal) warnings, plain sắp is normally more idiomatic. This page focuses on sắp sửa as a marked way to frame imminence; continuation after a phase is underway belongs on Tiếp Tục and Continuation.
Form, scope, and communicative effect
The neutral construction is:
subject + sắp sửa + predicate
Nhà trường sắp sửa công bố kết quả tuyển sinh.
The school is about to announce the admissions results.
Đoàn tàu sắp sửa rời ga, kính mời hành khách ổn định chỗ ngồi.
The train is about to leave the station; passengers are requested to take their seats.
After months of preparation, the project is about to enter the testing phase.
The following predicate falls under the scope of imminence. Sắp sửa công bố kết quả places the announcement near its onset; sắp sửa hoàn thành dự án places the project near its endpoint because hoàn thành lexicalizes completion.
Nhóm nghiên cứu sắp sửa hoàn thành báo cáo cuối cùng.
The research team is close to completing its final report.
Sắp sửa versus sắp
| Context | Usually preferred | Why |
|---|---|---|
| quick warning: “The glass is about to fall!” | sắp rơi | short, urgent, conversational |
| public announcement | sắp / sắp sửa | sắp sửa gives more deliberate staging |
| news or narrative transition | sắp sửa | marks an approaching phase with rhetorical weight |
| ordinary immediate plan | sắp | neutral everyday imminence |
Cẩn thận, cốc sắp rơi!
Careful, the glass is about to fall!
A far-reaching reform is about to take place throughout the system.
Both forms can be grammatical in both examples, but swapping them changes style. Cốc sắp sửa rơi is heavier than a spontaneous warning; cuộc cải tổ sắp diễn ra is perfectly neutral but loses some staged build-up.
Not a claim of active preparation
Historically and transparently, sửa can suggest preparation in other constructions, but learners should not force a literal “prepare to” meaning into every sắp sửa clause. The grammaticalized sequence can describe an uncontrolled natural event.
The sky has gone dark; a major storm is about to strike.
The storm is not “preparing itself.” The sentence presents its arrival as imminent, with a more dramatic (literary) or news-like effect than plain sắp ập đến.
For deliberate human preparation, Vietnamese can say chuẩn bị + predicate. That construction foregrounds readiness or preparatory action, whereas sắp sửa foregrounds the temporal approach.
Chúng tôi đang chuẩn bị chuyển văn phòng; công ty sắp sửa ký hợp đồng thuê mới.
We are preparing to move offices; the company is about to sign a new lease.
The first clause describes ongoing preparation. The second situates the signing near realization. They may coincide, but they answer different questions.
Reference time and discourse sequencing
Like sắp, sắp sửa is relative to a reference point rather than inherently present-tense. A past-time frame can support an English was about to interpretation.
Đúng lúc buổi lễ sắp sửa bắt đầu, điện trong hội trường vụt tắt.
Just as the ceremony was about to begin, the power in the hall suddenly went out.
The temporal frame đúng lúc and the following past narrative establish the viewpoint. Vietnamese does not need a past form of sắp sửa. Similarly, a dated future frame can make the construction prospective.
According to plan, the factory is about to begin operations at the end of this quarter.
This sentence is appropriate only when the end of the quarter is close enough to support an imminent reading. If the factory will simply begin then, without presenting that date as close, nhà máy sẽ đi vào hoạt động vào cuối quý này is clearer.
Where it sits in the aspect system
| Form | Core contribution |
|---|---|
| đã ăn | eating is already realized |
| đang ăn | eating is in progress |
| sẽ ăn | eating is projected |
| ăn rồi | completion or a changed situation |
| từng đi | going as prior experience |
| mới đến / vừa đến | arrival shortly before the reference point |
| chưa xong | the endpoint is not reached |
| sắp mưa | ordinary imminent rain |
| sắp sửa mưa | imminent rain, deliberately or dramatically staged |
| vẫn chờ | waiting continues |
These forms are not a tense paradigm. Temporal adverbials, lexical aspect, scope, and discourse order cooperate with them. In particular, sắp sửa does not become a “formal future tense”; it keeps the narrower meaning of an event viewed near a boundary.
A short announcement and its effect
Ladies and gentlemen, the program is about to begin. The organizers have opened the hall, the last guests have just arrived, and everyone is taking their seats. Please continue to keep your phones on silent.
The (formal) address makes sắp sửa bắt đầu at home: it ceremonially stages the approaching start. Đã presents the doors' opening as realized, vừa marks the last guests' recent arrival, and đang shows seating in progress. Tiếp tục requests continuation of an existing practice. Replacing the first phrase with sẽ bắt đầu would announce a future event but would not highlight that the threshold is immediately at hand.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating sắp sửa as a formal future auxiliary. It expresses imminence, not any future event.
❌ Năm mươi năm nữa thành phố sắp sửa xây sân bay mới.
Odd in a neutral forecast—fifty years is not presented naturally as imminent.
In fifty years, the city may build a new airport.
2. Assuming sắp sửa always means someone is preparing deliberately. Natural events can be imminent too.
Incorrect reasoning—sắp sửa is grammaticalized and need not imply an intentional preparer.
✅ Theo dự báo, cơn bão sắp sửa đổ bộ vào bờ.
According to the forecast, the storm is about to make landfall.
3. Using đã as a universal past marker inside a past frame. Let the frame establish reference time.
❌ Khi tôi đến, buổi họp đã sắp sửa đã bắt đầu.
Incorrect marker stacking.
When I arrived, the meeting was about to begin.
4. Assuming rồi means the event after sắp sửa is complete. If used, rồi marks the newly relevant imminence.
Incorrect—the train is still just before departure.
✅ Tàu sắp sửa chạy rồi; hành khách vui lòng lên tàu.
The train is about to leave; passengers, please board.
Key Takeaways
- Sắp sửa + predicate presents an event near its relevant boundary.
- Compared with plain sắp, it often adds deliberate, formal, written, or dramatic staging; that is a register tendency, not an absolute ban on conversation.
- Do not confuse imminent realization with active preparation: chuẩn bị foregrounds preparation.
- Context and adverbials locate the reference point; sắp sửa is not a future or past conjugation.
