Thai content questions normally leave the question expression where an answer would occur. Replace คุณนิด with ใคร in คุณนิดโทรมา and the question is ใครโทรมาคะ; replace คุณนิด in คุณโทรหาคุณนิด and it becomes คุณโทรหาใครคะ. The first ใคร is initial because it is the subject, while the second stays after the verb as its object.
English usually fronts who, what, or where and may add do/did. Thai preserves the ordinary clause frame instead. This principle works across several predicate types, but the “ordinary slot” differs with each predicate, and discourse can leave already recoverable material unspoken.
Substitute the question expression for the answer
| Answer frame | Question frame | Requested information |
|---|---|---|
khrai fak khokhwam wai kha
Who left a message? (ordinary-polite subject question, female speaker)
เมื่อเช้าคุณคุยกับใครครับ
muea chao khun khui kap khrai khrap
Who did you speak with this morning? (ordinary-polite object question, male speaker)
ลูกค้าต้องการอะไรเพิ่มคะ
lukkha tongkan arai phoem kha
What else does the customer want? (ordinary-polite object question, female speaker)
The verb remains unchanged. Nothing corresponding to English did marks the second example as past; เมื่อเช้า supplies the time. Thai also has no subject–auxiliary inversion to perform.
Verbal, property, and locative predicates
With an action predicate, ใคร or อะไร occupies the subject, object, or prepositional-complement slot. With a property predicate, the question phrase can ask which entity has the property or how strong the property is. Thai does not insert เป็น merely because English translates the property with be.
ห้องไหนเงียบที่สุดครับ
hong nai ngiap thi sut khrap
Which room is the quietest? (ordinary-polite property question, male speaker)
ห้องประชุมกว้างแค่ไหนคะ
hong prachum kwang khae nai kha
How spacious is the meeting room? (ordinary-polite degree question, female speaker)
คืนนี้คุณพักที่ไหนครับ
khuen ni khun phak thi nai khrap
Where are you staying tonight? (ordinary-polite location question, male speaker)
In ห้องไหน, ไหน follows the noun whose identity is requested. In แค่ไหน, it is part of a degree expression. These are different structures even though English uses a fronted wh-expression in both translations.
Known-entity location uses อยู่, and the requested place normally follows it or the locative expression it completes.
แฟ้มสัญญาอยู่ตรงไหนคะ
faem sanya yu trong nai kha
Where is the contract folder? (ordinary-polite locative question, female speaker)
The natural answer may omit the known folder: อยู่ในตู้ข้างหน้าต่างครับ “It is in the cabinet beside the window.” Thai packages the answer around the location predicate rather than restoring an obligatory English-style pronoun.
Copular and existential questions
Thai does not have one general equivalent of English be. Class membership commonly uses เป็น, exact identification uses คือ, location uses อยู่, and existence or availability uses มี. The question expression stays in the complement position selected by that predicate.
ผู้หญิงในรูปคือใครคะ
phuying nai rup khue khrai kha
Who is the woman in the picture? (ordinary-polite exact-identification question, female speaker)
พี่ชายคุณทำงานเป็นอะไรครับ
phi chai khun tham ngan pen arai khrap
What does your older brother do for work? (ordinary-polite role question, male speaker)
ในลิ้นชักมีอะไรบ้างคะ
nai linchak mi arai bang kha
What is there in the drawer? (ordinary-polite existential question, female speaker; asks for a possibly plural list)
แถวสถานีมีร้านขายยาที่เปิดดึกอยู่ตรงไหนบ้างครับ
thaeo sathani mi ran khai ya thi poet duek yu trong nai bang khrap
Where around the station are there pharmacies that stay open late? (ordinary-polite existential/location question, male speaker)
The last two illustrate an important limit to one-to-one translation. อะไรบ้าง invites a list of things, while ที่ไหน...บ้าง ranges over relevant places. A Thai question word is not permanently tied to exactly one English category; its construction and the answer set determine the reading.
Time, reason, and manner have their own distributions
Time expressions can occur in more than one clause position, so เมื่อไร is possible after the event or in an established time frame. The clause-final position is a reliable neutral model.
ร้านจะย้ายไปสาขาใหม่เมื่อไรคะ
ran cha yai pai sakha mai muearai kha
When will the shop move to the new branch? (ordinary-polite time question, female speaker)
ทำไม asks for a reason rather than replacing a noun participant, and it commonly frames the clause at the beginning. Clause-final ทำไม occurs in conversation, but it often sounds more challenging, surprised, or like a follow-up.
ทำไมวันนี้รถติดกว่าปกติครับ
tham mai wan ni rot tit kwa pakati khrap
Why is traffic worse than usual today? (ordinary-polite information question, male speaker)
วันนี้รถติดกว่าปกติทำไมคะ
wan ni rot tit kwa pakati tham mai kha
Why is traffic worse than usual today? (conversational follow-up; more surprised or challenging, female speaker)
For method, conversational ยังไง often follows the event: เปิดไฟล์นี้ยังไง “How do you open this file?” The more formal spelling and register is อย่างไร (formal), frequent in writing and careful speech.
Topic–comment questions and omission
A topic can precede a complete question comment. The question expression still occupies its ordinary position inside that comment.
ส่วนวันศุกร์ คุณสะดวกกี่โมงคะ
suan wan suk khun saduak ki mong kha
As for Friday, what time is convenient for you? (ordinary-polite topic–comment question, female speaker)
เรื่องใบเสร็จ ต้องติดต่อใครครับ
rueang bai set tong titto khrai khrap
Regarding the receipt, who should I contact? (ordinary-polite topic–comment question, male speaker; speaker omitted)
The initial phrases establish a time frame or domain; they are not fronted answers to the question. Inside the second comment, the subject is zero because the conversational speaker is recoverable. This interaction explains why natural Thai questions may look shorter than their English translations: order locates the unknown, while discourse supplies familiar participants.
By contrast, อะไรนะคะ “What was that?” is an elliptical echo or repair question. Its initial position does not license neutral อะไรคุณสั่งคะ for “What did you order?” Marked fragments must not be turned into a general fronting rule.
Do not add ไหม to a direct content question
ไหม requests a yes/no judgment. A direct wh-question requests a person, thing, place, or value, so it does not also need ไหม.
คุณได้คุยกับใครไหมคะ
khun dai khui kap khrai mai kha
Did you manage to speak with anyone? (ordinary-polite polar question; ใคร has an indefinite reading, female speaker)
This does not mean “Who did you speak with?” The presence of ไหม changes ใคร toward “someone/anyone” and changes the expected answer to yes or no. See the fuller question-word position guide.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two colleagues are arranging a site visit.
พรุ่งนี้เราต้องไปพบใครคะ
phrung ni rao tong pai phop khrai kha
Who do we need to meet tomorrow? (ordinary-polite object question, female speaker)
พบหัวหน้าช่างครับ เขาอยู่ที่อาคารไหนนะครับ
phop huana chang khrap khao yu thi akhan nai na khrap
The chief technician. Which building is he in again? (ordinary-polite answer and reminder question, male speaker)
อยู่ตึกบีค่ะ นัดไว้กี่โมงคะ
yu tuek bi kha nat wai ki mong kha
He is in Building B. What time is the appointment? (ordinary-polite answer and time question, female speaker; known person omitted)
สิบโมงครับ ไปถึงก่อนสักสิบนาทีก็ดี
sip mong khrap pai thueng kon sak sip nathi ko di
Ten o'clock. It would be good to arrive about ten minutes early. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)
Each reply supplies only the requested value and any genuinely new information. Repeating every subject and object would be grammatical but needlessly heavy.
Common Mistakes
1. Fronting an object question word like English
❌ อะไรคุณกำลังหาอยู่คะ
Incorrect neutral order—อะไร belongs after the predicate as the object being sought.
✅ คุณกำลังหาเอกสารอะไรอยู่คะ
khun kamlang ha ekkasan arai yu kha
What document are you looking for? (ordinary-polite object question, female speaker)
2. Adding English-style do-support
❌ ทำคุณกลับบ้านเมื่อไรครับ
Incorrect—ทำ is a lexical verb, not an auxiliary equivalent of English ‘do.’
✅ วันนี้คุณจะกลับบ้านเมื่อไรครับ
wan ni khun cha klap ban muearai khrap
When will you go home today? (ordinary-polite time question, male speaker)
3. Using เป็น with a plain property
❌ ห้องไหนเป็นเงียบกว่าคะ
Incorrect—เงียบ is already a property predicate and does not need เป็น.
✅ ห้องพักห้องไหนเงียบกว่ากันคะ
hong phak hong nai ngiap kwa kan kha
Which guest room is quieter? (ordinary-polite property question, female speaker)
4. Adding ไหม to request a specific identity
❌ เมื่อกี้คุณเจอใครไหมครับ
Wrong for intended ‘Who did you meet?’—this asks whether you met anyone.
✅ เมื่อกี้คุณเจอเพื่อนคนไหนครับ
muea ki khun choe phuean khon nai khrap
Which friend did you meet just now? (ordinary-polite identity question, male speaker)
5. Treating every English where as bare ไหน
❌ คุณจอดรถไหนคะ
Incorrect for neutral ‘Where did you park?’—the location expression needs ที่ไหน here.
✅ คุณจอดรถไว้ที่ไหนคะ
khun chot rot wai thi nai kha
Where did you park the car? (ordinary-polite location question, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Keep a Thai question expression in the slot its answer would fill. Subject ใคร is naturally initial; objects and locative complements usually follow their predicates; copulas and มี select their own question complements; and classifier expressions retain classifier order. Topic frames and zero arguments can surround that core, while echo fragments, flexible time phrases, and reason ทำไม account for marked alternatives.
