สำหรับ and Benefactive or Topic Frames

สำหรับ often corresponds to English for, but it does not simply mark every beneficiary. At the beginning of a clause it establishes a perspective or domain; beside a noun or predicate it often marks intended use, suitability, or allocation. Position and predicate type tell the listener which relation is intended.

For a fuller discourse analysis of the first pattern, see สำหรับ as a topic frame; this page concentrates on how position distinguishes that frame from benefactive and intended-use relations.

A frame for perspective or domain

Clause-initial สำหรับ + noun phrase tells the listener, “Interpret the following comment within this person’s situation, standards, or domain.” The framed noun is not automatically the grammatical subject.

สำหรับฉัน ร้านนี้แพงไปหน่อยค่ะ

samrap chan ran ni phaeng pai noi kha

For me, this restaurant is a little too expensive. (ordinary polite opinion, female speaker)

สำหรับงานด้านความปลอดภัย บริษัทกำหนดให้พนักงานเข้ารับการอบรมทุกปี

samrap ngan dan khwam plotphai borisat kamnot hai phanakngan khao rap kan oprom thuk pi

For safety-related work, the company requires employees to undergo training every year. (formal policy statement)

The actor of กำหนด in the second example is บริษัท, not งานด้านความปลอดภัย. English speakers often misread the first noun phrase as a subject because English demands overt subjects more consistently. Thai uses a topic frame plus a complete comment.

💡
Pause naturally after a clause-initial สำหรับ phrase. In writing, a comma may help with a long frame, but Thai grammar does not require English punctuation after every introductory phrase.

Intended user, suitability, and allocation

After a noun, สำหรับ + noun phrase narrows what that item is designed, reserved, or appropriate for. After a predicate, it can identify an intended user or beneficiary.

ชั้นนี้เป็นพื้นที่สำหรับผู้โดยสารที่มีเด็กเล็กค่ะ

chan ni pen phuen thi samrap phu doisan thi mi dek lek kha

This floor is an area for passengers with small children. (formal public information, female voice)

ผมจองโต๊ะริมหน้าต่างไว้สำหรับคุณสองคนครับ

phom chong to rim natang wai samrap khun song khon khrap

I reserved a table by the window for you two. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)

คู่มือนี้เหมาะสำหรับคนที่เพิ่งเริ่มทำงานค่ะ

khu mue ni mo samrap khon thi phoeng roem tham ngan kha

This guide is suitable for people who have just started working. (neutral recommendation, female speaker)

The same person can be understood differently according to position:

สำหรับคุณยาย ห้องชั้นล่างสะดวกกว่าค่ะ

samrap khun yai hong chan lang saduak kwa kha

For Grandma, the downstairs room is more convenient. (ordinary polite evaluation, female speaker)

เราเตรียมห้องชั้นล่างไว้สำหรับคุณยายค่ะ

rao triam hong chan lang wai samrap khun yai kha

We prepared the downstairs room for Grandma. (ordinary polite; intended user, female speaker)

A gift selected with someone in mind takes สำหรับ; the act of transferring it to that person takes ให้.

ฉันเลือกของขวัญชิ้นนี้สำหรับพี่สาวค่ะ

chan lueak khongkhwan chin ni samrap phi sao kha

I chose this gift for my older sister. (ordinary polite; intended recipient, female speaker)

เมื่อเช้าฉันเอาของขวัญให้พี่สาวแล้วค่ะ

muea chao chan ao khongkhwan hai phi sao laeo kha

I gave the gift to my older sister this morning. (ordinary polite; completed transfer, female speaker)

เพื่อ profiles the purpose motivating an action, whereas สำหรับ classifies something by intended use or user.

บริษัทจัดห้องนี้สำหรับการสัมภาษณ์งานค่ะ

borisat chat hong ni samrap kan samphat ngan kha

The company designated this room for job interviews. (formal-neutral; intended use, female voice)

ผู้สมัครมาถึงก่อนเวลาเพื่อเตรียมเอกสารครับ

phu samak ma thueng kon wela phuea triam ekkasan khrap

The applicant arrived early to prepare the documents. (formal-neutral; purpose, male voice)

Contrast with ส่วน and เรื่อง

ส่วน + topic sets one participant against another: “as for X (in contrast).” สำหรับ + topic supplies a viewpoint or relevance frame without requiring a contrast. เรื่อง + noun means “regarding the matter of” and frames subject matter, not an evaluator.

ส่วนห้องใหญ่ เราจะเก็บไว้รับแขกค่ะ

suan hong yai rao cha kep wai rap khaek kha

As for the large room, we'll keep it for guests. (ordinary polite contrast, female speaker)

สำหรับครอบครัวเรา ห้องใหญ่น่าจะพอดีครับ

samrap khropkhrua rao hong yai na cha phodi khrap

For our family, the large room should be about right. (ordinary polite evaluation, male speaker)

เรื่องห้องประชุม ผมจะโทรไปยืนยันพรุ่งนี้ครับ

rueang hong prachum phom cha tho pai yuenyan phrung ni khrap

Regarding the meeting room, I'll call to confirm tomorrow. (ordinary polite subject-matter frame, male speaker)

💡
There is no article hidden inside สำหรับ. A following noun can be generic, definite, or newly introduced; classifiers and context establish that separately.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

มีเมนูสำหรับคนที่ไม่กินเนื้อไหมคะ

mi menu samrap khon thi mai kin nuea mai kha

Do you have a menu for people who don't eat meat? (ordinary polite question, female customer)

มีครับ เมนูสีเขียวมีแต่อาหารมังสวิรัติ

mi khrap menu si khiao mi tae ahan mangsawirat

Yes. The green menu contains only vegetarian dishes. (ordinary polite reply, male staff member)

สำหรับเด็ก มีจานเล็กไหมคะ

samrap dek mi chan lek mai kha

For children, do you have small plates? (ordinary polite follow-up, female customer)

มีครับ เดี๋ยวผมเอามาให้สองใบ

mi khrap diao phom ao ma hai song bai

Yes. I'll bring you two. (ordinary polite reply, male staff member; recipient recovered)

Common Mistakes

1. Using สำหรับ for a simple transfer recipient

❌ ผมส่งใบสมัครสำหรับฝ่ายบุคคลแล้วครับ

Wrong for the intended actual recipient; this sounds more like an application intended for HR.

✅ ผมส่งใบสมัครให้ฝ่ายบุคคลแล้วครับ

phom song bai samak hai fai bukkhon laeo khrap

I sent the application to human resources. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

2. Confusing intended use with purpose

❌ ผมรีบกลับบ้านสำหรับดูแลลูกครับ

Incorrect purpose linkage—สำหรับ does not introduce this controlled goal predicate.

✅ ผมรีบกลับบ้านเพื่อดูแลลูกครับ

phom rip klap ban phuea dulae luk khrap

I hurried home to look after my child. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)

3. Treating the topic frame as the subject

❌ สำหรับงานประชุมเตรียมเอกสารเสร็จแล้วค่ะ

Unclear—the topic frame does not tell us who prepared the documents.

✅ สำหรับงานประชุม ฝ่ายธุรการเตรียมเอกสารเสร็จแล้วค่ะ

samrap ngan prachum fai thurakan triam ekkasan set laeo kha

For the meeting, the administrative team has finished preparing the documents. (formal-neutral report, female voice)

4. Using ส่วน when no contrast is intended

❌ ส่วนผม วิธีนี้เข้าใจง่ายที่สุดครับ

Misleading without an active contrast; ส่วน invites comparison with another person's view.

✅ สำหรับผม วิธีนี้เข้าใจง่ายที่สุดครับ

samrap phom withi ni khao chai ngai thi sut khrap

For me, this method is the easiest to understand. (ordinary polite opinion, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Clause-initial สำหรับ X frames a perspective or domain; it does not make X the subject.
  • Postposed สำหรับ X commonly marks suitability, allocation, intended use, or intended beneficiary.
  • Use ให้ for actual transfer/recipient structure and เพื่อ for purpose.
  • Choose ส่วน only for active contrast and เรื่อง for a subject-matter frame.
