เพื่อ for Purpose and Intended Beneficiary

เพื่อ presents a goal: the state of affairs that motivates an action. It may introduce an action with a recovered actor, a full desired-result clause with ให้, an abstract noun, or an intended beneficiary. Crucially, a purpose is intended, not guaranteed to happen.

The broader clause syntax is developed on the purpose clauses page; here the focus is the relator's complement types and its contrast with beneficiary and recipient marking.

A controlled action: เพื่อ + predicate

When the actor of the purpose is the same as the understood actor of the main clause, Thai normally uses เพื่อ + predicate without repeating a pronoun. This resembles an English infinitive in translation, but Thai has no infinitive form: control and word order identify the actor.

ผมเก็บเงินทุกเดือนเพื่อซื้อคอมพิวเตอร์ใหม่ครับ

phom kep ngoen thuk duean phuea sue khomphiotoe mai khrap

I save money every month to buy a new computer. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)

เธอปิดประตูเบา ๆ เพื่อไม่ให้รบกวนคนที่หลับอยู่ค่ะ

thoe pit pratu bao bao phuea mai hai ropkuan khon thi lap yu kha

She closed the door quietly so as not to disturb the person sleeping. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

The second example uses เพื่อไม่ให้ + predicate because the desired prevention is packaged with causative/resultative ให้. Simple controlled negation can also be เพื่อไม่ + verb, especially when the same actor deliberately refrains from an action.

ผมจดหมายเลขไว้เพื่อไม่ลืมครับ

phom chot mai lek wai phuea mai luem khrap

I wrote the number down so I wouldn't forget it. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)

A desired situation: เพื่อให้ + clause

Use เพื่อให้ when the goal is a situation brought about by the main action, especially when the goal clause has its own overt subject. ให้ opens the desired-result frame.

เราเลื่อนเวลาออกไปเพื่อให้ทุกคนเดินทางมาได้ค่ะ

rao luean wela ok pai phuea hai thuk khon doen thang ma dai kha

We moved the time later so that everyone could get here. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker)

ทางโรงพยาบาลเพิ่มจุดลงทะเบียนเพื่อให้ผู้ป่วยรอน้อยลง

thang rongphayaban phoem chut long thabian phuea hai phu puai ro noi long

The hospital added registration points so that patients would wait less. (formal informational statement)

Purpose does not assert success:

เขานั่งแท็กซี่เพื่อให้ทันเที่ยวบิน แต่รถติดหนักมากค่ะ

khao nang thaeksi phuea hai than thiao bin tae rot tit nak mak kha

He took a taxi to catch the flight, but traffic was very heavy. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker; success is not asserted)

English so that can introduce either purpose or consequence. Thai เพื่อให้ requires a goal-oriented interpretation; an accidental outcome takes a result linker such as เลย or จึง.

💡
Use the intention test: could an actor reasonably aim at the following situation? If not, เพื่อ is probably the wrong relation.
💡
Do not add จะ merely because English uses “will” in a purpose translation. Thai purpose clauses normally leave time to the main event and context; จะ appears only when its prospective meaning is independently needed.

Abstract goals and beneficiaries

เพื่อ + noun presents an abstract goal or cause supported: เพื่อความปลอดภัย “for safety,” เพื่อการศึกษา “for education,” เพื่อประโยชน์ส่วนรวม “for the public interest.” This shape is frequent in formal notices, institutional writing, and advocacy.

กรุณาตรวจสอบข้อมูลอีกครั้งเพื่อความถูกต้องค่ะ

karuna truat sop khomun ik khrang phuea khwam thuk tong kha

Please check the information again for accuracy. (formal-polite instruction, female voice)

รายได้จากงานนี้จะนำไปใช้เพื่อการอนุรักษ์ป่าครับ

rai dai chak ngan ni cha nam pai chai phuea kan anurak pa khrap

The proceeds from this event will be used for forest conservation. (formal announcement, male voice)

A person or group after เพื่อ is the one whose welfare motivates the action—not necessarily the immediate recipient.

แม่ทำงานหนักเพื่อครอบครัวมาตลอดค่ะ

mae tham ngan nak phuea khropkhrua ma talot kha

Mother has always worked hard for the family. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)

โครงการนี้สร้างขึ้นเพื่อเด็กในพื้นที่ห่างไกลครับ

khrongkan ni sang khuen phuea dek nai phuen thi hang klai khrap

This project was created for children in remote areas. (formal-neutral statement, male voice)

เพื่อ, สำหรับ, and ให้

FormProfilesExample shape
เพื่อ + goalmotivation or intended outcomeเรียนเพื่อทำงาน
สำหรับ + user/usesuitability, allocation, perspectiveหลักสูตรสำหรับพนักงานใหม่
ให้ + recipienttransfer, benefactive, caused eventส่งเอกสารให้พนักงาน

เราเปิดหลักสูตรนี้เพื่อพัฒนาทักษะการสื่อสารค่ะ

rao poet lak sut ni phuea phatthana thaksa kan sue san kha

We launched this course to develop communication skills. (formal-neutral; purpose, female voice)

หลักสูตรนี้สำหรับพนักงานที่ต้องคุยกับลูกค้าค่ะ

lak sut ni samrap phanakngan thi tong khui kap luk kha kha

ฝ่ายอบรมส่งตารางเรียนให้พนักงานแล้วค่ะ

fai oprom song tarang rian hai phanakngan laeo kha

The training department has sent the schedule to the employees. (formal-neutral; actual recipients, female voice)

Placement and scope

Purpose normally follows the action it explains. A fronted purpose phrase is possible in formal prose, announcements, and carefully organized speech; it gives the goal scope over the whole following clause.

เพื่อประหยัดเวลา กรุณาเตรียมสำเนาเอกสารมาก่อนค่ะ

phuea prayat wela karuna triam samna ekkasan ma kon kha

To save time, please prepare copies of the documents beforehand. (formal-polite instruction, female voice)

Negation placement changes scope. ไม่ได้ทำ X เพื่อ Y denies Y as the purpose; ทำ X เพื่อไม่ให้ Y asserts X and makes prevention of Y the goal.

Certainly. Do I need to attach a copy of my identity card too? (ordinary polite question, male patient)

Common Mistakes

1. Repeating the controlled subject

❌ ฉันไปธนาคารเพื่อฉันเปิดบัญชีค่ะ

Unnatural English-style repetition—the purpose actor is already recovered from ฉัน.

✅ ฉันไปธนาคารเพื่อเปิดบัญชีค่ะ

chan pai thanakhan phuea poet banchi kha

I went to the bank to open an account. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)

2. Omitting ให้ before a new actor

❌ เราเปิดไฟไว้เพื่อแขกเห็นทางค่ะ

Unnatural neutral structure—the guests are the actor of the desired situation.

✅ เราเปิดไฟไว้เพื่อให้แขกเห็นทางค่ะ

rao poet fai wai phuea hai khaek hen thang kha

We left the light on so the guests could see the way. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

3. Using purpose for an accidental result

❌ ฝนตกหนักเพื่อให้ถนนน้ำท่วมค่ะ

Incorrect—the rain did not intend the flooding.

✅ ฝนตกหนัก ถนนเลยน้ำท่วมค่ะ

fon tok nak thanon loei nam thuam kha

It rained heavily, so the road flooded. (ordinary polite result report, female speaker)

4. Marking an actual recipient with เพื่อ

❌ ผมยื่นเอกสารเพื่อเจ้าหน้าที่แล้วครับ

Wrong for a completed handover; เจ้าหน้าที่ is the recipient, not the motivating goal.

✅ ผมยื่นเอกสารให้เจ้าหน้าที่แล้วครับ

phom yuen ekkasan hai chao nathi laeo khrap

I handed the documents to the officer. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Use เพื่อ + predicate when the purpose actor is recovered from the main clause.
  • Use เพื่อให้ + clause for a desired situation, especially with a different actor.
  • เพื่อ + noun/person marks an abstract goal or the welfare motivating an action.
  • Purpose is intention, not achieved result; placement of negation determines what is denied or prevented.
