Thai on social media is not one register. A private chat between close friends, a comment to a stranger, a personal caption, and an institutional announcement make different choices about pronouns, particles, spelling, and sentence density. Conversational writing represents interaction, but public writing must still keep sources, participants, and practical details recoverable. Compare this range with the wider continuum in Spoken Thai and Written Thai.
A continuum, not a separate grammar
Private chat often resembles speech: subjects and objects are omitted after they become obvious, turns are short, and particles display the relationship. Public posts can retain that warmth, yet organizations normally identify themselves, dates, conditions, and contact channels more explicitly.
| Context | Typical opening | Reference and particles |
|---|---|---|
| close-friend chat | ถึงแล้วนะ | heavy omission; relational particles common |
| polite direct message | สวัสดีค่ะ ขอสอบถาม... | role/name where needed; ครับ/ค่ะ/คะ |
| personal public post | วันนี้ลอง... | writer often omitted; stance remains personal |
| institutional post | ทางศูนย์ขอแจ้งว่า... | explicit source, schedule, conditions |
ถึงแล้วนะ รออยู่หน้าร้าน
thueng laeo na ro yu na ran
I'm here—waiting in front of the shop. (informal chat; I is recoverable)
เดี๋ยวทักไปอีกทีตอนเลิกงาน
diao thak pai ik thi ton loek ngan
I'll message you again when I finish work. (informal chat; speaker and recipient omitted)
สวัสดีค่ะ ขอสอบถามว่าสินค้ารุ่นนี้ยังมีอยู่ไหมคะ
sawatdi kha kho soptham wa sinkha run ni yang mi yu mai kha
Hello. May I ask whether this model is still available? (polite customer direct message, female writer)
English requires overt subjects in these messages. Thai uses the active conversation to recover “I,” “you,” and “it.” Adding every pronoun is grammatical in isolation but can sound unnatural or contrastive online.
Particles carry social stance in writing
Conversational particles are visible cues to tone. นะ softens or invites alignment, สิ can encourage or insist, เลย adds immediacy or emphasis, and ครับ/ค่ะ/คะ index polite interaction. Their effect depends on the whole relationship; deleting a particle does not automatically make a message rude, and adding one does not repair an unclear demand.
ฝากส่งลิงก์ให้ด้วยนะ
fak song ling hai duai na
Please send me the link too, okay? (informal friendly request)
ลองเปิดใหม่ดูสิ น่าจะใช้ได้แล้ว
long poet mai du si na cha chai dai laeo
Try opening it again; it should work now. (informal helpful suggestion)
เจอร้านนี้แล้วอยากไปเลย
choe ran ni laeo yak pai loei
I found this place and immediately wanted to go. (informal personal post)
ส่งเลขคำสั่งซื้อมาทางแชตได้เลยค่ะ
song lek kham sang sue ma thang chaet dai loei kha
You can send the order number through chat. (polite service reply, female writer)
Standard คะ marks a question or certain unstressed address uses, while ค่ะ normally marks a statement. Social media contains many misspellings, but frequency does not make ค่ะ/คะ interchangeable in careful writing.
Playful spellings and recognition
Writers may lengthen a final spelling to represent warmth, reluctance, excitement, or drawn-out speech: น้า, จ้าา, มากกก. 555 represents laughter because Thai reads the digit 5 as ห้า. Spellings such as คับ for ครับ and เค้า for เขา also occur (informal). They index a voice or community; they are not neutral substitutes for standard forms.
ขอบคุณน้า ไว้เจอกัน
khop khun na wai choe kan
Thaaanks—see you later. (informal affectionate spelling)
วันนี้รถติดมากกก
wan ni rot tit mak
The traffic is sooo bad today. (informal emphatic spelling)
ลืมกุญแจอีกแล้ว 555
luem kunchae ik laeo ha ha ha
I forgot my keys again, hahaha. (informal online laughter)
For safe active use, write standard ครับ, เขา, and normal spelling until you understand the relationship and local style. Playful spelling can sound intimate, childish, teasing, or sarcastic outside its original setting. It should not appear in an academic submission, contract, job application, or formal complaint.
Vocabulary, borrowing, and compact turns
Digital interaction uses established borrowings such as โพสต์, แชร์, แชต, and ลิงก์, alongside Thai verbs such as ทัก “message/greet,” กด “press/click,” and ติดตาม “follow.” These verbs behave like Thai predicates: they do not conjugate, and their participants can be omitted under continuity.
เมื่อกี้โพสต์ผิด เลยลบแล้ว
muea ki phot phit loei lop laeo
I posted the wrong thing just now, so I deleted it. (informal post or chat; subject and object omitted)
ถ้าเห็นประกาศนี้ ฝากแชร์ต่อด้วยนะ
tha hen prakat ni fak chae to duai na
If you see this announcement, please share it onward. (informal public appeal)
กดติดตามไว้ เดี๋ยวมีข่าวแล้วจะแจ้ง
kot tittam wai diao mi khao laeo cha chaeng
Follow the account; I'll post an update when there is news. (informal social-media instruction)
Short turns can be complete discourse moves even without a complete written-prose clause: ได้เลย, จริงเหรอ, ยังเลย, เดี๋ยวนะ. Do not analyze them as defective English sentences. Thai licenses extensive omission when the missing material is active in context.
Public posts need explicit anchors
An institution can use approachable vocabulary without sacrificing reference. State who is announcing, what changes, when it takes effect, and where readers can ask questions. Avoid assuming that every reader saw an earlier post.
ทางห้องสมุดขอแจ้งว่าจะปิดบริการชั้นสองในวันเสาร์นี้เพื่อปรับปรุงพื้นที่
thang hongsamut kho chaeng wa cha pit borikan chan song nai wan sao ni phuea prapprung phuen thi
The library announces that its second floor will be closed this Saturday for renovations. (institutional social-media post)
ผู้ที่จองห้องไว้สามารถติดต่อเจ้าหน้าที่ทางข้อความส่วนตัวได้ค่ะ
phu thi chong hong wai samat titto chaonathi thang khokhwam suan tua dai kha
Anyone who reserved a room can contact staff by private message. (polite institutional reply, female voice)
The second example has a particle because it is a person-facing reply. A formal notice can omit it. The topic alone does not select the register; audience and interaction do.
Ordinary-polite dialogue about a post
โพสต์ของร้านควรเขียนว่าปิดวันนี้หรือหยุดให้บริการวันนี้ดีครับ
phot khong ran khuan khian wa pit wan ni rue yut hai borikan wan ni di khrap
Should the shop's post say ‘closed today’ or ‘service suspended today’? (male colleague, ordinary polite speech)
เขียนว่าปิดวันนี้ก็ชัดค่ะ แล้วเพิ่มว่าจะเปิดตามปกติพรุ่งนี้
khian wa pit wan ni ko chat kha laeo phoem wa cha poet tam pakati phrung ni
‘Closed today’ is clear; then add that normal opening resumes tomorrow. (female colleague, ordinary polite speech)
This dialogue favors the shorter everyday verb ปิด because clarity, not maximum formality, is the goal.
Common Mistakes
Forcing every English pronoun into a chat
❌ ฉันถึงแล้ว ฉันรอเธออยู่หน้าร้าน เธอเห็นฉันไหม
Overexplicit and contrastive for an established two-person chat.
✅ ถึงแล้วนะ รออยู่หน้าร้าน เห็นไหม
thueng laeo na ro yu na ran hen mai
I'm here, waiting in front of the shop. Can you see me? (natural informal chat)
Treating a playful spelling as neutral polite Thai
❌ เรียนผู้อำนวยการ คับ ผมแนบเอกสารแล้ว
Register and spelling mismatch: คับ is not standard in a formal email.
✅ เรียนผู้อำนวยการครับ ผมแนบเอกสารแล้ว
rian phu amnuai kan khrap phom naep ekkasan laeo
Dear Director, I have attached the documents. (standard polite writing, male writer)
Assuming omission is always clear
❌ บอกแล้วว่าจะส่งพรุ่งนี้
Unclear in a public thread with several participants: who told whom, and who will send it?
✅ ทางร้านแจ้งลูกค้าแล้วว่าจะส่งสินค้าให้พรุ่งนี้
thang ran chaeng lukkha laeo wa cha song sinkha hai phrung ni
The shop has informed the customer that it will send the product tomorrow. (participants restored)
Copying dense official language into friendly chat
❌ ตามที่ท่านได้แจ้งความประสงค์รับประทานอาหารร่วมกันนั้น จึงขอเรียนยืนยันกำหนดเวลา
Comically bureaucratic for confirming dinner with a friend.
✅ เจอกันหนึ่งทุ่มนะ
choe kan nueng thum na
See you at seven, okay? (informal chat; dinner is already established)
Key Takeaways
- Identify the audience: private chat, public comment, personal post, and institutional post require different explicitness.
- Omit active participants naturally, but restore them when a wider audience could misread the reference.
- Particles and playful spelling convey stance; they do not have one fixed emotional translation.
- Recognize online variants, while using standard spelling for neutral polite and professional communication.
