Thai invitations range from a casual proposal to a ceremonial request for attendance. The words do not merely describe a future event: they negotiate whether the listener wants and is able to participate. Relationship, turn design, final particles, intonation, and the reply sequence determine how much pressure the invitation carries.
English speakers must avoid two opposite mistakes: translating every invitation through formal เชิญ, and treating every vague positive reply as “yes.” Everyday Thai commonly uses a question with ไหม, while ขอเชิญ belongs to formal invitations. ขอดูก่อน and ยังไม่แน่ใจ postpone commitment; they are neither acceptance nor a grammatically fixed refusal.
Productive invitation frames
| Frame | Invitation design | Register |
|---|---|---|
| ไป + event + กันไหม | proposes joint action | informal to ordinary polite |
| ว่าง + time + ไหม | checks availability before proposing | ordinary polite |
| สนใจ + event + ไหม | checks interest and lowers presumption | ordinary polite |
| ถ้าว่าง มา...ด้วยกันนะ | warm invitation conditional on availability | informal/warm |
| เชิญ + event | invites or directs a guest in a host/service role | polite to formal |
| ขอเชิญ + person + event | ceremonial or institutional invitation | formal |
เย็นนี้ไปหาอะไรกินกันไหม
yen ni pai ha arai kin kan mai
Shall we go find something to eat this evening? (informal invitation among close people)
ถ้าวันศุกร์ว่าง ไปดูนิทรรศการด้วยกันไหมคะ
tha wan suk wang pai du nithatsakan duai kan mai kha
If you're free on Friday, would you like to see the exhibition together? (ordinary polite invitation, female speaker)
สนใจมาร่วมกิจกรรมปลูกต้นไม้ไหมครับ
sonchai ma ruam kitchakam pluk ton mai mai khrap
Would you be interested in joining the tree-planting activity? (ordinary polite invitation, male speaker)
กัน frames an activity as shared; ด้วยกัน makes togetherness more explicit. Neither is an English infinitive marker. The verb after ไป is often understood as a serial event—go and eat, go see—not as “to eat” with a special nonfinite form.
One invitation in three relationships
The proposition is the same: join the speaker for lunch at noon.
เที่ยงนี้ไปกินข้าวกันไหม
thiang ni pai kin khao kan mai
Want to go have lunch together at noon? (informal invitation to a close friend)
เที่ยงนี้ไปกินข้าวด้วยกันไหมคะ
thiang ni pai kin khao duai kan mai kha
Would you like to have lunch together at noon? (ordinary polite invitation to a colleague, female speaker)
ขอเชิญรับประทานอาหารกลางวันร่วมกับคณะผู้บริหารครับ
kho choen rapprathan ahan klang wan ruam kap khana phu borihan khrap
You are invited to have lunch with the executive team. (formal invitation, male host)
กินข้าว is ordinary; รับประทานอาหารกลางวัน is (formal/polite). คณะผู้บริหาร confirms an institutional setting. Using the third form with a close friend would sound ceremonious or playful, not neutral. Conversely, a bare ไปกินข้าวไหม may be too casual in an official written invitation.
Thai often omits both “I” and “you.” The shared proposal and the current addressee identify the participants. Repeating ฉันชวนคุณให้คุณไปกินข้าวกับฉัน imposes English-like participant packaging and sounds unnatural.
Replies: yes, no, and not yet
| Reply | Commitment | Register |
|---|---|---|
| ได้เลยครับ/ค่ะ | clear acceptance | ordinary polite |
| ไปครับ/ค่ะ | clear acceptance by repeating the predicate | ordinary polite |
| ดีเลย | enthusiastic acceptance in context | informal to ordinary |
| ขอดูตารางก่อนนะครับ/นะคะ | decision postponed | ordinary polite |
| ยังไม่แน่ใจครับ/ค่ะ | uncertain, no commitment | ordinary polite |
| ถ้าว่างจะไปครับ/ค่ะ | conditional possibility, not a promise | ordinary polite |
| คงไปไม่ได้ครับ/ค่ะ | clear but softened refusal | ordinary polite |
Thai polar answers often repeat the relevant predicate rather than use an invariant word corresponding to English yes. To ไปไหม, ไปครับ accepts and ไม่ไปครับ declines. To an availability check, ว่างค่ะ answers the state. See answering yes-no questions for this predicate-based system.
ได้เลยค่ะ ร้านไหนคะ
dai loei kha ran nai kha
Absolutely. Which restaurant? (enthusiastic polite acceptance, female speaker)
ยังไม่แน่ใจครับ ขอเช็กเวรแล้วจะบอกคืนนี้
yang mai nae chai khrap kho chek wen laeo cha bok khuen ni
I'm not sure yet. Let me check my shift, and I'll tell you tonight. (ordinary polite noncommittal reply with follow-up, male speaker)
ขอบคุณที่ชวนนะคะ แต่วันนั้นคงไปไม่ได้ค่ะ
khop khun thi chuan na kha tae wan nan khong pai mai dai kha
Thank you for inviting me, but I probably can't go that day. (warm polite refusal, female speaker)
The follow-up time คืนนี้ converts open uncertainty into a manageable arrangement. Without it, เดี๋ยวดูก่อน can leave the host unsure whether to reserve a seat.
Particle stacks and degree of pressure
Compare closely related endings:
| Form | Likely action | Stance |
|---|---|---|
| ไปด้วยกันไหมครับ | asks whether the listener accepts | ordinary polite, response space open |
| ไปด้วยกันนะครับ | proposes and seeks alignment | warm polite, somewhat more assumptive |
| ไปด้วยกันสิ | urges participation | informal/stance-marked |
| ไปด้วยกันเถอะ | makes a joint-action proposal | informal to neutral, context-sensitive |
ไหม formats a polar question. นะ seeks agreement or softens the proposal, but may presume more shared willingness. สิ urges and can sound encouraging among intimates or pressuring where distance is greater. These are not decorations appended to make an invitation “more Thai.” Compare the dedicated discussions of นะ and สิ.
ถ้าเลิกงานไม่ดึก แวะมากินเค้กด้วยกันนะคะ
tha loek ngan mai duek wae ma kin khek duai kan na kha
If you don't finish work too late, stop by and have cake with us, okay? (warm polite low-pressure invitation, female speaker)
Intonation reinforces the difference. A genuine ไหม question normally has questioning prosody and leaves a response slot. Warm falling นะ can present the invitation as hoped-for shared action. Sharp stress on สิ increases insistence. A playful contour may make urging affectionate among friends, but the same words from a senior to a junior can carry institutional pressure.
Formal เชิญ and host-role uses
เชิญ can invite attendance, but it also occurs in host or service directions such as เชิญนั่งครับ “Please sit.” ขอเชิญ makes the institutional speech act explicit and is common in announcements, ceremonies, and written notices (formal).
ขอเชิญผู้เข้าร่วมงานลงทะเบียนที่ชั้นหนึ่งค่ะ
kho choen phu khao ruam ngan long thabian thi chan nueng kha
Participants are invited to register on the first floor. (formal event announcement, female voice)
เชิญเข้ามารอข้างในได้เลยครับ ฝนกำลังตก
choen khao ma ro khang nai dai loei khrap fon kamlang tok
Please come wait inside; it's raining. (polite host invitation, male speaker)
In the second example, เชิญ is natural because the speaker controls the space as host. Between friends deciding where to eat, it would be unnecessarily formal unless used jokingly.
Silence and noncommittal inference
A pause, nervous laugh, or delayed message may suggest reluctance, especially after an invitation that is hard to decline. It remains defeasible evidence: the person may be checking transport or asking someone else. ขอดูก่อน, ขอคิดดูก่อน, and ถ้าว่างจะไป explicitly withhold commitment.
Hosts should not count those replies as acceptance. Guests should not rely on silence as an elegant refusal when bookings or food are involved. A polite clarification—ถ้าสะดวก รบกวนยืนยันภายในวันพฤหัสนะครับ—protects both face and planning. For time negotiation, see Making Plans and Arranging Time.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two colleagues discuss a weekend market.
เสาร์นี้มีตลาดงานฝีมือ สนใจไปด้วยกันไหมครับ
sao ni mi talat ngan fimue sonchai pai duai kan mai khrap
There's a craft market this Saturday. Would you like to go together? (ordinary polite invitation, male speaker)
น่าสนใจค่ะ แต่ขอเช็กตารางงานก่อนนะคะ
na sonchai kha tae kho chek tarang ngan kon na kha
That sounds interesting, but let me check my work schedule first. (warm polite noncommittal reply, female speaker)
ได้ครับ ถ้าสะดวกช่วยบอกพรุ่งนี้ก็ได้
dai khrap tha saduak chuai bok phrung ni ko dai
Sure. If it's convenient, you can let me know tomorrow. (ordinary polite response, male speaker)
ตกลงค่ะ พรุ่งนี้ช่วงเช้าจะส่งข้อความไปยืนยัน
toklong kha phrung ni chuang chao cha song khokhwam pai yuenyan
All right. I'll send a message tomorrow morning to confirm. (ordinary polite follow-up, female speaker)
Her first turn values the idea but does not accept. The final turn agrees only to confirm later, not necessarily to attend. This distinction matters whenever money or a head count is involved.
Common Mistakes
1. Using formal เชิญ for every casual invitation
❌ ขอเรียนเชิญเธอไปกินก๋วยเตี๋ยวหน้าปากซอยกับเรา
Comically formal for inviting a close friend to the neighborhood noodle shop.
✅ ไปกินก๋วยเตี๋ยวหน้าปากซอยกันไหม
pai kin kuaitiao na pak soi kan mai
Want to go eat noodles at the entrance to the lane? (informal invitation to a close friend)
2. Treating a noncommittal reply as acceptance
❌ เขาบอกว่าขอดูก่อน งั้นจองที่ให้เขาเลยค่ะ
Incorrect inference—ขอดูก่อน postpones the decision, so booking immediately treats a noncommittal reply as acceptance.
✅ เขาขอดูตารางก่อน ยังไม่ต้องจองที่ให้เขาค่ะ
khao kho du tarang kon yang mai tong chong thi hai khao kha
He wants to check his schedule first; we don't need to reserve him a place yet. (ordinary polite clarification, female speaker)
3. Using female statement ค่ะ on a direct invitation question
❌ พรุ่งนี้ไปด้วยกันไหมค่ะ
Incorrect standard particle in a direct question; a female speaker uses คะ after ไหม.
✅ พรุ่งนี้ไปดูหนังด้วยกันไหมคะ
phrung ni pai du nang duai kan mai kha
Would you like to go see a film together tomorrow? (ordinary polite invitation, female speaker)
4. Repeating English pronouns and complement structure
❌ ฉันเชิญคุณให้คุณไปกินข้าวกับฉันค่ะ
Unnatural packaging for an everyday invitation; it repeats participants and treats the following event like an English infinitive complement.
✅ หลังเลิกงานไปกินข้าวด้วยกันไหมคะ
lang loek ngan pai kin khao duai kan mai kha
Would you like to have dinner together after work? (ordinary polite invitation, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Use everyday question frames for ordinary invitations and reserve ขอเชิญ for formal or institutional settings.
- Distinguish clear acceptance from postponed commitment. ขอดูก่อน and ยังไม่แน่ใจ require later confirmation.
- ไหม, นะ, and สิ create different response spaces and pressures; status and intonation affect how each is heard.
- Omit obvious participants naturally, but state deadlines or confirmation points when practical planning depends on the answer.
