Negative Answers and Socially Calibrated Refusals

A Thai “no” is shaped by what it responds to. A factual question often takes the relevant negative predicate—ไม่ไป, ไม่มี, ไม่ใช่, ยังไม่เสร็จ—rather than one universal word. Refusing an invitation, request, offer, or suggestion is a social action, so speakers commonly combine the negative with appreciation, an apology, a reason, a limit, or an alternative.

Bare ไม่ครับ/ไม่ค่ะ is possible when the choice is obvious, but it can sound abrupt and may leave scope unclear. Politeness particles do not by themselves repair a poorly matched answer: ไม่ต้องครับ means “there is no need,” ไม่ได้ครับ presents something as unavailable or impossible, and ไม่ใช่ครับ rejects identity or a proposition. The predicate must fit the conversational move.

Answer the predicate that was asked

For a factual polar question, repeating the predicate gives a precise answer. Thai can omit a subject or object that remains recoverable from the preceding question; this is discourse continuity, not random pronoun deletion.

ผู้จัดการอยู่ที่สำนักงานไหมคะ

phu chatkan yu thi samnakngan mai kha

Is the manager at the office? (polite information question, female speaker)

ไม่อยู่ครับ วันนี้ไปพบลูกค้า

mai yu khrap wan ni pai phop luk kha

No, the manager isn't here; today they have gone to meet a client. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker; subject omitted as recoverable)

สรุปยอดประจำเดือนเสร็จหรือยังคะ

sarup yot pracham duean set rue yang kha

Is the monthly summary finished yet? (polite status question, female speaker)

ยังไม่เสร็จครับ ขอเวลาอีกครึ่งชั่วโมง

yang mai set khrap kho wela ik khrueng chua mong

Not yet; please give me another half hour. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker)

The first reply uses ไม่อยู่, not ไม่ใช่, because the question concerns presence. The second repeats the result predicate เสร็จ under ยังไม่. English answers both with no, but Thai selects a negative whose predicate type and temporal viewpoint match the question. See recoverable argument omission for why omitted material remains understandable.

💡
Before answering, silently repeat the Thai predicate from the question. Negate that predicate unless the interaction calls for a refusal formula rather than a factual answer.

A refusal is usually a sequence of moves

Research on Thai refusals describes combinations rather than one fixed formula. A speaker may acknowledge the offer or invitation, state inability or inconvenience, give a proportionate reason, and offer another time. Which moves are appropriate depends on distance, status, imposition, and whether the relationship will continue.

InteractionProductive responseSocial work
decline an offerไม่เป็นไร + ขอบคุณreleases the offerer from acting and shows appreciation
decline more food/serviceพอแล้ว / ไม่รับเพิ่ม + ขอบคุณstates the relevant limit
decline an invitationขอบคุณ + แต่ไม่สะดวก + reason/alternativevalues the invitation while declining
refuse a requestขอโทษ + คง V ไม่ได้ + reasonmarks regret and practical unavailability
formal inabilityเกรงว่า + ไม่สามารถ + event + ได้careful institutional refusal

ไม่เป็นไรค่ะ ขอบคุณนะคะ ฉันมีน้ำแล้ว

mai pen rai kha khop khun na kha chan mi nam laeo

No, thank you; I already have water. (polite refusal of an offer, female speaker)

พอแล้วค่ะ อาหารอร่อยมาก ขอบคุณนะคะ

pho laeo kha ahan aroi mak khop khun na kha

I've had enough; the food was delicious. Thank you. (warm polite refusal of more food, female speaker)

ไม่เป็นไร has several pragmatic uses: it can accept an apology, reassure someone, or decline an offer by saying that the offered action is unnecessary. It is not a universal translation of no. พอแล้ว is more informative when the relevant issue is quantity.

ขอบคุณมากนะคะ แต่เย็นนี้ติดธุระค่ะ ไว้คราวหน้านะคะ

khop khun mak na kha tae yen ni tit thura kha wai khrao na na kha

Thank you very much, but I have another commitment this evening. Maybe next time. (warm polite refusal of an invitation, female speaker)

ขอโทษครับ วันนี้คงส่งเอกสารให้ไม่ได้ ถ้าเป็นพรุ่งนี้เช้าได้ครับ

kho thot khrap wan ni khong song ekkasan hai mai dai tha pen phrung ni chao dai khrap

I'm sorry, I probably can't send the documents today. Tomorrow morning would work. (ordinary polite refusal with an alternative, male speaker)

The modal คง…ไม่ได้ presents the requested event as unavailable under the circumstances. It generally sounds less blunt than a bare ไม่, but it should not be used to conceal a negotiable preference as an absolute fact in high-stakes communication. Giving a concrete alternative is often more useful than adding several softeners.

Register, power, and proportion

With a colleague or acquaintance, a short apology plus reason is normally enough. To refuse a superior, customer, or formal request, speakers may use more explicit deference and institutional language. เกรงว่า “I am concerned that…” and ไม่สามารถ…ได้ “cannot…” are (formal); stacking them in casual talk with a close friend can sound distant.

เกรงว่าทางบริษัทจะไม่สามารถอนุมัติคำขอนี้ได้ค่ะ เนื่องจากเอกสารไม่ครบ

kreng wa thang borisat cha mai samat anumat kham kho ni dai kha nueang chak ekkasan mai khrop

We regret that the company cannot approve this request because the documentation is incomplete. (formal institutional refusal, female voice)

วันนี้ผมคงไปด้วยไม่ได้ครับ ต้องดูแลลูก

wan ni phom khong pai duai mai dai khrap tong dulae luk

I probably won't be able to join you today; I have to look after my child. (ordinary polite refusal, male speaker)

The second is not grammatically past or future: วันนี้ and the invitation context locate the prospective nonattendance. คง lowers categorical commitment by presenting an assessed likelihood, while postverbal ไม่ได้ marks inability or situational unavailability.

💡
Match the amount of explanation to the relationship and imposition. One sincere reason plus a feasible alternative is often more natural than a long chain of formal apologies.

Short negatives, focus, and correction

A short ไม่ครับ/ไม่ค่ะ can be entirely appropriate when answering a simple choice—especially in service encounters where the object is visible. It becomes risky when several propositions are active or when the response could threaten the other person's social face.

รับถุงเพิ่มไหมคะ

rap thung phoem mai kha

Would you like an extra bag? (polite service question, female speaker)

ไม่รับครับ ขอบคุณครับ

mai rap khrap khop khun khrap

No extra bag, thank you. (ordinary polite refusal, male speaker; the relevant predicate is repeated)

If a request contains a modal, the negative position matters. ไม่ต้องส่งวันนี้ means “there is no need to send it today,” whereas ส่งวันนี้ไม่ได้ means “it cannot be sent today.” A client declining expedited service might use the first; a supplier refusing an impossible deadline needs the second. The request patterns with ขอ provide the corresponding initiating moves.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

A colleague invites another colleague to an evening event.

เย็นวันศุกร์ไปงานเปิดร้านกับทีมไหมคะ

yen wan suk pai ngan poet ran kap thim mai kha

Would you like to go to the shop-opening event with the team on Friday evening? (polite invitation, female speaker)

ขอบคุณครับ แต่เย็นวันศุกร์ผมไม่สะดวก ต้องไปรับลูก

khop khun khrap tae yen wan suk phom mai saduak tong pai rap luk

Thank you, but Friday evening isn't convenient for me; I have to pick up my child. (ordinary polite refusal, male speaker)

ถ้าอย่างนั้น ไปกินข้าวกับทีมวันจันทร์แทนไหมคะ

tha yang nan pai kin khao kap thim wan chan thaen mai kha

In that case, would you like to have dinner with the team on Monday instead? (polite alternative, female speaker)

วันจันทร์ได้ครับ ขอบคุณที่ชวนนะครับ

wan chan dai khrap khop khun thi chuan na khrap

Monday works. Thank you for inviting me. (warm polite acceptance, male speaker)

The refusal states inconvenience, gives a compact reason, and leaves the relationship open. The reply to the alternative uses ได้, repeating the relevant modal value rather than a universal “yes.”

Common Mistakes

1. Using ไม่ต้อง to mean “I cannot”

❌ ช่วยเลื่อนนัดเป็นบ่ายสามได้ไหมคะ — ไม่ต้องครับ

Incorrect response meaning—ไม่ต้อง says ‘there is no need,’ not ‘I cannot reschedule it.’

✅ ช่วยเลื่อนนัดเป็นบ่ายสามได้ไหมคะ — ขอโทษครับ คงเลื่อนไม่ได้

chuai luean nat pen bai sam dai mai kha kho thot khrap khong luean mai dai

Could you move the appointment to three? — I'm sorry, I probably can't reschedule it. (ordinary polite exchange)

2. Using ไม่ได้ as a simple refusal of an offer

❌ รับชาเพิ่มไหมคะ — ไม่ได้ครับ

Wrong for a simple preference; ไม่ได้ presents inability or unavailability, not merely declining more tea.

✅ รับชาเพิ่มไหมคะ — พอแล้วครับ ขอบคุณครับ

rap cha phoem mai kha pho laeo khrap khop khun khrap

Would you like more tea? — I've had enough, thank you. (ordinary polite exchange)

3. Using female question คะ on a statement

❌ วันนี้ฉันไม่สะดวกคะ

Incorrect polite particle for a statement; female statement form is ค่ะ.

✅ วันนี้ฉันไม่สะดวกค่ะ ขอเป็นวันอังคารได้ไหมคะ

wan ni chan mai saduak kha kho pen wan angkhan dai mai kha

Today isn't convenient for me. Could we make it Tuesday? (polite refusal and alternative, female speaker)

4. Answering an action request with identity negation

❌ พรุ่งนี้มาช่วยจัดห้องได้ไหมคะ — ไม่ใช่ครับ

Incorrect answer predicate; ไม่ใช่ rejects identity or a proposed equation, not availability to help.

✅ พรุ่งนี้มาช่วยจัดห้องได้ไหมคะ — ขอโทษครับ พรุ่งนี้มาไม่ได้

phrung ni ma chuai chat hong dai mai kha kho thot khrap phrung ni ma mai dai

Can you come help arrange the room tomorrow? — I'm sorry, I can't come tomorrow. (ordinary polite exchange)

5. Translating English word order

❌ ฉันขอบคุณไม่ค่ะ มีเครื่องดื่มแล้ว

Incorrect Thai order; gratitude is not split by a translated English ‘no.’

✅ ไม่เป็นไรค่ะ ขอบคุณค่ะ ฉันมีเครื่องดื่มแล้ว

mai pen rai kha khop khun kha chan mi khrueang duem laeo

No, thank you; I already have a drink. (polite refusal of an offer, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Factual negative answers normally repeat the relevant predicate: ไม่อยู่, ไม่มี, ไม่ไป, ยังไม่เสร็จ.
  • A refusal often combines acknowledgment, a matched negative, a proportionate reason, and sometimes an alternative.
  • ไม่เป็นไร, ไม่ต้อง, ไม่ได้, and ไม่ใช่ are not interchangeable words for English no.
  • Formal เกรงว่า…ไม่สามารถ…ได้ suits institutional refusals; ordinary conversation usually uses lighter wording.
  • A short negative is clearest when the prior predicate and its scope are unmistakably recoverable.
