Thai does not need separate roots corresponding to English who / anyone / no one and what / anything / nothing. The indeterminates ใคร and อะไร receive negative readings when the surrounding construction licenses them. ไม่มีใครมา means “no one came,” while ฉันไม่ได้ซื้ออะไร means “I didn't buy anything.”
The position of the unknown participant matters. An absent subject is usually built with ไม่มีใคร + predicate; an object often stays in its ordinary postverbal position under ไม่ or ไม่ได้. The negative meaning belongs to the whole frame, not to ใคร or อะไร in isolation.
The same roots have interrogative and free-choice uses, introduced on ใคร, อะไร, and indefinite readings.
Negative subjects with ไม่มี
For “no one” as subject, use ไม่มีใคร + predicate. The existential negative ไม่มี says that no person exists in the relevant set who performs the event.
ไม่มีใครอยู่หน้าห้องประชุมครับ
mai mi khrai yu na hong prachum khrap
There is no one outside the meeting room. (polite statement, male speaker)
เมื่อคืนไม่มีใครรับโทรศัพท์ค่ะ
muea khuen mai mi khrai rap thorasap kha
No one answered the phone last night. (polite report, female speaker)
Time comes from เมื่อคืน, not from a past form of รับ. ใคร remains the human indeterminate root, and ไม่มี licenses the negative subject reading.
The minimal contrast with a content question is important:
ใครไม่มาประชุมวันนี้คะ
khrai mai ma prachum wan ni kha
Who did not come to the meeting today? (polite content question, female speaker)
วันนี้ไม่มีใครมาประชุมค่ะ
wan ni mai mi khrai ma prachum kha
No one came to the meeting today. (polite statement, female speaker)
In the question, ใคร asks which person falls under ไม่มา. In the statement, ไม่มีใคร forms an unambiguous negative subject. English fronting does not explain the contrast; the licensing frame does.
| Productive frame | Substitution | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| ไม่มีใคร + V | ไม่มีใครโทรมา | no person performs the event |
| ไม่มีอะไร + predicate | ไม่มีอะไรเสียหาย | no thing has the property/result |
| subject + ไม่ V ใคร | ผมไม่เจอใคร | not meet anyone |
| subject + ไม่ได้ V อะไร | ฉันไม่ได้ซื้ออะไร | did not buy anything |
| subject + ไม่ V ที่ไหน | เราไม่ไปไหน | not go anywhere |
| ไม่มีที่ไหน + predicate | ไม่มีที่ไหนเปิด | no place has the stated property |
ไม่มีอะไร as subject or existential absence
ไม่มีอะไร + predicate says that no relevant thing satisfies the predicate. ไม่มีอะไรเสียหาย can reassure someone that nothing was damaged.
ตรวจแล้วไม่มีอะไรเสียหายค่ะ ใช้งานได้ตามปกติ
truat laeo mai mi arai sia hai kha chai ngan dai tam pokkati
I've checked, and nothing is damaged; it works normally. (polite reassuring report, female speaker)
อะไร is not asking “what?” here. The preceding ไม่มี makes the negative-indefinite reading clear. In มีอะไรเสียหายไหม, by contrast, the clause asks whether anything is damaged.
The same frame can remove a need or concern:
ไม่มีอะไรต้องกังวลครับ ผลตรวจทุกอย่างปกติ
mai mi arai tong kangwon khrap phon truat thuk yang pokkati
There is nothing to worry about; all the test results are normal. (polite reassuring statement, male speaker)
ต้อง belongs inside the property attributed to a possible thing: there is no thing that one needs to worry about. This is different from ไม่ต้องกังวล, which directly removes the listener's need to worry.
Negative objects stay after the verb
When the unknown person or thing is the object, it normally remains where an ordinary object would occur. The negator precedes the predicate.
ผมไม่เห็นใครที่ป้ายรถเมล์เลยครับ
phom mai hen khrai thi pai rot me loei khrap
I did not see anyone at the bus stop at all. (polite report, male speaker)
ฉันไม่ได้ซื้ออะไรจากร้านนั้นค่ะ แค่เข้าไปดู
chan mai dai sue arai chak ran nan kha khae khao pai du
I didn't buy anything from that shop; I only went in to look. (polite report, female speaker)
In the first, ไม่ negates seeing and เลย strengthens the “not anyone” reading. In the second, ไม่ได้ broadly denies a buying event in a past context. อะไร stays after ซื้อ; Thai does not replace it with a dedicated word nothing or move it before the verb.
Places and the scope of “nowhere”
For motion, ไม่ไปไหน means “not go anywhere,” often pragmatically “stay where one is.” ไม่ได้ไปไหน denies going anywhere in a relevant past period.
สุดสัปดาห์นี้เราไม่ไปไหนค่ะ จะพักอยู่บ้าน
sut sapda ni rao mai pai nai kha cha phak yu ban
We aren't going anywhere this weekend; we're going to rest at home. (polite, female spokesperson)
เมื่อวานผมไม่ได้ไปไหนเลยครับ ฝนตกทั้งวัน
muea wan phom mai dai pai nai loei khrap fon tok thang wan
I didn't go anywhere at all yesterday; it rained all day. (polite report, male speaker)
The first is a current plan; the second denies realized travel in a past frame. ไป does not conjugate. With a place as negative subject, use ไม่มีที่ไหน + predicate:
ตอนนี้ไม่มีที่ไหนเปิดแล้วค่ะ แถวนี้เงียบมาก
ton ni mai mi thi nai poet laeo kha thaeo ni ngiap mak
Nowhere is open now; this area is very quiet. (polite statement, female speaker)
Aspect, modality, and focus
Aspect can preserve the negative situation. ยังไม่มีใครมา means that no one has arrived up to the current reference point and often implies that arrivals are expected. ไม่เคยเจอใคร excludes every relevant past experience.
ยังไม่มีใครส่งคำตอบมาครับ
yang mai mi khrai song kham top ma khrap
No one has sent an answer yet. (polite report, male speaker; an answer is expected)
A modal can take scope inside the negative set:
ไม่มีใครเปิดตู้ใบนี้ได้ค่ะ กุญแจหาย
mai mi khrai poet tu bai ni dai kha kunchae hai
No one can open this cabinet; the key is missing. (polite statement, female speaker)
The sentence denies that any person has the relevant ability. It does not say that opening is institutionally forbidden. A rule would use ห้าม, while ตู้ใบนี้เปิดไม่ได้ would foreground the cabinet's unavailable opening rather than quantify over people.
Focus expressions such as เลย can make the negative-indefinite interpretation unambiguous and emphatic: ไม่เห็นใครเลย, ไม่ได้ซื้ออะไรเลย. The focused material follows its verb; English nobody and nothing do not determine Thai word order.
Embedded questions are not negative indefinites
Negation on a cognition predicate may contain an embedded question. ไม่รู้ว่าใคร... means “not know who...,” not “know that no one...”
ฉันไม่รู้ว่าใครเอากุญแจห้องเก็บของไปค่ะ
chan mai ru wa khrai ao kunchae hong kep khong pai kha
I don't know who took the storeroom key. (polite statement, female speaker; embedded question)
ไม่ negates รู้. The clause after ว่า preserves the question “who took the key?” To say that nobody took it, use ไม่มีใครเอากุญแจไป. This scope difference is one of the hardest parts of Thai indeterminates and cannot be solved by translating ใคร in isolation.
Double negation is logical, not automatic agreement
Standard Thai does not require English-style negative concord around these forms. ไม่มีใครรู้ means “no one knows.” Adding another ไม่ produces a different logical structure:
ไม่มีใครไม่รู้ข่าวนี้
mai mi khrai mai ru khao ni
There is no one who does not know this news; everyone knows it. (neutral emphatic generalization)
The two negatives cancel at the level of the participant set. This is not the ordinary way to say “nobody knows.” Real discourse may add irony or emphasis, but learners should not treat the second ไม่ as meaningless agreement.
Register
ไม่มีใคร, ไม่มีอะไร, and ไม่...ใคร/อะไร are neutral across conversation and general prose. ไม่มีผู้ใด and ไม่มีสิ่งใด are formal/written alternatives found in rules, reports, and elevated prose. They are not more polite versions for everyday conversation.
ไม่มีผู้ใดได้รับอนุญาตให้เข้าถึงข้อมูลส่วนนี้
mai mi phu dai dai rap anuyat hai khao thueng khomun suan ni
No person is authorized to access this section of the data. (formal written rule)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
มีใครเห็นบัตรผ่านของฉันไหมคะ
mi khrai hen bat phan khong chan mai kha
Has anyone seen my access card? (polite question, female speaker)
ยังไม่มีใครเห็นเลยครับ ลองดูในลิ้นชักหรือยังครับ
yang mai mi khrai hen loei khrap long du nai linchak rue yang khrap
No one has seen it yet. Have you tried looking in the drawer? (polite reply, male speaker)
The question uses มีใคร...ไหม to open an existential possibility. The reply places that same person set under ยังไม่มี and strengthens it with เลย. The card is omitted after เห็น because the previous turn keeps it active.
When the whole proposition and participant type are already active, ไม่มีครับ/ค่ะ can serve as a short reply: after มีใครอยู่ไหม, it means “no one is there.” Outside that context, ไม่มี only says that the relevant thing or person is absent, so retaining ใคร or อะไร prevents ambiguity.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting ไม่ directly before an indefinite subject
❌ ไม่ใครอยู่ที่เคาน์เตอร์ค่ะ
Incorrect — a negative human subject normally uses ไม่มีใคร.
✅ ไม่มีใครอยู่ที่เคาน์เตอร์ค่ะ
mai mi khrai yu thi khaotoe kha
There is no one at the counter. (polite statement, female speaker)
2. Stacking an English-style negative object
❌ ผมไม่เห็นไม่มีใครในห้องครับ
Incorrect double negative for ‘I didn't see anyone’ — keep ใคร as the object under ไม่.
✅ ผมไม่เห็นใครในห้องเลยครับ
phom mai hen khrai nai hong loei khrap
I did not see anyone in the room at all. (polite report, male speaker)
3. Putting ไม่มีอะไร after a transitive verb
❌ ฉันซื้อไม่มีอะไรจากตลาดค่ะ
Incorrect for ‘I bought nothing’ — the object อะไร follows ซื้อ under event negation.
✅ ฉันไม่ได้ซื้ออะไรจากตลาดค่ะ
chan mai dai sue arai chak talat kha
I did not buy anything at the market. (polite report, female speaker)
4. Using double negation for “nobody came”
❌ ไม่มีใครไม่มางานเลี้ยงค่ะ
Wrong for the intended ‘nobody came’ — this means there was no one who failed to come, so everyone came.
✅ ไม่มีใครมางานเลี้ยงค่ะ
mai mi khrai ma ngan liang kha
No one came to the party. (polite statement, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Thai negative indefinites are constructions, not permanently negative words. ไม่มีใคร/ไม่มีอะไร build negative subjects or existential absence; objects remain after their verb under ไม่ or ไม่ได้; and ไปไหน/ที่ไหน form different motion and place frames. Aspect and modality scope over the same structures, while ไม่รู้ว่าใคร preserves an embedded question. A second ไม่ creates genuine double negation rather than automatic negative agreement.
