Thai จะ places a situation after a relevant reference point or presents it as not yet established fact. This produces familiar translations such as “will,” “would,” “be going to,” and “intend to,” but จะ is not an English-style future-tense ending. It can refer to a future plan, a prediction, a later event viewed from the past, a hypothetical consequence, or a proposition whose acceptance is being challenged.
Thai linguistics has therefore analyzed จะ as both a prospective marker and a challengeability marker. “Challengeable” does not mean that every จะ clause starts an argument. It means the proposition is presented as something the hearer cannot simply verify as settled fact at the reference point: a plan may change, a prediction may fail, and a hypothetical consequence depends on a condition.
The central prospective frame
| Frame | Viewpoint | Productive substitution |
|---|---|---|
| subject + จะ + event | plan, intention, prediction, or later event | เราจะเริ่มประชุม |
| past reference + จะ + event | event was still prospective then | เมื่อวานผมจะโทรกลับ |
| ถ้า + condition, จะ + result | result follows if condition holds | ถ้าฝนตก เราจะเลื่อนงาน |
| modal + จะ + event | calibrated likelihood or advice | คงจะมา / น่าจะพอ / ควรจะพัก |
| จะ + ไม่ + event | projected nonoccurrence or refusal | จะไม่เปิดเผยข้อมูล |
| ไม่ได้ + จะ + event | denies an alleged intention | ไม่ได้จะตำหนิ |
พรุ่งนี้เราจะเริ่มประชุมตอนเก้าโมงค่ะ
phrung ni rao cha roem prachum ton kao mong kha
Tomorrow we will start the meeting at nine. (ordinary polite plan, female speaker)
ผมจะจัดการเรื่องนี้เองครับ
phom cha chatkan rueang ni eng khrap
I'll handle this myself. (ordinary polite commitment, male speaker)
เย็นนี้ฝนน่าจะตกหนักค่ะ
yen ni fon na cha tok nak kha
It will probably rain heavily this evening. (ordinary polite prediction, female speaker)
In the first two examples, จะ supports planning or commitment; in the third it combines with น่า to calibrate a prediction. The predicates เริ่ม, จัดการ, and ตก do not change form.
Future time does not require จะ
A future time phrase can locate an event without จะ when the schedule or discourse already establishes it. Adding จะ often makes the prospective stance, prediction, or commitment more salient.
พรุ่งนี้รถออกเจ็ดโมงตรงครับ
phrung ni rot ok chet mong trong khrap
Tomorrow the vehicle leaves at exactly seven. (ordinary polite schedule statement, male speaker)
พรุ่งนี้รถจะออกเจ็ดโมงตรงครับ
phrung ni rot cha ok chet mong trong khrap
Tomorrow the vehicle will leave at exactly seven. (ordinary polite prospective statement, male speaker)
Both are grammatical. The first can present a settled timetable as a fact. The second explicitly views departure as prospective. This is why a learner should not mechanically insert จะ into every sentence translated with English will, or remove it whenever a future adverb appears.
This use of จะ is neutral in ordinary speech and writing. Formal prose may state schedules without it or use it for an explicit projection; casual speakers likewise alternate according to viewpoint. The difference is not a formal-versus-colloquial conjugation.
The broader time-without-tense page explains how adverbs and discourse locate unmarked predicates.
A later event viewed from the past
Because จะ is relative to a reference point, it can appear in past narratives. It marks what was intended, expected, or still ahead at that earlier moment.
เมื่อวานผมจะโทรกลับ แต่โทรศัพท์แบตหมดครับ
muea wan phom cha tho klap tae thorasap baet mot khrap
Yesterday I was going to call back, but my phone battery died. (ordinary polite recollection, male speaker)
ตอนพบกันครั้งแรก เธอไม่รู้ว่าอีกไม่นานจะย้ายไปเชียงใหม่ค่ะ
ton phop kan khrang raek thoe mai ru wa ik mai nan cha yai pai chiang mai kha
When we first met, she did not know that she would soon move to Chiang Mai. (careful polite narrative, female speaker)
เมื่อเช้าหัวหน้าบอกว่าจะส่งกำหนดการใหม่ครับ
muea chao hua na bok wa cha song kamnotkan mai khrap
This morning the supervisor said they would send a revised schedule. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)
English changes will to would in many past reports. Thai does not backshift a conjugated verb; จะ continues to mark a situation prospective relative to the earlier report or awareness.
Conditions, habitual consequences, and ถ้าจะ
In a real open condition, Thai commonly leaves จะ out of the ถ้า clause and uses it in the consequence. The condition establishes a possible reference situation; the result is prospective from there.
ถ้าฝนตก เราจะย้ายงานเข้าไปในอาคารค่ะ
tha fon tok rao cha yai ngan khao pai nai akhan kha
If it rains, we'll move the event indoors. (ordinary polite contingency plan, female speaker)
ถ้าลูกค้าชำระช้า ระบบจะส่งข้อความเตือนครับ
tha luk kha chamra cha rabop cha song khokhwam tuean khrap
If a customer pays late, the system sends a reminder. (formal-polite explanation, male voice; regular consequence)
ถ้าจะ + event is not simply “future tense inside if.” It commonly means “if [someone] intends/is going to...” and therefore makes the prospective stance itself part of the condition.
ถ้าจะเปลี่ยนวันนัด กรุณาแจ้งก่อนเที่ยงค่ะ
tha cha plian wan nat karuna chaeng kon thiang kha
If you intend to change the appointment date, please notify us before noon. (formal-polite instruction, female voice)
This contrast is constructional. English speakers often insert will into Thai conditions based on English translation, but Thai จะ inside the condition changes what is being tested.
Challengeability in questions and rhetorical replies
Questions naturally concern information not established between speakers. จะ + event + ไหม commonly asks about intention, expectation, or a projected choice.
สุดสัปดาห์นี้คุณจะไปเยี่ยมพ่อแม่ไหมคะ
sut sapda ni khun cha pai yiam pho mae mai kha
Will you visit your parents this weekend? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; asks intention or plan)
In rhetorical questions, จะ can foreground that the proposition is difficult to accept or answer. These are (informal or emotionally engaged) unless a polite particle and context soften them.
ใครจะไปรู้ว่าเขาเปลี่ยนแผนกะทันหันครับ
khrai cha pai ru wa khao plian phaen kathanhan khrap
Who could have known that he would change the plan suddenly? (conversational but polite response, male speaker)
ผมจะรู้ได้ยังไงครับ ในเมื่อไม่มีใครบอก
phom cha ru dai yang ngai khrap nai muea mai mi khrai bok
How would I know, when nobody told me? (conversational polite challenge, male speaker)
Here จะ does not locate a literal future act of knowing. It presents the proposed knowledge as challengeable under the circumstances. This is the clearest reason that “future marker” is too narrow.
Negation and scope
จะไม่ V projects nonoccurrence or expresses refusal/commitment not to act. ไม่ได้จะ V denies that an intention or prospective stance was present.
บริษัทจะไม่เปิดเผยข้อมูลส่วนตัวค่ะ
borisat cha mai poetphoei khomun suan tua kha
The company will not disclose personal information. (formal commitment, female voice)
ผมไม่ได้จะปฏิเสธครับ แค่อยากขอเวลาเพิ่ม
phom mai dai cha patiset khrap khae yak kho wela phoem
I'm not intending to refuse; I only want to ask for more time. (ordinary polite clarification, male speaker)
The first commits to a negative future event. The second rejects the hearer's possible interpretation of the speaker's intention. ไม่จะ V is not the neutral order for either meaning. The contrast depends on scope, not English auxiliary placement.
Ordering with aspect and other modals
จะ combines productively, but each order contributes meaning:
| Order | Meaning | Contrast |
|---|---|---|
| กำลังจะ + V | imminent event | กำลังจะออก “is about to leave” |
| จะ + V + แล้ว | event is on the point of happening | จะออกแล้ว “will leave now / is about to leave” |
| จะได้ + V | expected opportunity or resulting benefit | จะได้พัก “will get to rest” |
| จะ + V + ได้ | projected ability or permission | จะเข้าพักได้ “will be able/allowed to stay” |
| คง/น่า/อาจ + จะ + V | calibrated conjecture | คงจะถึง “will probably arrive” |
อีกห้านาทีรถไฟกำลังจะออกแล้วค่ะ
ik ha nathi rotfai kamlang cha ok laeo kha
The train is about to leave in five minutes. (ordinary polite warning, female speaker)
ถ้าส่งงานเสร็จวันนี้ พรุ่งนี้เราจะได้พักครับ
tha song ngan set wan ni phrung ni rao cha dai phak khrap
If we finish the work today, tomorrow we'll get to rest. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
หลังจากระบบยืนยันแล้ว คุณจะดาวน์โหลดใบรับรองได้ค่ะ
lang chak rabop yuenyan laeo khun cha dao lot bai raprong dai kha
After the system confirms it, you will be able to download the certificate. (ordinary polite service explanation, female voice)
The dedicated pages compare กำลังจะ and ordinary จะ and จะ...แล้ว imminence. No single rigid template covers every modal and aspect marker; semantic compatibility and scope constrain the order.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
พรุ่งนี้คุณจะเข้ามาที่สำนักงานไหมคะ
phrung ni khun cha khao ma thi samnakngan mai kha
Will you be coming into the office tomorrow? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
เข้าครับ แต่ผมจะมาหลังสิบโมง
khao khrap tae phom cha ma lang sip mong
Yes, but I'll come after ten. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้าอย่างนั้นฉันจะเลื่อนประชุมไปช่วงบ่ายค่ะ
tha yang nan chan cha luean prachum pai chuang bai kha
In that case, I'll move the meeting to the afternoon. (ordinary polite decision, female speaker)
ได้ครับ ผมจะส่งข้อความยืนยันอีกที
dai khrap phom cha song khokhwam yuenyan ik thi
All right. I'll send another confirmation message. (ordinary polite commitment, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Using จะ as a simple past marker
❌ เมื่อวานผมจะไปธนาคารแล้วครับ
Wrong for the intended simple report ‘I went to the bank yesterday’; จะ presents going as prospective from that past point.
✅ เมื่อวานผมไปธนาคารมาแล้วครับ
muea wan phom pai thanakhan ma laeo khrap
I went to the bank yesterday. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
2. Putting ไม่ before จะ by English auxiliary order
❌ บริษัทไม่จะเก็บข้อมูลนี้ค่ะ
Incorrect neutral order—projected negation is จะไม่ + event.
✅ บริษัทจะไม่เก็บข้อมูลนี้หลังปิดบัญชีค่ะ
borisat cha mai kep khomun ni lang pit banchi kha
The company will not retain this information after the account is closed. (formal commitment, female voice)
3. Inserting จะ into a condition without preserving its meaning
❌ ถ้าฝนจะตก เราจะย้ายโต๊ะเข้าไปค่ะ
Wrong for the intended neutral ‘if it rains’; ถ้าจะตก asks whether rain is prospective or imminent.
✅ ถ้าฝนตก เราจะย้ายโต๊ะเข้าไปข้างในค่ะ
tha fon tok rao cha yai to khao pai khang nai kha
If it rains, we'll move the tables inside. (ordinary polite plan, female speaker)
4. Confusing a promise not to act with denial of an intention
❌ ผมจะไม่เถียงครับ แค่อยากถามให้ชัดเจน
Wrong for ‘I'm not trying to argue’; this sounds like a promise that the speaker will not argue.
✅ ผมไม่ได้จะเถียงครับ แค่อยากถามให้ชัดเจน
phom mai dai cha thiang khrap khae yak tham hai chatchen
I'm not trying to argue; I just want to ask for clarification. (ordinary polite clarification, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- จะ presents a situation as prospective or otherwise not established at a reference point; it is not a conjugated future tense.
- Future time can be clear without จะ, and past contexts can contain จะ when an event was still prospective then.
- Plans, predictions, conditional consequences, reported intentions, and rhetorical challenges explain the marker's wider distribution.
- Order distinguishes จะไม่ V, ไม่ได้จะ V, จะได้ V, and จะ V ได้; adjacent predicates are not English infinitives.
