Scope with Post-Focus เท่านั้น | Thai Grammar

เท่านั้น means “only” when a speaker closes off every relevant alternative except one. It follows the complete phrase it restricts: สองฉบับเท่านั้น “only two copies,” สมาชิกเท่านั้น “members only,” and วันนี้เท่านั้น “today only.” What counts as an alternative comes from the question, contrast, or practical choice already active in the conversation.

That discourse dependence matters. รับเงินสดเท่านั้น does not merely mention cash; it excludes cards and transfers in the current payment set. Thai can omit a recoverable subject or object around the restriction, but the focused value itself normally stays overt. The omission is licensed by topic continuity, not by a supposed absence of subjects or objects in Thai grammar.

Put เท่านั้น at the right edge of its focus

The productive pattern is [focused phrase] + เท่านั้น. A classifier, modifier, relative clause, or prepositional phrase belongs inside the focus and must be completed before เท่านั้น appears.

The noun phrase ผู้สมัครสองคน and the role phrase เจ้าหน้าที่ are intact. English puts only before both, but Thai marks the right boundary instead.

Say the intended contrast aloud as “X, not Y or Z.” Keep the whole expression for X together, then place เท่านั้น after it.

Minimal contrast: the words before เท่านั้น determine scope

Compare a location restriction with a time restriction. The predicate is similar, but the focused phrase changes.

บริษัทส่งสินค้าในกรุงเทพฯเท่านั้นครับ

The company delivers only within Bangkok. (ordinary-polite service information, male speaker; place focus)

บริษัทส่งสินค้าวันจันทร์เท่านั้นครับ

borisat song sinkha wan chan thao nan khrap

The company delivers only on Mondays. (ordinary-polite schedule information, male speaker; time focus)

The first excludes other destinations; the second excludes other delivery days. Stress may make the correction firmer, but it does not override attachment. เท่านั้น still takes the completed phrase immediately before it as its focus.

Subject exclusivity needs a construction that clearly connects the restricted person to the following proposition:

หัวหน้าฝ่ายเท่านั้นที่แก้ไขข้อมูลส่วนนี้ได้ค่ะ

huana fai thao nan thi kae khai khomun suan ni dai kha

Only the department head can edit this part of the data. (formal-polite permission rule, female voice)

Here ที่ introduces the proposition that is true of just one member of the relevant set. This is safer than moving English only loosely around the clause.

The previous question supplies the alternatives

A narrow answer often omits everything except the repeated predicate and focused value. The missing material remains understood because the question establishes it.

ต้องพิมพ์กี่ชุดคะ — พิมพ์สามชุดเท่านั้นค่ะ

Who may view this data set? — Auditors only. (ordinary-polite exchange; female questioner, male respondent)

The replies omit subjects such as “you” and repeated objects such as “the documents.” They do not omit สามชุด, ที่เคาน์เตอร์ชั้นหนึ่ง, or ผู้ตรวจสอบ, because those expressions resolve the active alternatives. See tracking omitted participants for the cues that make such zeros recoverable.

Given topic, new restriction

A topic may be stated first, with the restrictive information in the comment. This is especially natural when a service, document, or procedure is already under discussion.

เรื่องการชำระเงิน ตอนนี้รับบัตรเครดิตเท่านั้นค่ะ

Thai does not need the before an accessible document or it in every following clause. Demonstratives, topic position, and context maintain reference. Nor does ได้ here mark English past tense: it expresses permission or possibility.

เท่านั้น, แค่, and prosody

Both แค่ X and X เท่านั้น can exclude alternatives, but they package the limit differently. แค่ commonly presents X as small, easy, or sufficient; เท่านั้น presents the set as closed and often sounds categorical. The pre-focus แค่ guide gives the complementary scope pattern.

ขอแค่ชื่อกับเบอร์โทรก็พอค่ะ

แบบฟอร์มนี้กรอกเป็นภาษาไทยเท่านั้นครับ

This form may be completed in Thai only. (formal-polite categorical rule, male voice; permitted-language focus)

Strong prominence on ภาษาไทยเท่านั้น can make the rule sound corrective or nonnegotiable. A lighter delivery with ครับ/ค่ะ remains polite but is still exclusive. Politeness does not reopen the excluded alternatives.

Use เท่านั้น only when you intend a real exclusion. Adding it to sound emphatic changes “X is possible” into “nothing relevant except X is possible.”

Negation and discourse correction

When a speaker rejects an overly narrow claim, Thai normally uses ไม่ใช่...เท่านั้น or a “not only...but also...” frame. The scope is not obtained by scattering เท่านั้น near the negative marker.

ปัญหาไม่ได้เกิดจากระบบเท่านั้นครับ ขั้นตอนอนุมัติก็ล่าช้าด้วย

The problem did not arise from the system alone; the approval process was delayed too. (ordinary-polite correction, male speaker)

These sentences deny that the relevant set stops at the focused value. Their second clauses make the additional alternative explicit. Thai verb forms remain unchanged; negation and discourse structure carry the contrast.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

An applicant confirms the limits on a submission.

ส่งเอกสารทางอีเมลได้ไหมคะ

The application remains the shared topic, so neither speaker repeats “I,” “you,” or “the application.” The new focus—submission channel, then signed page—remains explicit.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting post-focus เท่านั้น before its associate

❌ กรุณาส่งเท่านั้นไฟล์ล่าสุดค่ะ

Incorrect order—เท่านั้น must follow the complete focused object phrase.

✅ กรุณาส่งไฟล์ล่าสุดเท่านั้นค่ะ

2. Splitting a noun phrase before its modifier

❌ วันนี้รับลูกค้าได้ห้าเท่านั้นคนครับ

Incorrect order—เท่านั้น cannot split the number from its human classifier.

✅ วันนี้รับลูกค้าได้ห้าคนเท่านั้นครับ

wan ni rap lukkha dai ha khon thao nan khrap

Today we can accept only five customers. (ordinary-polite limit, male speaker; complete number–classifier phrase before เท่านั้น)

3. Omitting the value that resolves the alternatives

❌ ต้องใช้กี่ฉบับคะ — ใช้เท่านั้นค่ะ

Incomplete answer—the exclusive particle cannot identify a quantity whose value is unspoken.

✅ ต้องใช้กี่ฉบับคะ — ใช้ฉบับเดียวเท่านั้นค่ะ

4. Copying English auxiliary and pronoun requirements

❌ เมื่อวานฉันได้ยื่นเอกสารแล้วฉันได้เก็บใบรับรองเท่านั้นค่ะ

Unnatural for the intended simple report—automatic ได้ and repeated ฉัน copy English clause packaging, while เท่านั้น accidentally restricts the certificate.

✅ เมื่อวานยื่นเอกสารแล้วค่ะ เก็บไว้แค่ใบรับรองฉบับเดียว
