Clause-initial ส่วน + topic means “as for X” when X is being contrasted with another active topic. The contrast may involve different people, days, departments, products, or aspects of one plan. ส่วน does not merely connect opposite propositions like แต่ “but”; it first selects a member of a comparison set and then says something about that member.
This construction is common in (ordinary) conversation and (formal) comparison or report writing. Its logic is information-structural: the set must be available, the selected topic is normally explicit, and its comment supplies the new or contrasting information.
For the broader distinction between what a clause is about and what it says about that referent, review topic–comment organization.
Select a member of an active set
The basic frame is clause about A + ส่วน + topic B + comment B.
คุณเนยจะดูแลแขก ส่วนคุณปาล์มจะเตรียมอุปกรณ์ค่ะ
khun noei cha dulae khaek suan khun pam cha triam uppakon kha
Khun Noei will take care of the guests, while Khun Palm will prepare the equipment. (ordinary polite plan, female speaker)
สาขากรุงเทพฯ เปิดตามปกติ ส่วนสาขาเชียงใหม่ปิดปรับปรุงครับ
sakha krung thep poet tam pakati suan sakha chiang mai pit prapprung khrap
The Bangkok branch is open as usual, while the Chiang Mai branch is closed for renovations. (formal-neutral update, male speaker)
The first clause activates a set of staff members; the second selects คุณปาล์ม from that set. The two comments need not be direct logical opposites. Preparing equipment is not the opposite of looking after guests, but the assignments contrast within one plan.
ช่วงเช้าเราจะคุยเรื่องงบประมาณ ส่วนช่วงบ่ายจะทดลองระบบใหม่ค่ะ
chuang chao rao cha khui rueang ngoppraman suan chuang bai cha thotlong rabop mai kha
In the morning we'll discuss the budget; in the afternoon we'll test the new system. (formal-neutral scheduling, female speaker)
In the second half, เรา is omitted because the team remains the recoverable actor. The time topic changes from morning to afternoon; the subject does not. This is licensed zero anaphora, not a rule that Thai clauses never have subjects.
ส่วน versus แต่
แต่ is an adversative connective between propositions: “P, but Q.” ส่วน introduces the entity or domain about which the next comment is made: “as for B, Q.”
ห้องเดิมเล็ก แต่เดินทางสะดวกค่ะ
hong doem lek tae doen thang saduak kha
The original room is small, but it is convenient to get to. (ordinary polite proposition contrast, female speaker)
ห้องเดิมเดินทางสะดวก ส่วนห้องใหม่กว้างกว่าค่ะ
hong doem doen thang saduak suan hong mai kwang kwa kha
The original room is convenient to get to; as for the new room, it's more spacious. (ordinary polite topic contrast, female speaker)
The first keeps one room as topic and contrasts two properties. The second changes topic from the original room to the new room and assigns each a different property. English but, whereas, and as for overlap imperfectly with these Thai choices.
Both markers can occur when both relations matter:
ฝ่ายขายทำยอดได้ตามเป้า แต่กำไรลดลง ส่วนฝ่ายบริการมีทั้งยอดและกำไรเพิ่มขึ้นครับ
fai khai tham yot dai tam pao tae kamrai lot long suan fai borikan mi thang yot lae kamrai phoem khuen khrap
Sales met its target, but profit fell; the service division, by contrast, increased both revenue and profit. (formal report, male speaker)
Here แต่ contrasts results inside the first topic, while ส่วน moves to another division. Treating the two as interchangeable would erase this architecture.
| Function | Productive frame | What remains or changes? |
|---|---|---|
| contrast two topic members | A + comment; ส่วน B + comment | topic changes from A to B |
| contrast one topic's properties | topic + P แต่ Q | topic stays constant |
| resume a known comparison | ส่วน B นั้น + comment | B is explicitly reactivated |
| contrast domains | ส่วนเรื่อง X + comment | discussion moves to aspect X |
| parallel ellipsis | A + V X; ส่วน B + Y | recoverable predicate may be omitted |
| lexical noun “part” | ส่วนหนึ่ง/ส่วนของ + noun | not a topic marker |
Contrast people, things, and discussion domains
The topic after ส่วน can be a full noun phrase or a domain headed by เรื่อง.
เรื่องสถานที่คุณอุ้มจะยืนยันพรุ่งนี้ ส่วนเรื่องอาหารผมจัดการเรียบร้อยแล้วครับ
rueang sathanthi khun um cha yuenyan phrung ni suan rueang ahan phom chatkan riap roi laeo khrap
Khun Um will confirm the venue tomorrow; as for the food, I've already taken care of it. (ordinary polite update, male speaker)
นักเรียนใหม่จะเรียนห้องนี้ ส่วนคนที่เคยเรียนแล้วให้ไปรอห้องข้าง ๆ ค่ะ
nakrian mai cha rian hong ni suan khon thi khoei rian laeo hai pai ro hong khang khang kha
New students will study in this room; those who have studied before should wait in the next room. (ordinary polite instruction, female speaker)
The second example contrasts two classes of people. Thai does not require English-style articles before นักเรียนใหม่ or คนที่.... The noun phrases are interpreted through the active situation.
The construction can begin a new sentence when the preceding discourse has clearly established the comparison:
รุ่นพื้นฐานส่งได้ภายในสัปดาห์นี้ครับ ส่วนรุ่นพิเศษ ลูกค้าต้องรอถึงต้นเดือนหน้า
run phuenthan song dai phainai sapda ni khrap suan run phiset luk kha tong ro thueng ton duean na
The basic model can be delivered this week. As for the special model, the customer must wait until early next month. (formal-neutral explanation, male speaker)
The slight spoken pause after รุ่นพิเศษ separates topic from comment. Thai writing may use a comma for readability in a long sentence, but it does not insert artificial spaces inside the noun phrase, and punctuation is not what makes the topic contrastive.
Parallelism and responsible omission
Parallel clauses make repeated predicates easy to recover. This can create a compact (informal-to-ordinary) contrast.
กาแฟผมรับไม่หวานครับ ส่วนชาเอาหวานน้อย
kafae phom rap mai wan khrap suan cha ao wan noi
I'll have the coffee unsweetened; as for the tea, make it lightly sweet. (ordinary polite order, male speaker; repeated ordering frame omitted)
The second half does not repeat ผมรับ because the order and customer remain active. However, the contrastive topic ชา cannot disappear: distinguishing coffee from tea is precisely the point.
When actors change, state them:
รายงานผมจะตรวจเอง ส่วนใบเสนอราคาให้คุณมิ้นตรวจครับ
raingan phom cha truat eng suan bai sanoe rakha hai khun min truat khrap
I'll check the report myself; as for the quotation, have Khun Min check it. (ordinary polite allocation, male speaker)
Omitting คุณมิ้น would change the assignment. Efficient Thai discourse omits recoverable material, not contrastively new participants.
Lexical ส่วน is a different use
ส่วน also means “part, portion, section.” The surrounding syntax distinguishes the noun from the discourse marker.
ส่วนหนึ่งของรายได้จะนำไปสนับสนุนโรงเรียนในชุมชนค่ะ
suan nueng khong raidai cha nam pai sanapsanun rongrian nai chumchon kha
Part of the income will be used to support schools in the community. (formal statement, female speaker; lexical noun ส่วน)
Here ส่วนหนึ่งของรายได้ is one noun phrase. It neither changes topics nor contrasts reports. English speakers should learn the constructions, not assign one fixed translation to every token of ส่วน.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers are dividing tasks for a seminar:
ใครจะรับแขก แล้วใครจะดูแลห้องคะ
khrai cha rap khaek laeo khrai cha dulae hong kha
Who will receive the guests, and who will take care of the room? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
คุณกอล์ฟจะรับแขกครับ ส่วนผมจะดูแลเรื่องอุปกรณ์
khun kop cha rap khaek khrap suan phom cha dulae rueang uppakon
Khun Golf will receive the guests; as for me, I'll take care of the equipment. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
แล้วช่วงเช้าล่ะคะ
laeo chuang chao la kha
And what about the morning? (ordinary polite follow-up, female speaker)
ช่วงเช้าเราเตรียมห้องครับ ส่วนช่วงบ่ายเริ่มลงทะเบียน
chuang chao rao triam hong khrap suan chuang bai roem long thabian
In the morning we'll prepare the room; in the afternoon registration begins. (ordinary polite scheduling, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Using ส่วน for a contrast inside one unchanged topic
❌ ผมอยากไป ส่วนไม่มีเวลาครับ
Incorrect for the intended ‘but’: ไม่มีเวลา is a contrasting proposition, not a newly selected topic.
✅ ผมอยากไป แต่ไม่มีเวลาครับ
phom yak pai tae mai mi wela khrap
I want to go, but I don't have time. (ordinary polite proposition contrast, male speaker)
2. Starting with ส่วน when no contrasting set exists
❌ ส่วนผมจะส่งสรุปให้พรุ่งนี้ครับ
Contextually incomplete as an all-new answer—ส่วน presents ผม as one member of an already active contrast.
✅ ผมจะส่งสรุปให้พรุ่งนี้ครับ
phom cha song sarup hai phrung ni khrap
I'll send you the summary tomorrow. (ordinary polite neutral answer, male speaker)
3. Placing ส่วน after the topic it should introduce
❌ คุณขวัญส่วนจะดูแลการลงทะเบียนค่ะ
Incorrect topic-marker order: ส่วน precedes the newly contrasted topic.
✅ ส่วนคุณขวัญจะดูแลการลงทะเบียนค่ะ
suan khun khwan cha dulae kan long thabian kha
As for Khun Khwan, she'll take care of registration. (ordinary polite continuation after another assignment, female speaker)
4. Omitting the very topic being contrasted
❌ แผนเดิมใช้เวลาสามวัน ส่วนใช้เวลาห้าวันครับ
Unclear—the second plan is contrastively new and cannot be recovered from this sentence.
✅ แผนเดิมใช้เวลาสามวัน ส่วนแผนสำรองใช้เวลาห้าวันครับ
phaen doem chai wela sam wan suan phaen samrong chai wela ha wan khrap
The original plan takes three days; the backup plan takes five. (formal-neutral comparison, male speaker)
5. Treating ส่วน as a general translation of English for
❌ เอกสารชุดนี้ส่วนลูกค้าต่างชาติค่ะ
Incorrect—topic-marker ส่วน does not mark an intended recipient.
✅ เอกสารชุดนี้สำหรับลูกค้าต่างชาติค่ะ
ekkasan chut ni samrap luk kha tang chat kha
This document set is for international clients. (formal-neutral explanation, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- ส่วน + topic + comment selects one member of an active contrast set and says something about it.
- แต่ contrasts propositions under one continuing topic; ส่วน normally changes the topic member or discussion domain.
- The contrasted topic remains overt. Shared actors or predicates may be omitted only when parallel structure makes them recoverable.
- ส่วน also functions as the noun “part”; its noun syntax must not be confused with the discourse marker.
- English but, whereas, as for, and for do not map one-to-one onto ส่วน.
