Thailand commonly numbers civil years with the Buddhist Era: พ.ศ. abbreviates พุทธศักราช. International systems and globally oriented Thai documents often use ค.ศ., คริสต์ศักราช, whose number corresponds to CE/AD. In a modern January-to-December year, พ.ศ. 2569 and ค.ศ. 2026 identify the same year.
Using a Buddhist Era year is a calendar convention, not proof of an individual writer's religious belief. In daily life the practical task is to notice the era label, preserve Thai day–month–year order, and convert only when the receiving system requires it.
The era label comes before the year
Thai normally writes พ.ศ. 2569 and ค.ศ. 2026, with the label before the number. In careful speech, the abbreviations are read พอ สอ and คอ สอ. Expanded พุทธศักราช and คริสต์ศักราช are more formal.
| Form | Typical setting | Register |
|---|---|---|
| พ.ศ. 2569 | Thai civil records, domestic forms, news, school documents | neutral written / formal |
| พุทธศักราช 2569 | proclamations, careful reading, ceremonial wording | formal |
| ค.ศ. 2026 | international forms, software, global history and research | neutral / academic |
| ปี 2569 | conversation when everyone already knows the system | informal to neutral; potentially ambiguous |
ใบรับรองฉบับนี้ออกให้เมื่อวันที่ 8 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2569
bai raprong chabap ni ok hai muea wan thi paet kanyayon pho so song phan ha roi hok sip kao
This certificate was issued on September 8, BE 2569. (formal document wording)
ฐานข้อมูลภาษาอังกฤษแสดงปี ค.ศ. 2026 ค่ะ
than khomun phasa angkrit sadaeng pi kho so song phan yi sip hok kha
The English-language database displays the year CE 2026. (female staff member)
The date uses day + month + year, and the document is counted with ฉบับ. There is no equivalent of English the before the database or certificate. The verbs ออกให้ and แสดง do not carry past or present endings; the document date and current context supply time.
Convert modern years by 543
For corresponding years in the modern solar calendar:
| Direction | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| CE to BE | 2026 + 543 | 2569 |
| BE to CE | 2570 − 543 | 2027 |
พ.ศ. 2570 ตรงกับ ค.ศ. 2027 ครับ
pho so song phan ha roi chet sip trong kap kho so song phan yi sip chet khrap
BE 2570 corresponds to CE 2027. (male speaker, modern years)
ถ้าระบบรับเฉพาะ ค.ศ. ให้ลบ 543 จากปี พ.ศ. ค่ะ
tha rabop rap chapho kho so hai lop ha roi si sip sam chak pi pho so kha
If the system accepts only CE, subtract 543 from the BE year. (female staff member)
This arithmetic is exact for corresponding modern years, but it is not a universal rule for archival dates. Under the Thai solar calendar adopted in 1889, the official civil year began on April 1; the 1941 reform moved the start to January 1. January–March dates under that former system—and earlier records using other eras or year boundaries—need source-specific checking. The dedicated Buddhist and Common Era page explains that boundary in detail.
Dates put day before month
A full modern Thai date normally follows วันที่ + day + month + era + year. In compact writing, วันที่ may be omitted, but the day still precedes the month.
นัดครั้งต่อไปวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2570 นะคะ
nat khrang to pai wan thi sip si kumphaphan pho so song phan ha roi chet sip na kha
The next appointment is on February 14, BE 2570, okay? (female staff member)
สัญญามีผลตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2569 ถึงวันที่ 30 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2570
sanya mi phon tangtae wan thi nueng tulakhom pho so song phan ha roi hok sip kao thueng wan thi sam sip kanyayon pho so song phan ha roi chet sip
The contract is effective from October 1, BE 2569, through September 30, BE 2570. (formal written register)
The date phrase itself needs no English-style on. ตั้งแต่...ถึง... supplies the range, and มีผล is the formal predicate “be in effect.” Month names are nouns, not capitalized proper-name forms in Thai. See dates and month order.
A respectful form-help scenario
Lena is completing a Thai form whose year field is labeled พ.ศ. She asks a clerk rather than silently entering the CE number from her passport.
ลีนา: ขอโทษค่ะ ช่องปีเกิดต้องกรอกเป็น พ.ศ. ใช่ไหมคะ
lina kho thot kha chong pi koet tong krok pen pho so chai mai kha
Lena: Excuse me, the birth-year field has to be completed in BE, right? (female applicant)
เจ้าหน้าที่: ใช่ครับ ถ้าเกิดปี ค.ศ. 1998 ให้กรอก พ.ศ. 2541 ครับ
chaonathi chai khrap tha koet pi kho so nueng phan kao roi kao sip paet hai krok pho so song phan ha roi si sip et khrap
Clerk: Yes. If you were born in CE 1998, enter BE 2541. (male clerk)
ลีนา: เข้าใจแล้วค่ะ ส่วนวันหมดอายุให้คัดลอกตามหนังสือเดินทางได้เลยใช่ไหมคะ
lina khao chai laeo kha suan wan mot ayu hai khat lok tam nangsue doen thang dai loei chai mai kha
Lena: I understand. As for the expiry date, I can copy it exactly from the passport, right? (female applicant)
เจ้าหน้าที่: ใช่ครับ กรุณาคัดลอกทั้งวันที่และปีตามเอกสารครับ
chaonathi chai khrap karuna khat lok thang wan thi lae pi tam ekkasan khrap
Clerk: Yes. Please copy both the date and year as they appear on the document. (male clerk)
ต้องกรอกเป็น... identifies the required format. In the reply, ถ้าเกิดปี... omits “you” because the applicant is obvious. ส่วน shifts topic from birth year to expiry date. The scenario shows why calendar conversion and document transcription are different tasks: convert a requested year field, but copy a source document when instructed.
An authentic-style public notice
Formal notices commonly spell out the era each time a date range crosses a year boundary.
ประกาศรับสมัครตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2569 ถึงวันที่ 15 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2570 กรุณายื่นเอกสารภายในวันและเวลาที่กำหนด
prakat rap samak tangtae wan thi nueng phruetsachikayon pho so song phan ha roi hok sip kao thueng wan thi sip ha mokkarakhom pho so song phan ha roi chet sip karuna yuen ekkasan phai nai wan lae wela thi kamnot
Applications are open from November 1, BE 2569, through January 15, BE 2570. Please submit the documents within the stated date and time. (formal notice)
ประกาศรับสมัคร is a compressed institutional heading. กรุณา + verb directs the reader without an overt “you,” and ที่กำหนด modifies “date and time” as “that are specified.” No final ครับ/ค่ะ is necessary because an institution, not an individually gendered speaker, voices the notice.
Arabic and Thai digits are both visible
Modern Thai documents frequently use Arabic digits, as the examples above do. Thai digits remain visible in ceremonial inscriptions, some formal documents, and stylistically Thai settings; they are not obligatory on every Thai form.
อาคารนี้สร้างเมื่อพุทธศักราช ๒๕๖๙
akhan ni sang muea phutthasakkarat song phan ha roi hok sip kao
This building was constructed in Buddhist Era 2569. (formal commemorative inscription using Thai digits)
The numeral shape changes, but the spoken cardinal does not. A learner should recognize both scripts and reproduce the style of the actual document. Thai numerals in context treats where each set is natural.
Calendar vocabulary does not conjugate the verb
Everyday time expressions anchor an invariant predicate. ปีที่แล้ว, ปีนี้, and ปีหน้า mean “last year,” “this year,” and “next year”; เมื่อ... can locate an event in the past.
ปีที่แล้วบริษัทใช้ พ.ศ. ในใบเสร็จ แต่ปีนี้ใช้ทั้งสองระบบค่ะ
pi thi laeo borisat chai pho so nai bai set tae pi ni chai thang song rabop kha
Last year the company used BE on its receipts, but this year it uses both systems. (female employee)
ใช้ has the same form in both clauses. Thai expresses the contrast through ปีที่แล้ว, ปีนี้, and แต่, not by changing the verb from used to uses. This is a recurring difference from English tense packaging.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting the month before the date number
❌ งานเริ่มกันยายนวันที่แปด พ.ศ. 2569
Incorrect ordinary Thai full-date order.
✅ งานเริ่มวันที่ 8 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2569 ค่ะ
ngan roem wan thi paet kanyayon pho so song phan ha roi hok sip kao kha
The event starts on September 8, BE 2569. (female speaker)
2. Putting the era label after its number
❌ แบบฟอร์มลงวันที่ 8 กันยายน 2569 พ.ศ.
Incorrect standard placement of the Buddhist Era label.
✅ แบบฟอร์มลงวันที่ 8 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2569
baep fom long wan thi paet kanyayon pho so song phan ha roi hok sip kao
The form is dated September 8, BE 2569. (formal document wording)
3. Reversing the conversion
❌ ค.ศ. 2026 ตรงกับ พ.ศ. 1483
Incorrect conversion: the BE number must be 543 greater for these modern years.
✅ ค.ศ. 2026 ตรงกับ พ.ศ. 2569 ครับ
kho so song phan yi sip hok trong kap pho so song phan ha roi hok sip kao khrap
CE 2026 corresponds to BE 2569. (male speaker)
4. Adding เป็น before a temporal predicate
❌ บัตรใบนี้เป็นจะหมดอายุปีหน้า
Incorrect: จะ directly precedes the future predicate; เป็น is not a tense auxiliary.
✅ บัตรใบนี้จะหมดอายุวันที่ 30 มิถุนายนปีหน้าค่ะ
bat bai ni cha mot ayu wan thi sam sip mithunayon pi na kha
This card will expire on June 30 next year. (female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- พ.ศ. and ค.ศ. precede their year numbers and select different numbering conventions.
- For corresponding modern years, BE = CE + 543; dates under the former April-start civil system and earlier archival dates require source-specific checking.
- Thai full dates use day–month–year order and need no English article or preposition inside the date.
- Arabic digits are ordinary in modern Thai; Thai digits carry context-specific formal or stylistic value.
- Official notices omit “you” and rely on กรุณา, document labels, and fixed order; verbs remain invariant.
- A Buddhist Era date is a civil convention, not evidence about an individual's religion.
