Fixing English This–Noun Order

English starts this book and those cars with a demonstrative. Standard Central Thai usually builds an individuated count-noun phrase in the other direction: หนังสือเล่มนี้ “this book,” รถคันนั้น “that car,” บ้านหลังโน้น “that house over there.” The durable repair is not “move this to the end.” It is noun + appropriate classifier + นี้/นั้น/โน้น.

This page diagnoses English-shaped demonstratives. The full system of distance, classifier choice, and ellipsis is covered in classifier phrases with นี้, นั้น, and โน้น.

Pair 1: rebuild “this book”

❌ นี้หนังสืออ่านง่ายค่ะ

Incorrect English demonstrative-first order—นี้ cannot occupy the ordinary prenominal slot of ‘this.’

✅ หนังสือเล่มนี้อ่านง่ายค่ะ

nangsue lem ni an ngai kha

This book is easy to read. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)

Thai begins with the kind of entity, หนังสือ, identifies one volume with เล่ม, and then locates that referent with นี้. Think “book–volume–this,” not “this–book.”

💡
For an ordinary count noun, say the category first, then the classifier, then the demonstrative. The classifier is the anchor that turns “this” into “this particular member.”

Pair 2: rebuild “that car”

❌ นั้นรถขวางทางออกครับ

Incorrect use of นั้น before รถ—the ordinary noun phrase needs noun + classifier + demonstrative order.

✅ รถคันนั้นขวางทางออกครับ

rot khan nan khwang thang ok khrap

That car is blocking the exit. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker)

คัน is the conventional classifier for a vehicle. Moving นั้น without adding the classifier leaves the English category structure intact.

Pair 3: distinguish นี้ from presentative นี่

Learners sometimes hear นี่ at the start of a clause and treat it as permission to put นี้ before any noun. The two forms and constructions differ.

❌ นี้คือกระเป๋าของฉันค่ะ

Incorrect spelling for the intended presentative ‘this is’—use independent นี่, not postnominal นี้.

✅ นี่คือกระเป๋าของฉันค่ะ

ni khue krapao khong chan kha

This is my bag. (ordinary-polite identification, female speaker; นี่ stands independently)

✅ กระเป๋าใบนี้เป็นของฉันค่ะ

krapao bai ni pen khong chan kha

This bag is mine. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker; นี้ follows classifier ใบ)

The rejected form is not evidence for “this + noun.” นี่ can point independently or introduce what follows; นี้ in the classifier construction modifies the preceding nominal unit.

Pair 4: numbers precede the classifier

❌ สามหนังสือนี้เป็นของห้องสมุดครับ

Incorrect English-shaped count and demonstrative phrase—the noun must come first and เล่ม is missing.

✅ หนังสือสามเล่มนี้เป็นของห้องสมุดครับ

nangsue sam lem ni pen khong hongsamut khrap

These three books belong to the library. (ordinary-polite statement, male speaker)

With an exact count, the frame is noun + number + classifier + demonstrative. นี้ scopes over the group สามเล่ม. It does not attach directly to the English sequence “three books.”

Pair 5: descriptions stay after the noun

❌ นี้สีฟ้าเสื้อลดราคาอยู่ค่ะ

Incorrect English-style stack—both นี้ and สีฟ้า have been put before the garment noun.

✅ เสื้อสีฟ้าตัวนี้ยังมีไซซ์ใหญ่ค่ะ

suea si fa tua ni yang mi sai yai kha

This light-blue shirt is still available in a large size. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)

A practical expanded order is noun + description + classifier + demonstrative. With a number, use noun + description + number + classifier + demonstrative:

✅ เสื้อสีฟ้าสองตัวนั้นขายไปแล้วครับ

suea si fa song tua nan khai pai laeo khrap

Those two light-blue shirts have already been sold. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker)

Thai modifier order is not produced by reversing every English word. Start from the head เสื้อ, build the color subset, count its members, and finally locate the group.

Pair 6: do not omit a known classifier in a count frame

Bare noun + demonstrative is possible with many nouns, as in ร้านนี้ “this shop” and อาคารนี้ “this building.” But a numeral and demonstrative normally require the classifier frame.

❌ ฉันจะซื้อหนังสือสองนี้ค่ะ

Incorrect counted-demonstrative frame—สอง cannot connect directly to นี้ without เล่ม.

✅ ฉันจะซื้อหนังสือสองเล่มนี้ค่ะ

chan cha sue nangsue song lem ni kha

I'll buy these two books. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)

Calling every หนังสือนี้ or ร้านนี้ ungrammatical would be false. Classifierless reference varies with lexical type, discourse, and how strongly an individual is being singled out. The narrower correction is firm: do not delete the classifier from number + classifier + demonstrative.

💡
Do not insert a classifier solely because a demonstrative appears. It is indispensable in the explicit number + classifier + demonstrative frame; elsewhere, noun type and the strength of individual selection determine whether a classifierless phrase is natural.

Pair 7: use the classifier that matches the construal

❌ รถอันนั้นเป็นของบริษัทค่ะ

Poor ordinary classifier choice for a car—generic อัน replaces conventional vehicle classifier คัน.

✅ รถคันนั้นเป็นของบริษัทค่ะ

rot khan nan pen khong borisat kha

That car belongs to the company. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)

General อัน is useful with certain nouns and as independent อันนี้/อันนั้น when the referent's class is unimportant or unclear. It is not a universal substitute for คัน, เล่ม, ใบ, หลัง, or ตัว. Classifier selection can even change construal:

กาแฟแก้วนี้ลูกค้าขอหวานน้อยค่ะ

kafae kaeo ni luk kha kho wan noi kha

The customer requested this glass of coffee less sweet. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker; one prepared serving)

กาแฟถุงนั้นคั่วเมื่อวานครับ

kafae thung nan khua muea wan khrap

That bag of coffee was roasted yesterday. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; one package)

The demonstrative is constant, but แก้ว and ถุง tell the listener what kind of unit is being pointed out.

Pair 8: preserve the classifier under noun ellipsis

English replaces a repeated noun with one. Thai commonly leaves the classifier to carry that reference.

❌ ฉันชอบหนังสือสองเล่ม แต่จะซื้อนี้ค่ะ

Unclear learner repair—นี้ has been left without the classifier that identifies a volume.

✅ ฉันชอบหนังสือสองเล่ม แต่สุดท้ายจะซื้อเล่มนี้ค่ะ

chan chop nangsue song lem tae sutthai cha sue lem ni kha

I like two books, but in the end I'll buy this one. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)

เล่มนี้ retrieves a book because เล่ม preserves the relevant class. In a vehicle context, คันนี้ retrieves a vehicle. Independent อันนี้ is also grammatical in suitable generic contexts, but it deliberately avoids that lexical classification.

Pair 9: keep distal and far-distal forms after the classifier

❌ โน้นบ้านเป็นของคุณยายครับ

Incorrect English demonstrative-first order for the intended noun phrase ‘that house over there.’

✅ บ้านหลังโน้นเป็นของคุณยายครับ

ban lang non pen khong khun yai khrap

That house over there belongs to Grandma. (ordinary-polite statement, male speaker)

นี้ usually points near the speaker or to something current; นั้น points farther away or back to something established; โน้น directs attention distinctly over there. Discourse use is more flexible than three measured distances, but all three close the ordinary classifier frame.

A selection misunderstanding

A customer points across a clothing display. Her English-shaped phrase leaves the assistant unsure whether she means the nearby shirt or another one already under discussion.

❌ ขอนี้เสื้อค่ะ

Malformed learner request—demonstrative-first order does not package a selectable shirt naturally.

✅ หมายถึงเสื้อตัวนี้หรือเสื้อตัวนั้นคะ

maikhwam thueng suea tua ni rue suea tua nan kha

Do you mean this shirt or that shirt? (ordinary-polite clarification, female assistant; supplies both natural alternatives)

เสื้อตัวนี้ค่ะ ตัวสีฟ้า

suea tua ni kha tua si fa

This shirt—the blue one. (ordinary-polite repair, female customer; ตัว carries the repeated garment reference)

The repair does more than move นี้. It supplies ตัว, contrasts two deictic centers, and then uses classifier ellipsis in ตัวสีฟ้า “the blue one.”

Editing checklist

  1. Find English-shaped this/that/those + noun sequences.
  2. Decide whether the demonstrative is independent นี่/นั่น/โน่น or postnominal นี้/นั้น/โน้น.
  3. For an individuated count noun, put the noun first.
  4. Choose the classifier from the intended semantic unit.
  5. Put a numeral before that classifier.
  6. Put นี้/นั้น/โน้น after the classifier.
  7. Keep simple descriptions after the noun and before the final classifier–demonstrative unit.
  8. Under noun ellipsis, retain the classifier if it carries useful referential information.
  9. Do not condemn every bare noun + demonstrative; check noun type and discourse context.

Common Mistakes

The nine pairs above correct demonstrative-first transfer, confusion between นี่ and นี้, number and modifier placement, missing or generic classifiers, lost classifier information under ellipsis, and distance contrasts. The central skill is construction diagnosis: Thai demonstratives locate an already built nominal unit rather than opening an English determiner slot.

Key Takeaways

  • Build an individuated phrase as noun + classifier + demonstrative.
  • Add an exact count before the classifier: noun + number + classifier + demonstrative.
  • Independent นี่ “this/here” is not prenominal นี้.
  • Classifier choice packages the intended referent, and the classifier may remain when the noun is omitted.
  • Bare noun + demonstrative can be natural in some contexts; correct the actual construction, not an imagined absolute ban.
