คู่ for Pairs and Partners

คู่ counts units made of two matched, complementary, or socially paired members: รองเท้าสองคู่ “two pairs of shoes,” ถุงเท้าสามคู่ “three pairs of socks,” and นักเต้นสี่คู่ “four pairs of dancers.” It can also be the noun “pair,” “couple,” “partner,” or “counterpart.”

The classifier does not simply mean “two.” It packages two members as one functional or relational unit. Four individual shoes may form two pairs, while four people may or may not form two couples. Thai grammar makes that classifier-based construal explicit.

The core คู่ patterns

FunctionFrameExample
count pairsnoun + numeral + คู่รองเท้าสองคู่ — two pairs of shoes
demonstrativenoun + คู่ + นี้/นั้น/โน้นถุงเท้าคู่นี้ — this pair of socks
introduced pairnoun + คู่ + หนึ่งคู่รักคู่หนึ่ง — a certain couple
ordinalnoun + คู่ + ที่ + numeralนักเต้นคู่ที่สาม — the third dancing pair

ฉันซื้อรองเท้าทำงานสองคู่ค่ะ

chan sue rongthao tham ngan song khu kha

I bought two pairs of work shoes. (polite, female speaker)

ในลิ้นชักมีถุงเท้าสะอาดห้าคู่ครับ

nai linchak mi thungthao sa at ha khu khrap

There are five clean pairs of socks in the drawer. (polite, male speaker)

การแข่งขันรอบนี้มีนักกีฬาหญิงลงแข่งสามคู่

kan khaengkhan rop ni mi nakkila ying long khaeng sam khu

Three pairs of female athletes are competing in this round. (neutral sports context)

English often inserts pair of before the noun. Thai places numeral + คู่ after the noun, with no plural inflection. The count is of pair units, not automatically of individual objects.

💡
Always convert pair counts into member counts mentally: รองเท้าสองคู่ normally represents four individual shoes, while นักเต้นสามคู่ represents six dancers.

Matched objects and paired participants

คู่ is (neutral, everyday) for objects conventionally used in twos, including shoes, socks, gloves, earrings, and chopsticks. It also groups two participants who function together or oppose each other in a match.

ต่างหูคู่นั้นเข้ากับชุดคุณมากค่ะ

tanghu khu nan khao kap chut khun mak kha

That pair of earrings goes very well with your outfit. (polite, female speaker)

ตะเกียบคู่นี้สั้นไป ขอคู่ใหม่ครับ

takiap khu ni san pai kho khu mai khrap

This pair of chopsticks is too short; may I have a new pair? (polite, male speaker)

โค้ชให้ผู้เล่นฝึกกันเป็นคู่

khot hai phulen fuek kan pen khu

The coach had the players practise in pairs. (neutral instruction)

The phrase เป็นคู่ means “as/in pairs” and does not itself state how many pairs. For a count, use นักกีฬาสามคู่ or มีสามคู่. A loose collection of two objects does not require คู่ unless the speaker treats them as matched or functional partners.

คู่ as a noun and as a classifier

In คู่รัก “couple,” คู่ชีวิต “life partner,” and คู่สนทนา “conversation partner,” คู่ contributes lexical relationship meaning. A full noun phrase can still take คู่ as its classifier: คู่รักสองคู่ “two couples,” คู่รักคู่นี้ “this couple.”

ในภาพนี้มีคู่บ่าวสาวสองคู่ค่ะ

nai phap ni mi khu bao sao song khu kha

There are two bride-and-groom couples in this photo. (polite, female speaker)

คู่รักคู่นี้เปิดร้านด้วยกันมาสิบปีแล้วครับ

khu rak khu ni poet ran duai kan ma sip pi laeo khrap

This couple has run a shop together for ten years. (polite, male speaker)

Thai repetition here is structural, not redundant: the first คู่ belongs to the compound noun คู่รัก; the second marks the classifier slot before นี้.

Ellipsis keeps the pairing active

After the noun has been established, คู่ may remain with a demonstrative, modifier, number, or ordinal.

ฉันลองรองเท้าสามคู่แล้ว แต่คู่นี้ใส่สบายที่สุดค่ะ

chan long rongthao sam khu laeo tae khu ni sai sabai thi sut kha

I've tried three pairs of shoes, but this pair is the most comfortable. (polite, female speaker)

คู่สีดำลดราคา ส่วนคู่สีน้ำตาลราคาเต็มครับ

khu si dam lot rakha suan khu si namtan rakha tem khrap

The black pair is discounted; the brown pair is full price. (shoe context; polite male speaker)

English uses pair or ones. Thai elliptical คู่ continues to tell the listener that matched pairs, not single members, are being contrasted. If the conversation shifts to one shoe, use the appropriate individual unit instead.

หนึ่ง and ordinal ที่

รองเท้าหนึ่งคู่ is an exact count. รองเท้าคู่หนึ่ง introduces a particular pair. รองเท้าคู่ที่สอง identifies rank, while คู่แรก is the ordinary “first pair.”

เอาถุงมือหนึ่งคู่ก็พอครับ

ao thungmue nueng khu ko pho khrap

One pair of gloves is enough. (polite, male speaker; exact count)

มีรองเท้าคู่หนึ่งวางอยู่หน้าประตูค่ะ

mi rongthao khu nueng wang yu na pratu kha

A pair of shoes is by the door. (polite, female speaker; introduced pair)

นักเต้นคู่ที่สองพร้อมแล้วครับ

nakten khu thi song phrom laeo khrap

The second pair of dancers is ready. (polite, male speaker; ordinal)

คู่หนึ่ง does not mean “the first pair.” Productive numbered ordinals require คู่ที่ + numeral.

Pair count versus member count

Classifier choice can change the arithmetic. รองเท้า may be counted as matched pairs with คู่ or as individual shoes with ข้าง. People may be counted individually with คน or grouped into pairs with คู่.

กล่องนี้มีรองเท้าสี่ข้าง แต่จับคู่กันได้แค่คู่เดียว

klong ni mi rongthao si khang tae chap khu kan dai khae khu diao

This box has four individual shoes, but only one matching pair can be made. (neutral explanation)

ชั้นเรียนมีนักเรียนยี่สิบคน จับคู่กันได้สิบคู่ค่ะ

chan rian mi nakrian yi sip khon chap khu kan dai sip khu kha

The class has twenty students, so they can form ten pairs. (polite, female speaker)

คน and ข้าง count members; คู่ counts relations between two matched members. This is a particularly clear case of classifier choice changing construal rather than merely agreeing with a noun.

💡
Use คู่ only when the two members form a recognized pair, partnership, or matchup. Two nearby people are สองคน until the discourse pairs them.

A shoe-shop dialogue

วันนี้ลองรองเท้าไปกี่คู่แล้วคะ

wan ni long rongthao pai ki khu laeo kha

How many pairs of shoes have you tried today? (polite, female shop assistant)

สามคู่ครับ ขอซื้อคู่นี้เพราะใส่สบายที่สุด

sam khu khrap kho sue khu ni phro sai sabai thi sut

Three. I'd like to buy this pair because it is the most comfortable. (polite, male customer)

The reply answers with numeral + คู่, omits รองเท้า, then uses คู่ with a demonstrative. Repeating คู่ can sound natural because each occurrence has its own structural role.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying English pair-of order

❌ สองคู่รองเท้าอยู่หน้าประตู

Incorrect — an ordinary Thai pair count uses noun + numeral + คู่.

✅ รองเท้าสองคู่อยู่หน้าประตูค่ะ

rongthao song khu yu na pratu kha

Correct — two pairs of shoes are by the door. (polite, female speaker)

2. Omitting คู่

❌ ฉันซื้อถุงเท้าใหม่สาม

Incorrect — the explicit pair count needs คู่.

✅ ฉันซื้อถุงเท้าใหม่สามคู่ค่ะ

chan sue thungthao mai sam khu kha

Correct — I bought three new pairs of socks. (polite, female speaker)

3. Using general อัน for a conventional pair

❌ ขอถุงมือหนึ่งอันค่ะ

Incorrect for one matched pair — อัน presents a single general object, not a pair.

✅ ขอถุงมือหนึ่งคู่ค่ะ

kho thungmue nueng khu kha

Correct — one pair of gloves, please. (polite, female speaker)

4. Moving the demonstrative before the noun

❌ นี้รองเท้าสวยมาก

Incorrect for ‘this pair of shoes’ — นี้ follows คู่.

✅ รองเท้าคู่นี้สวยมากครับ

rongthao khu ni suai mak khrap

Correct — this pair of shoes is very attractive. (polite, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

Use คู่ for matched objects, couples, partnerships, and matchups. Put numeral + คู่ after the noun, demonstratives after คู่, and retain คู่ when the noun is omitted. Distinguish exact หนึ่งคู่, introductory คู่หนึ่ง, and ordinal คู่ที่สอง. Switch to คน, ข้าง, or another member classifier when counting individuals rather than pair units.
