เล่ม is the conventional classifier for books and many bound volumes, and also for bladed objects such as knives and swords. These categories may not look related to an English speaker, but Thai does not choose classifiers by translating English book, item, or piece. Speakers learn a conventional pairing: หนังสือสามเล่ม “three books,” มีดสองเล่ม “two knives.”
เล่ม does more than complete a count. Before a demonstrative it selects one referent, as in หนังสือเล่มนี้ “this book”; without an overt noun it tracks an established referent, as in เล่มนี้ “this one.” Its position with หนึ่ง or ที่ also distinguishes exact quantity, introduction, and ordinal rank.
The core constructions
| Function | Frame | Example |
|---|---|---|
| count | noun + numeral + เล่ม | สมุดสามเล่ม — three notebooks |
| demonstrative | noun + เล่ม + นี้/นั้น/โน้น | หนังสือเล่มนี้ — this book |
| introduced member | noun + เล่ม + หนึ่ง | นิยายเล่มหนึ่ง — a certain novel |
| ordinal | noun + เล่ม + ที่ + numeral | พจนานุกรมเล่มที่สอง — the second dictionary |
ฉันยืมหนังสือจากห้องสมุดมาสี่เล่ม
chan yuem nangsue chak hongsamut ma si lem
I borrowed four books from the library. (informal; typically female speaker)
เด็กแต่ละคนต้องเตรียมสมุดสองเล่มค่ะ
dek tae la khon tong triam samut song lem kha
Each child needs to prepare two notebooks. (polite, female teacher)
English places four before books and marks the noun as plural. Thai leaves หนังสือ unchanged and uses noun + numeral + เล่ม. A bare noun can still be singular or plural from context, but an explicit count normally needs the classifier.
Books, volumes, and bladed objects
เล่ม is neutral in everyday and polite speech with หนังสือ “book,” สมุด “notebook,” นิยาย “novel,” พจนานุกรม “dictionary,” and หนังสือเดินทาง “passport.” It individuates a bound or volume-like object. The same classifier is conventionally used with มีด “knife,” ดาบ “sword,” and related blades.
หนังสือเดินทางสองเล่มนี้หมดอายุเดือนหน้า
nangsue doen thang song lem ni mot ayu duean na
These two passports expire next month. (neutral administrative context)
พ่อครัวลับมีดสามเล่มก่อนเปิดร้าน
phokhrua lap mit sam lem kon poet ran
The cook sharpened three knives before opening the restaurant. (neutral everyday speech)
ดาบเล่มนั้นจัดแสดงอยู่ในพิพิธภัณฑ์ครับ
dap lem nan chat sadaeng yu nai phiphitthaphan khrap
That sword is on display in the museum. (polite, male speaker)
The grouping is conventional and genuinely requires memorization. Do not infer that every long object or every object with a handle takes เล่ม. Vehicles and umbrellas take คัน, sheets take แผ่น, and general items may take อัน or ชิ้น depending on how they are construed.
Demonstratives follow เล่ม
The ordinary pointing order is noun + เล่ม + demonstrative. นี้ points to a nearby or currently salient volume, นั้น to a more distant or previously mentioned one, and โน้น to one distinctly over there.
หนังสือเล่มนี้อธิบายชัดกว่าค่ะ
nangsue lem ni athibai chat kwa kha
This book explains it more clearly. (polite, female speaker)
ช่วยส่งสมุดเล่มนั้นให้ผมหน่อยครับ
chuai song samut lem nan hai phom noi khrap
Please pass me that notebook. (polite, male speaker)
Putting นี้ before หนังสือ copies English order and fails to build an ordinary Thai demonstrative noun phrase. เล่ม is the individualizing anchor between the noun and the demonstrative. The general system is mapped on demonstrative order.
Ellipsis keeps the category active
Once books or blades are established, เล่ม can remain while the noun is omitted. It functions like English one, but only within a context compatible with เล่ม.
ฉันอ่านนิยายเล่มนี้จบแล้ว
chan an niyai lem ni chop laeo
I have finished this novel. (informal; typically female speaker; full noun phrase)
เล่มนี้อ่านจบแล้ว แต่เล่มนั้นยังไม่ได้เริ่ม
lem ni an chop laeo tae lem nan yang mai dai roem
I have finished this one, but I have not started that one yet. (novels already established; noun ellipsis)
At a knife counter, เล่มนี้ can instead mean “this knife.” The classifier narrows the domain but does not uniquely name the noun. When both books and knives are salient, repeat หนังสือ or มีด rather than relying on เล่ม alone.
หนึ่ง counts or introduces; ที่ ranks
หนังสือหนึ่งเล่ม gives an exact quantity: one book. หนังสือเล่มหนึ่ง introduces an individual book, often for a story or contrast. An ordinal requires เล่ม + ที่ + numeral, while แรก is the ordinary word “first.”
ซื้อคู่มือหนึ่งเล่มก็พอครับ
sue khumue nueng lem ko pho khrap
Buying one manual is enough. (polite, male speaker; exact count)
มีหนังสือเล่มหนึ่งวางอยู่หน้าประตูค่ะ
mi nangsue lem nueng wang yu na pratu kha
A book is lying by the door. (polite, female speaker; newly introduced referent)
หนังสือเล่มที่สองขายหมดแล้วครับ
nangsue lem thi song khai mot laeo khrap
The second book is sold out. (polite, male speaker; ordinal)
ฉันชอบนิยายเล่มแรกที่สุดค่ะ
chan chop niyai lem raek thi sut kha
I like the first novel best. (polite, female speaker)
The contrast is positional. เล่มหนึ่ง does not mean “first,” and เล่มที่หนึ่ง does not simply introduce an indefinite book. Thai lacks a one-to-one counterpart of English articles; classifier syntax and discourse provide the distinctions.
Classifier choice changes the unit
เล่ม counts individual volumes. ชุด counts sets or series treated as packages. The same collection can therefore be described at two levels.
ชั้นนี้มีหนังสือหกเล่ม
chan ni mi nangsue hok lem
There are six individual books on this shelf. (volume construal)
ชั้นนี้มีหนังสือสองชุด ชุดละสามเล่ม
chan ni mi nangsue song chut chut la sam lem
There are two sets of books on this shelf, three volumes per set. (set construal followed by volume count)
Neither classifier is a decorative agreement marker. เล่ม answers “how many volumes?”; ชุด answers “how many sets?” The physical total is six books in both examples, but the organization of the referents differs. See semantic classifier choice for more shifts of counting unit.
Counting dialogue
ต้องคืนหนังสือกี่เล่มคะ
tong khuen nangsue ki lem kha
How many books need to be returned? (polite, female speaker)
สามเล่มครับ เล่มหนึ่งคืนวันนี้ อีกสองเล่มคืนพรุ่งนี้
sam lem khrap lem nueng khuen wan ni ik song lem khuen phrung ni
Three. One will be returned today, and the other two tomorrow. (polite, male speaker; noun omitted)
The reply uses numeral + เล่ม to answer the count and then divides the set with เล่มหนึ่ง and อีกสองเล่ม. Repeating หนังสือ would be grammatical but unnecessarily heavy because the question already establishes the category.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English numeral–noun order
❌ สามหนังสืออยู่ในกระเป๋า
Incorrect — an ordinary Thai count places the noun before numeral + เล่ม.
✅ หนังสือสามเล่มอยู่ในกระเป๋าครับ
nangsue sam lem yu nai krapao khrap
Correct — three books are in the bag. (polite, male speaker)
2. Omitting the classifier
❌ ฉันซื้อสมุดใหม่สอง
Incorrect — the explicit count requires เล่ม.
✅ ฉันซื้อสมุดใหม่สองเล่มค่ะ
chan sue samut mai song lem kha
Correct — I bought two new notebooks. (polite, female speaker)
3. Replacing เล่ม with general อัน
❌ ขอหนังสือสองอันครับ
Incorrect in neutral usage — books take เล่ม.
✅ ขอหนังสือสองเล่มครับ
kho nangsue song lem khrap
Correct — two books, please. (polite, male speaker)
4. Putting the demonstrative before the noun
❌ นี้สมุดเป็นของใคร
Incorrect for ‘this notebook’ — นี้ follows เล่ม.
✅ สมุดเล่มนี้เป็นของใครคะ
samut lem ni pen khong khrai kha
Correct — whose notebook is this? (polite, female speaker)
5. Treating เล่มหนึ่ง as “the first volume”
❌ หนังสือเล่มหนึ่งหมายถึงหนังสือลำดับแรก
Incorrect — เล่มหนึ่ง introduces one volume; it does not mark rank.
✅ เริ่มอ่านหนังสือเล่มแรกก่อนครับ
roem an nangsue lem raek kon khrap
Correct — start by reading the first book. (polite, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
Use เล่ม with books, bound volumes, and conventionally categorized blades. Quantity follows the noun as numeral + เล่ม; a demonstrative follows เล่ม; and elliptical เล่ม retrieves an established volume or blade. Keep exact หนึ่งเล่ม, introductory เล่มหนึ่ง, and ordinal เล่มที่สอง distinct, and switch to ชุด only when sets rather than individual volumes are the intended units.
