Spanish-English Cognates

Spanish and English share thousands of cognados — words with a common Latin or Greek root that look and mean nearly the same in both languages. Learning the patterns that map one to the other gives you an instant vocabulary boost of thousands of words.

The -tion → -ción pattern

English words ending in -tion almost always become -ción in Spanish. These nouns are always feminine.

educationla educación
revolutionla revolución
conditionla condición
attentionla atención
stationla estación
solutionla solución

Necesito más información.

I need more information.

La revolución cambió el país.

The revolution changed the country.

💡
All -ción words take a written accent on the o: nación, información, canción. In the plural, the accent disappears because the stress falls naturally on the new syllable: naciones, informaciones.

The -ly → -mente pattern

English adverbs in -ly become Spanish adverbs in -mente. The ending attaches to the feminine form of the adjective.

Patterns work in both directions. If you know an English word and need a Spanish one, try the transformation; if it produces a real Spanish word, you are usually right. Just watch out for false friends.
