Serbian calls the -л form in дошао је, стигла је, радили су the радни глаголски придев, commonly translated as active l-participle. Its central job is predicative: it combines with auxiliaries to build the perfect, conditional, pluperfect, and future II. A restricted set of these forms can also become declinable adjectives: остарели човек, надошла вода, преостала средства.
That attributive pattern is real, but not freely productive. It is favored by intransitive or reflexive verbs of state, change of state, appearance, disappearance, arrival, and remaining. For an ordinary active event such as the person who wrote, Serbian normally uses a који relative clause rather than inventing an adjective. Forms in -вши require an even sharper distinction: productive дошавши is an indeclinable past verbal adverb, while бивши (former) is a lexicalized adjective.
The Ordinary l-Participle Is Predicative
In a compound tense, the l-participle agrees only in gender and number with the subject and stands in a nominative-shaped form.
| Subject | l-participle of стићи | Perfect |
|---|---|---|
| он | стигао | стигао је |
| она | стигла | стигла је |
| оно | стигло | стигло је |
| они / mixed group | стигли | стигли су |
| оне | стигле | стигле су |
| она | стигла | стигла су |
Гости су стигли нешто после поноћи.
The guests arrived shortly after midnight.
Да смо кренуле раније, стигле бисмо пре гужве.
If we had left earlier, we would have arrived before the traffic. (all-female group)
In стигли су, auxiliary су marks third-person plural and стигли agrees with the subject. In стигле бисмо, conditional бисмо marks first-person plural while feminine plural стигле identifies an all-female group. Neither form declines for case inside the tense.
When an l-Form Becomes an Adjective
Some l-forms acquire an adjective-like resultative or classificatory meaning. They then modify a noun and take the full long-adjective paradigm.
| Source verb | Attributive form | Typical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| остарети | остарели човек | a person who has grown old |
| увенути | увело цвеће | withered flowers |
| нарасти | нарасли трошкови | increased costs |
| нестати | нестала документа | missing/disappeared documents |
| преостати | преостала средства | remaining funds |
| преминути | преминули писац | the deceased writer |
Преко ноћи остарели човек једва је препознао свој одраз.
The man, who had aged overnight, barely recognized his reflection. (literary)
Преостала средства биће пребачена на следећи пројекат.
The remaining funds will be transferred to the next project.
Полиција још тражи нестала документа.
The police are still looking for the missing documents.
The forms do more than locate an event in the past. Остарели describes a resulting state, преостала classifies what is left, and нестала describes current absence resulting from disappearance. Aspect, lexical meaning, and conventional usage jointly license the adjective.
Predicative Agreement versus Adjectival Declension
Compare the perfect писац је преминуо with attributive преминули писац. The attributive masculine singular has long-adjective -и, and oblique cases add adjective endings.
| Function | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| perfect predicate | преминуо | Писац је преминуо. |
| nominative attribute | преминули | преминули писац |
| genitive attribute | преминулог | дело преминулог писца |
| locative attribute | преминулом | о преминулом писцу |
| feminine nominative | преминула | преминула списатељица |
На изложби су представљени рукописи преминулог песника.
The late poet’s manuscripts were presented at the exhibition.
Документарни филм говори о недавно преминулој глумици.
The documentary is about an actress who recently died.
The time adverbs недавно, давно, преко ноћи can preserve a clear event reading inside the noun phrase. That is one reason advanced descriptions sometimes analyze these items as participles in attributive position rather than fully lexical adjectives. For learners, the practical fact is the same: once attributive, the form declines.
What Does Not Become an Attribute
Transitive activity verbs generally do not turn their active l-participle into a noun modifier. Писао can build писао је, but it does not yield an adjective meaning who wrote. Use a relative clause.
Човек који је написао жалбу чека у ходнику.
The man who wrote the complaint is waiting in the hallway.
Жена која је водила састанак послала нам је записник.
The woman who chaired the meeting sent us the minutes.
Serbian likewise uses a relative clause for a live simultaneous activity unless a conventional lexicalized participial adjective exists.
Дете које спава немојте будити.
Do not wake the child who is sleeping.
Forms such as писали човек, водила жена, or an invented adjective from every verb are not standard ways to encode these meanings. The relative-clause guide is the productive solution.
The -вши Boundary
Modern -вши/-ши forms such as дошавши, прочитавши, рекавши are past verbal adverbs (глаголски прилог прошли). They are indeclinable, share their understood subject with the main clause, and are chiefly formal/literary.
Прочитавши уговор, адвокатица је предложила две измене.
Having read the contract, the lawyer proposed two changes. (formal/literary)
Стигавши кући, одмах сам укључио грејање.
Having arrived home, I immediately turned on the heating. (male speaker; formal/literary)
These forms modify the main predication, not a noun. Стигавши гост is therefore not the normal equivalent of the guest who arrived. Use гост који је стигао.
The everyday word бивши is different. It has lexicalized as a fully declinable adjective meaning former or ex-.
Разговарала сам с бившим директором о старом пројекту.
I spoke with the former director about the old project. (female speaker)
Његова бивша колегиница сада води цео тим.
His former colleague now leads the whole team.
Бившим is instrumental masculine and бивша is feminine nominative: unlike productive -вши verbal adverbs, бивши declines. A rare word such as усопши (departed/deceased) belongs to religious/literary vocabulary; it is not a model for freely creating new modern adjectives.
Aspect and Resultative Meaning
Attributive l-forms strongly favor verbs whose aspect and meaning produce a stable state or a salient result. Perfective увенути gives увело цвеће; преостати gives преостали новац. This does not mean every perfective verb allows an attribute.
Увело цвеће смо заменили свежим букетом.
We replaced the wilted flowers with a fresh bouquet.
Нагло порасли трошкови угрозили су цео план.
The sharply increased costs jeopardized the whole plan.
The adverbs нагло and the resultative meanings keep the connection to an event visible. By contrast, transitive perfective написати already has a productive passive adjective написан for the affected object; its active author is expressed by a clause.
Affirmative, Negative, and Question
Once lexicalized or licensed attributively, the form behaves inside the noun phrase like another adjective.
Ово је последњи преостали примерак каталога.
This is the last remaining copy of the catalog.
Ово није последњи преостали примерак; у магацину их има још.
This is not the last remaining copy; there are more in the warehouse.
Да ли је ово последњи преостали примерак каталога?
Is this the last remaining copy of the catalog?
Negation and question syntax belong to the copula је / није / да ли је. The attributive form itself remains inside the noun phrase and agrees with примерак.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Predicate or Attribute?
Turn a perfect predicate into an established adjective phrase and then put it in the genitive.
Писац је преминуо. Преминули писац. Роман преминулог писца.
The writer died. The deceased writer. The deceased writer’s novel. Answer: predicative преминуо becomes attributive преминули and genitive преминулог.
Task 2: -вши Adverb or Lexicalized Adjective?
Use one invariant past verbal adverb and one declined form of бивши.
Завршивши интервју, разговарала је с бившом уредницом.
Having finished the interview, she spoke with the former editor. Answer: завршивши is invariant and adverbial; бившом is feminine instrumental.
Common Mistakes
Using an ordinary l-participle as a productive attribute
❌ Писали човек чека испред канцеларије.
Incorrect for ‘the man who wrote’—even the adjective-shaped form писали is not a productive attribute from писати.
✅ Човек који је писао чека испред канцеларије.
The man who was writing is waiting outside the office.
Leaving an attributive form in its predicate shape
❌ Преминуо писац је добио постхумно признање.
Incorrect as a noun modifier—the masculine singular attributive form is преминули.
✅ Преминули писац је добио постхумно признање.
The deceased writer received a posthumous award.
Failing to decline the attribute
❌ Читали смо о преминули писац.
Incorrect—о takes the locative, so both the participial adjective and noun must decline.
✅ Читали смо о преминулом писцу.
We read about the deceased writer.
Treating -вши as a productive noun modifier
❌ Стигавши гост је оставио капут у ходнику.
Incorrect—стигавши is an indeclinable verbal adverb, not an adjective modifying гост.
✅ Гост који је стигао оставио је капут у ходнику.
The guest who arrived left his coat in the hallway.
Treating бивши as indeclinable
❌ Разговарали смо с бивши директорком.
Incorrect—lexicalized бивши declines like an adjective; feminine instrumental is бившом.
✅ Разговарали смо с бившом директорком.
We spoke with the former director.
