Разумети means understand a person, message, reason, language, or situation. It is descriptively biaspectual: the same form commonly denotes an ongoing state of understanding and can also present the moment of grasping something as a bounded whole. Its government and reflexive patterns matter as much as its distinctive present разумем and imperative разуми.
Principal parts and paradigm
| Form | разумети |
|---|---|
| present | разумем, разумеш, разуме, разумемо, разумете, разумеју |
| l-participle | разумео, разумела, разумело, разумели, разумеле, разумела |
| imperative | разуми, разумимо, разумите |
| future | разумећу, разумећеш, разумеће... |
The headword and all its principal parts keep the full stem разум-. The present has -ем and third-person plural разумеју. Masculine разумео differs from feminine разумела; the imperative is разуми, not разумеј.
Разумем питање, али не знам одговор.
I understand the question, but I don't know the answer.
Разумете ли зашто је рок померен?
Do you understand why the deadline was moved? (plural or polite)
Direct object and clitics
The understood person or thing is accusative: разумети питање, колегу, њу, их.
Не разумем овај део упутства.
I don't understand this part of the instructions.
Говори мало спорије; не разумем те добро.
Speak a little more slowly; I don't understand you well.
Object clitics take the normal second-position slot. In the past, the auxiliary and object clitic form a cluster:
Нисам га разумео због буке у сали.
I didn't understand him because of the noise in the hall. (male speaker)
The masculine animate object га does not control l-participle agreement. Разумео agrees with the omitted male speaker; a female speaker says нисам га разумела.
Clause complements
Разумети can introduce a factual да-clause or an embedded question with зашто, како, шта, где. These clauses provide the content understood.
Разумем да вам треба више времена.
I understand that you need more time. (polite or plural вам)
Сада разумем зашто се није јавила.
Now I understand why she didn't get in touch.
English understand someone to mean... does not transfer word for word. Serbian normally uses разумети да, схватити да, or reformulates what the person means.
Context supplies aspect
Stative present разумем is imperfective: it describes knowledge holding now. In a resultative past with коначно, одједном, the same lexeme can be perfective—one reaches an understanding.
Добро разумем правила, али ми треба више вежбе.
I understand the rules well, but I need more practice. (ongoing state)
Тек сам после другог примера разумео правило.
I understood the rule only after the second example. (male speaker; bounded grasping)
Secondary imperfective разумевати explicitly presents continued, repeated, or interpretive understanding and is common in analytical prose, though everyday Serbian often uses разумети itself.
Различите школе овај појам разумевају на различите начине.
Different schools understand this concept in different ways. (academic/analytical)
Perfective схватити often means “grasp” or “realize” at a particular moment. It overlaps with resultative разумети but is not a mechanical obligatory partner.
Кад је видео празну канцеларију, схватио је да је погрешио дан.
When he saw the empty office, he realized that he had the wrong day.
The biaspectual-verbs guide explains how adverbials and clause type reveal the viewpoint.
Reflexive and reciprocal patterns
Разумети се у + accusative means be knowledgeable about a field. Here се is obligatory and the construction does not simply mean “understand oneself.”
Моја сестра се одлично разуме у старе фотоапарате.
My sister knows a great deal about old cameras.
Plural разумети се can also be reciprocal: understand one another, get along, or communicate successfully.
Иако се понекад не слажемо, добро се разумемо.
Although we sometimes disagree, we understand each other well.
Context separates expert разуме се у from reciprocal разумеју се. The fixed parenthetical разуме се means “of course/naturally” and is stylistically more formal than everyday наравно.
Разуме се, трошкови превоза биће надокнађени.
Naturally, travel expenses will be reimbursed. (formal)
Commands and negative advice
Positive разуми ме asks for empathy or acceptance, not merely auditory comprehension. A negative warning commonly uses немој + infinitive.
Разуми ме, нисам могао да донесем одлуку без осталих.
Try to understand me; I couldn't make the decision without the others. (male speaker)
Немој ме погрешно разумети; предлог ми се допада.
Don't misunderstand me; I like the proposal.
Погрешно разумети is the neutral phrase “misunderstand.” Derived неразумети is not its ordinary replacement.
Micro-dialogue
Да ли ме разумеш? — Разумем шта тражиш, али не разумем како то можемо да завршимо до петка.
Do you understand me? — I understand what you're asking for, but I don't understand how we can finish it by Friday.
The first ме is accusative, while both embedded questions provide propositional content. Serbian needs no English-style do auxiliary in Да ли ме разумеш?
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Build the forms
Give first-person singular, third-person plural, masculine and feminine l-participles, and the singular imperative of разумети. Then use the object clitic га in one past sentence.
Task 2: Change the construction
Express “I understand the rule,” “I finally understood the rule,” “I know about wine,” and “We understand each other.” Identify direct-object, biaspectual-result, expert-reflexive, and reciprocal frames.
Common Mistakes
❌ Ја разумим питање.
Incorrect — first-person present is разумем, not разумим.
✅ Разумем питање, али ми треба тренутак да одговорим.
I understand the question, but I need a moment to answer.
❌ Ана је рекла: „Нисам је разумео.“
Incorrect if Ana is the speaker — the l-participle must agree with her: разумела.
✅ Ана је рекла: „Нисам је разумела.“
Ana said, “I didn't understand her.“
❌ Разумеј ме бар овог пута.
Incorrect imperative formation — standard Serbian uses разуми.
✅ Разуми ме бар овог пута.
Try to understand me, at least this once.
❌ Он се добро разуме старе аутомобиле.
Incorrect — the expertise construction requires у + accusative.
✅ Он се добро разуме у старе аутомобиле.
He knows a lot about vintage cars.
❌ Не разумем он због буке.
Incorrect — the direct object cannot remain nominative он; neutral accusative is га.
✅ Не разумем га због буке.
I can't understand him because of the noise.
Key Takeaways
- Learn разумети — разумем — разумеју — разумео/разумела — разуми as one set.
- Direct objects are accusative; content can be a да-clause or embedded question.
- Context allows stative imperfective and bounded perfective readings; разумевати makes an ongoing/repeated reading explicit.
- Reflexive разумети се у + accusative marks expertise, while plural разумети се can be reciprocal.
