Proverb: Јутро је паметније од вечери

Јутро је паметније од вечери advises delaying a difficult decision until sleep has cooled emotions and clarified the problem. English normally says “Sleep on it” or “Things will look clearer in the morning.” Serbian instead personifies morning and evening, then builds an ordinary grammatical comparison: neuter паметније agrees with јутро, and од assigns the genitive to вечери.

The complete proverb

Јутро је паметније од вечери.

Morning is wiser than evening; sleep on it.

The literal image is intelligible in English, but the idiomatic force matters more: do not decide tonight while you are tired, angry, frightened, or overwhelmed. Wait until morning and reconsider.

Line-by-line annotation

Јутро је паметније од вечери.

PartFormRole
јутроnominative singular, neutersubject: “morning”
је3rd-person singular present clitic of битиcopula: “is”
паметнијеcomparative adjective, neuter singular nominativepredicate: “wiser / smarter”
одpreposition governing the genitiveintroduces the standard of comparison: “than”
вечериgenitive singular of neuter вечеthe entity against which morning is compared

The line is not missing an article: Serbian has no equivalents of English the in “the morning” and “the evening.” Nor is it a literal claim that part of the day possesses intelligence. The personification makes a piece of practical advice memorable.

Neuter comparative agreement

The dictionary adjective is паметан “intelligent, sensible.” Its comparative forms are паметнији (masculine), паметнија (feminine), and паметније (neuter). Because јутро is neuter singular, the predicate adjective must be паметније.

Ово решење је паметније од првог предлога.

This solution is more sensible than the first proposal.

Њена нова одлука је паметнија од претходне.

Her new decision is more sensible than the previous one.

English wiser never changes for gender. Serbian comparatives remain adjectives and therefore agree with the noun they describe. The full paradigm and formation patterns are on the comparative adjectives page.

💡
Do not read final -е in паметније as an adverbial ending here. It is the neuter singular adjective form selected by јутро.

Од + genitive means “than”

Serbian commonly compares two noun phrases with comparative + од + genitive. The preposition од is also used for meanings such as “from,” but after a comparative it introduces the comparison standard. In the proverb, nominative вече appears as genitive вечери.

Мирна ноћ је кориснија од непроспаване вечери.

A peaceful night is more beneficial than a sleepless evening.

Разговор уживо био је краћи од јучерашње преписке.

The face-to-face conversation was shorter than yesterday’s message exchange.

The ending in вечери is worth learning with the noun: standard Serbian вече is neuter, but its oblique singular forms do not follow the most transparent село—села pattern. Here the case is fixed by од, whatever the noun’s gender.

Serbian can also compare with него, especially before a clause or when parallel case forms are clearer. The proverb’s compact noun-to-noun comparison naturally uses од + genitive. See the decision guide on него versus од.

Why је comes after јутро

The short present form је is a clitic: it cannot normally carry sentence stress and seeks second position. The first constituent here is the one-word subject јутро, so је follows it immediately.

После сна је и тежак разговор обично лакши.

After some sleep, even a difficult conversation is usually easier.

In that sentence the first constituent is the whole phrase после сна, so је follows the phrase, not necessarily the first written word. In the fixed proverb, changing the order to imitate English disrupts both ordinary clitic placement and the memorized rhythm.

Сутра је одлука често јаснија него касно увече.

Tomorrow the decision is often clearer than it is late at night.

For the general rule, see second-position clitics. The proverb is especially easy because a single subject word provides the clitic’s host.

Pragmatics and register

The proverb is neutral and conversational, though visibly proverbial. A friend, parent, or colleague can use it to recommend postponement without directly commanding Немој сада да одлучиш “Don’t decide now.” That indirectness may sound reassuring. Used after someone has already made an urgent decision, however, it can sound smug or dismissive.

— Да ли да вечерас прихватим понуду? — Не жури; јутро је паметније од вечери.

— Should I accept the offer tonight? — Don’t rush; sleep on it.

Била је спремна да пошаље љут мејл, али је решила да сачека: јутро је паметније од вечери.

She was ready to send an angry email, but decided to wait: things look clearer in the morning.

Рок истиче за десет минута, па нам сада „Јутро је паметније од вечери“ не помаже.

The deadline expires in ten minutes, so ‘Sleep on it’ is no help to us now.

The last example shows the pragmatic limit: the saying presupposes that delay is possible. It is unsuitable advice in an immediate emergency.

The wording is widely shared across closely related standards and belongs to a broader international tradition of morning wisdom. That does not establish a single author or a uniquely Serbian historical origin. Quote it as a proverb, not as a line by a named writer unless your source identifies one.

💡
Translate the advice, not merely the personification. In most conversations, English “Sleep on it” conveys the Serbian proverb better than the literal “Morning is smarter than evening.”

Reusing the passage

Task 1: change the subject and repair agreement

Replace neuter јутро with feminine пауза “break.” The comparative must also become feminine.

Кратка пауза је паметнија од исхитреног одговора.

A short pause is wiser than a hasty reply.

Task 2: recover the dictionary forms

Identify the forms in од вечери: од requires the genitive; вечери comes from nominative вече.

Облик вечери у пословици није множина, него генитив једнине именице вече.

The form вечери in the proverb is not plural but the genitive singular of the noun вече.

Task 3: choose an idiomatic translation

In advice about postponing a choice, translate the whole saying as “Sleep on it,” not as an assertion about intelligent mornings.

Оставимо коначну одлуку за сутра — јутро је паметније од вечери.

Let’s leave the final decision until tomorrow—sleep on it.

Common Mistakes

❌ Јутро је паметнији од вечери.

Incorrect agreement—јутро is neuter, so the comparative must be паметније, not masculine паметнији.

✅ У правилном облику кажемо: „Јутро је паметније од вечери.“

In the correct form we say: ‘Morning is wiser than evening.’

❌ Јутро је паметније од вече.

Incorrect case—од governs the genitive, so вече must become вечери.

✅ После предлога од у овом поређењу стоји генитив: од вечери.

After the preposition од, this comparison uses the genitive: од вечери.

❌ Јутро паметније је од вечери.

Unnatural neutral order—the clitic је belongs after the first constituent јутро in the fixed proverb.

✅ Кад цитирамо изреку, не мењамо ред речи: „Јутро је паметније од вечери.“

When quoting the saying, we do not change its word order: ‘Sleep on it.’

❌ Сачекај до јутра, јер је јутро буквално интелигентније.

Wrong interpretation—the proverb personifies times of day to advise reflection after sleep.

✅ Сачекај да се одмориш, па онда донеси одлуку.

Wait until you have rested, and then make the decision.

Key Takeaways

  • Паметније is neuter singular because it agrees with јутро.
  • Comparison with од requires the genitive: од вечери.
  • Clitic је naturally follows the first constituent, јутро.
  • Idiomatically, the proverb means “Sleep on it” or “Things will look clearer in the morning.”
  • It offers calm advice only when postponement is genuinely possible.
