Reading Pre-Reform Serbian Orthography

Older Cyrillic is not a substitution puzzle in which every unfamiliar character has one modern replacement. A responsible reading separates at least three layers: what the artifact prints, a conservative letter-level normalization, and an idiomatic modern paraphrase. This page applies that method to the title page of Njegoš's 1847 Gorski vijenac.

Artifact and source

The source is the first edition held in the National Library of Serbia's digital collection: Petar II Petrović Njegoš, Горскій віенацъ, Vienna, 1847. A searchable public-domain diplomatic transcription is also available through Project Rastko.

The following reproduces the title-page wording and capitalization as a diplomatic Unicode transcription. Line breaks are preserved; it is not modern Serbian spelling.

ГОРСКІЙ ВІЕНАЦЪ\ ИСТОРИЧЕСКО СОБЫТІЄ\ ПРИ\ СВРШЕТКУ XVII ВІЕКА.\ СОЧИНЕНІЄ\ П. П. Н.\ ВЛАДЫКЕ ЦРНОГОСКОГА.\ У БЕЧУ,\ СЛОВИМА Ч. О. О. МЕХИТАРИСТА\ 1847.

The artifact itself prints ЦРНОГОСКОГА, evidently omitting the second р expected in црногорскога. The diplomatic block preserves that reading; analytic prose below marks or explains the editorial restoration instead of hiding it. It also preserves the title page's spaces inside П. П. Н. and Ч. О. О., its period after ЦРНОГОСКОГА, and the absence of a period after XVII.

This is civil printing at a transitional nineteenth-century moment. It contains historical letter choices and Slavonic lexical/morphological layers, but it should not be labeled wholesale “Church Slavonic,” nor treated as a spelling system learners should reproduce.

Three layers, kept separate

LayerTextWhat has changed
ArtifactГОРСКІЙ ВІЕНАЦЪ / ИСТОРИЧЕСКО СОБЫТІЄ / ПРИ СВРШЕТКУ XVII ВІЕКА.Nothing; this is the title-page reading.
Conservative normalizationГорски вијенац / Историческо собитије / при свршетку XVII вијека.Letters and word-final hard signs are normalized; historical words remain.
Modern Ekavian paraphraseГорски вијенац: историјски догађај с краја XVII века.Lexicon, syntax, morphology, and variety are modernized.

The middle layer is deliberately strange. Историческо собитије is not recommended modern phrasing; it proves that graphemic normalization alone does not equal translation. The last layer chooses an Ekavian baseline and therefore labels вијека → века as a variety change, not a spelling correction.

Горски вијенац — историјски догађај с краја седамнаестог века.

The Mountain Wreath—a historical event from the end of the seventeenth century.

That is an idiomatic modern paraphrase of the title-page description, not a quotation from 1847.

Character inventory

Historical formLikely modern reading hereEvidence in the excerpt
І / іи or part of modern ј/ије spelling, depending on contextГОРСКІЙ, ВІЕНАЦЪ, ВІЕКА
Й / йј or the modern adjective spelling without a separate equivalentГОРСКІЙ → горски
Ы / ыиСОБЫТІЄ → собитије; ВЛАДЫКЕ → владике
Є / єје in these positionsСОБЫТІЄ, СОЧИНЕНІЄ
Ъ / ъno sound at word end here; deleted in normalizationВІЕНАЦЪ → вијенац

There is no safe universal command “replace і with и.” In віенацъ the sequence represents a form read вијенац, while in историческо it gives simple и. A reader needs phonology, morphology, and sometimes an edition's editorial apparatus.

ВІЕНАЦЪ → вијенац

Historical spelling to modern-letter Ijekavian form: wreath.

ВІЕКА → вијека

Historical spelling to modern-letter Ijekavian genitive: of the century.

СОБЫТІЄ → собитије

Conservative letter-level normalization: event/occurrence; the historical lexical form is retained.

These arrows are analytical mappings, not ordinary Serbian sentences. They are included in GrammarExample blocks so the target forms remain visually exact.

💡
Normalize the smallest possible layer first. If you silently replace an old word with a modern synonym, you can no longer tell whether the difficulty was a letter, an ending, or the lexicon.

Graphemic, morphological, lexical, and dialect changes

Four types of editorial intervention occur in the modern paraphrase:

  1. Graphemic: delete final ъ, replace obsolete letters, and supply modern ј: віенацъ → вијенац.
  2. Variant/morphological choice: црногорскога → црногорског selects the shorter genitive adjective variant. Both -ога and -ог are standard today; rhythm, euphony, emphasis, and style can favor the longer form, so shortening it is not an obligatory “modernization.”
  3. Lexical: историческо собитије → историјски догађај and сочиненије → дело replace historical Slavonic-layer words.
  4. Dialect/standard variety: вијека → века changes Ijekavian to Ekavian. A modern Ijekavian paraphrase would retain вијека.

Ијекавска парафраза: Историјски догађај с краја XVII вијека.

Ijekavian paraphrase: A historical event from the end of the seventeenth century.

Екавска парафраза: Историјски догађај с краја XVII века.

Ekavian paraphrase: A historical event from the end of the seventeenth century.

Neither is a diplomatic transcription. They make the variety choice visible. For the broader historical systems, see pre-Vuk orthographies; for standard variety correspondences, see Ekavian and Ijekavian.

Reading the remaining title page

Сочиненіє П. П. Н. literally labels the work as a “composition/work” by the initials P. P. N. The artifact's ВЛАДЫКЕ ЦРНОГОСКОГА identifies the author as the Montenegrin vladika; a conservative editorial reading is владике црного[р]скога, with the supplied letter made visible. In contemporary Serbian one might phrase this дело П. П. Њ., црногорског владике, but that paraphrase changes both abbreviation and syntax.

У Бечу is already transparent: “in Vienna.” Словима ч. о. о. мехитариста uses словима in an old printing sense, “with the type/letters of.” Idiomatic bibliographic English is “printed at the press of the Reverend Mekhitarist Fathers,” not “with the words of the Mekhitarists.” The abbreviation ч. о. о. must not be expanded confidently without edition-specific evidence; a cautious English rendering can omit the honorific while retaining the institutional identity.

Дело П. П. Њ., црногорског владике, штампано је у Бечу 1847. године.

The work by P. P. Nj., the Montenegrin prince-bishop, was printed in Vienna in 1847.

This is explanatory modern prose. It resolves the historical title page's nominal fragments into a finite sentence.

Line-by-line annotation

ГОРСКІЙ ВІЕНАЦЪTitle; adjective + masculine nominative noun, both in historical spelling.
ИСТОРИЧЕСКО СОБЫТІЄNeuter nominative apposition describing the work.
ПРИ СВРШЕТКУ XVII ВІЕКА.При
  • locative gives the historical time frame, “at/toward the end of the seventeenth century.”
СОЧИНЕНІЄ П. П. Н.Another nominal label: “a work/composition by P. P. N.”
ВЛАДЫКЕ ЦРНОГОСКОГА.Genitive apposition identifying whose initials they are; the printed ЦРНОГОСКОГА lacks the second р of expected црногорскога.

СЛОВИМА Ч. О. О. МЕХИТАРИСТАInstrumental plural словима identifies the printer/type; genitive мехитариста identifies the institution.

Књига је објављена у Бечу при крају деветнаестог века.

The book was published in Vienna toward the end of the nineteenth century.

The modern sentence demonstrates the still-productive case government; it does not reproduce the historical typography.

Reuse exercises

Task 1: classify the intervention

Classify владыке → владике, црногорскога → црногорског, and сочиненије → дело.

Here црногорскога is the explicitly emended reading of printed ЦРНОГОСКОГА, not a claim that the artifact contains the missing р.

Владыке → владике је графемска промена; црногорскога → црногорског је избор краће стандардне варијанте; сочиненије → дело је лексичка промена.

Vladyke → vladike is graphemic; crnogorskoga → crnogorskog selects the shorter standard variant; sočinenije → delo is lexical.

Task 2: preserve Ijekavian

Modernize при свршетку XVII. віека without changing standard variety.

при крају XVII вијека

toward the end of the seventeenth century

Task 3: paraphrase bibliographically

Turn the title-page fragments into one contemporary sentence.

Горски вијенац Петра II Петровића Његоша објављен је у Бечу 1847. године.

The Mountain Wreath by Petar II Petrović Njegoš was published in Vienna in 1847.

Common Mistakes

❌ Сваки знак і чита се као и.

Incorrect mechanical rule: context may require modern ј or participate in an ије sequence.

✅ Облик ВІЕНАЦЪ нормализујемо као вијенац.

We normalize the form ВІЕНАЦЪ as вијенац.

❌ Историческо собитије је неутралан савремени израз.

Incorrect register judgment: it is a conservative normalization retaining historical lexicon.

✅ У савременом тексту: историјски догађај.

In a contemporary text: historical event.

❌ ВІЕКА → века је само правописна измена.

Incorrect: this also changes Ijekavian вијека to Ekavian века.

✅ Графемска нормализација даје вијека; екавска адаптација даје века.

Graphemic normalization gives вијека; an Ekavian adaptation gives века.

❌ Завршно ъ треба писати у савременом српском.

Incorrect: final ъ belongs to the historical orthography and is absent from modern Serbian.

✅ Данас пишемо вијенац, без завршног ъ.

Today we write вијенац, without final ъ.

💡
Never “clean up” a quotation invisibly. Put the diplomatic original, normalization, and paraphrase in separately labeled blocks so another reader can reproduce every editorial decision.

Key Takeaways

  • Keep artifact, conservative normalization, and modern paraphrase as three separately labeled layers.
  • Obsolete і, й, ы, є, ъ require contextual reading; there is no universal one-character substitution recipe.
  • Distinguish graphemic, explicit editorial, standard-variant, lexical, and Ekavian–Ijekavian changes.
  • The title page is transitional civil print, not a productive modern spelling system and not wholesale Church Slavonic.
