Njegoš's Gorski vijenac demands two readings at once: a grammatical reading of Ijekavian, vocatives, ellipsis, and marked inflection, and a dramatic reading of who is speaking within the work. The seven lines below form a complete image in the final Коло: ancestral souls appear over Cetinje like white swans. They are a chorus's culturally situated vision, not neutral documentary prose.
Passage, edition, and translation
The passage is lines 2632–2638 in „Горски вијенац“. The modern-Cyrillic reading follows the public-domain text at Project Rastko; the 1847 spelling can be checked against the National Library of Serbia facsimile. This is a normalized-letter transcription, not a claim that the first printing used today's alphabet.
Боже драги, свјетла празника!\ Како су се душе прађедовске\ над Цетињем данас узвијале!\ Играју се на бјела јата,\ како јата дивних лабудовах,\ кад се небом ведријем играју\ над образом свијетла језера.
An idiomatic translation:
Dear God—what a radiant feast day!\ How the souls of the forefathers\ have risen and circled over Cetinje today!\ They play in white flocks,\ like flocks of splendid swans\ when they play across a clear sky\ above the face of a shining lake.
Играју се is “move/play” poetically, not “play a game.” Образ језера personifies the lake's surface as a face. A literal “on the face” would be grammatical English but would miss the image.
Line-by-line grammar
| Line | Reading |
|---|---|
| Боже драги | Боже is vocative of Бог; agreeing драги addresses God directly. |
| свјетла празника | An exclamatory genitive: literally something like “of a radiant feast day,” idiomatically “what a radiant feast day!” |
| душе прађедовске | Postposed adjective is poetic and foregrounds душе; neutral prose prefers прађедовске душе. |
| над Цетињем | Над
|
| на бјела јата | A marked poetic grouping expression, “in/as white flocks”; it should not be copied as a general prose formula. |
| лабудовах | Older genitive plural in -ах; contemporary standard Serbian has лабудова. |
| небом ведријем | Instrumental pathway with older/poetic adjective ending; modern prose has ведрим небом. |
| над образом свијетла језера | Образ “face” metaphorically names the lake surface; свијетла језера is genitive with older short-adjective form. |
Боже драги, како се небо одједном разведрило!
Dear God, how suddenly the sky cleared!
The comma around direct address is required. In ordinary secular speech, this exclamation can sound emotionally strong; it is not a neutral filler.
Над Цетињем су се данас надвили тешки облаци.
Heavy clouds gathered over Cetinje today.
The modern sentence keeps над + instrumental, but restores ordinary perfect and word order.
Ijekavian is systematic, not ornamental
The quoted passage has historical/dialectal свјетла, бјела, while its final line has свијетла. A contemporary standard Ijekavian paraphrase uses свијетла, бијела; the Ekavian correspondences are светла, бела. Both standard varieties are Serbian, but the edition's forms must not be silently regularized inside quotation. Njegoš's historical Montenegrin/Ijekavian language also contains forms that are not explained merely by swapping ије/је for е.
Ијекавски: Бијели лабудови лете над свијетлим језером.
Ijekavian: White swans are flying above a bright lake.
Екавски: Бели лабудови лете над светлим језером.
Ekavian: White swans are flying above a bright lake.
The pair changes бијели/бели and свијетлим/светлим consistently. The Ekavian–Ijekavian guide explains the productive correspondences; it does not license replacing historical endings such as -ах by dialect conversion.
Vocative and exclamatory genitive
Боже драги is syntactically independent address. The following свјетла празника! lacks a finite verb and stands in genitive, a traditional exclamatory pattern expressing wonder. English normally supplies what a…. Expanding it as a statement changes the rhetoric:
Данас је свијетао празник.
Today is a radiant feast day.
That is grammatically explicit but loses invocation and astonishment. A modern exclamation can preserve the force without imitating the old genitive:
Какав свијетао празник!
What a radiant feast day!

Aspect and the moving vision
The perfect су се … узвијале locates the appearance in relation to данас, while imperfective morphology presents movement as unfolding rather than as a single bounded arrival. Present играју се then shifts the vision before the audience's eyes. This historical-present-like immediacy makes the souls seem visible now.
Душе су се над градом узвијале, а сада се пред нама играју као јата птица.
The souls rose and circled above the city, and now they move before us like flocks of birds.
Лабудови се играју на води док се облаци огледају у језеру.
The swans move playfully on the water while the clouds are reflected in the lake.
English translations may repeat “play,” but Serbian играти се here activates visual motion and vitality rather than a children's activity.
Poetic order and cultural frame
Neutral noun phrases normally put the descriptive adjective first: прађедовске душе, дивни лабудови, свијетло језеро. Njegoš postpones adjectives to sustain meter, parallelism, and elevation. He also leaves relations implicit: the reader must connect white flocks to ancestral souls and the lake's “face” to its visible surface.
The passage belongs to the chorus near the end of a dramatic poem tied to Montenegrin political, religious, and epic traditions. Празник and the invocation of God give the vision a sacred frame; Cetinje locates it in a specific cultural landscape. Interpretation should report that dramatic framing without treating the chorus as an ethnographic fact or extracting the lines as a contemporary political slogan.
Прађедовске душе се у визији појављују над Цетињем као јата лабудова.
In the vision, the forefathers' souls appear above Cetinje like flocks of swans.
That prose paraphrase makes the comparison and its status explicit. It is not a quotation.
Reuse exercises
Task 1: modernize morphology, not variety
Keep Ijekavian but replace older forms and marked order.
Јата дивних лабудова играју се под ведрим небом над површином свијетлог језера.
Flocks of splendid swans move under a clear sky above the surface of a bright lake.
Task 2: convert variety consistently
Give the same sentence in Ekavian.
Јата дивних лабудова играју се под ведрим небом над површином светлог језера.
Flocks of splendid swans move under a clear sky above the surface of a bright lake.
Task 3: restore an elliptical exclamation
Turn свјетла празника! into neutral contemporary Ijekavian.
Какав свијетао празник!
What a radiant feast day!
Common Mistakes
❌ Боже драги је номинатив јер је Бог субјекат.
Incorrect: Боже is vocative direct address and is not the clause's subject.
✅ Боже драги, чуј нашу молитву.
Dear God, hear our prayer.
❌ над Цетиње
Incorrect for static location: над takes instrumental here.
✅ над Цетињем
above Cetinje
❌ Лабудовах је редован савремени ијекавски генитив множине.
Incorrect: the regular contemporary form in both standard varieties is лабудова.
✅ Видели смо јато белих лабудова.
We saw a flock of white swans.
❌ Бијели лабудови лете над светлим језером.
Inconsistent neutral variety: this mixes Ijekavian бијели with Ekavian светлим.
✅ Бијели лабудови лете над свијетлим језером.
White swans are flying above a bright lake.
