Jovan Jovanović Zmaj's Pačija škola (The Duck School) sounds effortless because its grammar serves its rhythm. The extract below moves between an adult storyteller's aside, a nursery-world diminutive, and forms shortened to fit the verse. Read the contractions as deliberate poetic and conversational coloring, not as a spelling model for neutral prose.
Text and source
This is the opening of „Пачија школа“, reproduced from the public-domain text at Serbian Wikisource. The wording and apostrophes are retained; quotation punctuation is regularized to the contemporary Serbian convention „…“.
Јесте л' чули, кумо,\ Верујте, без шале —\ Отвара се школа\ За пачиће мале.\
Тако је и било,\ Верујте, без шале —\ Отворила се школа\ За пачиће мале.\
Сви пачићи дошли,\ На скамијам' стоје;\ Стари патак метно\ Наочаре своје.
An idiomatic translation is:
Have you heard, dear neighbor?\ Believe me, I'm not joking:\ a school is opening\ for little ducklings.\
And so it really happened—\ believe me, I'm not joking:\ a school opened\ for little ducklings.\
All the ducklings arrived\ and are standing on their school benches;\ the old drake put on\ his spectacles.
The translation supplies and in the third stanza and renders кумо pragmatically. English kinship words do not capture its familiar address value here.
Line-by-line grammar
| Text | What carries the meaning |
|---|---|
| Јесте л' чули, кумо | Јесте ли чули? is the polite/plural perfect question; л' is metrical shortening. Кумо is vocative. |
| Верујте, без шале | The polite/plural imperative addresses the listener directly; без governs genitive шале. |
| Отвара се школа | Imperfective present presents an unfolding opening; се makes the event subject-centered, “the school is opening.” |
| За пачиће мале | За with accusative marks intended beneficiaries. The postposed adjective preserves rhyme and focus. |
| Отворила се школа | Perfective отворити се reports the completed result; feminine отворила agrees with школа. |
| Сви пачићи дошли | The auxiliary су is omitted in compressed verse: prose has Сви пачићи су дошли. |
| На скамијам' стоје | Скамија “school bench” is dated; скамијам' truncates locative plural скамијама. |
| Стари патак метно / Наочаре своје | Метно is a colloquial/metrical contraction of метнуо. Своје refers back to the subject, the drake. |
Јесте ли чули да се отвара нова школа?
Have you heard that a new school is opening?
That is the neutral prose form. In a singular informal question it becomes Јеси ли чуо? or Јеси ли чула?, depending on the addressee.
Кумо, верујте ми — не шалим се.
My dear neighbor, believe me—I'm not joking.
The vocative does not identify the grammatical subject; it opens a channel to the listener. See the full vocative usage guide.
Diminutives and ordinary inflection
Пачић is derived from патка and names a duckling; plural пачићи is not merely “small ducks” but the normal young-animal word. Zmaj exploits its affectionate sound in a child-directed poem. Its endings are nevertheless ordinary masculine animate endings: nominative plural пачићи, accusative plural пачиће.
Сви пачићи су дошли на време.
All the ducklings arrived on time.
Учитељ је позвао мале пачиће у учионицу.
The teacher called the little ducklings into the classroom.
The adjective moves after the noun in пачиће мале for rhyme and cadence. Neutral speech normally prefers за мале пачиће. Both forms agree in masculine animate accusative plural; the difference is information structure, not case.
Aspect makes the miniature story move
The first stanza announces a process: отвара се школа. The second confirms the accomplished event: отворила се школа. English may use “is opening / opened,” but Serbian makes the internal viewpoint especially visible through the imperfective–perfective contrast.
Школа се отвара у понедељак, а упис је већ почео.
The school opens on Monday, and enrollment has already begun.
Школа се отворила чим су стигли сви ученици.
The school opened as soon as all the pupils arrived.
The auxiliary-less Сви пачићи дошли is readily recoverable in verse and lively storytelling. It is not the default model for a neutral written perfect.
Сви ученици су дошли, па је час почео.
All the pupils arrived, so the lesson began.
Voice, rhythm, and register
The repeated Верујте, без шале imitates an oral storyteller assuring an audience that an absurd report is true. The polite/plural imperative can address one respected person or several people. Meanwhile кумо creates intimacy. That blend—familiar vocative plus ceremonious верујте—is comic rather than contradictory.
The four-beat movement depends on omission and compression: ли → л', скамијама → скамијам', метнуо → метно, and omission of су. Contemporary speakers may hear some of these in conversation, but their accumulation is (literary) and rhythm-driven. A modern paraphrase should restore them:
Сви пачићи су дошли и стоје на скамијама; стари патак је метнуо наочаре.
All the ducklings arrived and are standing on the benches; the old drake put on his glasses.
Скамија is now (dated/literary); everyday Serbian would usually say школска клупа. Метнути remains intelligible, while ставити is more neutral in this context.
Стари наставник је ставио своје наочаре и отворио дневник.
The old teacher put on his glasses and opened the register.
Reuse the passage
Task 1: restore neutral prose
Expand the contractions and missing auxiliary in Јесте л' чули… Сви пачићи дошли, на скамијам' стоје.
Јесте ли чули? Сви пачићи су дошли и стоје на скамијама.
Have you heard? All the ducklings arrived and are standing on the benches.
Task 2: keep the aspectual contrast
Announce a café opening, then report that it opened.
Отвара се нови кафић у крају; јуче се коначно отворио.
A new café is opening in the neighborhood; yesterday it finally opened.
Task 3: preserve reflexive possession
Replace the drake with a female teacher and make all agreement changes.
Стара наставница је ставила своје наочаре.
The old female teacher put on her glasses.
Common Mistakes
❌ Јесте ли чуо, кум?
Incorrect agreement and address: polite jeste li requires the plural l-participle, and direct address requires the vocative.
✅ Јесте ли чули, куме?
Have you heard, my friend?
❌ Сви пачићи дошли је неутрална писана реченица.
Incorrect register judgment: the missing auxiliary is poetic or narratively compressed here.
✅ У неутралној прози: „Сви пачићи су дошли.“
In neutral prose: ‘All the ducklings arrived.’
❌ Школа је отварала јуче.
Incorrect for a completed opening; the imperfective suggests repeated or attempted activity, not the achieved result.
✅ Школа се отворила јуче.
The school opened yesterday.
❌ Стари патак је ставио његове наочаре.
Wrong if the spectacles belong to the drake; његове normally points to another male referent.
✅ Стари патак је ставио своје наочаре.
The old drake put on his own spectacles.
Key Takeaways
- Л', скамијам', and метно are rhythmic contractions; neutral prose restores ли, скамијама, and метнуо.
- Пачићи / пачиће shows ordinary animate plural case morphology inside a playful diminutive.
- Отвара се / отворила се moves from an unfolding event to its completed result.
- Кумо is vocative, while polite/plural верујте addresses the listener directly.
