In a Serbian clothes shop, a single item changes grammatical shape as it moves through the conversation: она зелена хаљина becomes accusative ону зелену хаљину, then short object је once both speakers know which dress they mean. This original exchange also shows polite Ви, size and color phrases, adjective agreement, trying clothes on, and comparative judgments.
Text status: This is an original instructional dialogue in contemporary standard Serbian. The assistant and customer do not know each other, so they consistently use polite singular Ви.
The complete dialogue
Купац:
Добар дан. Могу ли да пробам ону зелену хаљину из излога?
Good afternoon. May I try on that green dress from the window display?
Продавачица:
Наравно. Коју величину носите?
Of course. What size do you wear?
Купац:
Најчешће носим 38, али зависи од кроја.
I usually wear a size 38, but it depends on the cut.
Продавачица:
Имамо је у величинама 38 и 40. Донећу Вам обе.
We have it in sizes 38 and 40. I'll bring you both.
Купац:
Хвала. Где су кабине?
Thank you. Where are the fitting rooms?
Продавачица:
На крају пролаза, лево. Пробајте прво мању.
At the end of the aisle, on the left. Try the smaller one first.
Купац:
Уска ми је преко рамена, а рукави су ми кратки.
It's tight across the shoulders, and the sleeves are too short for me.
Продавачица:
Пробајте онда већу. Имамо исти модел и у тамноплавој боји.
Then try the larger one. We also have the same style in dark blue.
Купац:
Ова ми много боље стоји. Могу ли да видим тамноплаву?
This one suits me much better. May I see the dark-blue one?
Продавачица:
Наравно. Ако Вам одговара, на тај модел данас имамо попуст од двадесет одсто.
Of course. If it works for you, that style is twenty percent off today.
Купац:
Узећу плаву. Да ли могу да платим картицом?
I'll take the blue one. Can I pay by card?
English repeatedly inserts one—“the smaller one,” “the dark-blue one”—where Serbian lets an agreeing adjective stand for the understood feminine noun хаљина. The translation also renders уска ми је idiomatically as “it's tight” rather than the word-for-word “narrow is to me.”
Line-by-line annotation
| Line | Grammar | Discourse work |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Accusative feminine ону зелену хаљину is the direct object of пробам. Ону points to an item at some distance, here in the window. | The greeting and могу ли frame the request politely without over-apologizing. |
| 2 | Accusative коју величину is the object of носите. The -те form is polite singular in this setting. | The assistant narrows the request to the information needed to act on it. |
| 3 | The numeral label 38 is read тридесет осам. Зависити од governs genitive, hence од кроја. | Најчешће avoids presenting a nominal size as an absolute fit. |
| 4 | Accusative clitic је resumes хаљину. Обе agrees with two understood feminine options. Dative Вам marks the recipient. | Repeating “the dress” or “the two sizes” would be grammatical but unnecessarily heavy. |
| 5 | Plural кабине triggers plural су. The fuller term is кабине за пресвлачење, but the context licenses the short form. | The customer changes from selecting an item to navigating the shop. |
| 6 | На крају takes genitive пролаза. Polite imperative пробајте takes substantivized accusative мању, meaning мању хаљину / мању величину. | The assistant gives directions and establishes which of the two sizes the customer tries first; the next turn reports the result. |
| 7 | Predicate adjective уска agrees with the omitted dress. Dative ми marks whose fit is judged. Plural рукави су ... кратки has its own subject and agreement. | Two precise fit problems are more useful than a bare “no.” |
| 8 | Polite imperative пробајте takes substantivized accusative већу. У тамноплавој боји uses locative after static у. | Онда presents the larger size as the consequence of the fit report. |
| 9 | Demonstrative ова is nominative because it is the subject of стоји. Dative ми identifies the wearer; боље is the comparative adverb. | The omitted noun remains easy to recover, while тамноплаву introduces a new color option. |
| 10 | Попуст од двадесет одсто uses од to quantify the discount. The conditional clause uses present after ако. | The discount is given as relevant information, not as pressure disguised as grammar. |
| 11 | Future узећу takes substantivized accusative плаву. Instrumental картицом marks the means of payment. | The customer makes a final choice and moves naturally to payment. |
Following one item through the cases
English articles and the word one do much of the reference work. Serbian uses case, gender, and short pronouns:
| Role | Form | Why |
|---|---|---|
| item identified | она зелена хаљина | nominative feminine |
| item tried | ону зелену хаљину | accusative direct object |
| known item resumed | пробам је | feminine accusative clitic |
| color option chosen | узећу плаву | accusative adjective with omitted noun |
Покажите ми онај беж капут, па ћу пробати и овај црни.
Show me that beige coat, and then I'll try this black one too.
Masculine онај капут becomes accusative онај капут because it is inanimate; овај црни is also accusative but has the same form as nominative. The endings differ from the transparent feminine set, so rely on the entire noun phrase rather than the demonstrative alone. Review demonstratives and direct objects separately.
Fit, appearance, and size are different judgments
Одговарати некоме says that a size or option is suitable. Стајати некоме evaluates how clothing looks on someone. Бити узак/широк/кратак/дугачак describes the physical fit. All three normally put the wearer in the dative.
Број ми одговара, али ми се боја не допада.
The size works for me, but I don't like the color.
Те панталоне Вам одлично стоје, али су Вам предуге.
Those trousers look excellent on you, but they're too long for you. (polite singular or plural)
In the second example панталоне is a plural-only noun, so both стоје and су ... предуге are plural. English “a pair” can hide that agreement.
Polite address and capitalization
The page capitalizes Вам because one specific customer is addressed politely. Lowercase вам is also common in many ordinary exchanges; capitalization is a courtesy convention, not a different pronoun. What must remain consistent is the grammar: носите, пробајте, можете all match Ви.
In a market stall or a shop where staff and customer know one another, familiar ти may be mutually appropriate. Do not switch solely because the conversation becomes friendly.
Reuse the passage
Task 1: Change the garment
Replace хаљина with masculine џемпер and then plural панталоне. Change every demonstrative, adjective, pronoun, predicate, and verb agreement that depends on the noun.
Task 2: Report three fit judgments
Say that the first item is too wide, the sleeves are long, and the second size suits you better. Use ми, one agreeing adjective, and comparative боље.
Task 3: Change the level of address
Imagine the customer and assistant know each other. Convert носите, Вам, пробајте, можете to consistent familiar singular forms without changing the objects' cases.
Common Mistakes
Leaving the object in the nominative
❌ Могу ли да пробам она зелена хаљина?
Incorrect—the item being tried is a direct object and must be accusative.
✅ Могу ли да пробам ону зелену хаљину са кратким рукавима?
May I try on that green dress with short sleeves?
Making the wearer the nominative subject of стојати
❌ Ја добро стојим ову кошуљу.
Incorrect—the garment is the subject and the wearer is dative.
✅ Ова кошуља ми добро стоји, али ми крагна смета.
This shirt suits me, but the collar bothers me.
Losing agreement when the noun is omitted
❌ Пробала сам црвену сукњу, али ћу узети плави.
Incorrect—the omitted noun сукња is feminine, so the standalone adjective must be плаву.
✅ Пробала сам црвену сукњу, али ћу узети плаву са џеповима.
I tried on the red skirt, but I'll take the blue one with pockets.
Mixing polite and familiar address
❌ Коју величину носиш и да ли Вам ова одговара?
Incorrect in one-customer dialogue—носиш is familiar while Вам is polite.
✅ Коју величину носите и да ли Вам овај крој одговара?
What size do you wear, and does this cut work for you? (polite singular)
Key Takeaways
- Demonstratives, adjectives, and nouns agree through case: она зелена хаљина → ону зелену хаљину.
- Once an item is active, је or a standalone agreeing adjective can replace the full noun phrase.
- Fit and appearance put the wearer in the dative: ми одговара, ми стоји, уска ми је.
- Polite Ви affects pronouns, verbs, and imperatives throughout the exchange.
