The Serbian term непостојано а literally means “nonpersistent a.” The vowel appears in some forms of a word and disappears in others: момак → момка, добар → добра, but момака in the genitive plural. The spelling follows the form actually pronounced; Serbian does not keep a silent а merely to make the stem look stable.
This page concentrates on writing the alternation; the fleeting a across the case system gives the fuller declensional analysis.
English speakers are used to a written base remaining visually recognizable even when pronunciation changes. Serbian works differently here. Removing а can expose a consonant cluster, while inserting it can repair a cluster that would otherwise be difficult or disallowed in a particular form.
The basic alternation in masculine nouns
Many masculine nouns ending in a consonant have а between the final consonants of the nominative singular, then lose it before a vowel-initial case ending.
| Nominative singular | Genitive singular | Nominative plural | Genitive plural |
|---|---|---|---|
| момак / momak | момка / momka | момци / momci | момака / momaka |
| пас / pas | пса / psa | пси / psi | паса / pasa |
| ветар / vetar | ветра / vetra | ветрови / vetrovi | ветрова / vetrova |
| писац / pisac | писца / pisca | писци / pisci | писаца / pisaca |
| пројекат / projekat | пројекта / projekta | пројекти / projekti | пројеката / projekata |
Овај момак чека пса испред продавнице.
This young man is waiting for the dog outside the shop.
Не сећам се имена тог момка.
I don’t remember that young man’s name.
После два месеца коначно смо завршили пројекат.
After two months, we finally finished the project.
Рок тог пројекта померен је за петак.
The deadline for that project was moved to Friday.
The ending triggers the alternation, but do not reduce the rule to “delete every а before an ending.” In јунак → јунака, the а belongs stably to the stem and remains. The useful clue is a known cluster-bearing form such as момка or пројекта, not the presence of а by itself.
Adjectives and other agreeing words
The same alternation appears in masculine adjective and determiner forms. The masculine nominative singular may contain а, while feminine and neuter forms expose the consonant cluster.
| Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| добар | добра | добро | good |
| кратак | кратка | кратко | short |
| снажан | снажна | снажно | strong |
| један | једна | једно | one |
| сав | сва | све | all; whole |
Филм је добар, али је књига још боља.
The film is good, but the book is even better.
Имамо само један слободан сто и једну слободну столицу.
We have only one free table and one free chair.
Сав хлеб је нестао, а сва пецива су остала.
All the bread is gone, while all the pastries are left.
Agreement makes the alternation visible. English good does not change for gender, but Serbian добар must become добра with a feminine noun. Writing добара књига preserves the masculine vowel where the grammar does not license it.
The vowel can appear in the genitive plural
The label “fleeting” is more accurate than “deleted from the nominative,” because а can also appear in the genitive plural even when the nominative has none. It separates consonants and helps form a recognizable plural stem.
| Nominative singular | Genitive plural | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| девојка / devojka | девојака / devojaka | girl |
| сестра / sestra | сестара / sestara | sister |
| земља / zemlja | земаља / zemalja | country |
| писмо / pismo | писама / pisama | letter |
| ребро / rebro | ребара / rebara | rib |
На радионици је било пет девојака из различитих земаља.
There were five girls from different countries at the workshop.
После толико писама, коначно су се срели уживо.
After so many letters, they finally met in person.
Ниједна од мојих сестара не живи у Београду.
None of my sisters lives in Belgrade.
The cluster helps predict where а is useful, but it does not eliminate memorization. Serbian morphology permits some clusters and repairs others, and individual nouns may have additional stem changes. Use the genitive plural supplied by a reliable dictionary rather than inventing it from the nominative.
Spelling follows sound, but morphology chooses the form
The slogan “write as you speak” is helpful only after grammar has supplied the right case, gender, and number. In са псом, the instrumental form requires псом; hearing the cluster then tells you not to write пасом. In пет паса, the genitive plural requires паса, so the vowel returns.
Сваког јутра трчим са псом поред реке.
Every morning I run with the dog beside the river.
У азилу тренутно има двадесет паса.
There are currently twenty dogs at the shelter.
Related words can behave differently, so compare complete sets rather than assuming one fixed stem:
- сан — сна — снови — снова (“dream”)
- ветар — ветра — ветрови — ветрова (“wind”)
- писац — писца — писци — писаца (“writer”)
- кратак — кратка — кратко — кратки (“short”)
Dictation and proofreading task
In dictation, listen for the cluster, then identify the grammatical form. The phrase са добрим писцем contains no а in either добрим or писцем; рад доброг писца likewise uses доброг писца. By contrast, дела добрих писаца restores а in the noun’s genitive plural.
Proofread this Latin-script note: Jedan dobar pisac razgovara sa pet mladih pisca o novom projektu. The quantity пет requires genitive plural писаца, not genitive singular писца.
❌ Један добар писац разговара са пет младих писца о новом пројекту.
Incorrect — after пет, the noun must be genitive plural писаца, with fleeting а restored.
✅ Један добар писац разговара са пет младих писаца о новом пројекту. — Jedan dobar pisac razgovara sa pet mladih pisaca o novom projektu.
One good writer is talking with five young writers about the new project.
When converting scripts, preserve the ordinary one-to-one correspondences: писаца ↔ pisaca, девојака ↔ devojaka, земља ↔ zemlja. Do not turn lj into separate sounds or strip č/ć/š/ž/đ elsewhere in the sentence.
Common Mistakes
Keeping а in an oblique singular form
❌ Чекам мог момака испред биоскопа.
Incorrect — момака is genitive plural; animate accusative singular is момка.
✅ Чекам мог момка испред биоскопа.
I’m waiting for my boyfriend outside the cinema.
Deleting а from the dictionary form
❌ Овај проекта је коначно одобрен.
Incorrect — проекта is an oblique form; this nominative singular requires пројекат.
✅ Овај пројекат је коначно одобрен.
This project has finally been approved.
Preserving the masculine adjective vowel before a feminine noun
❌ То је добара и кратка анализа.
Incorrect — feminine agreement requires добра; the а in добар is fleeting.
✅ То је добра и кратка анализа.
That is a good, short analysis.
Omitting the vowel in a genitive plural
❌ Стигли су одговори из пет земљи.
Incorrect — after пет, земља has genitive plural земаља.
✅ Стигли су одговори из пет земаља.
Replies arrived from five countries.
Letting ASCII obscure a different spelling error
❌ Pet devojka čeka mladog pisca.
Incorrect — the Latin diacritic is present, but пет still requires genitive plural devojaka.
✅ Пет девојака чека младог писца. — Pet devojaka čeka mladog pisca.
Five girls are waiting for the young writer.
Key Takeaways
- Learn alternating sets such as момак — момка — момака, not isolated headwords.
- Masculine добар, кратак, један lose the fleeting vowel in forms such as добра, кратка, једна.
- Genitive plural can restore or insert а: девојака, земаља, писама.
- Consonant clusters offer clues, but dictionary forms remain necessary because the pattern is not fully mechanical.
- Serbian spelling records the vowel actually present in the selected grammatical form.
