ke-...-an Experiencer Constructions: Choosing This Construction in Malaysian Malay

Choose an affected-experiencer ke-...-an predicate when the clause is chiefly about a participant undergoing a state, deprivation, or intrusive arrival. Saya kedinginan centers the chilled person; dia kehilangan dompet centers the person deprived of a possession; marked kami kedatangan tamu centers the hosts affected by an arrival. Nearby clauses can describe the same scene while making cold air, the missing wallet, the visitor, or an intentional actor central instead.

This page focuses only on discourse choice. The series overview covers formation, while the other three pages handle participant diagnostics, particle order, and advanced relative/register constraints. A separate guide maps the broader voice decision system.

Three perspectives, not one English translation

Experiencer-centered clauseNearest alternativeWhat becomes central?
Saya kedinginan.Udara malam menyejukkan tubuh saya.cause acting on an affected body
Dia kehilangan dompet.Dompetnya hilang.missing theme
Dia kehilangan dompet.Dompetnya dicuri seseorang.theme affected by an agentive theft
Kami kedatangan tamu.Tetamu datang ke rumah kami.arriving visitors
Kami kedatangan tamu.Kami menerima tetamu.hosts as intentional receivers

These are not interchangeable paraphrases in every context. Dompetnya dicuri asserts theft; dia kehilangan dompet does not identify how the wallet disappeared. Kami menerima tetamu suggests active hosting, while kami kedatangan tamu can present the arrival as something that befell or reached the household.

💡
Choose the construction that preserves what you know. If you know only that someone no longer has a wallet, kehilangan avoids inventing a thief. If the theft is established and the wallet is topical, dompetnya dicuri is more informative.

Choosing kedinginan

Kedinginan profiles the experiencer as affected by cold. It works well when bodily discomfort or exposure matters and is especially natural in descriptive prose (neutral/formal/literary).

Saya kedinginan selepas baju hujan saya koyak semasa mendaki.

I was chilled after my raincoat tore during the hike.

Mangsa yang kedinginan itu segera diberikan pakaian kering.

The chilled victim was immediately given dry clothes. (formal/reporting)

Everyday Malaysian conversation frequently uses kesejukan or simple sejuk:

Saya sejuk sangat; boleh tutup penghawa dingin?

I'm really cold; can you turn off the air conditioner? (informal)

The alternatives differ in construal. Udara malam sangat dingin describes the environment. Angin menyejukkan tubuh saya makes the wind an external cause. Saya kedinginan makes my affected condition the starting point without expressing an agent.

Do not select kedinginan merely because English uses be cold. The English copular adjective can correspond to saya sejuk, saya kesejukan, or saya kedinginan, depending on intensity, register, and whether affectedness is foregrounded.

Choosing kehilangan

Predicate kehilangan is the most broadly useful member of the set. It centers an animate person, household, organization, team, or community deprived of something valued or expected.

Dia kehilangan dompet semasa bersesak-sesak di pintu masuk stadium.

He lost his wallet in the crowd at the stadium entrance.

Kampung itu kehilangan satu-satunya klinik selepas bangunan tersebut rosak akibat banjir.

The village lost its only clinic after the building was damaged by flooding.

The experiencer need not be an individual human, but it is normally capable of being meaningfully affected. A village, company, or team can lose a resource, customer, or member because discourse treats it as an organized unit.

If the item itself is topical, choose hilang:

Dompetnya hilang ketika dia sedang membeli tiket.

His wallet went missing while he was buying a ticket.

If an agent is known and relevant, use an agentive verb and appropriate voice:

Dompetnya dicuri oleh seorang lelaki yang berpura-pura meminta bantuan.

His wallet was stolen by a man pretending to ask for help.

The passive sentence is stronger: it commits the speaker to theft. Formal possibility does not license swapping it for kehilangan without changing evidential content.

Choosing the kedatangan experiencer frame

Kedatangan is extremely common as the noun “arrival”: kedatangan tetamu disambut. Its predicate-like experiencer use—kami kedatangan tamu/tetamu “we had visitors arrive”—is dictionary-supported but marked in much contemporary Malaysian conversation (formal/literary).

Kami kedatangan tetamu yang tidak disangka-sangka ketika persiapan belum selesai.

We had unexpected guests arrive while the preparations were not yet complete. (formal/literary)

This frame suits an arrival viewed as reaching or affecting the host domain. Neutral alternatives divide the perspectives more explicitly:

Tetamu yang tidak disangka-sangka datang ketika persiapan kami belum selesai.

Unexpected guests arrived while our preparations were not yet complete.

Kami menerima tetamu walaupun persiapan masih belum selesai.

We received the guests even though preparations were not yet complete.

The first centers the visitors' arrival. The second makes the hosts active and hospitable. The marked kedatangan predicate highlights the host's experience of being visited. Choose it deliberately rather than as the compulsory translation of English have visitors.

Definiteness, animacy, and topicality

Experiencer subjects are commonly animate or group-like because affectedness presupposes a participant that can undergo a condition or deprivation. Saya, dia, keluarga itu, pasukan kami, and kampung tersebut make natural subjects. Inanimate institutions can be personified in formal prose when the loss matters to their functioning.

The lost theme after kehilangan may be definite or indefinite:

Dia kehilangan dompet kulit yang baru dibelinya.

She lost the leather wallet she had just bought.

Syarikat itu kehilangan beberapa pelanggan selepas menaikkan yuran.

The company lost several customers after raising its fees.

Definiteness does not choose the construction by itself. What matters is whether discourse continues with the experiencer or the lost theme. Compare:

Amin kehilangan dompetnya di stesen. Dia terus pergi ke balai polis.

Amin lost his wallet at the station. He immediately went to the police station.

Dompet Amin hilang di stesen. Dompet itu mengandungi semua kad banknya.

Amin's wallet went missing at the station. It contained all his bank cards.

The first pair tracks Amin; the second tracks the wallet. Information structure, not truth conditions alone, motivates the alternation.

💡
Topicality is visible across sentence boundaries. Keep the experiencer as subject if later clauses continue with what that participant felt or did; choose hilang, datang, or a true passive if later clauses track the theme or arriving visitor.

One highland-house episode in dialogue

“Saya sejuk sangat. Firdaus pula hilang dompet, lepas tu tiba-tiba tetamu datang ke rumah. Memang kelam-kabut malam ni!”

‘I'm freezing. Then Firdaus lost his wallet, and suddenly guests came to the house. What a chaotic night!’ (informal Malaysian dialogue)

The speaker uses everyday sejuk sangat, a colloquial root-based hilang dompet, lepas tu, and visitor-centered tetamu datang. Replacing them mechanically with longer ke-...-an forms would make the exchange more formal and change its perspective.

The episode in a news sentence

Seorang penghuni rumah tumpangan dilaporkan kedinginan, manakala rakannya kehilangan dompet ketika kumpulan itu kedatangan tetamu dari luar daerah.

One guesthouse resident was reported to be suffering from the cold, while his friend lost a wallet as the group received visitors from outside the district. (formal/news style)

The news sentence foregrounds affected participants and compresses three developments into parallel predicates. Kedatangan tetamu in this predicate frame is deliberately formal/marked; a less compressed report could say ketika tetamu dari luar daerah tiba.

The episode in narrative

Saya mula kedinginan apabila hujan menembusi jaket, Firdaus menyedari bahawa dia kehilangan dompetnya, dan pada saat itulah kami kedatangan tiga orang tetamu yang sesat.

I began to feel chilled when rain soaked through my jacket, Firdaus realized that he had lost his wallet, and at that very moment three lost visitors arrived at our place. (narrative/literary)

The narrative uses the construction to keep saya, Firdaus, and kami as successive experiencer centers. A visitor-centered version—tiga orang tetamu yang sesat tiba—would turn the narrative camera toward the arrivals instead.

When not to choose the construction

Do not use an experiencer predicate when the participant intentionally causes the event. Dia menyembunyikan dompet means he hid the wallet; dia kehilangan dompet means he was deprived of it. Do not use it merely to avoid naming an agent when an agentive passive is established and relevant.

Do not assume every ke-...-an word is an experiencer predicate. Kesihatan, kebaikan, and noun kedatangan normally behave as nouns. Syntax and lexical convention decide whether a form predicates affected experience.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating all three perspectives as interchangeable

❌ Kehilangan dompet sentiasa bererti dompet itu dicuri.

Incorrect claim—losing a wallet does not always mean that it was stolen.

✅ Dia kehilangan dompet, tetapi belum diketahui sama ada dompet itu tercicir atau dicuri.

He lost his wallet, but it is not yet known whether it was dropped or stolen.

2. Using kedinginan for a neutral environmental description

❌ Bilik itu kedinginan kerana penghawa dinginnya terlalu kuat.

Poor neutral description—use sejuk for the room and reserve kedinginan for an affected experiencer or coldness as a noun.

✅ Bilik itu sejuk, jadi saya mula kedinginan selepas beberapa minit.

The room was cold, so I began to feel chilled after a few minutes.

3. Forcing the marked arrival frame into casual speech

⚠️ Bro, kami kedatangan tamu ramai tadi!

Dictionary-supported structure, but mismatched with this highly casual contemporary context.

✅ Bro, ramai tetamu datang tadi!

Bro, lots of guests came earlier! (informal)

4. Choosing an experiencer subject when the theme is the discourse topic

❌ Amin kehilangan dompetnya. Dia diperbuat daripada kulit coklat.

Incoherent pronoun tracking—dia normally continues with Amin, not the wallet.

✅ Dompet Amin hilang di stesen. Dompet itu diperbuat daripada kulit coklat.

Amin's wallet went missing at the station. It was made of brown leather.

Key Takeaways

Choose kedinginan, kehilangan, or marked experiencer kedatangan when the affected participant is the discourse center. Choose environmental, theme-centered, arrival-centered, or true passive alternatives when the paragraph tracks another participant or asserts an agentive cause. Definiteness and animacy shape naturalness, but topicality and evidential meaning decide among formally possible clauses.
