ke-...-an Experiencer Constructions: Aspect, Modality, and Negation in Malaysian Malay

Affected-experiencer ke-...-an predicates do not conjugate for tense. Separate preverbal particles build temporal, modal, and negative meanings: sudah kehilangan, akan kehilangan, boleh kehilangan, tidak kedinginan, and belum kehilangan. Yet position is only half the problem. Because cold, loss, and an arrival affecting a host are often stative or uncontrolled, some grammatically imaginable combinations require a special context or a different expression.

This page covers particles and scope only. Formation, participant roles, discourse choice, and advanced extraction/register belong to the other four series pages. See Malay marker order for the system beyond these predicates.

Core marker positions

MarkerExampleInterpretation
sudahDia sudah kehilangan dompet.the loss is realized
sedangSaya sedang kedinginan.the cold-affected state is presented as ongoing; contextually marked
akanDia akan kehilangan peluang.the deprivation is prospective
bolehDia boleh kehilangan peluang.the loss is possible, not normally an ability
tidakSaya tidak kedinginan.the affected state is denied
belumDia belum kehilangan akses.loss has not occurred up to the reference point
janganJangan sampai kehilangan dompet.a warning to prevent an uncontrolled result

Every actual ke-...-an word stays solid. Particles remain separate. There is no past form kehilanganed and no joined spelling sudahkehilangan.

Sudah: a realized state or event

Sudah presents loss or affectedness as having become real by the reference point.

Dia sudah kehilangan dompet sebelum menyedari zip begnya terbuka.

She had already lost her wallet before noticing that her bag's zip was open.

Selepas menunggu dalam hujan, kami sudah kedinginan dan mahu pulang.

After waiting in the rain, we were already chilled and wanted to go home.

With kehilangan, sudah can highlight the transition into deprivation or the resulting state of no longer having something. With kedinginan, it says the cold-affected state has set in. The predicate itself does not change.

The marked arrival experiencer can also combine with sudah, but contemporary Malaysian often prefers a clearer alternative:

Kami sudah kedatangan tetamu dari luar daerah ketika bekalan elektrik terputus.

Visitors from outside the district had already arrived at our place when the power failed. (marked/formal)

Tetamu dari luar daerah sudah tiba ketika bekalan elektrik terputus.

The visitors from outside the district had already arrived when the power failed.

The second centers the visitors and is the neutral unmarked formulation.

Sedang, masih, and states

Sedang normally presents an event in progress. A state predicate such as kedinginan has duration, so sedang kedinginan is grammatically interpretable, especially when contrasted with another participant. Nevertheless, Malaysian commonly uses masih kedinginan, mula kedinginan, or simple kedinginan because the state does not need progressive staging.

Ketika petugas tiba, dua orang pendaki sedang kedinginan di bawah pondok kecil.

When the staff arrived, two hikers were suffering from the cold under a small shelter. (marked progressive)

Walaupun sudah berselimut, mangsa itu masih kedinginan.

Although already wrapped in a blanket, the victim was still chilled.

Sedang kehilangan dompet is normally poor for one bounded loss: losing possession is not easily observed as an unfolding activity. It becomes possible only in a gradual or repeated deprivation reading, such as a company currently losing customers. Even there, Malaysian may prefer sedang mengalami kehilangan pelanggan in technical prose or semakin kehilangan pelanggan when the trend is increasing.

Syarikat itu semakin kehilangan pelanggan sejak yuran dinaikkan.

The company is losing more and more customers since the fees were raised. (formal)

💡
Particle placement can be correct while aspectual meaning is poor. Before adding sedang, ask whether the lexical predicate offers an unfolding phase rather than a state or abrupt boundary.

Two aspect markers

Compatible markers can stack. Their order expresses scope.

Dia sudah pernah kehilangan dompet semasa melancong seorang diri.

She has lost a wallet before while travelling alone.

Kami masih belum kehilangan harapan walaupun pencarian memasuki hari ketiga.

We still have not lost hope even though the search has entered its third day.

In sudah pernah kehilangan, realized sudah scopes over experiential pernah: at least one prior loss is established. In masih belum kehilangan, masih maintains the “not yet” state. Reversing the markers does not freely preserve meaning.

Telah can replace sudah in formal reporting (formal):

Pasukan itu telah kehilangan dua pemain utama akibat kecederaan.

The team has lost two key players through injury. (formal)

Akan and prospective loss

Akan makes a future or predicted affected state explicit.

Pemohon akan kehilangan kelayakan jika dokumen palsu dikemukakan.

Applicants will lose their eligibility if false documents are submitted. (formal)

Tanpa pakaian yang sesuai, para pendaki akan kedinginan selepas matahari terbenam.

Without suitable clothing, the hikers will become chilled after sunset.

The future time phrase alone can sometimes carry the same orientation: Pendaki kedinginan selepas matahari terbenam may be a general prediction. Akan makes the prospective stance overt.

For the marked arrival frame, kami akan kedatangan tetamu is possible in the dictionary-supported affected-host construal but not the ordinary Malaysian way to announce a planned visit. Use Kami akan menerima tetamu or Tetamu akan datang when the event is expected and neutral.

Boleh: possibility more readily than ability

Because loss and exposure are normally uncontrolled, boleh before these predicates usually expresses possibility or risk, not learned ability.

Anda boleh kehilangan data jika komputer dimatikan ketika kemas kini sedang berjalan.

You can lose data if the computer is switched off while an update is running.

Kanak-kanak boleh kedinginan dengan cepat apabila pakaian mereka basah.

Children can become chilled quickly when their clothes are wet.

Dia boleh kehilangan dompet does not ordinarily mean she has the skill of losing a wallet. Context interprets boleh as possible adverse outcome. To express permission, the event would have to be construed unusually as controllable, which clashes with the normal experiencer reading.

Tidak and belum

Tidak denies the state or event. Belum says it has not occurred up to the relevant point and generally leaves a later possibility open.

Saya tidak kedinginan kerana jaket ini menahan angin dengan baik.

I am not chilled because this jacket blocks the wind well.

Dia tidak kehilangan dompet; dompet itu tersimpan di dalam poket sebelah.

She did not lose her wallet; it was stored in the side pocket.

Pasukan itu belum kehilangan peluang untuk mara ke peringkat akhir.

The team has not yet lost its chance to advance to the final stage.

Kami belum kedatangan tetamu ketika makanan mula dihidangkan.

No visitors had yet arrived at our place when the food began to be served. (marked/formal)

The last sentence is structurally possible in the restricted experiencer frame, but Tetamu belum tiba is more neutral Malaysian. Marker grammar does not erase register differences in the lexical construction.

Jangan and the problem of control

Direct jangan + predicate works best when the addressee can control the prohibited action. Losing something or becoming chilled is normally accidental, so bare Jangan kehilangan dompet can sound like an unrealistic command. Malaysian often inserts sampai “to the point that” or chooses a preventive action.

Jangan sampai kehilangan pas masuk itu sebelum penerbangan.

Make sure you don't lose that boarding pass before the flight.

Pakai jaket ini supaya kamu tidak kedinginan di luar.

Wear this jacket so that you don't get chilled outside.

Jangan kedatangan tetamu is not a neutral way to prohibit visitors. Say Jangan terima tetamu malam ini if the host should not receive guests, or Tetamu tidak dibenarkan datang in a formal rule.

The phrase jangan sampai scopes over the adverse result; it does not turn kehilangan into an intentional action.

💡
With low-control predicates, formulate the warning around prevention: jangan sampai kehilangan, supaya tidak kedinginan, or a controllable action such as simpan dengan selamat.

Bukan contrasts a participant or classification

Do not use bukan as the ordinary verbal negator before these predicates. It contrasts a focused noun phrase or rejects a nominal classification.

Bukan dia yang kehilangan dompet, tetapi rakannya.

It was not she who lost the wallet, but her friend.

Ordinary event negation is Dia tidak kehilangan dompet. In Kehilangan itu bukan kecuaian kecil, both kehilangan itu and kecuaian kecil are nominal, so bukan is appropriate.

Common Mistakes

1. Moving sedang after the predicate

❌ Saya kedinginan sedang di luar khemah.

Incorrect particle order—sedang precedes the predicate.

✅ Saya sedang kedinginan di luar khemah ketika bantuan tiba.

I was suffering from the cold outside the tent when help arrived. (marked progressive)

2. Joining an aspect marker to the word

❌ Dia sudahkehilangan kad pengenalannya.

Incorrect spelling—sudah is separate from kehilangan.

✅ Dia sudah kehilangan kad pengenalannya dan sedang membuat laporan.

She has lost her identity card and is making a report.

3. Using bukan for verbal negation

❌ Kami bukan kehilangan harapan selepas keputusan itu.

Incorrect ordinary negation—use tidak before the predicate.

✅ Kami tidak kehilangan harapan selepas keputusan itu diumumkan.

We did not lose hope after the decision was announced.

4. Treating boleh as ability without context

❌ Dia pandai kehilangan dompet kerana dia boleh kehilangan dompet.

Incorrect interpretation—boleh normally marks possibility in this adverse frame, not skill.

✅ Dia boleh kehilangan dompet jika begnya dibiarkan terbuka.

She could lose her wallet if her bag is left open.

5. Using a direct prohibition for an uncontrolled arrival

❌ Jangan kedatangan tetamu petang ini.

Incorrect control structure—the host does not directly control the arrival through this predicate.

✅ Jangan terima tetamu petang ini kerana rumah sedang dibaiki.

Do not receive guests this afternoon because the house is being repaired.

Key Takeaways

Aspect, modal, and negative particles precede an unchanged, solid ke-...-an predicate. Sudah and akan locate realized and prospective affected states; boleh usually marks risk or possibility; tidak denies, while belum means not yet. Sedang is constrained by stativity and bounded loss, and jangan requires control, so preventive expressions such as jangan sampai kehilangan are often more natural.
