Malay kenal covers knowing a person through acquaintance and recognizing someone or something. Mengenal presents that relation in active transitive form, dikenal foregrounds the recognized or reputed entity, memperkenalkan causes someone or something to become known, and terkenal is the established adjective “well-known/famous.” The family moves naturally from recognition to acquaintance, reputation, and introduction.
English know hides a crucial distinction. Kenal concerns familiarity with an entity, while tahu concerns facts or awareness that something is true. The correct Malay form depends on the kind of knowledge, not on the single English gloss; the wider factual-knowledge family is covered under tahu and mengetahui.
Family and frames
| Form | Typical frame | Core meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| kenal | kenal + person/thing | know, be acquainted with, recognize | neutral everyday |
| mengenal / mengenali | mengenal(i) + object | know or recognize more explicitly | neutral/formal |
| dikenal / dikenali | dikenal(i) sebagai/kerana | be known or recognized | neutral/formal |
| memperkenalkan | memperkenalkan X kepada Y | introduce X to Y; present X | neutral |
No member conjugates for person or tense:
| Time/person | Malay | Marker |
|---|---|---|
| I, past | dahulu saya kenal keluarganya | dahulu |
| we, continuing | kami masih mengenali beliau | masih |
Kenal is therefore not a bare infinitive, and mengenal is not marked for present tense. Voice and derivation shape the participant structure; separate words locate the event in time.
Kenal: everyday acquaintance and recognition
Bare kenal is a natural stative predicate with a direct object. It can describe personal acquaintance or the ability to identify something familiar.
Saya kenal dia sejak kami bekerja di Johor Bahru.
I've known her since we worked in Johor Bahru.
Do you know the man who is talking to the director?
I recognize that voice, but I can't see who is calling.
With orang, tempat, suara, and similar entities, kenal expresses familiarity. With a proposition, use tahu instead:
Saya tahu dia sudah berpindah, tetapi saya tidak kenal jiran baharunya.
I know that she has moved, but I don't know her new neighbor.
This is not a strict person-versus-fact rule: one can tahu nama seseorang “know someone's name” and kenal sebuah bandar “know/be familiar with a city.” The deeper distinction is factual awareness versus familiarity or recognition.
Mengenal and mengenali
Mengenal is the active transitive form specified in this family and occurs frequently in formal, reflective, and classificatory contexts. Mengenali, with -i, is also a standard and very common Malaysian form, especially for sustained familiarity or identification. Their uses overlap substantially; there is no perfectly reliable one-line distinction, so learn frequent combinations rather than inventing a rigid contrast.
Program itu membantu murid mengenal budaya masyarakat Orang Asli.
The program helps pupils learn about and recognize Orang Asli culture.
Selepas beberapa bulan, kami mula mengenali corak kerjanya.
After several months, we began to recognize her working pattern.
It is difficult to know a person through online messages alone.
In spontaneous conversation, bare kenal is often the simpler choice. In careful prose, mengenal/mengenali more explicitly marks active transitivity. This is a gradient register and constructional preference, not a claim that one set is grammatical and the other is not.
Dikenal and dikenali: passive recognition or reputation
The passive forms make the known entity prominent. Dikenal sebagai is especially useful for a public identity, role, nickname, or reputation.
The area is known as a center for making labu sayong pottery.
Beliau dikenali kerana sumbangannya dalam bidang kesihatan awam.
She is known for her contribution to public health. (formal)
Pokok ini mudah dikenali melalui bentuk daunnya.
This tree is easy to recognize by the shape of its leaves.
Write dikenal and dikenali solid. Attached di- marks passive voice; separate di marks a place, as in dikenali di seluruh negeri “known throughout the state.”
Memperkenalkan: causing something to become known
Memperkenalkan takes the person, thing, policy, or idea being introduced as its direct object. Add the receiving audience with kepada.
Izinkan saya memperkenalkan diri sebelum pembentangan bermula.
Allow me to introduce myself before the presentation begins. (formal/polite)
Nadia memperkenalkan rakan sekerjanya kepada ibu bapanya.
Nadia introduced her colleague to her parents.
Kerajaan negeri memperkenalkan skim bantuan baharu untuk peniaga kecil.
The state government introduced a new assistance scheme for small traders. (formal)
In memperkenalkan diri, diri is the object made known; Malay does not use a separate reflexive pronoun corresponding exactly to English myself/herself. In an informal introduction, Biar saya kenalkan, ini Farid can occur, but careful declarative prose retains memperkenalkan.
Perkenalan and terkenal
Perkenalan names an introduction or the beginning of an acquaintance. It can refer to the social event itself or to a relationship established through it.
Their acquaintance began at a writing workshop in Kuching.
Terkenal is an established adjective meaning well-known or famous. Although it contains ter-, it is not simply the accidental form of “know.” Its complements specify the public identity or basis of fame: terkenal sebagai, terkenal kerana, and terkenal dengan all occur, with the choice reflecting the relation intended.
Taiping is well-known for its heritage buildings and lake gardens.
The restaurant is known as a breakfast spot among local residents.
Terkenal can describe broad recognition without implying celebrity. Translate according to scale and context rather than automatically choosing English famous.
Common Mistakes
1. Using kenal for propositional knowledge
❌ Saya kenal bahawa mesyuarat itu dibatalkan.
Incorrect—factual awareness takes tahu, not kenal.
✅ Saya tahu bahawa mesyuarat itu dibatalkan.
I know that the meeting was cancelled.
2. Adding an English tense ending
❌ Kami kenaled dia semasa belajar di Melaka.
Incorrect—Malay predicates do not take an English past-tense ending.
✅ Kami kenal dia semasa belajar di Melaka.
We knew him when we were studying in Malacca.
3. Reversing the introduction roles
❌ Siti memperkenalkan kepada ibunya rakan baharu.
Unclear and poorly ordered for the intended introduction frame.
✅ Siti memperkenalkan rakan baharunya kepada ibunya.
Siti introduced her new friend to her mother.
4. Splitting passive di-
❌ Kampung itu di kenal sebagai pusat anyaman.
Incorrect—the passive prefix di- is written solid.
✅ Kampung itu dikenal sebagai pusat anyaman.
The village is known as a weaving center.
5. Deriving terkenal word by word
❌ Namanya terkenal oleh saya sahaja.
Wrong frame for the intended meaning ‘known only to me’; terkenal normally describes broader reputation.
✅ Hanya saya yang mengenali namanya.
Only I know his name.
Key Takeaways
Use everyday kenal + entity for familiarity or recognition, and tahu for factual knowledge. Mengenal/mengenali are active transitive forms common in careful contexts; dikenal/dikenali foreground what is known; memperkenalkan X kepada Y introduces X to Y; perkenalan names the social beginning; and lexical terkenal describes public recognition. None of these forms carries person or tense.
