The dapat family separates several ideas that English often covers with can or get. Invariant dapat before a verb can mark achieved or circumstantial possibility, mendapat presents something as received, mendapatkan presents it as obtained or secured, and pendapatan conventionally means income. These distinctions come from complement type and derivation, not from person or tense.
This page focuses on the lexical family. See dapat as an aspect-and-modality marker for its wider interaction with possibility and successful completion, and boleh for ability and permission for the central modal contrast.
Forms, frames, and meanings
| Form | Frame | Core meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| dapat | dapat + verb | can, manage to, get to | neutral/formal; context-sensitive |
| mendapat | mendapat + noun phrase | receive, get, be awarded | neutral |
| mendapatkan | mendapatkan + noun phrase | obtain, secure, acquire | neutral/formal |
| didapat | noun phrase + didapat | be obtained | neutral; often replaced by diperoleh in formal prose |
| pendapatan | pendapatan + possessor/source | income, earnings | neutral/formal |
There is no person-or-tense paradigm:
| Subject/time | Form | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| saya, semalam | semalam saya mendapat jawapan | I received an answer yesterday |
| mereka, sekarang | sekarang mereka mendapat bantuan | they are receiving help now |
| kami, future | kami akan mendapat keputusan esok | we will receive the result tomorrow |
The verb remains mendapat throughout. Separate words such as semalam, sekarang, sudah, and akan locate the event in time.
Modal dapat before a verb
Before another verb, dapat commonly means that circumstances allow an event or that the subject succeeds in carrying it out. It does not take untuk in the basic modal frame.
Dengan pas ini, semua peserta dapat masuk tanpa perlu beratur.
With this pass, all participants can enter without having to queue.
Selepas mencuba beberapa kali, saya akhirnya dapat menghubungi klinik itu.
After trying several times, I finally managed to contact the clinic.
Maklumat lanjut dapat diperoleh melalui laman rasmi kementerian.
Further information can be obtained through the ministry's official website. (formal)
In the third example, dapat expresses impersonal possibility and is especially natural in formal instructions. In ordinary permission questions, boleh is usually the direct choice: Boleh saya masuk? asks “May I come in?” By contrast, Saya tidak dapat masuk normally reports that entry was not possible.
Mendapat: receiving or coming to have
Mendapat takes a noun phrase and presents the subject as recipient, experiencer, or beneficiary. The event need not involve deliberate searching.
Farah mendapat hadiah utama dalam pertandingan itu.
Farah received the grand prize in the competition.
Pesakit itu mendapat rawatan segera di jabatan kecemasan.
The patient received immediate treatment in the emergency department.
Cadangan tersebut mendapat sokongan daripada penduduk setempat.
The proposal received support from local residents. (formal)
English get can also mean become, understand, fetch, arrive, or persuade. Do not select mendapat simply because an English translation contains get. Malay chooses a different verb for each lexical meaning: menjadi marah “get angry,” memahami “get/understand,” and mengambil “get/fetch,” for example.
Mendapatkan: obtaining or securing
Mendapatkan is more agentive and goal-directed. It often implies an effort, procedure, request, purchase, or search that results in acquisition.
Penganjur perlu mendapatkan kebenaran polis sebelum menutup jalan itu.
The organizer needs to obtain police permission before closing that road.
Kami mendapatkan sebut harga daripada tiga pembekal tempatan.
We obtained quotations from three local suppliers.
Dia pergi ke kaunter untuk mendapatkan salinan sijil kelahirannya.
She went to the counter to obtain a copy of her birth certificate.
The difference between mendapat hadiah and mendapatkan kebenaran is therefore not merely stylistic. A prize arrives to its recipient; permission is normally secured through action. Real contexts overlap, so both verbs may sometimes describe the same result while presenting it differently.
Passive forms: didapat, didapati, and diperoleh
Didapat is the regular passive counterpart of mendapat in the sense “obtained/found,” and it is written solid. In formal Malaysian prose, however, diperoleh is often the more idiomatic word for results, information, permission, or resources.
Bukti itu didapat daripada fail lama yang tersimpan di pejabat.
The evidence was obtained from an old file kept at the office.
Data yang diperoleh akan dianalisis mengikut daerah.
The data obtained will be analyzed by district. (formal)
Do not confuse didapat with didapati. The established reporting verb didapati often means “was found/observed to be,” especially in official, scientific, and legal prose.
Pemeriksaan mendapati bahawa dua alat pemadam api telah tamat tempoh.
The inspection found that two fire extinguishers had expired. (formal)
Similarly, terdapat means “there is/are” or “is found,” as in Terdapat tiga kesilapan dalam borang ini. It is a lexicalized member whose meaning cannot be predicted as ordinary English get.
Pendapatan and other lexical nouns
Pendapatan is the conventional noun for income or earnings, not a general name for everything that has been obtained.
Pendapatan isi rumah mereka berkurang selepas musim tengkujuh.
Their household income fell after the monsoon season.
Beliau mempunyai pendapatan sampingan daripada jualan kuih.
She has supplementary income from selling cakes.
In academic research, dapatan means a finding or set of findings: dapatan kajian “research findings.” Perolehan can mean acquisition, proceeds, or procurement depending on the institutional context. These nouns are lexical choices; blindly attaching a nominal prefix to match English getting will not work.
Common Mistakes
1. Using dapat for a straightforward permission request
❌ Dapat saya guna tandas ini?
Unnatural for a routine request for permission in Malaysian Malay.
✅ Boleh saya guna tandas ini?
May I use this toilet?
2. Inserting untuk in the modal frame
❌ Para peserta dapat untuk masuk pada pukul lapan.
Incorrect—the modal-like dapat normally combines directly with the verb.
✅ Para peserta dapat masuk pada pukul lapan.
The participants can enter at eight o'clock.
3. Using mendapat where deliberate acquisition is central
⚠️ Pemohon mesti mendapat kebenaran bertulis sebelum memulakan kerja.
Grammatical, but less explicit about deliberate acquisition when the applicant must actively secure the permission.
✅ Pemohon mesti mendapatkan kebenaran bertulis sebelum memulakan kerja.
The applicant must obtain written permission before starting work. (formal)
4. Splitting passive di-
❌ Maklumat itu di dapat daripada sumber yang tidak dikenal pasti.
Incorrect—the verbal prefix di- is written solid.
✅ Maklumat itu didapat daripada sumber yang tidak dikenal pasti.
The information was obtained from an unidentified source.
5. Interpreting pendapatan compositionally
❌ Pendapatan saya hari ini ialah sebuah hadiah.
Incorrect—pendapatan conventionally means income, not any item received.
✅ Saya mendapat sebuah hadiah hari ini.
I received a gift today.
Key Takeaways
Use dapat + verb for circumstantial possibility or successful achievement, mendapat + noun phrase for receiving, and mendapatkan + noun phrase for actively obtaining. Didapat is a solidly written passive, while formal prose frequently prefers diperoleh. Learn pendapatan “income,” dapatan “finding,” didapati “was found to be,” and terdapat “there is/are” as established lexical members rather than predictable translations of English get.
