Malay has several ways to say what a message is about, but they are not interchangeable decorations. Tentang is the neutral topic marker of conversation and general prose, mengenai is especially at home in news, administrative, and formal writing, and perihal packages the topic as a “matter” or “subject,” often in a heading or formal noun phrase. Genre therefore helps select the form.
Kita bincang tentang penutupan klinik itu selepas makan, boleh?
Can we discuss the closure of that clinic after we eat? (informal conversation)
This page covers topic relations, register, and complementation. It leaves the internal syntax of subordinate clauses to subordinate-clause relations and the derivation of forms such as mengenai to the relevant morphology pages.
tentang: the neutral topic marker
Tentang + noun phrase identifies the subject matter of speech, thought, writing, or discussion. It is neutral in contemporary Standard Malaysian Malay and works in both ordinary conversation and non-specialist writing.
Saya hendak bertanya tentang jadual bas esok.
I want to ask about tomorrow's bus schedule. (neutral)
Kami berbual tentang rancangan cuti sambil minum kopi.
We chatted about our holiday plans over coffee. (neutral)
Artikel itu memberikan penerangan tentang cara memohon bantuan, tetapi bahagian akhir agak ringkas.
The article provides an explanation of how to apply for assistance, but the final section is rather brief. (neutral)
After verbs such as bercakap, bertanya, berbual, and berbincang, tentang makes the topic role explicit. A transitive verb may instead take a direct object: membincangkan penutupan klinik “discuss the clinic closure.” Do not mechanically insert tentang after every English verb translated with about; the verb's Malay argument pattern still matters.
With a clause-like topic, speakers often package the content with hal “matter” or use an interrogative expression rather than attach an unrestricted finite clause directly.
Kami berbincang tentang hal yang berlaku di klinik semalam.
We discussed what happened at the clinic yesterday. (neutral)
The full choice among bahawa, sama ada, relative clauses, and interrogative complements belongs to dedicated clause pages. The dependable pattern here is tentang + nominalized or noun-like topic.
mengenai: formal aboutness, not merely a longer tentang
Topic-marker mengenai also introduces subject matter, but it is frequent in journalism, announcements, reports, and official correspondence (formal). It often follows nouns such as laporan, kenyataan, and maklumat, as well as formal verbs of discussion or inquiry.
Akhbar itu menyiarkan laporan mengenai penutupan sementara klinik daerah tersebut.
The newspaper published a report on the temporary closure of the district clinic. (journalistic/formal)
Kementerian akan mengeluarkan kenyataan lanjut mengenai waktu operasi baharu petang ini.
The ministry will issue a further statement regarding the new operating hours this afternoon. (official/formal)
Mesyuarat itu membincangkan aduan penduduk mengenai kekurangan doktor pada hujung minggu.
The meeting discussed residents' complaints concerning the shortage of doctors at weekends. (formal)
In casual conversation, mengenai is grammatical, but it can sound more administrative than necessary. A friend will normally ask Awak tahu apa-apa tentang klinik itu?, not because mengenai is wrong, but because neutral tentang fits the interaction better.
The same spelling mengenai has a distinct lexical verbal use meaning “hit, strike, or make contact with.” In that frame it is a transitive predicate and takes the thing struck as its direct object; it is not a preposition meaning “about.”
Bola itu mengenai tingkap dapur lalu kacanya retak.
The ball hit the kitchen window, causing the glass to crack. (neutral lexical verb)
Serpihan kayu mengenai lengannya ketika dia memotong dahan itu.
A wood splinter struck his arm while he was cutting the branch. (neutral lexical verb)
Compare laporan mengenai klinik itu, where mengenai klinik itu supplies the report's topic, with bola mengenai tingkap, where bola is the subject and tingkap the object of an impact event. Position, governing expression, and meaning—not spelling alone—identify the construction.
perihal: the matter as a named subject
Perihal is a noun meaning “matter, subject, or particulars.” It is common in headings, labels, and deliberately formal framing (formal), and it can introduce a following noun phrase as the matter under consideration. Because it names the subject as a thing, it is less conversational than tentang.
Perihal Penutupan Sementara Klinik Daerah
Subject: Temporary Closure of the District Clinic. (official heading)
Surat itu menjelaskan perihal penempatan sementara para petugas kesihatan.
The letter explains the matter of the temporary placement of the health workers. (formal)
Beliau enggan mengulas lanjut perihal pertikaian tersebut.
He declined to comment further on the matter of the dispute. (formal/literary)
In many official letters, the compact heading Perkara: or PER: is also conventional. Perihal remains useful in prose and headings, but English regarding does not require it. In a casual message, Saya nak tanya tentang temu janji saya is natural; replacing tentang with perihal creates a conspicuously formal voice.
One issue across three genres
The same real-world issue can be framed differently because the communicative setting changes.
| Genre | Natural framing | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation | tentang penutupan klinik | neutral, direct topic marking |
| News report | laporan mengenai penutupan klinik | formal informational genre |
| Official heading | Perihal Penutupan Sementara Klinik | the matter is named as a document subject |
Eh, awak dah dengar tentang penutupan klinik itu?
Hey, have you heard about the closure of that clinic? (informal)
Menurut laporan mengenai penutupan itu, perkhidmatan kecemasan akan diteruskan seperti biasa.
According to the report on the closure, emergency services will continue as usual. (journalistic/formal)
Perihal: Perubahan Tempat Rawatan Sepanjang Tempoh Penutupan
Subject: Change of Treatment Location During the Closure Period. (official heading)
The proposition need not change; the genre changes how the writer presents its topic. English uses about, on, concerning, and regarding with overlapping distributions, but a word-for-word match will not reliably reproduce this Malay register ladder.
Word boundaries
Write a topic marker separately from its complement: tentang klinik, mengenai permohonan, perihal mesyuarat. The same separation applies to free locative di pejabat and directional ke klinik. Attached passive di- and ordinal or derivational ke- remain part of their words: ditutup, kedua, kesihatan. Standard Malaysian Rumi spelling reflects grammatical structure.
Common Mistakes
1. Making perihal sound casual
❌ Wei, aku nak tanya perihal bola semalam.
Register mismatch—perihal is conspicuously formal in this casual opening.
✅ Wei, aku nak tanya tentang bola semalam.
Hey, I want to ask about yesterday's football. (informal)
2. Treating lexical mengenai as a topic preposition
❌ Bola itu mengenai tentang tingkap dapur.
Incorrect—verbal mengenai already takes the struck object directly.
✅ Bola itu mengenai tingkap dapur.
The ball hit the kitchen window. (neutral)
3. Using mengenai as a transitive topic verb after a person
❌ Kami mengenai masalah itu dalam mesyuarat.
Incorrect for ‘we discussed that problem’—this frame wrongly makes mengenai the main verb.
✅ Kami berbincang tentang masalah itu dalam mesyuarat.
We discussed that problem in the meeting. (neutral)
4. Treating nominal perihal as the main verb
❌ Kami perihal jualan harian dalam mesyuarat tadi.
Incorrect—perihal is not a verb meaning ‘discuss.’
✅ Kami berbincang tentang jualan harian dalam mesyuarat tadi.
We discussed daily sales in the meeting just now. (neutral)
5. Joining a free relator to its complement
❌ Notis itu mengandungi maklumat mengenaitarikh pendaftaran.
Incorrect word boundary—the topic marker and its complement are separate words.
✅ Notis itu mengandungi maklumat mengenai tarikh pendaftaran.
The notice contains information regarding the registration date. (formal)
Key Takeaways
Use neutral tentang for ordinary topic marking, formal mengenai in informational and institutional genres, and nominal perihal when a heading or formal phrase names the matter itself. Analyze lexical mengenai “hit/strike” as a separate transitive verb, and let genre and grammatical frame—not an isolated English preposition—determine the Malay choice.
