The central meaning of diper- combines a derivational family with passive viewpoint. In a transparent adjective family, the base supplies a scale such as size, length, or speed; per- contributes the idea of moving the patient farther along that scale; and passive di- makes the patient the clause’s starting point. Thus diperbesar does not merely mean “big”: it presents something as being made bigger than it was.
This page maps that semantic network. Spelling and base recovery belong on the formation page, while argument structure, competing forms, and formal-colloquial distribution belong on the usage page. The semantic lesson here is that diper- has no single English translation independent of its base.
The transparent core: patient-oriented scalar change
Consider three complete root families:
| Base | Active family member | Passive family member | Semantic path |
|---|---|---|---|
| besar “big” | memperbesar “make bigger” | diperbesar “be made bigger” | patient moves upward on a size or importance scale |
| panjang “long” | memperpanjang “make longer” | diperpanjang “be made longer” | patient gains spatial or temporal extent |
| cepat “fast” | mempercepat “make faster” | dipercepat “be made faster” | event reaches completion sooner or proceeds at greater speed |
The family can be visualized as three linked stages rather than three unrelated dictionary entries:
BESAR “big” → MEMPERBESAR “an actor makes X bigger” → DIPERBESAR “X is made bigger”
PANJANG “long” → MEMPERPANJANG “an actor makes X longer” → DIPERPANJANG “X is made longer”
CEPAT “fast” → MEMPERCEPAT “an actor makes X faster” → DIPERCEPAT “X is made faster”
Pelan lantai itu diperbesar kepada skala 1:100 sebelum dicetak.
The floor plan was enlarged to a scale of 1:100 before being printed.
Isu kecil itu diperbesar sehingga menimbulkan pertelingkahan.
The minor issue was magnified until it caused an argument.
The first diperbesar describes physical size; the second describes perceived importance. The same scalar logic supports both: something is represented as bigger, literally or figuratively, than before.
Panjang: extension through space, time, and discourse
The base panjang supplies extent, but the relevant dimension comes from the patient. A road gains spatial length, a deadline gains duration, and an explanation gains discourse length. English chooses different verbs—extend, prolong, lengthen—where Malay can preserve one root family.
Laluan bas itu diperpanjang hingga ke hospital daerah.
The bus route was extended as far as the district hospital.
Tarikh akhir penyertaan diperpanjang hingga 30 September.
The entry deadline was extended until 30 September.
Perbahasan tidak diperpanjang kerana semua pihak sudah bersetuju.
The debate was not prolonged because all parties had already agreed.
No one English gloss covers all three naturally. Translating the complete clause is more reliable than attaching extend permanently to diperpanjang.
Cepat: speed and earlier completion
With cepat, the affected participant is often itself an event or process: proses kelulusan, pembayaran, pemulihan, or pelaksanaan. The change may be greater rate, shorter waiting time, or earlier completion. Those interpretations overlap, but context usually identifies what has become “faster.”
Pembayaran balik dipercepat selepas kes itu mendapat perhatian umum.
The refund was expedited after the case received public attention.
Pemulihan pesakit tidak boleh dipercepat secara paksa.
A patient's recovery cannot be forcibly accelerated.
In the first example, expedited is idiomatic English; in the second, accelerated is better. The Malay verb has not changed affixes. Its base cepat combines with different kinds of processes.
Passive morphology can reveal an uncommon active base
Institutional writing (formal) often suppresses the actor because the procedure or result is what matters. Consequently, a learner may meet diperoleh, diperalat, or diperdaya before noticing their active counterparts memperoleh, memperalat, and memperdaya. The passive morphology still reveals the family, even though the meaning is no longer a simple scalar change.
Persetujuan bertulis mesti diperoleh sebelum data peribadi diproses.
Written consent must be obtained before personal data are processed.
Mereka sedar bahawa identiti mereka telah diperalat untuk meraih sokongan.
They realized that their identities had been exploited to gain support.
Mangsa diperdaya supaya memindahkan wang ke akaun lain.
The victim was deceived into transferring money to another account.
These words demonstrate three lexicalized readings:
- diperoleh: “be obtained,” not “be made more oleh”;
- diperalat: “be made into a means/tool” and hence “be exploited”;
- diperdaya: “be deceived; be outwitted,” not simply “be given more power.”
The general patient orientation remains: the consent is obtained, the identities are exploited, and the victim is deceived. What cannot be computed mechanically is the specific event supplied by each lexical family.
Productive schema versus lexicalized reading
The adjective core is relatively productive because scales naturally support “more X”: besar → diperbesar, luas → diperluas, tinggi → dipertinggi. Even there, the patient and context shape the reading. Skop diperluas means that more topics or cases are included; jalan diperlebar concerns physical width; mutu dipertinggi concerns an abstract standard.
Skop kajian diperluas untuk merangkumi sekolah luar bandar.
The scope of the study was broadened to include rural schools.
Dinding penahan itu dipertinggi sebanyak satu meter selepas banjir besar.
The retaining wall was raised by one metre after the major flood.
Lexical families are less predictable. Diperoleh is extremely common, but that frequency says nothing about whether another function word can take diper-. Diperalat has a conventional figurative reading that may be stronger than the literal “used as a tool.” A dictionary-listed whole word can therefore add meaning beyond the compositional pieces.
This is genuinely a mixed system. A purely grammatical account misses lexicalized meanings; a list of unrelated vocabulary misses the live passive and causative pattern. Advanced learners need both levels at once.
Why English translations fragment the network
English commonly uses enlarge, extend, expedite, raise, broaden, obtain, exploit, and deceive. Some appear as passives with be; others sound more natural with get in conversation. Malaysian Malay instead lets the base organize related active and passive forms.
Compare diperbesar in an image editor with enlarged, diperbesar for a controversy with blown out of proportion, and diperbesar for a military unit with expanded. Assigning only enlarged to the Malay word would conceal its figurative and institutional uses.
Register also affects translation without changing the morphology. Permohonan akan dipercepat is neutral-formal administrative language (formal). In a casual exchange (informal), English might say “They’ll hurry the application along,” while Malay speakers may paraphrase with Mereka akan cepatkan permohonan itu. The difference concerns discourse style, not a new fixed meaning for diper-.
Aspect and negation scope over the derived event rather than changing the family meaning. Belum diperpanjang says that the extension has not yet occurred; tidak akan dipercepat rejects a future acceleration; sudah diperbesar presents the enlargement as complete. The base still supplies length, speed, or size throughout. English may distribute these meanings across auxiliaries and participles, but Malay keeps the derived verb intact after the aspect or negation marker.
Common Mistakes
1. Translating every diper- form as “was made more.”
❌ Persetujuan itu 'dibuat lebih oleh' sebelum kajian bermula.
Incorrect interpretation — diperoleh means 'was obtained,' not 'was made more oleh.'
✅ Persetujuan bertulis diperoleh sebelum kajian bermula.
Written consent was obtained before the study began.
2. Losing the comparative change in a transparent adjective family.
❌ Imej itu diperbesar bermaksud imej itu memang besar dari awal.
Incorrect interpretation — diperbesar describes a change to a larger size.
✅ Imej kecil itu diperbesar sebelum dicetak.
The small image was enlarged before being printed.
3. Forcing one English verb onto every context.
❌ Tarikh akhir itu 'lengthened' hingga Jumaat.
Awkward English mapping — a deadline is normally 'extended,' although Malay uses diperpanjang.
✅ Tarikh akhir itu diperpanjang hingga Jumaat.
The deadline was extended until Friday.
4. Treating a lexicalized word as fully compositional.
❌ Dia diperdaya bermaksud dia dijadikan lebih berdaya.
Incorrect — diperdaya conventionally means 'was deceived.'
✅ Dia diperdaya oleh pemanggil yang menyamar sebagai pegawai bank.
He was deceived by a caller posing as a bank officer.
Key Takeaways
- Transparent diper- forms present an affected participant undergoing a scalar change.
- Diperbesar, diperpanjang, and dipercepat inherit different scales and therefore require different English verbs in context.
- Passive forms can make a family visible even when its active member is uncommon in the current discourse.
- Diperoleh, diperalat, and diperdaya retain passive orientation but have conventional lexical meanings.
- Learn diper- as a semantic network: a productive patient-oriented schema plus stored lexical families.
