diper-: Formation and Allomorphy in Malaysian Malay

The analytical prefix diper- forms passive verbs in families whose active member has memper-. Its spelling is stable: attach diper- directly to an established base and write the result as one word, as in diper- + besar → diperbesar. The hard part is therefore not choosing among many sound-conditioned variants, but knowing which bases conventionally enter this family in Malaysian Malay.

This page concentrates on formation and spelling. The meaning page explains the semantic network, while the usage page treats valency, lexicalization, and register. Throughout this page, a hyphen marks an abstract affix; real Malay words such as diperbesar never contain that hyphen.

The stable formation rule

Unlike meN-, diper- does not replace a root-initial consonant. The complete base stays visible after the prefix. This is true before b, p, c, l, and other initial sounds.

besar “big”diper- + besardiperbesarmemperbesar
panjang “long”diper- + panjangdiperpanjangmemperpanjang

Imej itu diperbesar supaya nombor pendaftaran dapat dibaca.

The image was enlarged so that the registration number could be read.

Tempoh pameran diperpanjang selama dua minggu.

The exhibition period was extended by two weeks.

Proses semakan dipercepat selepas dokumen lengkap diterima.

The review process was expedited after the complete documents were received.

Liputan internet akan diperluas ke kawasan pedalaman.

Internet coverage will be expanded to rural areas.

Benteng itu dipertinggi sebelum musim tengkujuh.

The embankment was raised before the monsoon season.

All five formations are written solid, and all five preserve every letter of the base. Thus panjang keeps its initial p and final ng in diperpanjang; cepat keeps both c and final t in dipercepat. A learner who expects the nasal alternations of meN- may be tempted to alter these consonants, but that other prefix’s rule does not operate here.

💡
To check the spelling, cover the first five letters of diperpanjang: the remainder is exactly panjang. This “recoverable base” test works for transparent members of the family.

Why diper- is one prefix, not di + a free-standing word

The first two letters resemble the preposition di “at, in, on,” but the spelling behavior is opposite. Prepositional di is written separately before a place phrase: di rumah, di pejabat, di kawasan pedalaman. Passive di- is a bound prefix, and diper- is its per--family counterpart; both are attached to the following base.

Gambar yang diperbesar itu dipamerkan di ruang legar.

The enlarged picture was displayed in the foyer.

The single sentence shows both surfaces: diperbesar is one derived verb, whereas di ruang legar is a prepositional phrase with a space. Writing di perbesar falsely treats perbesar as the complement of a place preposition.

English spelling provides little help here. English writes the independent auxiliary in was enlarged separately, but Malay can encode passive voice and derivational family in a single word. Do not copy English word boundaries into Malay morphology.

Relationship to memper- and per- families

For a transparent adjective family, the correspondence is straightforward:

besarmemperbesar “make larger” → diperbesar “be made larger”

The active prefix memper- identifies the actor-oriented member, while diper- identifies its third-person passive counterpart. The base and the causative or comparative idea remain; the voice changes. This relationship is why diper- can be described as the passive counterpart of memper-, not merely as an arbitrary longer version of di-.

Traditional descriptions also connect these forms with per-. In ordinary finite active clauses, however, bare per- is not freely substituted for memper-. A command may expose a bound form, but learners should build actual words from attested dictionary families, not by stripping mem- mechanically from every long verb.

Juruteknik memperbesar imej itu, lalu imej itu diperbesar sekali lagi oleh pegawai penyiasat.

The technician enlarged the image, and then the image was enlarged once more by the investigating officer.

Pihak universiti memperpanjang tempoh permohonan, jadi tempoh itu diperpanjang hingga Jumaat.

The university extended the application period, so the period was extended until Friday.

These pairs make the family relation visible without implying that speakers must produce the active form every time they use the passive.

Base category and lexical conditioning

Adjectives form the clearest productive core: besar, panjang, cepat, luas, and tinggi all describe a scale, and diper- places a patient at a greater point on that scale. Yet diper- is not an automatic prefix for every adjective. A logically imaginable meaning does not guarantee that Malaysian speakers use the resulting word.

Other categories occur in established lexical families. Alat “tool” gives memperalat and diperalat, with diperalat meaning “be used as a tool; be exploited.” Daya “power; means” gives memperdaya and diperdaya “be deceived.” The function word oleh participates in the highly lexicalized pair memperoleh “obtain” and diperoleh “be obtained.” These are real families, but they do not establish a productive rule saying that any noun or function word can follow diper-.

Remaja itu mendakwa bahawa dia telah diperalat oleh sindiket penipuan.

The teenager claimed that he had been exploited by a fraud syndicate.

Data awal diperoleh melalui temu bual dengan penduduk setempat.

The preliminary data were obtained through interviews with local residents.

In diperoleh, the sequence is historically and morphologically connected with the per- family, but its present meaning cannot be calculated as “made more oleh.” Dictionary organization is therefore essential: a Malaysian dictionary may place diperoleh under oleh, or show it among that base’s derivatives, even though the derived meaning is lexicalized.

💡
Use two checks before accepting a new form: the middle must be a real base, and the whole derivative must be an established Malaysian word. Passing only the first check is not enough.

What the formation rule does not license

The prefix does not by itself license an added -kan or -i. diper-, diper-...-kan, and diper-...-i are distinct patterns. With scalable adjectives, the standard family uses memperbesar / diperbesar, memperluas / diperluas, and mempercepat / dipercepat. Forms with a final suffix must be justified by their own base, meaning, and dictionary entry; the extra letters are not decorative variants.

Negation, aspect markers, and adverbs do not alter the internal spelling. Write belum diperbesar, sudah diperpanjang, and perlu dipercepat, with the independent marker before the single solid verb. A phrase such as lebih cepat is syntactic, but the letters cepat inside dipercepat are part of one derived word. Keeping these two levels apart prevents a learner from inserting spaces merely because the English translation uses several words.

Likewise, finding a passive form does not prove that its active counterpart is equally frequent in every register. Institutional prose (formal) readily uses diperoleh, diperluas, and dipercepat because the affected entity matters more than the actor. The formation remains valid even when the corresponding active verb is less salient in the immediate discourse.

Common Mistakes

1. Writing the analytical hyphen in a real word.

❌ Tempoh permohonan diper-panjang hingga Isnin.

Incorrect — the hyphen belongs only in morphological analysis.

✅ Tempoh permohonan diperpanjang hingga Isnin.

The application period was extended until Monday.

2. Separating di as though it were a place preposition.

❌ Gambar itu di perbesar untuk pameran.

Incorrect — diper- is attached to the base in this passive verb.

✅ Gambar itu diperbesar untuk pameran.

The picture was enlarged for the exhibition.

3. Applying nasal deletion to the base.

❌ Laluan itu dierpanjang sampai ke stesen baharu.

Incorrect — panjang keeps its initial p after diper-.

✅ Laluan itu diperpanjang sampai ke stesen baharu.

The route was extended to the new station.

4. Adding -kan automatically to an adjective family.

❌ Liputan perkhidmatan itu diperluaskan ke seluruh daerah.

Nonstandard for the prescriptive adjective pattern taught here — use diperluas.

✅ Liputan perkhidmatan itu diperluas ke seluruh daerah.

The service coverage was expanded throughout the district.

Key Takeaways

  • Write diper- with a hyphen only when naming or segmenting the prefix; write diperbesar and diperpanjang solid.
  • The base is preserved: besar, panjang, cepat, luas, and tinggi undergo no nasal replacement.
  • Transparent diper- verbs are passive family members corresponding to memper- verbs.
  • Scalable adjectives form the productive core, while forms such as diperalat, diperdaya, and diperoleh belong to established lexical families.
  • Never infer currency from spelling alone; verify unfamiliar derivatives in a Malaysian dictionary.
