ke-...-an Experiencer Constructions: Choosing This Construction

Choose an experiential ke-...-an construction when the clause is about a participant affected by excessive cold, loss, arrival, intrusion, or another low-control event. Choose a root/state clause, actor voice, di-, or ter- when discourse instead centers a property, mover, actor, patient, or result. These alternatives may describe the same real-world episode, but they are not pragmatically interchangeable: voice choice answers what the clause is about, not merely who caused the event.

This page is a decision guide. Formation begins in the ke-...-an overview; argument diagnostics, particle placement, and lexical edge cases are handled in the other pages of the series.

The first choice: property or affected experience

Compare a neutral property with the participant's excessive experience.

The air in the rear train car is very cold tonight.

I feel cold because I am sitting directly below the vent.

Saya kedinginan sampai tangan saya sulit digerakkan.

I am so cold that my hands are hard to move.

Dingin attributes a property to the air. Merasa dingin reports perception neutrally. Kedinginan packages the degree as uncomfortable and centers the experiencer's affected state. English I am cold leaves this threshold underspecified, so English speakers often underuse kedinginan or overuse it for a merely cold object.

The same distinction appears with size and flavor:

Koper ini besar, tetapi masih muat di bagasi.

This suitcase is big, but it still fits in the luggage compartment.

This suitcase is too large for the rack above the seat.

Tehnya kemanisan untuk diminum tanpa es.

The tea is too sweet to drink without ice.

The circumfixed predicate evaluates a contextual norm. It earns its place when excess or unsuitability matters to the discourse.

💡
Use ke-...-an excessive predicates for an affected threshold, not as decorative synonyms for ordinary adjectives.

The second choice: affected possessor or missing item

A loss can be centered on the person deprived of something or on the item that disappears.

Dia kehilangan dompet saat antre membeli kopi.

He/She lost a wallet while waiting in line to buy coffee.

His/Her wallet went missing while transferring from the bus to the train.

The first continues naturally with the person's reaction; the second supports a search narrative about the wallet.

Dia kehilangan paspor, lalu segera menghubungi kedutaan.

He/She lost a passport and then immediately contacted the embassy.

Paspornya hilang, tetapi salinannya masih tersimpan di ponsel.

His/Her passport is missing, but a copy is still stored on the phone.

If theft is known, di- supplies neutral patient voice and actor voice identifies the thief.

Dompet penumpang itu dicuri ketika pintu kereta terbuka.

The passenger's wallet was stolen when the train door opened.

Seorang pencopet mencuri dompet penumpang di dekat tangga.

A pickpocket stole a passenger's wallet near the stairs.

Kehilangan does not assert theft. It is the correct choice when deprivation is certain but cause is unknown—or when the person's loss, rather than the disappearance mechanism, drives the story.

Arrival: mover, affected goal, or visited patient

The ordinary motion clause makes the arriving person the subject. Kedatangan makes the receiving person, household, or institution the affected subject. Didatangi is a neutral passive of mendatangi and more readily construes the visitor as deliberately approaching a target.

Tiga tamu datang ketika rapat hampir selesai.

Three guests arrived when the meeting was almost over.

Kami kedatangan tamu ketika semua orang sudah bersiap pulang.

We had guests arrive when everyone was already preparing to leave.

Kami didatangi petugas yang meminta salinan izin usaha.

We were visited by an officer requesting a copy of the business permit.

The kedatangan version often conveys unexpectedness or practical impact, but surprise is a tendency rather than an obligatory meaning. A scheduled arrival can still be presented as an event in the host's domain.

Tomorrow our school will have an assessment team arrive from the province. (formal institutional context)

Nearest affected alternatives: ter-, di-, and kena

Some events offer a lexical ter-, di-, or kena alternative. Select by participant and stance, not by translating English get.

We got caught in the rain while walking from the bus stop to the lodging.

Kami terkena hujan deras selama pendakian tahap pertama.

We were exposed to heavy rain during the first stage of the hike. (careful)

Kami kena hujan pas baru keluar dari stasiun.

We got caught in the rain just after leaving the station. (informal)

Kehujanan is a conventional affected-experience predicate. Terkena hujan is careful and impact-oriented. Kena hujan is common in informal retelling. None is made “more passive” by English syntax.

For theft, participant selection is especially visible:

Nita kecurian sepeda pada malam pertama di rumah baru.

Nita had her bicycle stolen on her first night in the new house.

Sepeda Nita dicuri dari halaman belakang rumah.

Nita's bicycle was stolen from the backyard.

The ke-...-an subject is the affected owner; the di- subject is the stolen bicycle.

Definiteness and animacy are tendencies, not gates

Experiencer subjects are often definite and animate because conversation tracks known people.

Mira kehilangan kacamatanya lagi sebelum presentasi.

Mira lost her glasses again before the presentation.

We had two cousins arrive who had not been home for a long time.

Indefinite affected subjects are possible, especially in reports and generalizations.

Seorang wisatawan kehilangan dokumen perjalanan di terminal.

A tourist lost travel documents at the terminal.

Many hikers became dangerously cold because they brought inadequate clothing.

Inanimate subjects are also possible when a place, organization, or body part functions as an affected goal.

Ruang arsip kemasukan asap dari dapur sebelah.

Smoke got into the archive room from the kitchen next door.

Desa pesisir itu kedatangan kapal bantuan menjelang malam.

That coastal village had an aid ship arrive toward evening.

What matters is conceptual affectedness and topicality, not biological sentience alone.

Topicality: choose the participant the next sentence follows

The guest arrived with important news and then explained the situation to us.

Kami kedatangan tamu tak dikenal, lalu menelepon petugas keamanan.

An unknown guest arrived at our place, so we called security.

The first tracks the guest through two actions. The second tracks the hosts and their response. Both are grammatical descriptions of an arrival; only one fits each discourse chain smoothly.

💡
Look one clause ahead. If the narrative continues with what the host, owner, or experiencer does next, an affected ke-...-an subject often creates the strongest continuity.

One travel episode in three genres

The same evening can be narrated through different genre conventions. Each version contains the cold experiencer, a lost wallet, and an unexpected arrival.

Dialogue

A: Kenapa kalian belum tidur? B: Saya kedinginan, dia kehilangan dompet, lalu kami kedatangan tamu yang mengantar kartu identitasnya.

A: Why aren't you all asleep yet? B: I was freezing, he/she lost a wallet, and then someone arrived with the identity card. (informal dialogue)

The quick personal account favors direct affected predicates and omits institutional wording.

News sentence

Seorang peserta mengalami kedinginan, peserta lain kehilangan dompet, dan panitia kedatangan warga yang menemukan kartu identitas korban.

One participant suffered from the cold, another lost a wallet, and the committee had a resident arrive who had found the victim's identity card. (news style)

Edited news retains lexical kehilangan and possible institutional kedatangan, while mengalami kedinginan packages the medical condition more formally.

Personal narrative

That night I was freezing at the lodging, he/she lost a wallet at a food stall, and near midnight a visitor arrived who turned out to be returning it. (personal narrative)

The narrative uses all three affected viewpoints to organize the evening as a sequence of experiences. A police chronology would instead favor item-centered dompet ditemukan or actor-centered warga menemukan dompet.

Common Mistakes

Using kedinginan for a neutral object temperature

Wrong for a neutral temperature description — the bottle is not an affected experiencer here.

The water in that bottle is cold after being kept in the refrigerator.

Claiming theft when only loss is known

❌ Dompetnya dicuri, tetapi dia belum tahu apakah terjatuh atau diambil orang.

Logically inconsistent — dicuri already asserts that someone stole it.

✅ Dia kehilangan dompet, tetapi belum tahu penyebabnya.

He/She lost a wallet but does not yet know the cause.

Making the mover the subject of kedatangan

❌ Dua tamu kedatangan kami setelah toko tutup.

Incorrect role choice — the host domain is the subject of kedatangan.

✅ Dua tamu datang ke tempat kami setelah toko tutup.

Two guests came to our place after the shop closed.

Treating formal alternatives as identical in stance

❌ “Nita kecurian sepeda” selalu sama fokusnya dengan “Sepeda Nita dicuri”.

Incorrect analysis — the first centers Nita's misfortune; the second centers the bicycle.

✅ Nita kecurian sepeda, lalu meminta bantuan para tetangga.

Nita had her bicycle stolen, then asked the neighbors for help.

Assuming an indefinite experiencer is impossible

Incorrect — ke-...-an does not require a definite subject.

✅ Seorang penumpang kehilangan tas saat berganti bus.

A passenger lost a bag while changing buses.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose experiential ke-...-an when the affected participant or domain is the clause's discourse center.
  • Root adjectives describe properties; hilang centers a missing item; datang centers a mover; di- and actor voice center other participants.
  • Definiteness and animacy are strong discourse tendencies, not grammatical requirements.
  • Formally possible alternatives differ in topicality, causation, affectedness, and register.
  • Genre influences packaging, but the intended continuing topic remains the decisive guide.
