ter- Involuntary and Stative Voice: Choosing This Construction

Choose ter- when the clause is primarily about an attained state, an undergoer with reduced control, or a theme that becomes perceptible or achievable. Choose actor voice when an actor or causer and the action organize the message, and di- passive when the affected participant is central but an event remains in view.

These constructions can describe closely related situations, yet they are not interchangeable translations of one English sentence. Indonesian voice choice tells the listener what the clause is about. That discourse decision often matters more than whether English happens to use active voice, passive voice, or an adjective. The actor-voice choice guide develops the actor-centered side of this contrast.

The central three-way decision

Consider a door at opening time:

ConstructionExampleClause centersLikely question
meN- actor voicePetugas membuka pintu ituthe attendant's actionWhat did the attendant do?
di- passivePintu itu dibuka petugasan action affecting the doorWhat happened to the door?
ter- statePintunya terbukathe door's resulting conditionWhat is the door like now?

Petugas membuka pintu utama tepat pukul delapan.

The attendant opened the main door at exactly eight.

Pintu utama dibuka petugas tepat pukul delapan.

The main door was opened by the attendant at exactly eight.

Saat rombongan datang, pintu utama sudah terbuka.

When the group arrived, the main door was already open.

The first two clauses report a bounded opening event. The third reports the state visible at the reference time; it neither asserts who opened the door nor guarantees that anyone deliberately did so. English “was opened” and “was open” look similar, which makes this distinction easy to miss.

💡
Ask what would make the sentence newsworthy: the actor's deed, an event affecting the patient, or the state or outcome itself. That answer usually points to meN-, di-, or ter-.

When low control is the point

With an intransitive base such as jatuh, both the root and a ter- form can occur. The root jatuh neutrally names falling; terjatuh invites attention to the unplanned, sudden, or adverse experience. An active causative such as menjatuhkan introduces a causer and therefore changes valency.

Saya jatuh saat berlari ke halte.

I fell while running to the bus stop.

Saya terjatuh saat menginjak ubin yang licin.

I took a fall when I stepped on a slippery tile.

Dorongan dari belakang menjatuhkan saya.

A shove from behind knocked me down.

The first two can report the same physical event, but only the second linguistically foregrounds reduced control. The third makes a cause the subject. Do not choose terjatuh merely because the event occurred in the past: ter- is not tense marking.

Low control can be physical, cognitive, or situational.

Ia tertidur di kereta dan melewatkan stasiunnya.

She fell asleep on the train and missed her stop.

Nama lama itu tertulis lagi di formulir.

The old name ended up being written on the form again.

Ponsel saya terbawa sampai ke rumahnya.

My phone was accidentally taken all the way to his house.

The ter- choice can tactfully background responsibility, but it does not magically prove innocence. In an official account, Dokumen itu terhapus presents deletion as accidental or unintended; evidence might later show otherwise.

When perceptibility or feasibility is the point

Terbaca, terlihat, and terdengar make the writing, sight, or sound the grammatical center. The perceiver may be generic, irrelevant, or supplied only as a viewpoint. Actor voice centers a particular perceiver; di- passive presents an actual perception event affecting the theme.

Tulisan itu terbaca jelas setelah gambarnya diperbesar.

That writing became clearly legible after the image was enlarged.

Saya membaca tulisan itu setelah memperbesar gambarnya.

I read that writing after enlarging the image.

Tulisan itu dibaca oleh dua orang pemeriksa.

That writing was read by two examiners.

The ter- clause assesses a property or attainable endpoint. It need not entail that anyone completed a reading event. The actor-voice and passive clauses do assert readers and events.

Dari sini, puncak gunungnya terlihat jelas.

From here, the mountain peak is clearly visible.

Saya melihat puncak gunung itu dari balkon.

I saw that mountain peak from the balcony.

Gerak-geriknya dilihat oleh petugas keamanan.

His movements were seen by the security officer.

For ability under negation, compare a property of the material with a person's capacity:

Tulisan sekecil ini tidak terbaca tanpa kaca pembesar.

Writing this small is illegible without a magnifying glass.

Saya tidak bisa membaca tulisan sekecil ini tanpa kacamata.

I cannot read writing this small without my glasses.

Dokumen itu tidak dapat dibaca karena filenya rusak.

The document cannot be read because the file is corrupted. (formal)

Tidak terbaca is compact and result-centered. Tidak bisa membaca attributes inability to the reader. Tidak dapat dibaca is an explicit passive ability construction, common in (formal) technical and administrative writing; it presents the unavailable action rather than lexicalizing readability.

The same scene packaged three ways

The following contexts show why grammatical possibility is not pragmatic equivalence.

Dialogue: the open door

A: Kok ruangannya dingin? B: Pintunya terbuka.

A: Why is the room cold? B: The door is open.

A: Siapa yang membuka pintunya? B: Rafi yang membukanya.

A: Who opened the door? B: Rafi did.

A: Kapan pintunya dibuka? B: Tadi, oleh petugas keamanan.

A: When was the door opened? B: Earlier, by the security officer.

All three exchanges concern the door, but each answer fits a different question. Pintunya terbuka answers about the present state; Rafi membukanya identifies an actor; pintunya dibuka locates a deliberate event in time.

News: a fall at a station

Seorang pengunjung terjatuh di peron yang licin pada Jumat pagi.

A visitor fell on a slippery platform on Friday morning. (news register; low control foregrounded)

Seorang pengunjung jatuh di peron pada Jumat pagi.

A visitor fell on the platform on Friday morning. (neutral event report)

Dorongan massa menjatuhkan seorang pengunjung di peron.

Pressure from the crowd knocked a visitor down on the platform. (cause-centered report)

The indefinite seorang pengunjung is fully compatible with terjatuh. Indonesian does not require every ter- subject to be definite or already topical. News writing often introduces an affected participant this way because the mishap itself is the news.

Narrative: a voice in the corridor

Dari ujung lorong, suaranya terdengar samar-samar.

From the end of the corridor, her voice could be heard faintly.

Saya mendengar suaranya dari ujung lorong.

I heard her voice from the end of the corridor.

Suaranya saya dengar lagi ketika lampu padam.

I heard her voice again when the lights went out.

The first sentence lets the sound enter the scene without naming a hearer. The second makes the narrator-perceiver the subject. The third uses bare-verb object voice to keep suaranya as the topic while retaining saya as a specific perceiver. A ter- clause is therefore not the only way to begin with the theme.

💡
When a specific pronominal actor or perceiver must remain in the clause, bare-verb object voice often preserves a patient or theme topic more naturally than forcing that participant into a ter- construction.

Definiteness, animacy, and topicality

These are discourse tendencies, not mechanical licensing rules. A definite theme is a natural topic, so definite ter- subjects are frequent:

Pintunya terbuka, tetapi pemiliknya tidak ada.

The door is open, but the owner is not there.

Suaranya terdengar lebih tenang hari ini.

Her voice sounds calmer today.

An indefinite subject can instead introduce a new event or perception:

Tiba-tiba terdengar suara kaca pecah.

Suddenly, the sound of breaking glass was heard.

Di dekat pintu masuk, seorang anak terjatuh.

Near the entrance, a child fell.

The presentational order terdengar suara kaca pecah places the predicate before the newly introduced sound. This is a marked but natural narrative pattern, not evidence that the sound has become an object.

Animacy interacts with lexical meaning. Animate subjects readily undergo low-control events such as terjatuh and tertidur. Inanimate themes readily bear result states or perceptibility properties such as terbuka and terbaca. But no general rule bans an animate theme or an inanimate cause.

Nama ketiga calon itu sudah tertulis di papan.

The names of the three candidates are already written on the board.

Wajahnya terlihat lelah setelah penerbangan panjang.

He looks tired after the long flight.

Formal and colloquial preferences

Result and perceptibility ter- forms occur comfortably in conversation, journalism, and formal prose. Formal writing often chooses dapat + di- when it needs an explicitly compositional ability passive, while conversation favors concise ter- predicates where they are lexicalized.

Data dalam tabel tersebut dapat dibaca di laman resmi.

The data in that table can be read on the official website. (formal)

Angkanya enggak terbaca di layar saya.

I can't make out the number on my screen. (informal)

Enggak is (informal); tidak is neutral. The voice contrast itself is not a formal-versus-colloquial split. Terbaca is standard Indonesian, not a careless substitute for dibaca.

Common Mistakes

1. Using ter- for a deliberate actor-centered action

❌ Petugas terbuka pintu utama pukul delapan.

Incorrect—the attendant is a deliberate actor, so terbuka cannot take the intended direct object.

✅ Petugas membuka pintu utama pukul delapan.

The attendant opened the main door at eight.

2. Using di- to describe only a present state

❌ Hati-hati, pintunya dibuka sekarang.

Wrong for the intended warning that the door is currently open; dibuka reports an opening event.

✅ Hati-hati, pintunya terbuka sekarang.

Careful, the door is open now.

3. Putting the perceiver before a ter- ability predicate

❌ Saya tidak terbaca tulisan yang pudar itu.

Incorrect for ‘I cannot read that faded writing’—terbaca centers the writing.

✅ Saya tidak bisa membaca tulisan yang pudar itu.

I cannot read that faded writing.

4. Assuming every ter- form means an accident

❌ Suaranya terdengar tanpa sengaja dari ruang sebelah.

Misleading when only audibility is meant—tanpa sengaja needlessly forces an accidental interpretation.

✅ Suaranya terdengar dari ruang sebelah.

Her voice can be heard from the next room.

5. Letting definiteness dictate the voice

❌ Seorang pengunjung dijatuh di peron karena subjeknya tidak tentu.

Incorrect in form and reasoning—an indefinite subject does not require di-, and jatuh does not form this passive.

✅ Seorang pengunjung terjatuh di peron.

A visitor fell on the platform.

Key Takeaways

  • meN- centers an actor's action, di- centers a patient within an event, and ter- centers a result, low-control undergoer, or perceptible endpoint.
  • Jatuh, terjatuh, and menjatuhkan package different causal and discourse structures; they are not free stylistic variants.
  • Definite topics strongly favor theme-first clauses, but indefinite and newly introduced ter- subjects are also natural.
  • Perceptibility ter- can suppress a generic experiencer; active or object voice is better when a specific perceiver matters.
  • Voice selection follows clause aboutness, not an English active/passive label.
