Experiential ke-...-an predicates do not conjugate. Kedinginan, kehilangan, and kedatangan keep exactly the same form while separate preverbal particles build completion, progression, prospect, possibility, and negation: sudah kedinginan, sedang kedatangan tamu, akan kehilangan dompet, bisa kedinginan, tidak kehilangan, and belum kedatangan tamu. The difficult part is not spelling but scope and event type: a progressive must have an internal phase, while a prohibition normally requires some controllable preventive action.
This page covers particles only. The broader order of Indonesian preverbal markers appears in aspect and modal ordering; formation, arguments, discourse choice, and lexical ambiguity belong to the other pages in this series.
The unchanged-predicate template
The neutral order is:
subject + aspect / modal / negator + ke-...-an predicate (+ complement)
| Function | Anchor sequence | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| realized aspect | Saya sudah kedinginan. | the cold state has already become relevant |
| progressive aspect | Kami sedang kedatangan tamu. | the visit/arrival episode is under way |
| prospective | Dia akan kehilangan dompet. | the loss is predicted |
| possibility | Saya bisa kedinginan. | circumstances can produce the state |
| plain negation | Dia tidak kehilangan dompet. | the loss did not occur |
| not-yet negation | Kami belum kedatangan tamu. | an expected arrival has not occurred yet |
Saya sudah kedinginan sebelum petugas menutup jendela.
I was already freezing before the attendant closed the window.
Kami sedang kedatangan tamu dari cabang Surabaya.
We currently have guests arriving from the Surabaya branch.
He/She will lose that wallet if it keeps being carried in an open pocket.
A small child can become dangerously cold faster than an adult.
He/She did not lose the wallet; it had been left on the cashier's counter.
Kami belum kedatangan tamu yang dijadwalkan tiba siang tadi.
The guest scheduled to arrive this afternoon has not arrived at our place yet.
Every particle is a separate word. The voice-related circumfix remains attached around its base: ke-dingin-an is analysis only, while actual kedinginan is solid.
Sudah: the state or event is realized
Sudah says that the relevant transition, state, loss, or arrival has become real before a contextual reference point.
When aid arrived, the victims had already been starving for two days.
Nina only just realized that she had already lost her bank card.
This morning our office has already had three groups of participants arrive.
With states, sudah often highlights entry into the state or its current relevance rather than simple past time. Sudah kedinginan can mean βis already cold nowβ even without a past-time adverb.
Sedang: internal duration is required
Sedang views a situation during an accessible phase. Excessive states and extended visits readily allow this viewpoint.
Mereka sedang kedinginan di tenda yang bocor.
They are currently freezing in the leaking tent.
Sekolah kami sedang kedatangan rombongan dari tiga kabupaten.
Our school is currently receiving groups from three districts.
Perusahaan itu sedang kehilangan pelanggan sedikit demi sedikit.
That company is gradually losing customers.
A single moment of losing one wallet normally has no observable middle. Dia sedang kehilangan dompet is therefore poor for a completed discovery. Say dia sedang mencari dompet yang hilang if the search is ongoing, or dia sudah kehilangan dompet once the loss is established.
He/She is looking for the wallet that went missing near the ticket counter.
By the time he/she realized the mistake, access to that account had already been lost.
The progressive does become natural with a gradual or repeated theme, as in losing customers one by one. Aspect interacts with lexical event shape; it cannot force every predicate into duration.
Akan: prospect and prediction
Akan places the state or event after the reference point or presents it as a forecast. It is not a future suffix.
Tanpa selimut tambahan, para pendaki akan kedinginan menjelang subuh.
Without extra blankets, the hikers will be freezing toward dawn.
The company will lose that contract if it misses the deadline.
Tomorrow we will have a consultant arrive to inspect the security system.
Time adverbials can also establish futurity without akan in suitable contexts, but akan makes the prospective scope explicit.
Bisa: possibility, vulnerability, and opportunity
With affected predicates, bisa usually describes circumstances that make an outcome possible, not an intentional skill.
If you keep wearing wet clothes, you could become dangerously cold on the way.
We could lose important data if the backup is not updated.
This office could have hundreds of applicants arrive after registration opens.
The subject does not exercise an ability to suffer cold or loss. Bisa evaluates risk or circumstantial possibility. With kedatangan, the same modal can be neutral or welcome if the expected visitors are beneficial.
Tidak and belum have different temporal commitments
Tidak denies the predicate. Belum says it has not become true up to the reference point and normally keeps a later possibility open.
I am not cold because I have changed out of the wet clothes.
Saya belum kedinginan, tetapi suhu di luar terus turun.
I am not cold yet, but the temperature outside keeps dropping.
He/She did not lose the ticket; a friend kept it safe.
Dia belum kehilangan hak akses, tetapi akunnya sedang ditinjau.
He/She has not lost access rights yet, but the account is under review.
As of this afternoon, the courier carrying the original documents has not arrived at our place yet.
Plain kami tidak kedatangan tamu is possible only under a strong contrast, but it is less neutral than tidak ada tamu yang datang or kami tidak menerima tamu. Lexical convention affects which negative remains idiomatic.
No guests came to our office today.
Particle combinations and scope
Multiple particles form an ordered interpretation before the invariant predicate.
After drinking warm tea, I am no longer cold.
Dia belum pernah kehilangan dokumen sepenting ini.
He/She has never before lost a document this important.
Kami mungkin akan kedatangan tim tambahan pekan depan.
We may have an additional team arrive next week.
With the new procedure, the company will not lose records again.
Sudah tidak marks a transition into nonoccurrenceβoften βno longer.β Belum pernah means the experience has never occurred up to now. Tidak akan denies the prospective event, while reversing it to akan tidak is not the neutral order for this meaning.
Jangan and the control restriction
Jangan normally prohibits a controllable action. Cold, accidental loss, and unexpected arrival are not intentional acts of the affected subject, so Indonesian usually uses jangan sampai: prevent the unwanted result from coming about.
Jangan sampai kamu kedinginan; bawa pakaian ganti.
Don't let yourself get dangerously cold; bring a change of clothes.
Jangan sampai kehilangan tanda terima sebelum pengembalian dana selesai.
Make sure you don't lose the receipt before the refund is completed.
Jangan sampai kami kedatangan pemeriksa saat dokumennya belum siap.
Let's make sure an inspector does not arrive while the documents are not ready.
Direct jangan kedinginan sounds as though the experiencer can simply choose not to feel cold. Direct jangan kehilangan can work as an elliptical practical instruction when the addressee controls safeguarding the item, but jangan sampai remains more natural for the accidental outcome.
Bukan is contrastive, not ordinary verbal negation
Use tidak and belum for normal predicate negation. Bukan can reject one diagnosis in favor of another.
He/She did not lose the wallet; a younger sibling borrowed it.
Bukan kehilangan dompet, dia hanya lupa menaruhnya di laci mana.
It was not a matter of losing the wallet; he/she merely forgot which drawer it was in. (explicit correction)
The second is a contrastive bukan X fragment, not evidence that bukan is the default negator for kehilangan.
Common Mistakes
Moving the aspect marker after the predicate
β Saya kedinginan sudah sejak turun dari bus.
Incorrect neutral order β sudah precedes the ke-...-an predicate.
I had been cold since getting off the bus that night.
Forcing a progressive onto a punctual loss
β Ketika melapor, dia sedang kehilangan dompet dua jam sebelumnya.
Aspectually contradictory β the completed loss two hours earlier is not in progress at report time.
β Ketika melapor, dia sudah kehilangan dompetnya dua jam sebelumnya.
When reporting it, he/she had already lost the wallet two hours earlier.
Using bukan for ordinary predicate negation
β Kami bukan kedatangan tamu kemarin sore.
Incorrect as simple verbal negation β use a tidak clause or deny the arrival directly.
No guests came to our place yesterday afternoon.
Treating an uncontrolled state as a direct command
β Anak-anak, jangan kedinginan di dalam tenda!
Pragmatically unnatural β the children cannot directly choose the state.
β Anak-anak, jangan sampai kedinginan; pakailah jaket kalian.
Children, don't let yourselves get cold; put on your jackets.
Joining particles to the circumfixed predicate
β Perusahaan itu akankehilangan banyak pelanggan.
Incorrect spelling β akan is a separate preverbal particle.
The company will lose many customers if its service deteriorates.
Key Takeaways
- Kedinginan, kehilangan, and kedatangan remain uninflected; separate preverbal particles supply temporal, modal, and negative scope.
- Sudah marks realization, sedang requires internal duration, and akan makes a prospect explicit.
- Bisa commonly expresses vulnerability or circumstantial possibility, not deliberate ability.
- Tidak denies a predicate; belum keeps a later realization contextually open; bukan is only contrastive here.
- Use jangan sampai when prevention, rather than direct control of the affected state, is intended.
