ber- Intransitives, Reflexives, and Reciprocals: Advanced Constraints and Register

Advanced ber- requires distinguishing several superficially similar subject-centered predicates. Berjalan describes motion or progress, bersepeda an activity using a bicycle, berpakaian a subject's state of dress, bercukur a self-directed grooming event, and bersalaman a reciprocal greeting. These predicates usually do not license an ordinary affected object, so their behavior in relative clauses and questions differs sharply from transitive actor or passive voice.

This page focuses on extraction, lexical restrictions, omitted or nonagentive subjects, register, and realistic distribution. Formation, core arguments, voice choice, and aspect or negation belong to the other four pages in the ber- voice series.

Five subject-centered frames

Para peserta berjalan dari terminal ke balai kota.

The participants walk from the terminal to city hall.

Dua pegawai bersepeda ke kantor setiap Jumat.

Two employees cycle to the office every Friday.

Semua petugas berpakaian rapi untuk upacara.

All officers are neatly dressed for the ceremony.

Doni bercukur sebelum berangkat kerja.

Doni shaves before leaving for work.

Kedua delegasi bersalaman di depan kamera.

The two delegations shake hands in front of the cameras.

The walkers and cyclists perform activities; the officers bear a clothing-related state; Doni acts on his own body; the delegations participate mutually. In none of these neutral clauses is the noun associated with jalan, sepeda, pakaian, cukur, or salam an independent patient object waiting to be passivized.

πŸ’‘
Do not infer transitivity from an English translation. English ride a bicycle, wear clothes, and shake someone's hand can contain objects, while Indonesian packages the corresponding relation inside a subject-centered ber- predicate.

Subject relatives retain ber-

The subject can be the missing participant represented by a yang relative head.

Peserta yang berjalan paling depan membawa peta.

The participant walking at the front is carrying the map.

Pegawai yang bersepeda ke kantor itu tinggal dekat stasiun.

The employee who cycles to work lives near the station.

Petugas yang berpakaian serba putih akan memeriksa tiket.

The officer dressed entirely in white will check the tickets.

Pria yang sedang bercukur itu kakak saya.

The man who is shaving is my older brother.

Dua tamu yang bersalaman tadi ternyata pernah bekerja bersama.

The two guests who shook hands earlier turned out to have worked together before.

Each head noun corresponds to the selected subject inside its relative clause. No change to di- is needed because the relative is not extracting an affected object.

Actor-like subjecthood does not require volition. Rapat berjalan lancar and mesin berjalan normal have nonhuman subjects and no hidden actor.

Rapat yang berjalan lancar itu selesai lebih awal.

The meeting that proceeded smoothly ended early.

Mesin yang berjalan normal tidak perlu dibongkar.

A machine that is operating normally does not need to be dismantled.

Extraction limits expose incorporated relations

The bicycle in bersepeda is equipment incorporated into the activity concept, not an overt object. To ask which physical bicycle someone used, choose a transitive lexical verb.

Sepeda mana yang dipakai Rina ke kantor?

Which bicycle did Rina use to go to work?

Sepeda yang dikendarai Rina itu milik kakaknya.

The bicycle Rina rode belongs to her older sibling.

Sepeda yang Rina bersepeda is not a Standard Indonesian object relative. Similarly, berpakaian does not select a particular garment as object.

Seragam yang dikenakan petugas itu baru.

The uniform worn by the officer is new.

Petugas itu berpakaian seragam saat berjaga.

The officer wears a uniform while on duty.

The first sentence makes seragam the patient of transitive mengenakan. The second describes how the officer is dressed; seragam contributes the manner or type of clothing, not an ordinary passivizable object.

The same contrast applies to instruments of shaving:

Pisau cukur yang digunakan Doni sudah tumpul.

The razor Doni uses is already blunt.

Doni bercukur dengan pisau cukur lama.

Doni shaves with an old razor.

Instrument pisau cukur remains inside a dengan phrase. It cannot become the object of bercukur merely because English says use a razor.

Reciprocal participants and dengan

Plural bersalaman can encode mutual action without an overt object. A singular subject normally names the other participant with dengan.

Para pemain bersalaman setelah pertandingan.

The players shake hands after the match.

Maya bersalaman dengan ketua panitia sebelum duduk.

Maya shakes hands with the committee chair before sitting down.

Maya dan ketua panitia saling bersalaman sebelum acara.

Maya and the committee chair shake hands with each other before the event.

Saling can make reciprocity explicit, but bersalaman already strongly favors a reciprocal interpretation. The dengan participant is not a direct object. To make that person the head of a straightforward relative, Indonesian often chooses another lexical frame:

Ketua panitia yang disalami Maya tersenyum kepada wartawan.

The committee chair whom Maya greeted with a handshake smiled at the reporters.

Ketua panitia, yang dengannya Maya bersalaman, lalu membuka acara.

The committee chair, with whom Maya shook hands, then opened the event. (formal)

The yang dengannya construction is grammatical (formal) but heavier than transitive disalami. Changing the verb changes the argument frame; it is not merely rearranging the same words.

Reflexive meaning need not contain diri

Bercukur conventionally makes the subject the person shaved. Adding an ordinary object changes the frame and requires a transitive verb.

Doni bercukur di kamar mandi.

Doni shaves in the bathroom.

Doni mencukur adiknya sebelum pentas.

Doni shaves his younger sibling before the performance.

Adiknya dicukur Doni sebelum pentas.

His younger sibling is shaved by Doni before the performance.

Doni bercukur adiknya cannot mean that Doni shaves the sibling. The reflexive relationship is lexicalized in the ber- form; English speakers should not search for an overt pronoun equivalent to himself in every clause.

Other ber- forms are less strictly reflexive. Berhias often means adorn oneself, while context can specify assistance or a resulting appearance. The lexicon, not the prefix alone, decides.

Para penari berhias sejak sore untuk pertunjukan malam.

The dancers have been getting ready with makeup and adornment since the afternoon for the evening show.

Omitted subjects and genuinely agentless uses

Conversation can omit a recoverable subject.

A: Rina ke kantor naik apa? B: Bersepeda.

A: How is Rina getting to work? B: By bicycle. (informal; subject omitted)

A: Doni masih di kamar mandi? B: Iya, lagi bercukur.

A: Is Doni still in the bathroom? B: Yes, he's shaving. (informal; subject omitted)

The missing subjects remain understood. Other clauses are semantically agentless because the subject is an event, machine, process, or relationship rather than a deliberate doer.

Proses verifikasi berjalan lebih lambat dari perkiraan.

The verification process is proceeding more slowly than expected. (formal)

Hubungan kedua negara berkembang pesat dalam lima tahun terakhir.

Relations between the two countries have developed rapidly over the last five years. (formal)

These are intransitive predicates, not passives with suppressed agents. English may translate berkembang with an active form, while another language might use a reflexive or middle; that mismatch does not make Indonesian nonstandard.

Lexical exceptions resist mechanical analysis

Allomorphy and lexicalization produce high-frequency words whose behavior must be learned individually.

Kakak bekerja di laboratorium kampus.

My older sibling works in the campus laboratory.

Anak-anak belajar membaca peta sederhana.

The children learn to read a simple map.

Kami bertemu di luar gedung setelah rapat.

We met outside the building after the meeting.

Bus itu berhenti di depan pasar.

The bus stops in front of the market.

Bekerja uses be-, belajar exceptional bel-, and bertemu and berhenti have conventional meanings not safely derived by assigning one gloss to ber-. Berenang retains the root-initial r while losing prefix-final r. Morphological family resemblance does not erase lexical restrictions.

Annotated formal paragraph

Setelah berjalan dari terminal, para peserta bersepeda mengelilingi kawasan, lalu berpakaian resmi untuk upacara; beberapa peserta bercukur terlebih dahulu, dan seluruh delegasi bersalaman sebelum memasuki aula.

After walking from the terminal, the participants cycled around the area, then dressed formally for the ceremony; several participants shaved first, and all delegations shook hands before entering the hall. (formal)

Berjalan and bersepeda coordinate two modes of movement. Berpakaian resmi describes dress, not an action on an object pakaian. Bercukur has a self-directed reading, while plural bersalaman is reciprocal. The paragraph needs no passive to express these relations because each predicate tracks its own subject-centered event.

Colloquial exchange

A: Tadi kalian jalan atau naik sepeda? B: Aku naik sepeda. Habis itu ganti baju, cukur sebentar, terus salaman sama panitia.

A: Did you walk or ride bikes earlier? B: I rode a bike. After that I changed clothes, had a quick shave, then shook hands with the committee. (informal; Jakarta-influenced)

A: Tadi kalian berjalan atau bersepeda? B: Saya bersepeda. Setelah itu saya berpakaian rapi, bercukur sebentar, lalu bersalaman dengan panitia.

A: Did you walk or cycle earlier? B: I cycled. After that I dressed neatly, shaved briefly, then shook hands with the committee. (careful spoken)

Bare jalan, naik sepeda, ganti baju, cukur, and salaman sama are informal and especially associated with urban/Jakarta-influenced speech, though distribution varies. Full berjalan, bersepeda, berpakaian, bercukur, and bersalaman remain current in writing and careful conversation.

Corpus-realistic frequency varies by lexeme

Frequent ber- words such as berjalan, bekerja, belajar, bertemu, and berhasil occur abundantly across edited and spoken Indonesian. Full bersepeda is common in news, health advice, and careful speech, while conversation often chooses naik sepeda. Berpakaian is frequent in descriptions and regulations; pakai baju competes in speech. Bercukur and bersalaman likewise compete with local or colloquial alternatives.

Peserta wajib berpakaian sopan selama berada di ruang sidang.

Participants must dress appropriately while in the hearing room. (formal/regulatory)

Warga dianjurkan berjalan kaki atau bersepeda untuk perjalanan pendek.

Residents are encouraged to walk or cycle for short trips. (public-information style)

No responsible grammar can give one percentage for β€œdropping ber-.” Counts must separate individual words, genres, regions, and competing paraphrases.

Common Mistakes

Giving berjalan a direct route object

❌ Kami berjalan jalan sempit itu sampai ke pasar.

Incorrect neutral frame β€” berjalan does not take the route as a bare direct object.

βœ… Kami berjalan di sepanjang jalan sempit itu sampai ke pasar.

We walk along that narrow road to the market.

Treating the bicycle as the object of bersepeda

❌ Rina bersepeda sepeda baru milik kakaknya.

Incorrect β€” bersepeda packages cycling as an intransitive activity.

βœ… Rina mengendarai sepeda baru milik kakaknya.

Rina rides her older sibling's new bicycle.

Inventing a passive from berpakaian

❌ Seragam biru itu dipakaiani oleh petugas setiap Senin.

Incorrect coinage β€” berpakaian does not supply a transitive stem pakaiani for this passive.

βœ… Seragam biru itu dikenakan oleh petugas setiap Senin.

The blue uniform is worn by the officer every Monday.

Adding another patient after reflexive bercukur

❌ Doni bercukur adiknya sebelum pertunjukan.

Incorrect β€” bercukur makes Doni the person shaved.

βœ… Doni mencukur adiknya sebelum pertunjukan.

Doni shaves his younger sibling before the performance.

Omitting dengan before a singular reciprocal partner

❌ Maya bersalaman ketua panitia di depan aula.

Incorrect β€” the other participant follows dengan in this frame.

βœ… Maya bersalaman dengan ketua panitia di depan aula.

Maya shakes hands with the committee chair in front of the hall.

Key Takeaways

  • Most ber- predicates center one subject and do not license an ordinary affected object.
  • Subject relatives keep ber-; extracting equipment, clothing, instruments, or reciprocal partners often requires a different lexical frame.
  • Reflexive bercukur and reciprocal bersalaman encode participant relationships without obligatory English-style reflexive or reciprocal pronouns.
  • Omitted subjects are recovered from discourse, while nonhuman berjalan and berkembang can be genuinely nonagentive rather than passive.
  • Formal ber- forms and colloquial paraphrases coexist with lexeme-, genre-, and region-specific frequency.
