Choose a ber- predicate when the clause is primarily about what its subject is doing, using, wearing, or doing mutually—not about a separate object being affected. Mereka bersepeda presents cycling as their activity; mereka mengendarai sepeda itu presents a particular bicycle as the vehicle they operate. The real-world scene may overlap, but the discourse packaging differs.
This page focuses on that choice. The argument guide supplies the syntactic tests; formation, particle placement, and advanced lexical restrictions belong to the other pages in the series.
The central decision: activity or affected object?
The nearest alternatives are usually an actor-voice meN- clause and a patient-centered di- passive or object-voice clause.
| Construction | What the clause is about | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ber- | subject's activity, state, equipment, self-action, or mutual event | Rina bersepeda. |
| meN- | actor performing an action on a distinct object | Rina mengendarai sepeda itu. |
| di- / object voice | the affected or selected object as discourse center | Sepeda itu dikendarai Rina. |
Rina bersepeda ke kantor agar tidak terjebak macet.
Rina cycles to work so that she does not get stuck in traffic.
Rina mengendarai sepeda lipat milik kakaknya.
Rina rides her older sibling's folding bicycle.
Sepeda lipat itu dikendarai Rina untuk pertama kalinya.
That folding bicycle is ridden by Rina for the first time.
In the first sentence, the bicycle is built into the activity bersepeda and need not be identifiable. In the second and third, sepeda lipat itu is a distinct, definite participant. This is a tendency of event packaging, not a ban on definite subjects: Rina is fully definite in all three.
Walking: do not force a transitive partner
Berjalan profiles movement or the progress of an event. A casual bare jalan can express the same activity (informal), but menjalankan is a different transitive verb meaning operate, carry out, or cause to run.
Kami berjalan dari stasiun karena taksi sulit ditemukan.
We walk from the station because taxis are hard to find.
Kita jalan dari stasiun saja, ya.
Let's just walk from the station, okay? (informal)
Tim lapangan menjalankan rencana evakuasi sesuai prosedur.
The field team carries out the evacuation plan according to procedure. (formal)
Rencana evakuasi itu dijalankan oleh tim lapangan.
The evacuation plan is carried out by the field team. (formal)
The last two sentences do not present literal walking. Choosing a formally related meN- form changes the event and its valency. Morphological resemblance never guarantees pragmatic interchangeability.
Clothing: state or selected garment?
Berpakaian describes the subject's manner or state of dress. Memakai selects a garment or accessory as an object, while dipakai makes that item central.
Para pembawa acara berpakaian serba hitam.
The hosts are dressed entirely in black.
Sinta memakai kebaya pemberian neneknya.
Sinta is wearing the kebaya her grandmother gave her.
Kebaya itu hanya dipakai pada acara keluarga.
That kebaya is worn only at family events.
Serba hitam describes a style; kebaya pemberian neneknya is a particular, discourse-relevant garment. English uses wear in both, so English translation hides the Indonesian difference.
Grooming: subject-centered or explicitly affected body part?
Bercukur packages shaving as the subject's own grooming. Mencukur allows a beard, hair, person, or animal to be the explicit affected object. Mencukur diri is possible, but the explicit diri is more contrastive or emphatic than neutral bercukur.
Dimas bercukur sebelum wawancara kerja.
Dimas shaves before the job interview.
Dimas mencukur kumisnya sebelum wawancara kerja.
Dimas shaves his mustache before the job interview.
Kumis Dimas dicukur sangat tipis oleh tukang cukur.
Dimas's mustache is trimmed very thin by the barber.
Untuk peran itu, aktor tersebut memilih mencukur dirinya sendiri, bukan dicukur oleh penata rias.
For that role, the actor chose to shave himself rather than be shaved by the makeup artist. (contrastive)
Use bercukur for ordinary self-grooming. Choose the transitive family when the affected part, another person, or the contrastive self matters.
Reciprocal or one-directional action?
Bersalaman presents a handshake as a mutual event. Menyalami selects the person greeted; its actor remains structurally distinct from that person. The two descriptions can refer to the same encounter, but they answer different discourse questions.
Kedua calon bersalaman sebelum debat dimulai.
The two candidates shake hands before the debate begins.
Ketua panitia menyalami setiap peserta di pintu masuk.
The committee chair greets each participant at the entrance.
Setiap peserta disalami oleh ketua panitia.
Every participant is greeted by the committee chair.
In bersalaman, both participants must be animate enough to take part in the social act. In menyalami, the object is the greeted target and may be less agentive—for example, a sleepy child can be greeted without actively returning a formal greeting. Animacy therefore interacts with event type, not with a mechanical rule that ber- always takes animate subjects.
Rumah tua itu beratap seng dan berpintu kayu.
That old house has a zinc roof and a wooden door.
The inanimate house is a natural subject of possessive/characteristic ber- forms.
Topicality guides the choice
Indonesian voice choice helps speakers maintain a discourse topic. Once a person is established as topic, a ber- predicate continues with that person without introducing a competing patient. If a bicycle, garment, or greeted participant becomes the topic, a patient-centered transitive clause is more coherent.
Nadia baru pindah ke Bogor. Sekarang dia bersepeda ke kantor hampir setiap hari.
Nadia has just moved to Bogor. Now she cycles to work almost every day.
Sepeda tua itu baru selesai diperbaiki. Besok sepeda itu akan dikendarai Nadia ke kantor.
That old bicycle has just been repaired. Tomorrow it will be ridden by Nadia to work.
Pak Arif sudah siap berangkat. Beliau berpakaian rapi dan baru saja bercukur.
Mr. Arif is ready to leave. He is neatly dressed and has just shaved. (respectful)
The ber- predicates keep Pak Arif as topic. Replacing them with object-centered clauses would require introducing specific clothes or facial hair and would redirect the discourse.
One event in three discourse settings
Imagine a community bicycle event. The same sequence can be packaged differently for conversation, news, and narrative.
Dialogue (informal)
Kita berjalan dari gerbang ke lapangan, lalu bersepeda bareng, ya?
Let's walk from the gate to the field, then cycle together, okay? (informal)
Aku sudah berpakaian rapi dan bercukur; tinggal bersalaman sama tamu nanti.
I'm already neatly dressed and shaved; I just need to shake hands with the guests later. (informal)
The dialogue keeps kita/aku as the continuing topic. Casual sama replaces standard dengan in the second line.
News report (formal)
Ratusan peserta berjalan menuju garis awal sebelum bersepeda mengelilingi pusat kota.
Hundreds of participants walked toward the starting line before cycling around the city center. (formal)
Para panitia berpakaian serba putih, sedangkan perwakilan peserta bersalaman dengan wali kota.
The committee members were dressed entirely in white, while participant representatives shook hands with the mayor. (formal)
The report favors standard ber- forms and explicit participant groups. It presents activities and ceremonial relations, not individual bicycles or garments as affected objects.
Narrative
Arman berjalan pelan ke lapangan sambil menuntun sepedanya.
Arman walked slowly to the field while pushing his bicycle.
Setelah bersepeda sejauh dua puluh kilometer, ia masih berpakaian rapi meskipun tadi pagi terburu-buru bercukur.
After cycling twenty kilometers, he was still neatly dressed even though he had shaved in a hurry that morning.
Di panggung, ia tersenyum lalu bersalaman dengan wali kota.
On the stage, he smiled and then shook hands with the mayor.
The narrative keeps one animate protagonist as topic while moving through motion, equipment use, appearance, self-grooming, and reciprocity. That continuity is exactly what the ber- family handles well.
Common Mistakes
1. Choosing bersepeda when a particular bicycle is the object
❌ Saya bersepeda sepeda milik Rani karena sepeda saya rusak.
Incorrect—the particular borrowed bicycle needs an object-selecting verb.
✅ Saya mengendarai sepeda milik Rani karena sepeda saya rusak.
I ride Rani's bicycle because mine is broken.
2. Choosing transitive menjalankan for literal walking
❌ Kami menjalankan ke halte setelah makan siang.
Incorrect—menjalankan is transitive and does not mean simply ‘walk.’
✅ Kami berjalan ke halte setelah makan siang.
We walk to the bus stop after lunch.
3. Using berpakaian to select one definite garment
❌ Sinta berpakaian kebaya yang diberikan neneknya itu.
Awkward for selecting one particular garment—use memakai.
✅ Sinta memakai kebaya yang diberikan neneknya itu.
Sinta is wearing the kebaya that her grandmother gave her.
4. Using bercukur for someone else's hair
❌ Ibu bercukur rambut anaknya sebelum sekolah.
Incorrect—bercukur centers the grooming on its subject.
✅ Ibu mencukur rambut anaknya sebelum sekolah.
The mother cuts/shaves her child's hair before school.
5. Using a reciprocal form for a one-directional greeting
❌ Ketua panitia bersalaman setiap peserta di pintu.
Incorrect—the reciprocal partner requires dengan, or use menyalami for a selected greeted object.
✅ Ketua panitia menyalami setiap peserta di pintu.
The committee chair greets every participant at the door.
Key Takeaways
- Choose ber- when the subject's activity, condition, equipment, self-action, or mutual event is central.
- Choose meN- when an actor acts on a distinct object, and di- or object voice when that object is the discourse center.
- Definiteness and animacy influence how participants are packaged, but neither supplies a mechanical prefix rule.
- Bersepeda/mengendarai, berpakaian/memakai, bercukur/mencukur, and bersalaman/menyalami are related descriptions, not free synonyms.
- The best choice supports the topic that the surrounding discourse is already developing.
