The family around tinggal is a good demonstration of why Indonesian words cannot be selected by translating an English verb in isolation. The base can locate a person's residence or say what remains; meninggalkan profiles an actor leaving a place, person, or thing; tertinggal profiles something left behind; and peninggalan names a legacy or surviving object. Residence, remainder, departure, and residue belong to one family, but they use different clause structures.
This is a lexical guide to the established family. For the general formation of meN-...-kan, di-...-kan, ter-, and -an, follow the linked Word Formation and Voice pages rather than treating this one family as a universal model.
No person or tense paradigm
Tinggal is not an infinitive corresponding to English to live. It is an invariant predicate: the subject and separate time or aspect expressions tell you who and when.
| Frame | Indonesian | What carries the interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| first person | Saya tinggal di Bandung. | saya; no agreement ending |
| third person | Dia tinggal di Bandung. | dia; same predicate |
| plural | Mereka tinggal di Bandung. | mereka; same predicate |
| past | Dulu kami tinggal di Bandung. | dulu |
| ongoing | Kami masih tinggal di Bandung. | masih |
| future | Tahun depan kami akan tinggal di Bandung. | tahun depan and akan |
Saya tinggal di Bandung bersama kakak saya.
I live in Bandung with my older sibling.
Dulu mereka tinggal di rumah kontrakan dekat kampus.
They used to live in a rented house near campus.
Mulai bulan depan, Rina akan tinggal bersama bibinya.
Starting next month, Rina will live with her aunt.
There are no forms comparable to English lives, lived, or living. Masih and akan are separate words, never endings attached to tinggal.
Tinggal as residence
For βreside/live,β tinggal is intransitive. A place is normally introduced by locative di, a co-resident by bersama, and a period by selama. None is a direct object.
Kami tinggal di apartemen kecil dekat stasiun.
We live in a small apartment near the station.
Selama kuliah, Dimas tinggal bersama pamannya di Bogor.
During university, Dimas lives with his uncle in Bogor.
Anda akan tinggal di sini selama berapa malam?
How many nights will you be staying here?
Setelah menikah, mereka tetap tinggal di kota yang sama.
After getting married, they continued to live in the same city.
English uses live for a permanent home and stay for temporary lodging. Indonesian tinggal covers both; duration and context supply the difference. Menginap is more specific when an overnight stay itself matters.
Kami menginap satu malam di Cirebon sebelum melanjutkan perjalanan.
We stayed overnight in Cirebon before continuing the journey.
Tinggal as what remains
In the remainder reading, tinggal means βbe left/remain.β The remaining item or amount may precede it as topic or follow it in a presentational order. This is not a residence use and does not require locative di.
Kursinya tinggal dua, jadi sebaiknya kita pesan sekarang.
Only two seats are left, so we should book now.
Setelah semua tagihan dibayar, uang saya tinggal sedikit.
After all the bills were paid, I had only a little money left.
Di lemari tinggal satu botol air.
There is only one bottle of water left in the cupboard.
Waktunya tinggal sepuluh menit sebelum loket tutup.
Only ten minutes remain before the counter closes.
The frequent pattern tinggal + action means βall that remains is to...β or, in instructions, βyou just need to....β The action may be a bare familiar verb or a fully prefixed verb according to its ordinary grammar.
Formulirnya sudah lengkap; tinggal tanda tangan di bagian bawah.
The form is complete; all you need to do is sign at the bottom. (informal)
Semua data sudah terkumpul; kami tinggal menunggu persetujuan direktur.
All the data has been collected; we only need to wait for the director's approval.
Tinggal tekan tombol hijau, lalu pintunya akan terbuka.
Just press the green button, and the door will open. (informal instruction)
This construction is common in speech and practical instructions (informal to neutral). It presents the action as the final uncomplicated step, not as an entity that resides somewhere.
Meninggalkan: an actor departs or leaves something
Meninggalkan is transitive. Its subject is the actor or source of departure, and its direct object is the place, person, thing, practice, or abstract trace left behind.
Rombongan itu meninggalkan hotel sebelum matahari terbit.
The group left the hotel before sunrise.
Jangan meninggalkan tas tanpa pengawasan di ruang tunggu.
Do not leave your bag unattended in the waiting room.
Ia meninggalkan pekerjaannya untuk merawat orang tuanya.
He/She left the job to care for his/her parents.
Pertemuan singkat itu meninggalkan kesan yang mendalam.
That brief meeting left a deep impression.
Kakek meninggalkan beberapa surat untuk cucu-cucunya.
Grandfather left several letters for his grandchildren.
The shared family connection is visible, but modern meninggalkan must be learned as a complete lexical verb. It does not always transparently mean βcause to remain.β Its object can be the point of departure (meninggalkan hotel), an abandoned theme (meninggalkan tas), a relinquished role, or a resulting trace (meninggalkan kesan).
Meninggalkan dunia is a respectful euphemism for dying (formal). Do not confuse it with meninggal, the ordinary polite verb βdie,β which is a different established member of the larger lexical network.
Tokoh pendidikan itu meninggalkan dunia pada usia delapan puluh tahun.
The education figure passed away at the age of eighty. (formal euphemism)
Ditinggalkan: the left participant becomes the topic
Ditinggalkan is the di- counterpart of meninggalkan. It centers the place, person, or thing affected by the departure; the actor may follow directly or with oleh, or remain unexpressed.
Rumah itu ditinggalkan penghuninya setelah banjir besar.
The house was abandoned by its occupants after the major flood.
Anjing itu ditinggalkan di depan klinik pada malam hari.
The dog was left in front of the clinic at night.
Desa tersebut telah lama ditinggalkan oleh sebagian besar penduduknya.
The village has long been left by most of its residents. (formal)
The spelling contrast is meaningful: passive ditinggalkan is one word, whereas locative di depan klinik and di desa are two. Telah is also separate because it is an aspect marker, not part of the verb.
Tertinggal: a left-behind result
Tertinggal usually profiles the theme that has ended up behind, forgotten, or lagging. It often suggests reduced control, but it is not merely another passive of meninggalkan.
Barang saya tertinggal di kereta tadi pagi.
My belongings were left behind on the train this morning.
Ponselmu tertinggal di meja kasir.
Your phone was left on the cashier's counter.
Tim tuan rumah tertinggal dua gol pada babak pertama.
The home team was two goals behind in the first half.
Daerah terpencil tidak boleh tertinggal dalam akses pendidikan.
Remote areas must not be left behind in access to education. (formal)
Compare the viewpoints:
Rafi meninggalkan payungnya di kafe.
Rafi left his umbrella at the cafe. (Rafi as actor)
Payung Rafi tertinggal di kafe.
Rafi's umbrella was left behind at the cafe. (umbrella as resulting theme)
Payung itu ditinggalkan Rafi karena sudah rusak.
The umbrella was left by Rafi because it was already broken. (deliberate passive event)
The last sentence supports a deliberate actor; tertinggal naturally presents the result without making that deliberate leaving central. The broader contrast is developed in the overview of ter- voice.
Peninggalan: legacy, inheritance, or historical remains
Peninggalan is a noun. It can denote something left by a person, inherited property, or a surviving object from an earlier period. The meaning is lexicalized: not every object of meninggalkan automatically becomes a natural peninggalan.
Jam tangan ini merupakan peninggalan kakek saya.
This watch is a keepsake from my grandfather.
Museum itu menyimpan berbagai peninggalan kerajaan kuno.
The museum houses various remains from an ancient kingdom.
Anak-anaknya sedang mengurus harta peninggalan almarhum.
His children are handling the deceased's estate. (formal)
Candi itu adalah peninggalan sejarah yang dilindungi negara.
That temple is a protected historical relic.
The possessor or source normally follows: peninggalan kakek, peninggalan kerajaan, or peninggalan dari masa kolonial. General peN-...-an formation is productive, but the senses and collocations of peninggalan must be learned as vocabulary.
Common Mistakes
1. Omitting di with residence
β Saya tinggal Bandung sejak tahun lalu.
Incorrect β the residence location normally needs locative di.
β Saya tinggal di Bandung sejak tahun lalu.
I have lived in Bandung since last year.
2. Giving the invariant base an English-style ending
β Dia tinggals bersama neneknya.
Incorrect β Indonesian verbs do not take a third-person singular ending.
β Dia tinggal bersama neneknya.
He/She lives with his/her grandmother.
3. Using the residence predicate for transitive leave
β Tolong jangan tinggal dompetmu di mobil.
Incorrect β leaving an object requires the transitive family member.
β Tolong jangan meninggalkan dompetmu di mobil.
Please do not leave your wallet in the car.
4. Splitting the passive prefix
β Gedung itu di tinggalkan setelah gempa.
Incorrect spelling β passive di- attaches to the verb.
β Gedung itu ditinggalkan setelah gempa.
The building was abandoned after the earthquake.
5. Treating tertinggal as a deliberate passive
β Surat itu tertinggal kurir di meja karena memang tidak diperlukan.
Incorrect for a deliberate actor-oriented leaving event.
β Surat itu ditinggalkan kurir di meja karena memang tidak diperlukan.
The letter was left by the courier on the table because it was not needed.
