temu, bertemu, and menemukan: Verb Family and Usage

The base temu underlies several high-frequency verbs, but the affixes divide the meanings sharply. Bertemu presents a mutual encounter, menemui presents someone as the goal of a visit or encounter, menemukan presents something as discovered, and mempertemukan means causing two sides to meet. English meet and find obscure this organization, so learn each form with its argument structure.

No form changes for person, number, or tense. The affixes distinguish lexical and syntactic perspectives; separate aspect and time words locate the event.

I met an old friend at the station this morning.

Yesterday we went to see the doctor to discuss the test results.

Tomorrow the team will find a new way to save energy.

English changes meet to met and find to found. Indonesian keeps bertemu, menemui, or menemukan, then supplies time separately.

Temu is not an infinitive

Bare temu is not the ordinary conversational verb to meet. It survives productively inside derivatives and occurs as a noun-like element in established compounds, especially (formal) event names and fixed phrases.

Balai desa menjadi tempat temu warga setelah banjir.

The village hall became a meeting place for residents after the flood.

That scientific meeting brought together researchers from six universities. (formal)

The two proposals have one important point of agreement.

I have made an appointment with the dentist for Monday.

These are lexicalized compounds: tempat temu, temu ilmiah, titik temu, and janji temu. For an ordinary finite clause, choose a derived predicate rather than treating temu as an English-style infinitive.

Bertemu: participants come into an encounter

Bertemu is an intransitive, often reciprocal predicate. The subject can be plural, with all participants included, or one participant can be subject and the other introduced by dengan.

Kami bertemu setiap Jumat untuk membahas perkembangan proyek.

We meet every Friday to discuss the project's progress.

Rina will meet with the prospective tenant later this afternoon.

Dua delegasi itu akhirnya bertemu setelah berbulan-bulan berunding.

The two delegations finally met after months of negotiations.

I first met Mr. Surya while working in Bandung.

Direct bertemu + person is also widespread, especially in speech, as the last example shows. Bertemu dengan makes the comitative relation explicit and is a reliable neutral pattern. Neither structure makes the other participant a direct object in the same way as menemui. The broader reciprocal and intransitive contribution of the prefix appears in the ber- meaning guide.

A place follows di, a planned purpose often follows untuk, and a time expression remains independent.

Mari bertemu di depan perpustakaan setelah makan siang.

Let's meet in front of the library after lunch.

Para pengurus bertemu untuk menyusun jadwal kegiatan tahunan.

The committee members met to draw up the annual activity schedule.

Because bertemu is intransitive/reciprocal, it does not form an ordinary di- passive. To make one visited person the selected object, use menemui.

πŸ’‘
With bertemu, participants converge in one encounter; neither is grammatically presented as the destination-object of the other. That is why ordinary passive voice is unavailable.

Menemui: go to see or encounter a selected participant

Menemui is transitive. Its object is the person, group, official, or situation reached by the subject. It often implies a deliberate visit, audience, consultation, or approaching someone to speak.

Setelah rapat, saya menemui ketua panitia di ruang kerjanya.

After the meeting, I went to see the committee chair in her office.

The journalist tried to meet the witness who lives in the neighboring village.

Silakan menemui petugas layanan jika kartu Anda tidak berfungsi.

Please see a service officer if your card does not work.

Menteri menemui perwakilan nelayan selama hampir dua jam.

The minister met representatives of the fishers for nearly two hours.

The corresponding passive ditemui makes the visited or encountered participant central.

The group leader has already been visited by two parents.

Dokter itu sulit ditemui tanpa membuat janji terlebih dahulu.

That doctor is difficult to see without making an appointment first.

Menemui also occurs with abstract difficulties or conditions, especially in careful or (formal) prose: menemui kendala, menemui kesulitan.

The project encountered an obstacle when the environmental permit had not yet been issued.

This is an established extension; not every English use of encounter automatically selects menemui.

Menemukan: find or discover

Menemukan is transitive and selects what becomes known, located, or discovered. The subject need not have been deliberately searching: someone can menemukan something by chance.

Petugas kebersihan menemukan dompet di bawah kursi tunggu.

The cleaner found a wallet under the waiting-room chair.

The researchers found the same pattern in three age groups.

Akhirnya saya menemukan kafe yang buka sebelum pukul tujuh.

I finally found a cafΓ© that opens before seven.

While emptying the cupboard, we found a long-lost family photograph.

Compare process and result: mencari is to look for; menemukan is to find. Searching does not entail success, while finding presents the discovery as achieved.

Kami mencari dokumen itu sepanjang pagi, tetapi belum menemukannya.

We looked for that document all morning but have not found it yet.

Passive ditemukan foregrounds the thing or fact discovered. It is common in reports, news, research, and descriptions.

Kebocoran kecil ditemukan di pipa belakang dapur.

A small leak was found in the pipe behind the kitchen.

The species was first discovered on that remote island.

Tidak ditemukan bukti bahwa data sengaja diubah.

No evidence was found that the data had been deliberately altered. (formal)

Write passive di- solid in ditemukan, but locative di separately in di pipa.

πŸ’‘
Mencari profiles an attempt; menemukan profiles the achieved discovery. English β€œfind” sometimes means judge or experience, so choose menemukan only when the Indonesian discovery/result perspective fits.

Mempertemukan: cause parties to meet

Mempertemukan is causative and transitive. Its subject is a person, event, system, or circumstance that brings one selected participant together with another, normally introduced by dengan.

Pameran kerja mempertemukan lulusan baru dengan calon pemberi kerja.

The job fair brings new graduates together with prospective employers.

The mediator brought the landowner together with residents' representatives.

A shared love of music brought them together in a small community.

This application is designed to connect farmers directly with buyers, without intermediaries.

Passive dipertemukan makes the brought-together participant central.

Kedua saksi dipertemukan untuk memastikan urutan kejadiannya.

The two witnesses were brought together to establish the sequence of events.

I was connected with the right mentor early in my career.

The affix sequence is written solid: mempertemukan, dipertemukan. This construction explicitly adds a causer, unlike reciprocal bertemu.

Pertemuan and temuan

Pertemuan names a planned meeting, an encounter, or the point at which things meet. Its interpretation comes from the participants and context.

Pertemuan bulanan dipindahkan ke hari Kamis.

The monthly meeting was moved to Thursday.

That brief encounter at the airport changed our travel plans.

Catatan pertemuan akan dibagikan kepada seluruh anggota.

The meeting notes will be shared with all members.

Temuan is another established noun meaning a finding or something discovered, particularly in research, audits, inspections, and reports (formal).

The main finding of this study concerns water quality. (academic)

Auditor meminta tanggapan tertulis atas setiap temuan.

The auditor requested a written response to each finding. (formal)

Pertemuan profiles a meeting event; temuan profiles a discovery. Their meanings are not interchangeable despite the shared base.

Common Mistakes

Treating temu as a general infinitive

❌ Saya ingin temu manajer hotel sore ini.

Incorrect in standard Indonesian β€” bare temu is not the ordinary verb β€˜to meet’.

βœ… Saya ingin menemui manajer hotel sore ini.

I want to see the hotel manager this afternoon.

Using bertemu for a discovered object

❌ Saya bertemu kunci kamar di bawah tempat tidur.

Incorrect β€” bertemu describes an encounter, not finding a lost object this way.

βœ… Saya menemukan kunci kamar di bawah tempat tidur.

I found the room key under the bed.

Adding a direct passive to bertemu

❌ Direktur itu dibertemu oleh para pegawai.

Incorrect β€” reciprocal/intransitive bertemu does not form this di- passive.

The director was visited by the employees after the meeting.

Omitting the selected object after mempertemukan

❌ Acara itu mempertemukan dengan banyak calon mitra.

Incorrect β€” mempertemukan is transitive and needs the first brought-together participant.

The event brings small-business owners together with many prospective partners.
