The cinta family covers love, deep attachment, and devotion, but register is distributed unevenly across its members. Bare cinta is a noun or a state predicate, mencintai is an active transitive verb, dicintai is passive, tercinta means “beloved,” and kecintaan names sustained love or devotion. Everyday speakers also use sayang, so translating every English “love” with the same member of this family will sound unnatural.
No conjugation for person or tense
Neither cinta nor mencintai changes with its subject or time. Indonesian expresses time through context and separate time or aspect words.
| Context | Indonesian pattern | What marks time |
|---|---|---|
| I, now | saya mencintai keluarga saya | context |
| she, continuing | dia masih mencintai keluarganya | masih |
| they, formerly | dulu mereka mencintai kota itu | dulu |
Ia mencintai keluarganya dan selalu menyediakan waktu untuk mereka.
She loves her family and always makes time for them.
Dulu ia mencintai kota itu, tetapi kini ia merasa asing di sana.
She used to love that city, but now she feels like a stranger there.
Kami akan selalu mencintai rumah sederhana tempat kami dibesarkan.
We will always love the modest home where we were raised.
Mencintai is not a present-tense conjugation of an Indonesian infinitive. It is a derived verb with its own transitive frame. General -i formation belongs to the word-formation guide.
cinta as a noun
As a noun, cinta refers to love itself. It combines naturally with possessors, descriptive modifiers, and established compounds such as cinta pertama, surat cinta, and cinta tanah air.
Cinta mereka tumbuh perlahan setelah bertahun-tahun berteman.
Their love grew slowly after years of friendship.
Ia masih menyimpan surat cinta dari masa kuliah.
She still keeps a love letter from her university days.
Sekolah itu menanamkan cinta tanah air tanpa merendahkan bangsa lain.
The school instills love of country without disparaging other nations.
Novel tersebut bercerita tentang cinta pertama yang tidak terlupakan.
The novel tells of an unforgettable first love.
The fixed expression jatuh cinta pada/kepada seseorang means “fall in love with someone.” Pada is common and neutral; kepada is possible, particularly when the person is emphasized.
Mereka jatuh cinta pada kota kecil itu sejak kunjungan pertama.
They fell in love with that small town on their first visit.
Raka jatuh cinta kepada sahabatnya sendiri.
Raka fell in love with his own friend.
cinta as a state predicate
Bare cinta can function as a predicate before the loved person, place, or ideal. It is direct and emotionally strong. In conversation it is especially familiar from intimate declarations, slogans, songs, and expressive statements.
Saya cinta Indonesia, termasuk keragaman bahasa dan budayanya.
I love Indonesia, including its linguistic and cultural diversity.
Aku cinta kamu, tetapi kita tetap harus jujur satu sama lain.
I love you, but we still have to be honest with each other. (informal)
Dia sangat cinta pada pekerjaannya, meskipun jam kerjanya panjang.
She deeply loves her work, even though the hours are long.
For ordinary warmth between family members or partners, sayang is often more conversational: Aku sayang kamu may sound tender and everyday, while Aku cinta kamu feels stronger, more explicit, or more dramatic. Bare cinta for a mild preference such as coffee is normally hyperbole; neutral preference uses suka.
mencintai: an active transitive verb
Mencintai takes a direct object and presents the lover as actor. It is current Standard Indonesian, common in careful personal statements, essays, speeches, journalism, literature, and lyrics. In very casual interaction, bare cinta or sayang may sound less formal.
Kita dapat mencintai negeri ini sambil tetap mengkritik pemerintahnya.
We can love this country while still criticizing its government.
Ayah mengajarkan kami untuk mencintai pekerjaan kami dan melakukannya dengan jujur.
Dad taught us to love our work and do it honestly.
Ia mencintai bahasa ibunya dan aktif mengajarkannya kepada anak-anak.
She loves her mother tongue and actively teaches it to children.
Mencintai seseorang tidak berarti menyetujui semua tindakannya.
Loving someone does not mean approving every action they take.
Mencintai normally selects a person, entity, cause, or noun-like object. For enjoying an activity, everyday Indonesian prefers suka + verb rather than mencintai + plain verb.
Saya sangat suka berenang sebelum bekerja.
I really like swimming before work.
Ia mencintai olahraga renang sejak menjadi atlet muda.
She has loved the sport of swimming since she was a young athlete.
The second example makes olahraga renang a noun-like object, which suits mencintai.
dicintai: the loved person or thing as pivot
Dicintai is the di- passive. It centers the loved person or entity, while the lover can follow oleh or remain unstated. It is common in personal reflection as well as elevated public language.
Setiap anak berhak merasa aman dan dicintai.
Every child has the right to feel safe and loved.
Penyanyi itu dicintai penggemarnya karena tetap rendah hati.
That singer is loved by her fans because she remains humble.
Kota ini dicintai oleh warganya, tetapi masih menghadapi banyak masalah.
This city is loved by its residents, but it still faces many problems.
Ia ingin dikenang sebagai guru yang tegas dan dicintai murid.
He wants to be remembered as a firm teacher who was loved by his students.
Write passive di- solid: dicintai. Locative di is separate in di rumah or di sekolah.
Anak yang dicintai itu tumbuh di rumah yang penuh kehangatan.
That beloved child grew up in a home full of warmth.
tercinta: “beloved” and “dearest”
Tercinta is an established modifier meaning “beloved” or “dearest.” It commonly follows a noun: ibu tercinta, keluarga tercinta, tanah air tercinta. It is emotionally elevated and frequent in dedications, condolences, ceremonial speech, advertising, and literary language; it may sound grander than ordinary conversation.
Untuk ibu tercinta, terima kasih atas kesabaran yang tidak pernah habis.
For my beloved mother, thank you for your endless patience.
Ia akhirnya kembali ke kampung halamannya yang tercinta.
He finally returned to his beloved hometown.
Selamat tidur, keluarga tercinta; besok kita berangkat pagi.
Sleep well, dear family; tomorrow we leave early.
Pidato itu ditutup dengan seruan untuk menjaga tanah air tercinta.
The speech ended with an appeal to protect the beloved homeland. (formal)
Although ter- elsewhere can mark a superlative, tercinta should not be mechanically read as “most loved” in every context. It is a conventional affectionate epithet. Learn its register and collocations as part of the lexical family.
kecintaan: love as devotion or sustained interest
Kecintaan is an abstract noun meaning deep love, devotion, or strong fondness. It is common in biographies, profiles, essays, speeches, and academic or formal prose. It frequently takes pada, kepada, or terhadap, depending on style and the complement.
Kecintaannya pada sastra tumbuh dari kebiasaan membaca bersama nenek.
Her love of literature grew from the habit of reading with her grandmother.
Kecintaan warga terhadap sungai itu mendorong gerakan pembersihan.
Residents' love for the river inspired a cleanup movement.
Pelatih menularkan kecintaannya pada olahraga kepada para pemain muda.
The coach passed on his/her love of sport to the young players.
Museum ini lahir dari kecintaan pendirinya pada sejarah lokal.
This museum grew out of its founder's love of local history.
In the third example, pada olahraga marks the object of affection, while kepada para pemain muda marks the recipients. This division avoids a stylistically heavy repetition of kepada; it does not make kecintaan kepada ungrammatical in other frames.
Aspect, negation, and intensity
State-like love normally does not need sedang. Use separate masih, sudah tidak, tidak lagi, semakin, or time phrases to shape its course. These words never fuse with the verb.
Mereka masih saling mencintai setelah melewati masa yang sulit.
They still love each other after going through a difficult period.
Ia tidak lagi mencintai pekerjaannya seperti dahulu.
She no longer loves her job as she once did.
Saya semakin mencintai kota ini setelah mengenal warganya.
I love this city more and more after getting to know its residents.
Dia tidak mencintai saya, dan saya harus menerima kenyataan itu.
He doesn't love me, and I have to accept that reality.
Common Mistakes
Using cinta for an ordinary preference
❌ Saya cinta kopi yang tidak terlalu manis.
Overstrong in a neutral context — cinta sounds like passionate love or deliberate hyperbole.
✅ Saya suka kopi yang tidak terlalu manis.
I like coffee that isn't too sweet.
Putting a plain activity after mencintai
❌ Mereka mencintai mendaki setiap akhir pekan.
Unnatural — mencintai normally takes a noun-like object, not a plain activity predicate.
✅ Mereka suka mendaki setiap akhir pekan.
They like hiking every weekend.
Separating passive di-
❌ Pemimpin itu di cintai banyak orang.
Incorrect — passive di- is attached to the verb.
✅ Pemimpin itu dicintai banyak orang.
That leader is loved by many people.
Splitting tercinta
❌ Hadiah ini untuk nenek ter cinta.
Incorrect — tercinta is one established solid word.
✅ Hadiah ini untuk nenek tercinta.
This gift is for my beloved grandmother.
Adding tense or agreement morphology
❌ Dulu mereka mencintai-ed rumah itu.
Incorrect — Indonesian verbs do not take English past-tense or agreement endings.
✅ Dulu mereka mencintai rumah itu.
They used to love that house.
