mengapa, kenapa, and kok

Indonesian has several ways to ask for a reason, and they do more than leave a causal slot blank. Mengapa frames a neutral or formal inquiry, kenapa is the everyday conversational choice, and kok presents the situation as surprising, contrary to expectation, or sometimes objectionable. The same event can therefore be questioned with a different social stance.

English why does not encode these differences as clearly. Choosing the nearest form requires attention to genre, relationship, and how much surprise or challenge the speaker wants to display. This page does not attempt a general account of relative clauses or every pragmatic use of colloquial particles.

Mengapa: neutral and formal inquiry

Mengapa is standard in essays, reports, presentations, interviews, public communication, and careful questions. It often appears at the beginning because it asks for the reason behind the whole proposition.

Mengapa biaya perawatan meningkat pada semester kedua?

Why did maintenance costs increase in the second semester? (formal)

Mengapa sebagian peserta memilih mengundurkan diri?

Why did some participants choose to withdraw? (formal)

Mengapa jalan tersebut ditutup tanpa pemberitahuan sebelumnya?

Why was that road closed without prior notice? (formal)

Mengapa perubahan kecil ini menghasilkan dampak yang begitu besar?

Why does this small change produce such a large effect? (academic)

There is no English-style inversion. The subject stays before its predicate: Mengapa biaya meningkat?, not a reordered equivalent of why did increase the cost? Indonesian also adds no empty auxiliary corresponding to English do/did.

πŸ’‘
Use mengapa when the reason itself is the object of careful inquiry. It makes the question explicit without adding surprise or intimacy.

Kenapa: the everyday conversational form

Kenapa asks the same core reason question in ordinary conversation, messages, and informal interviews (informal). With friends and family it is usually less stiff than mengapa.

Kenapa kamu pulang lebih awal hari ini?

Why did you go home early today? (informal)

Kenapa air di kamar mandi tidak keluar?

Why isn't the water running in the bathroom? (informal)

Kenapa mereka memilih tempat yang jauh sekali?

Why did they choose such a faraway place? (informal)

Kenapa pesan saya belum kamu balas?

Why haven't you replied to my message? (informal)

That last question can sound accusatory because it asks a person to justify conduct. Kenapa itself is not rude; tone, relationship, and the proposition determine face pressure. A softer everyday alternative may explain the practical need first.

Saya perlu memastikan jadwalnya; kenapa pesannya belum dibalas?

I need to confirm the schedule; why hasn't the message been answered? (informal, contextualized)

In an official complaint or research question, mengapa is normally the better register choice. In intimate speech, repeated mengapa may sound ceremonious, theatrical, or deliberately distant rather than neutral.

Kamu kenapa? asks what is wrong

When kenapa follows a person as in Kamu kenapa?, the question often means β€œWhat is wrong?” or β€œWhat happened to you?” It is not merely an in-situ version of β€œWhy are you?”

Kamu kenapa? Dari tadi diam saja.

What's wrong? You've been quiet for a while. (informal)

Tangannya kenapa sampai harus diperban?

What happened to his/her hand that it had to be bandaged? (informal)

Mobilnya kenapa? Kok mesinnya tidak mau menyala?

What's wrong with the car? How come the engine won't start? (informal)

This construction is lexicalized and context-sensitive. Formal diagnosis would use a more explicit question such as Apa masalahnya? or Apa yang terjadi?

Kok: β€œhow come?” with surprise or challenge

Question-initial kok signals that the proposition conflicts with an expectation. It can express genuine surprise, puzzled concern, disbelief, or complaint (informal). Translating it as plain why loses that stance.

Kok kamu sudah sampai? Keretamu baru tiba satu jam lagi.

How come you're already here? Your train isn't due for another hour. (informal surprise)

Kok lampunya mati lagi padahal baru diperbaiki?

How come the light is out again even though it was just repaired? (informal complaint)

Kok harga makanannya berbeda dari yang tertera di menu?

How come the food price differs from what is printed on the menu? (informal challenge)

Kok kamu tahu alamat rumah baru mereka?

How come you know their new home address? (informal surprise)

Kok bisa hasilnya berubah sebanyak itu?

How could the result change that much? (informal disbelief)

Kok often appears before the whole clause, but subject-first Kamu kok diam? is also possible and places conversational focus on the unexpected predicate. This page only identifies the surprise/challenge contribution; the particle has further discourse uses.

Kamu kok diam sejak tadi?

How come you've been quiet this whole time? (informal concern)

πŸ’‘
If you could naturally preface the English question with β€œBut I thought...” or β€œHow come...?”, kok may fit. If you only need information, use mengapa or kenapa.

The same complaint in three relationships

Consider one proposition: the corridor light has still not been repaired. The grammar remains similar, but the chosen question word changes the stance.

Mengapa lampu di lorong tersebut belum diperbaiki?

Why has the light in that corridor not yet been repaired? (formal complaint)

Kenapa lampu di lorong itu belum diperbaiki?

Why hasn't the light in that corridor been repaired? (informal question to a friend or colleague)

Kok lampu di lorong itu belum diperbaiki?

How come the light in that corridor still hasn't been repaired? (informal startled/annoyed reaction)

The mengapa version can enter a letter, meeting, or essay. Kenapa treats the exchange as ordinary conversation. Kok presupposes an expectation that the repair should already have happened and can increase face pressure.

Answering with karena

A direct reason answer commonly begins with karena + clause/phrase. The answer does not repeat mengapa or kenapa.

A: Mengapa rapat dipindahkan? B: Karena ruang utama sedang diperbaiki.

A: Why was the meeting moved? B: Because the main room is being repaired.

A: Kenapa Dita tidak ikut? B: Karena anaknya sedang sakit.

A: Why isn't Dita joining? B: Because her child is ill. (informal question)

A: Kok jalannya sepi? B: Karena pasar hari ini tutup.

A: How come the road is quiet? B: Because the market is closed today. (informal surprise)

Kami menunda keberangkatan karena cuaca memburuk.

We postponed our departure because the weather deteriorated.

In a complete statement, the result often precedes karena. A standalone answer fragment can begin with it. Formal prose also uses sebab and more elaborate causal connectors; the karena–sebab guide develops that choice, while karena remains the broad everyday answer.

Face-sensitive ways to ask

Reason questions can imply a demand for justification, especially when the addressee controls the action. Adding an introductory request or framing the issue impersonally can reduce pressure.

Boleh saya tahu mengapa permohonan ini ditolak?

May I know why this application was rejected? (polite/formal)

Bisakah Anda menjelaskan mengapa pembayaran itu belum tercatat?

Could you explain why that payment has not yet been recorded? (polite/formal)

Apa alasan jadwal tersebut harus diubah?

What is the reason that schedule has to be changed? (formal/direct but impersonal)

Ada alasan tertentu kenapa kamu tidak mau ikut?

Is there a particular reason you don't want to join? (informal, less confrontational)

Politeness is not produced by replacing every kenapa with mengapa. Pronouns, titles, intonation, and whether the question attributes blame all matter.

Position, -kah, and punctuation

Fronting is the default for broad reason scope. Final kenapa is possible as an echo or follow-up, especially when the event is already established (informal).

Kamu membatalkan pesanannya kenapa?

Why did you cancel the order? (informal follow-up)

Mengapakah keputusan itu baru diumumkan sekarang?

Why was that decision announced only now? (formal/elevated)

Attached -kah raises the style and remains solid in mengapakah. Direct questions end with ?. An embedded reason question inside a statement does not receive its own question mark.

Kami belum memahami mengapa angka tersebut berubah.

We do not yet understand why that figure changed. (formal)

Common Mistakes

1. Using mengapa as the default in intimate speech

❌ Mengapa selalu merupakan pilihan paling alami dalam percakapan keluarga.

Incorrect claim β€” intimate relationships commonly favor kenapa.

βœ… Dalam percakapan keluarga yang santai, kenapa biasanya terdengar lebih alami.

In relaxed family conversation, kenapa usually sounds more natural.

2. Translating kok as neutral why

❌ Kok Anda memilih metode ini?

Register and stance mismatch for a neutral formal interview; kok adds surprise or challenge.

βœ… Mengapa Anda memilih metode ini?

Why did you choose this method? (formal neutral inquiry)

3. Answering a reason question with mengapa

❌ A: Kenapa tokonya tutup? B: Mengapa pemiliknya sakit.

Incorrect answer connector β€” use karena.

βœ… A: Kenapa tokonya tutup? B: Karena pemiliknya sakit.

A: Why is the shop closed? B: Because the owner is ill. (informal question)

4. Treating marked predicate-first order as the default

❌ Mengapa berubah jadwalnya tiba-tiba?

Marked rather than neutral here β€” Indonesian does not require English-style inversion.

βœ… Mengapa jadwalnya berubah tiba-tiba?

Why did the schedule change suddenly?

5. Writing a direct question without question punctuation

❌ Kenapa pintu belakang masih terbuka.

Incorrect punctuation for a direct written question.

βœ… Kenapa pintu belakang masih terbuka?

Why is the back door still open? (informal)

Key Takeaways

  • Mengapa is neutral-formal, kenapa is conversational, and kok adds surprise, violated expectation, or challenge.
  • Kamu kenapa? usually asks what is wrong or what happened.
  • A direct reason answer commonly uses karena, not the question word.
  • Because β€œwhy?” can demand justification, wording and relationship affect face pressure.
  • Attach -kah in mengapakah and use a question mark for direct questions.
