bagaimana and gimana

Bagaimana reaches across several meanings that English divides among how, what ... like, and what about. It can ask for a method, a person's condition, an evaluation, or a proposed course of action. Gimana is its highly frequent conversational reduction (informal). The grammar is similar, but the choice strongly affects voice.

The central challenge is not memorizing one translation. It is identifying which kind of missing information the question asks for: a procedure, a state, an opinion, or a proposal. This page does not develop general relative-clause syntax or every pragmatic use of colloquial particles.

Asking for manner or method

Clause-initial bagaimana can ask how an event happens or how someone performs it. Indonesian keeps normal subject–predicate order and adds no equivalent of English do/did.

Bagaimana kamu menemukan alamat kantor baru itu?

How did you find the address of that new office?

Bagaimana mereka memindahkan lemari sebesar itu?

How did they move a cabinet that large?

Bagaimana sistem ini melindungi data pengguna?

How does this system protect user data? (formal)

Bagaimana petugas mengetahui bahwa tiket itu palsu?

How did the officer know that the ticket was fake?

The answer supplies a manner, instrument, or procedure.

A: Bagaimana kamu membuka kotaknya? B: Saya memakai kunci kecil ini.

A: How did you open the box? B: I used this small key.

A: Bagaimana mereka mengirim barangnya? B: Melalui kapal laut.

A: How did they send the goods? B: By sea.

There is no inversion: Bagaimana kamu membuka..., not Bagaimana membuka kamu...?

Bagaimana caranya? makes the method nominal

Cara means way or method. Bagaimana caranya? asks “How is it done?” or “What is the way?” The attached -nya points to the method under discussion. A following verb can specify the goal.

Bagaimana caranya mengubah alamat di akun saya?

How do I change the address on my account?

Bagaimana cara menghubungi petugas di luar jam kerja?

How can I contact an officer outside working hours?

Saya sudah memasang aplikasinya, tetapi bagaimana cara memakainya?

I have installed the application, but how do I use it?

Tunjukkan kepada saya bagaimana caranya membuka bagian ini.

Show me how to open this section.

Bagaimana cara + verb is explicit and learner-friendly. In bagaimana caranya + verb, caranya acts as the topic or method noun. Do not split -nya from its host.

💡
When a bare bagaimana + clause feels too broad, add cara/caranya. It makes the desired answer type—an actionable method—explicit.

Condition and social well-being

With kabar, keadaan, kondisi, or a person as topic, bagaimana asks what something or someone is like now. English normally uses how is...; Indonesian needs no copula.

Bagaimana kabarnya setelah pindah ke kota baru?

How is he/she doing after moving to a new city?

Bagaimana keadaan ayahmu setelah operasi?

How is your father after the operation?

Bagaimana kondisi jalan menuju desa itu?

What is the condition of the road to that village?

Bagaimana anak-anak di rumah?

How are the children at home?

Bagaimana cuaca di sana minggu ini?

What is the weather like there this week?

The fixed social question Bagaimana kabarnya? can concern a person already known from context. Apa kabar? is the shorter greeting formula; it does not require a detailed medical or factual report.

Asking for evaluation or opinion

Bagaimana can ask the listener to evaluate a result, proposal, experience, or appearance. The expected answer is an assessment rather than a procedure.

Bagaimana hasil pertemuan dengan pemilik gedung?

How did the meeting with the building owner go?

Bagaimana pendapat Anda tentang usulan tersebut?

What is your opinion of that proposal? (formal)

Bagaimana menurutmu warna dinding yang baru?

What do you think of the new wall color?

Bagaimana rasanya bekerja dari rumah setiap hari?

What is it like to work from home every day?

Bagaimana penampilannya saat latihan tadi?

How was his/her performance during rehearsal earlier?

English uses how in some of these and what in others. Indonesian organizes them around the desired assessment.

Bagaimana kalau: proposing and testing an option

The formula Bagaimana kalau + clause? proposes a possibility for discussion: “How about/What if...?” It does not ask for the manner of the following action.

Bagaimana kalau kita bertemu setengah jam lebih awal?

How about meeting half an hour earlier?

Bagaimana kalau rapatnya dipindahkan ke hari Kamis?

What if the meeting is moved to Thursday?

Bagaimana kalau saya mengirim salinannya lewat surel?

How about I send the copy by email?

Bagaimana kalau hujan turun sebelum acara selesai?

What if it rains before the event ends?

The first three suggest a plan; the last raises a contingency. Context distinguishes proposal from hypothetical concern. Natural responses evaluate the option.

A: Bagaimana kalau kita naik kereta? B: Boleh, itu lebih cepat.

A: How about taking the train? B: Sure, that's faster.

A: Bagaimana kalau acaranya dimulai malam hari? B: Saya lebih suka sore.

A: How about starting the event in the evening? B: I prefer the afternoon.

Gimana: a colloquial reduction

Gimana covers the same major domains in relaxed conversation, messages, and dialogue (informal). It is not standard for an academic paper, official form, or formal exposition.

Gimana perjalananmu kemarin?

How was your trip yesterday? (informal)

Gimana cara pasang bagian yang ini?

How do you install this part? (informal)

Gimana menurutmu makanan di tempat baru itu?

What do you think of the food at that new place? (informal)

Gimana kalau kita pergi setelah makan siang?

How about we go after lunch? (informal)

Kalau keretanya terlambat, kita gimana?

If the train is late, what will we do? (informal)

The last sentence uses gimana predicatively to ask what the group's situation or response will be. That flexibility is conversational; a formal rewrite should state the issue more explicitly.

Jika kereta terlambat, tindakan apa yang akan kita ambil?

If the train is delayed, what action will we take? (formal)

💡
Use gimana to represent an informal speaker, not merely to make a sentence shorter. A formal paragraph with one isolated gimana has a mixed register.

Bagaimana dengan: “what about...?”

Bagaimana dengan + noun phrase? shifts attention to another topic, asks for its status, or requests an evaluation.

Bagaimana dengan biaya pengiriman ke luar kota?

What about the shipping cost outside the city?

Bagaimana dengan peserta yang belum menerima undangan?

What about participants who have not received an invitation?

Ruang utama sudah siap. Bagaimana dengan ruang tunggu?

The main room is ready. What about the waiting room?

This is not equivalent to dengan bagaimana. The preposition follows the question word as part of the established topic-shifting frame.

Embedded manner questions versus “the way that”

After verbs of knowing, asking, or explaining, bagaimana + clause can be a genuine embedded question: the method remains unknown or relevant.

Saya tahu bagaimana mereka menyelesaikan masalah itu.

I know how they solved that problem.

Jelaskan bagaimana alat ini bekerja.

Explain how this device works.

Dia bertanya bagaimana kami menemukan rumah tersebut.

He/She asked how we found that house.

English also uses how as a noun-like “the way that” after verbs of liking or evaluating. Careful Indonesian often prefers an explicit cara phrase there.

Saya suka cara kamu menjelaskan konsep yang rumit.

I like how you explain complicated concepts.

Kami mengagumi cara tim itu menangani keluhan pelanggan.

We admire how that team handles customer complaints. (formal)

Do not insert bagaimana mechanically wherever English has how. Ask whether the sentence contains a real method question or requires a nominal object meaning “the way/manner.” The embedded-question guide develops the first structure; this page does not teach general relative clauses.

Formal bagaimanakah and punctuation

Attached -kah creates elevated or explicitly formal bagaimanakah. It remains one word.

Bagaimanakah kebijakan tersebut diterapkan di daerah terpencil?

How is that policy implemented in remote areas? (formal)

Bagaimanakah hasil ini harus ditafsirkan?

How should this result be interpreted? (academic)

Direct questions take ?. Embedded questions inside statements do not.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding English-style inversion

❌ Bagaimana bekerja sistem baru ini?

Incorrect neutral order — the subject precedes its predicate.

✅ Bagaimana sistem baru ini bekerja?

How does this new system work?

2. Using gimana in formal exposition

❌ Gimana adalah bentuk baku untuk laporan akademik.

Incorrect claim — the standard form is bagaimana.

✅ Dalam laporan akademik, gunakan bentuk bagaimana.

In an academic report, use the form bagaimana.

3. Using bagaimana for a noun-like “the way” object

❌ Saya menyukai bagaimana Anda menyusun presentasi itu.

Awkward English transfer in careful Indonesian — menyukai calls for a nominal object.

✅ Saya menyukai cara Anda menyusun presentasi itu.

I like how you structured that presentation. (formal)

4. Reversing bagaimana dengan

❌ Dengan bagaimana rencana untuk peserta yang terlambat?

Incorrect order for the established what-about frame.

✅ Bagaimana dengan rencana untuk peserta yang terlambat?

What about the plan for participants who arrive late?

5. Separating attached -kah

❌ Bagaimana kah proses pendaftarannya?

Incorrect spelling — -kah attaches to its host.

✅ Bagaimanakah proses pendaftarannya?

How does the registration process work? (formal)

Key Takeaways

  • Bagaimana can ask for method, condition, evaluation, or a proposed option.
  • Bagaimana cara/caranya explicitly asks for a procedure; Bagaimana kabarnya? asks about well-being.
  • Bagaimana kalau + clause? proposes or tests an option; bagaimana dengan + noun? shifts to another topic.
  • Gimana is an informal reduction that should match the surrounding voice.
  • In noun-object uses corresponding to English “how/the way,” careful Indonesian often needs cara + clause rather than mechanical bagaimana.
