-kah and Focused Questions

The enclitic -kah attaches to the word placed under question focus. Siapakah dia? focuses the unknown person's identity; Benarkah berita itu? focuses whether β€œtrue” applies. It is not merely a general question mark spoken aloud: host choice matters, and the resulting forms often belong to formal, rhetorical, journalistic, or literary style rather than relaxed conversation.

Attachment is obligatory

Write -kah solid with its host. The question mark remains separate punctuation at the end of the sentence.

HostWith -kahQuestioned focus
siapasiapakahperson
benarbenarkahtruth
mungkinmungkinkahpossibility
bisabisakahability/permission
bukanbukankahexpected confirmation
akanakankahprospective realization

Siapakah dia yang berdiri di samping direktur?

Who is the person standing beside the director? (formal)

Benarkah kabar bahwa jembatan itu sudah dibuka?

Is the news that the bridge has opened true?

Mungkinkah kita menyelesaikan pekerjaan ini sebelum Jumat?

Could we possibly finish this work before Friday?

Akankah perubahan itu bertahan dalam jangka panjang?

Will that change last in the long term? (formal)

Forms such as siapa kah and benar kah violate standard attachment. Abstract morphological discussion may write siapa + -kah, but the actual word is siapakah.

-kah focuses its host

Compare three ways to ask about a person:

Siapa dia?

Who is she?

Dia siapa?

Who is she? (informal)

Siapakah dia?

Who is she? (formal)

The first is a neutral fronted question word. The second leaves the unknown identity in its ordinary predicate position. The third explicitly focuses siapa and gives the question a more deliberate style.

Now compare predicate focus:

Berita itu benar?

Is that news true?

Benarkah berita itu?

Is that news really true?

The intonation question asks about the proposition. Fronted benarkah singles out truth as the disputed property. This focus explains why -kah often accompanies surprise, rhetoric, or a contrast between possibilities.

πŸ’‘
Ask what is genuinely unknown or contrasted. Attach -kah to that word, rather than adding it mechanically to the last word of every question.

With question words

-Kah commonly attaches to question words in formal questions, official interviews, speeches, essays, and literary narration.

Apakah alasan utama penundaan tersebut?

What is the main reason for that delay? (formal)

Siapakah yang bertanggung jawab atas keputusan ini?

Who is responsible for this decision? (formal)

Bagaimanakah proses pengajuan keberatan dilakukan?

How is the objection process carried out? (formal)

Berapakah jumlah peserta yang telah mendaftar?

What is the number of participants who have registered? (formal)

In the first example, apakah is potentially ambiguous on paper: here it is apa + -kah meaning formal β€œwhat,” not the yes-no marker before a complete clause. The following noun phrase alasan utama and the expected content answer resolve the interpretation.

Neutral everyday alternatives usually omit -kah:

Apa alasan utama penundaan itu?

What is the main reason for that delay?

Bagaimana cara mengajukan keberatan?

How do you submit an objection?

The question-word overview compares this formal focus with ordinary in-situ syntax.

Multiword question expressions

Prepositions and separate words retain their ordinary spacing. -Kah attaches only to its host inside the expression.

Di manakah dokumen asli itu disimpan?

Where is the original document kept? (formal)

Ke manakah para pengungsi akan dipindahkan?

Where will the displaced people be moved to? (formal)

Dari manakah angka ini diperoleh?

Where was this figure obtained from? (formal)

Berapa lamakah proses pemeriksaan berlangsung?

How long does the inspection process take? (formal)

Write di manakah, ke manakah, and dari manakah as two words because di, ke, and dari are prepositions. Write berapa lamakah as two words: -kah attaches to lama, not to the whole phrase as a fused block.

With predicates and modal words

Attaching -kah to a predicate questions whether that property, state, ability, or prospect holds. Fronting the focused host is common.

Cukupkah waktu dua hari untuk menyelesaikan audit?

Are two days enough to finish the audit?

Bisakah Anda mengirim salinannya sebelum siang?

Can you send the copy before noon?

Perlukah semua peserta hadir secara langsung?

Do all participants need to attend in person?

Sudahkah pihak sekolah memberi tahu orang tua?

Has the school informed the parents yet? (formal)

Belumkah mereka menyadari akibat keputusan itu?

Have they still not realized the consequences of that decision? (formal)

Adakah kursi kosong di baris depan?

Are there any empty seats in the front row?

Bisakah is common in polite requests across careful speech. Sudahkah, belumkah, and akankah have a more formal or rhetorical profile than ordinary sudah ...?, belum ...?, and future questions by intonation.

adalahkah: grammatical but highly marked

Adalahkah attaches -kah to the identity linker adalah. It can question whether an identity or classification holds, but it is rare and very stiff in contemporary Indonesian. It is most likely in formal argument or deliberately elevated rhetoric; ordinary speech strongly prefers apakah or an intonation question.

Adalahkah keputusan ini satu-satunya pilihan yang tersedia?

Is this decision the only available choice? (formal)

Apakah keputusan ini satu-satunya pilihan yang tersedia?

Is this decision the only available choice? (formal)

Keputusan ini satu-satunya pilihan?

Is this decision the only choice?

There is no useful beginner rule that requires adalahkah whenever English has is. Indonesian usually needs no copula in nominal questions, and apakah already marks a complete yes-no proposition.

Rhetorical and literary force

Because -kah isolates a questioned element, it works naturally in rhetorical questions whose answer is doubtful, emotionally charged, or already implied.

Siapakah yang tidak ingin hidup dengan aman?

Who does not want to live safely? (formal)

Mungkinkah waktu menghapus semua kenangan itu?

Could time erase all those memories? (literary)

Haruskah kita diam ketika ketidakadilan terjadi?

Must we remain silent when injustice occurs? (formal)

Sampai kapankah warga harus menunggu kepastian?

How long must residents wait for certainty? (formal)

In relaxed conversation, these forms can sound speech-like, dramatic, or humorous rather than neutral. That stylistic effect is part of the construction, not a pronunciation error.

Punctuation and embedded clauses

A direct -kah question ends in a question mark. When the question is reported inside a statement, an embedded apakah clause is usually more natural than retaining a fronted rhetorical form.

Benarkah mereka akan pindah bulan depan?

Is it true that they will move next month?

Saya belum tahu apakah mereka akan pindah bulan depan.

I do not yet know whether they will move next month.

The first is direct and ends in ?. The second reports uncertainty and ends in a period.

Common Mistakes

Writing kah separately

❌ Siapa kah pemilik kendaraan ini?

Incorrect spelling β€” -kah attaches to its host.

βœ… Siapakah pemilik kendaraan ini?

Who owns this vehicle? (formal)

Fusing a preposition with mana

❌ Dimanakah rapat itu akan diadakan?

Incorrect standard spelling β€” locative di is a separate preposition.

βœ… Di manakah rapat itu akan diadakan?

Where will that meeting be held? (formal)

Treating -kah as an independent final particle

❌ Kamu mau kopi, kah?

Incorrect spelling for the focused enclitic β€” attach -kah to its questioned host.

βœ… Kamu mau kopi sekarang?

Would you like coffee now?

Some regional conversational varieties use a separate clause-final kah with their own distribution. That is a different construction from the focused Standard Indonesian enclitic described on this page.

Marking the proposition twice

❌ Apakah Anda setujukah dengan rencana ini?

Incorrect ordinary construction β€” do not combine clause-initial apakah with a second unfocused -kah.

βœ… Apakah Anda setuju dengan rencana ini?

Do you agree with this plan? (formal)

Attaching -kah to an entire spaced expression

❌ Berapalamakah Anda tinggal di kota itu?

Incorrect spelling β€” berapa lama remains a two-word expression.

βœ… Berapa lamakah Anda tinggal di kota itu?

How long did you live in that city? (formal)

Key Takeaways

  • -Kah attaches solidly to the word under question focus; it does not merely mark the clause generically.
  • It is common with question words, predicates, modal words, and rhetorical questions in formal or elevated styles.
  • Preserve spacing inside di manakah, ke manakah, dari manakah, and berapa lamakah.
  • Adalahkah is possible but highly marked; contemporary Indonesian normally uses apakah or intonation instead.
