Indonesian work and study expressions are organized by root families. Bekerja names the activity of working; mengerjakan selects a task being done. Belajar names learning or studying; mempelajari selects material for deliberate study; mengajar puts someone in the teaching role. These distinctions make updates and requests precise without long explanations.
This guide builds functional office and classroom interactions rather than a list of occupations or school subjects. See the kerja family for its full derivation.
Bekerja versus mengerjakan
Bekerja is usually intransitive: it describes employment, the activity of working, or how a person works. Add di for workplace, sebagai for role, and dengan for manner.
Saya bekerja di perusahaan logistik dekat pelabuhan.
I work at a logistics company near the port.
Dina bekerja sebagai perancang grafis sejak tahun lalu.
Dina has worked as a graphic designer since last year.
Tim kami bekerja dari rumah setiap hari Jumat.
Our team works from home every Friday.
Mereka bekerja dengan cepat tanpa mengabaikan keselamatan.
They work quickly without neglecting safety.
Mengerjakan is transitive: it means do, work on, or complete an assigned thing.
Saya sedang mengerjakan laporan penjualan bulan ini.
I am working on this month's sales report.
Tolong kerjakan bagian pertama sebelum makan siang.
Please do the first section before lunch.
Kami mengerjakan proyek itu bersama tim dari Bandung.
We are working on that project with a team from Bandung.
The root kerja itself is common in compounds such as jam kerja, tempat kerja, rekan kerja, and as a shortened verb in (informal) speech.
Jam kerja kantor layanan berakhir pukul empat sore.
The service office's working hours end at four in the afternoon.
Aku kerja dari rumah besok.
I'm working from home tomorrow. (informal)
Use full bekerja in careful Standard Indonesian.
Belajar, mempelajari, and mengajar
Belajar focuses on the learner's activity or process. It can be followed by a subject area in ordinary speech or by untuk + goal.
Sejak pindah ke Jakarta, saya belajar bahasa Indonesia setiap malam.
Since moving to Jakarta, I have studied Indonesian every evening.
Mereka belajar bersama untuk ujian matematika.
They study together for the mathematics exam.
Anak-anak sedang belajar membaca peta sederhana.
The children are learning to read a simple map.
Mempelajari is a transitive, often more deliberate “study/examine.” It keeps the material as direct object.
Mahasiswa mempelajari perubahan iklim melalui data satelit.
The university students study climate change through satellite data.
Saya perlu mempelajari petunjuk ini sebelum mengoperasikan mesin.
I need to study these instructions before operating the machine.
Mengajar means teach and foregrounds the teaching activity. Mengajarkan + content + kepada learner and mengajari + learner + content distinguish which participant is structurally privileged.
Bu Sari mengajar di sekolah menengah dekat rumah kami.
Ms. Sari teaches at the secondary school near our home.
Bu Sari mengajarkan fisika kepada siswa kelas sebelas.
Ms. Sari teaches physics to eleventh-grade students.
Bu Sari mengajari kami cara membaca grafik itu.
Ms. Sari teaches us how to read that graph.
Tugas, pekerjaan, and deadlines
Tugas is an assigned duty, task, or school assignment. Pekerjaan is work, a job, or a piece of work. Tenggat and batas waktu express a deadline; paling lambat states the latest permitted time.
Tugas kuliah ini harus dikumpulkan melalui sistem daring.
This course assignment must be submitted through the online system.
Pekerjaan hari ini belum selesai karena datanya terlambat.
Today's work is not finished because the data were late.
Tenggat pengiriman laporan jatuh pada hari Kamis.
The report submission deadline falls on Thursday. (formal)
Mohon kirim berkas lengkap paling lambat pukul tiga sore.
Please send the complete file no later than three in the afternoon.
Tugas akhir can mean a final academic project or thesis-like requirement depending on the program; ask locally rather than assuming one exact English degree term.
Meetings and office updates
Use rapat as a noun with mengadakan rapat “hold a meeting,” mengikuti rapat “attend/take part,” and rapat dimulai “the meeting begins.”
Kami mengadakan rapat singkat setiap Senin pagi.
We hold a short meeting every Monday morning.
Saya tidak bisa mengikuti rapat karena harus menemui klien.
I cannot attend the meeting because I have to meet a client.
Rapat evaluasi dimulai pukul dua di ruang utama.
The evaluation meeting begins at two in the main room.
Office update
Rina: Bagaimana perkembangan laporan untuk klien baru?
Rina: How is the report for the new client progressing?
Dimas: Bagian analisis sudah selesai, tetapi saya masih memeriksa angkanya.
Dimas: The analysis section is finished, but I am still checking the figures.
Rina: Apakah draf pertama bisa dikirim sebelum rapat besok?
Rina: Can the first draft be sent before tomorrow's meeting?
Dimas: Bisa. Saya akan mengirimkannya paling lambat pukul sembilan pagi.
Dimas: Yes. I will send it no later than nine in the morning.
A useful update names accomplished work, remaining work, a risk, and a next commitment. It does not need English-style tense marking on every verb.
Class plans and exams
Ujian is an exam or examination. Common frames include mengikuti ujian “sit/take an exam,” belajar untuk ujian, mengerjakan soal, lulus ujian, and hasil ujian.
Kami mengikuti ujian akhir pada minggu pertama bulan Juni.
We take the final exam in the first week of June.
Siswa diberi waktu sembilan puluh menit untuk mengerjakan semua soal.
Students are given ninety minutes to answer all the questions.
Hasil ujian akan diumumkan melalui portal sekolah.
The exam results will be announced through the school portal.
Class plan
Guru: Minggu depan kita mempelajari dua bab tentang ekosistem.
Teacher: Next week we will study two chapters about ecosystems.
Siswa: Apakah kami perlu membaca kedua bab itu sebelum kelas?
Student: Do we need to read both chapters before class?
Guru: Ya. Setelah itu, kalian mengerjakan tugas kelompok.
Teacher: Yes. After that, you will do a group assignment.
Siswa: Tugasnya dikumpulkan kapan, Bu?
Student: When is the assignment due, ma'am?
Guru: Kumpulkan paling lambat hari Jumat sebelum pukul empat.
Teacher: Submit it no later than Friday before four.
Asking for leave or permission
Izin can be a noun “permission/leave” or part of a request. Use meminta izin untuk... in an explicit careful request, or saya izin... in common workplace speech.
Saya ingin meminta izin untuk tidak masuk kerja besok.
I would like to request permission not to come to work tomorrow.
Apakah saya boleh pulang lebih awal untuk menemani ayah ke rumah sakit?
May I leave early to accompany my father to the hospital?
Saya sudah menyerahkan tugas mendesak kepada rekan satu tim.
I have handed the urgent tasks to a teammate.
Leave request
Karyawan: Pak, saya ingin meminta izin cuti pada hari Senin.
Employee: Sir, I would like to request leave on Monday.
Atasan: Apakah persiapan rapat hari Selasa sudah diatur?
Manager: Have the preparations for Tuesday's meeting been arranged?
Karyawan: Sudah, Pak. Drafnya selesai hari Jumat, dan Dini akan menangani pesan mendesak.
Employee: Yes, sir. The draft will be finished Friday, and Dini will handle urgent messages.
Atasan: Baik, silakan ajukan cutinya melalui sistem.
Manager: All right, please submit the leave request through the system.
The request is more persuasive because it addresses work continuity rather than merely saying Saya tidak datang.
Negotiating a deadline
Do not simply announce lateness. State the obstacle, completed progress, requested new deadline, and what can still be delivered.
Mahasiswa: Bu, bolehkah saya meminta perpanjangan tenggat tugas?
Student: Ma'am, may I request an extension of the assignment deadline?
Dosen: Kendalanya apa, dan berapa lama waktu tambahan yang kamu perlukan?
Lecturer: What is the obstacle, and how much extra time do you need?
Mahasiswa: Data wawancara baru saya terima hari ini. Bolehkah saya mengumpulkannya hari Senin?
Student: I only received the interview data today. May I submit it on Monday?
Dosen: Kirim kerangkanya besok, lalu naskah lengkap paling lambat Senin siang.
Lecturer: Send the outline tomorrow, then the complete paper no later than Monday noon.
Mahasiswa: Baik, Bu. Terima kasih atas kelonggarannya.
Student: All right, ma'am. Thank you for the flexibility.
