Beberapa means “some” or “several”: a number greater than one that the speaker leaves indefinite and normally presents as fairly small. It comes before a count noun, and that following noun stays in its bare form: beberapa buku, not beberapa buku-buku.

A small indefinite number
Use beberapa + count noun when the exact number is unknown, irrelevant, or deliberately unstated. The noun itself receives a plural interpretation from the quantifier.
Saya meminjam beberapa buku dari perpustakaan untuk akhir pekan.
I borrowed several books from the library for the weekend.
Beberapa pelanggan masih menunggu di luar.
Several customers are still waiting outside.
Kami perlu membahas beberapa masalah sebelum kontrak ditandatangani.
We need to discuss a few issues before the contract is signed.
English requires plural marking in books, customers, and issues. Indonesian does not make a noun agree with beberapa: buku, pelanggan, and masalah retain their ordinary forms. The plurality is already recoverable from beberapa.
Beberapa is neutral in both everyday conversation and formal writing. It does not promise a fixed range such as exactly three to five. Context determines whether “some,” “a few,” or “several” is the best English translation.
Count nouns, not undivided mass
Because beberapa quantifies separate units, it combines directly with countable nouns: beberapa kursi, beberapa saran, beberapa alasan. It does not directly mean an unmeasured amount of water, rice, or money.
Tolong sisakan beberapa kursi untuk tamu yang datang terlambat.
Please save a few chairs for guests who arrive late.
Manajer memberi kami beberapa saran yang sangat praktis.
The manager gave us several very practical suggestions.
Kami membawa beberapa botol air untuk perjalanan itu.
We brought several bottles of water for the trip.
The last sentence counts bottles, not the substance air itself. For “a little water,” use sedikit air. This is an important difference from English some, which can quantify either plural count nouns (some bottles) or mass nouns (some water). Indonesian divides those jobs: beberapa for a number of units, sedikit for a small amount.
Times and periods
Words for occasions and bounded periods behave as count nouns. Beberapa kali means “several times,” while beberapa hari/menit/tahun leaves the number of days, minutes, or years unstated.
Saya sudah menelepon beberapa kali, tetapi belum ada yang menjawab.
I've called several times, but no one has answered yet.
Kami akan tinggal di Surabaya selama beberapa hari.
We will stay in Surabaya for a few days.
Tunggu beberapa menit lagi; dokumennya hampir selesai dicetak.
Wait a few more minutes; the document is almost finished printing.
English speakers sometimes treat time only as a mass noun. Indonesian kali is explicitly an occasion counter, so beberapa kali is structurally just like beberapa buku: several countable instances.
Introducing new participants in a narrative
Beberapa is useful when a story introduces an indefinite group for the first time. After that group is established, a demonstrative, mereka, or another definite expression can track it.
Beberapa hari lalu, seorang wisatawan menemukan dompet di dekat halte.
A few days ago, a tourist found a wallet near the bus stop.
Beberapa warga datang untuk membantu. Mereka membawa senter dan air minum.
Several residents came to help. They brought flashlights and drinking water.
Tadi pagi, beberapa paket tiba di kantor. Paket-paket itu langsung dibawa ke ruang penyimpanan.
This morning, several packages arrived at the office. Those packages were taken straight to the storage room.
In the last example, beberapa paket introduces the packages. Paket-paket itu then refers back to that now-identifiable set. Reduplication in the second sentence helps depict the members as a set, but it is not agreement with beberapa and does not belong in the first phrase.
Beberapa versus other quantity words
The choice depends on what is being quantified:

Hanya beberapa anggota yang hadir, bukan semua anggota.
Only a few members attended, not all the members.
Hanya beberapa explicitly means “only a few.” Without hanya, beberapa is ordinarily neutral: it presents an indefinite small number without necessarily complaining that the number is insufficient.
Position, spelling, and capitalization
Beberapa is a free determiner written separately and lowercase: beberapa buku baru itu. It precedes the noun, while adjectives and demonstratives follow the noun. For the larger template, see determiner and modifier order.
The spelling rule does not change before names or titles: beberapa karya Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Personal names retain their own capitals, and Sang Pencipta is capitalized when used as the conventional reverential designation. The determiner itself remains lowercase unless it begins a sentence.

Common Mistakes
1. Reduplicating the noun after beberapa
❌ Saya membeli beberapa buku-buku bekas.
Incorrect — beberapa already gives the noun a plural interpretation.
✅ Saya membeli beberapa buku bekas.
I bought several used books.
2. Using beberapa directly with a mass noun
❌ Tolong tambahkan beberapa air ke dalam panci.
Incorrect — unmeasured water is a mass, not a number of separate units.
✅ Tolong tambahkan sedikit air ke dalam panci.
Please add a little water to the pot.
3. Copying English duration structure
❌ Saya menunggu untuk beberapa menit di depan stasiun.
Incorrect — a simple duration with beberapa menit does not take English-style untuk 'for.'
✅ Saya menunggu beberapa menit di depan stasiun.
I waited for a few minutes in front of the station.
4. Joining the determiner to the noun
❌ Beberapahari lalu saya bertemu Dina di stasiun.
Incorrect spelling — beberapa is a separate word.
✅ Beberapa hari lalu saya bertemu Dina di stasiun.
A few days ago I met Dina at the station.
