Ellipsis and Gapping in Complex Sentences

Indonesian can leave repeated material unspoken inside a complex sentence: one subject may govern several predicates, a second coordinated clause may lack its predicate, and a comparative phrase may omit an entire repeated standard. This is ellipsis; the more specific term gapping describes a coordinated clause whose central predicate is absent while contrasting remnants remain.

Omission is not licensed by brevity alone. The missing expression must be recoverable from both structural parallelism and discourse salience. This page develops that advanced principle rather than cataloguing conjunctions or reviewing simple sentence patterns.

For conversational fragments such as Sudah and Di rumah, first review elliptical and short-answer sentences. Here the omissions occur inside larger coordinated and comparative structures.

One subject shared by several predicates

When coordinated predicates have the same subject, Indonesian normally states that subject once. The second predicate is not subjectless in interpretation; it inherits the first clause's active subject.

Nadia menutup laptop, memasukkan berkas ke tas, lalu meninggalkan ruang rapat.

Nadia closed her laptop, put the documents in her bag, and then left the meeting room.

The technicians inspected the cables and replaced two damaged connectors.

The director has not read the report, but already knows its main conclusion.

The full versions would repeat Nadia, para teknisi, or direktur before every predicate. That repetition is grammatical, but without contrast it sounds needlessly heavy.

Nadia menutup laptop, Nadia memasukkan berkas ke tas, lalu Nadia meninggalkan ruang rapat.

Nadia closed her laptop, Nadia put the documents in her bag, and then Nadia left the meeting room. (complete but repetitive)

A changed subject must be stated. Otherwise readers normally carry the first subject forward.

Nadia menutup laptop, Fikri mematikan proyektor, lalu mereka meninggalkan ruang rapat.

Nadia closed her laptop, Fikri switched off the projector, and then they left the meeting room.

💡
Shared-subject ellipsis works because coordinated predicates offer matching subject positions and the discourse keeps one participant active. A mere sequence of nearby verbs is not enough.

Omitted predicates and gapping

In gapping, a later coordinated clause retains two or more contrasting pieces while omitting a predicate recoverable from the first clause. The construction is especially natural in comparisons, reports, and compact (formal) prose.

Kelompok pertama meneliti kualitas air, sedangkan kelompok kedua meneliti kondisi tanah.

The first group studied water quality, whereas the second group studied soil conditions. (full)

Kelompok pertama meneliti kualitas air, sedangkan kelompok kedua kondisi tanah.

The first group studied water quality, whereas the second group studied soil conditions. (gapped)

The second clause preserves kelompok kedua and kondisi tanah. Their positions parallel kelompok pertama and kualitas air, so meneliti is recoverable.

Rina memesan teh hangat, sedangkan Arman kopi tanpa gula.

Rina ordered hot tea, whereas Arman ordered coffee without sugar.

The Bandung branch reached its target in May, and the Makassar branch did so in June. (formal, concise)

Sebagian peserta memilih hadir langsung, sedangkan sebagian lainnya secara daring.

Some participants chose to attend in person, while others chose to attend online.

Gapping need not remove a single word. It can suppress a predicate plus repeated function words when the surviving constituents still establish a clean correspondence.

The legal team will submit the draft to the board tomorrow, whereas the finance team will submit the budget report to the auditors the day after tomorrow. (formal)

This last sentence is dense: the reader restores akan menyerahkan. A fully expressed version is often clearer outside a table-like comparison.

The legal team will submit the draft to the board tomorrow, whereas the finance team will submit the budget report to the auditors the day after tomorrow. (full)

Comparative ellipsis

Comparatives routinely omit material already supplied by the first clause or noun phrase. Daripada introduces the standard of comparison; the standard need not repeat an identical predicate.

The maintenance cost of the old building is higher than that of the new building. (full)

The maintenance cost of the old building is higher than that of the new building. (elliptical)

The shorter form is common, but it can momentarily sound as though a cost is being compared with a building. Repeating biaya perawatan is preferable where precision matters.

Tax revenue is rising faster this year than it did last year.

Maya works from home more often than her younger sibling does.

That night bus was not as comfortable as we had imagined.

With seperti, sebagaimana, or yang, a comparison can likewise leave repeated material implicit.

The field-test results are not as good as the laboratory-test results.

Kondisi pasar berubah sebagaimana diperkirakan para analis.

Market conditions changed as the analysts had predicted. (formal)

English permits many similar omissions, but the matching English sentence does not prove that Indonesian can delete the same constituent. Indonesian requires a recognizable local structure and a uniquely recoverable meaning.

Recoverability: structure plus discourse

Structural parallelism identifies the grammatical slot; discourse salience identifies its content. Both are necessary.

Pada sesi pagi, Dimas memaparkan temuan awal; pada sesi siang, Laras memaparkan rekomendasi akhir.

In the morning session, Dimas presented the preliminary findings; in the afternoon session, Laras presented the final recommendations. (full)

Pada sesi pagi, Dimas memaparkan temuan awal; pada sesi siang, Laras rekomendasi akhir.

In the morning session, Dimas presented the preliminary findings; in the afternoon session, Laras presented the final recommendations. (gapped, formal)

The repeated frames pada sesi..., the two presenters, and the two presentation contents make the gap transparent.

By contrast, the following are ambiguous failures rather than elegant ellipsis:

❌ Rina memperkenalkan Dodi kepada manajer, sedangkan Sari kepada direktur.

Ambiguous failure — did Sari introduce Dodi to the director, or did Rina introduce Sari to the director?

✅ Rina memperkenalkan Dodi kepada manajer, sedangkan Sari memperkenalkan Dodi kepada direktur.

Rina introduced Dodi to the manager, whereas Sari introduced Dodi to the director.

Ambiguous failure — a score is apparently compared with a teacher, and the missing standard cannot be securely reconstructed.

Raka's score is higher than the score given by the previous teacher.

In the first failure, several possible gaps compete. In the second, the two sides are not semantically comparable. Adding the intended predicate or nominal head restores the relation.

💡
Test an ellipsis by restoring the missing words. If the restored clause preserves the same grammatical roles and only one natural restoration fits the context, the omission is likely sound.

Scope, voice, and punctuation

Negation and aspect can belong to both coordinated predicates or only one. Repeat them when scope would otherwise be uncertain.

Farah belum menandatangani kontrak atau menyerahkan jaminan.

Farah has neither signed the contract nor submitted the deposit yet.

Farah sudah menandatangani kontrak, tetapi belum menyerahkan jaminan.

Farah has signed the contract but has not yet submitted the deposit.

A switch from actor voice to passive can be grammatical, but it weakens the structural match needed for gapping.

Manajer menyetujui rencana pertama, sedangkan rencana kedua ditolak oleh direksi.

The manager approved the first plan, whereas the second plan was rejected by the board.

Because the second clause is a full passive, no predicate is missing. Attempting to treat rencana kedua as a remnant of menyetujui would produce the wrong meaning.

Under EYD V, use a comma before a contrasting clause introduced by sedangkan, tetapi, or melainkan. A semicolon can separate longer balanced clauses whose internal commas would make the boundary hard to see. Do not place a comma between a predicate and a shared object merely to advertise omission.

Petugas mencatat dan memverifikasi nomor paspor setiap penumpang.

The officer recorded and verified every passenger's passport number.

Here nomor paspor setiap penumpang is the object shared by mencatat and memverifikasi; no comma belongs between them.

Common Mistakes

Deleting a repeated predicate without contrasting remnants

❌ Yani membawa payung, sedangkan hujan deras.

Incorrect gapping — hujan deras does not supply a parallel subject-object pair for membawa.

✅ Yani membawa payung karena hujan turun sangat deras.

Yani brought an umbrella because it was raining very heavily.

Carrying the old subject across a real subject change

❌ Kepala toko memeriksa stok dan mengantar pesanan kurir.

Wrong for the intended meaning that the courier delivered the order — omission makes the shop manager the actor of both verbs.

✅ Kepala toko memeriksa stok, dan kurir mengantar pesanan.

The shop manager checked the stock, and the courier delivered the order.

Copying an English comparative omission mechanically

❌ Harga kamar depan lebih mahal daripada belakang.

Unclear calque — belakang alone does not securely identify the second room or its price.

The front room costs more than the back room.

Omitting material across incompatible voice structures

❌ Tim audit memeriksa rekening pertama, sedangkan rekening kedua oleh polisi.

Incorrect — the second remnant suggests a passive agent, but no passive predicate is available to restore.

✅ Tim audit memeriksa rekening pertama, sedangkan rekening kedua diperiksa oleh polisi.

The audit team examined the first account, whereas the second was examined by the police.

Spacing morphology inside a restored form

❌ Data lama diperiksa tim A, sedangkan data baru di periksa tim B.

Incorrect spelling — passive di- attaches to the verb.

✅ Data lama diperiksa tim A, sedangkan data baru diperiksa tim B.

The old data was examined by Team A, whereas the new data was examined by Team B.

Key Takeaways

  • Shared subjects and gapped predicates are licensed by parallel grammatical roles.
  • Active discourse makes the omitted content uniquely recoverable.
  • Comparative ellipsis is acceptable only when the two standards remain genuinely comparable.
  • Voice, aspect, and negation must be repeated when omission would blur their scope.
  • Restore the full form as a diagnostic; if several restorations compete, write more explicitly.
