Using meN- in Object Voice

Buku itu saya membaca is not Standard Indonesian object voice. The repair is Buku itu saya baca: the patient comes first, the pronominal actor stands immediately before the verb, and actor-voice meN- disappears. English translates both roles in the opposite order—“I read that book”—which makes the Indonesian voice change easy to overlook.

The error is deeper than an unnecessary prefix. Patient-first object voice is a grammatical voice construction with its own pivot, actor position, particle order, and relative-clause behavior. It is not simple topicalization followed by an unchanged active clause. This guide diagnoses that construction without repeating the full Indonesian voice system.

Recognize the object-voice template

The careful core order is:

patient/pivot + aspect or modal + pronominal actor + selected bare stem + complements

❌ Buku itu saya membaca.

Incorrect object voice—the preverbal actor saya must be followed by bare baca.

✅ Buku itu saya baca.

I read that book. (patient-oriented object voice)

❌ Surat konfirmasi ini akan kami mengirim besok pagi.

Incorrect voice mixture—patient-first object voice requires kami kirim.

✅ Surat konfirmasi ini akan kami kirim besok pagi.

We will send this confirmation letter tomorrow morning.

❌ Masalah itu perlu kita mendiskusikan sebelum rapat.

Incorrect object voice—kita precedes the selected bare stem diskusikan.

✅ Masalah itu perlu kita diskusikan sebelum rapat.

We need to discuss that issue before the meeting.

In the first correction, buku itu is the patient pivot, saya is the semantic actor, and baca is the bare transitive verb. No form of English be is required, and no di- appears.

💡
Protect the actor–verb unit: saya baca, kami kirim, kamu lihat, Anda isi. If meN- remains after that actor in a patient-first clause, two voice patterns have probably been mixed.

Why this is not ordinary topicalization

An actor-voice clause begins from the actor and uses meN-:

Saya membaca buku panduan itu di kereta.

I read that guidebook on the train. (actor voice)

Object voice reorganizes the same event around the patient:

Buku panduan itu saya baca di kereta menuju Bandung.

I read that guidebook on the train to Bandung. (object voice)

If Indonesian merely moved buku panduan itu to the left and left the active clause unchanged, Buku panduan itu saya membaca would be sufficient. It is not. Voice morphology changes because the initial patient becomes the clause's privileged argument.

❌ Paket kecil itu kami menerima tadi siang.

Incorrect—the patient has been placed first, but actor-voice menerima has been left unchanged.

✅ Paket kecil itu kami terima tadi siang.

We received that small parcel this afternoon.

Indonesian can use separate topic-comment structures in conversation, and speakers show variation with full noun actors. Those facts do not erase the stable pronominal pattern taught here: definite patient + pronoun + bare stem.

First- and second-person actors are the clearest cases

Full saya, aku, kami, kita, kamu, kalian, and Anda naturally occupy the preverbal actor position.

Rancangan ini sudah saya periksa dua kali.

I have checked this design twice.

Kue terakhir itu aku simpan buat kamu.

I saved that last piece of cake for you. (informal pronoun aku; standard object-voice order)

Keputusan tersebut akan kami umumkan setelah makan siang.

We will announce the decision after lunch. (formal)

Kesalahan ini harus kita perbaiki bersama.

We must correct this mistake together.

Bagian belakang formulir perlu kamu isi dengan huruf kapital.

You need to complete the back of the form in capital letters.

Tiket digital ini dapat Anda tunjukkan kepada petugas.

You may show this digital ticket to the officer. (formal/polite)

An ordinary full third-person noun instead strongly favors di- passive in careful prose:

Laporan itu diperiksa Rina sebelum diserahkan kepada direktur.

The report was checked by Rina before being submitted to the director.

Conversational Laporan itu Rina periksa occurs, and dia + bare stem is widespread. Do not label all such clauses impossible. For production at B1, however, use the robust split: pronominal saya/kamu object voice versus di- + third-person noun agent.

Particles precede the actor–verb unit

Aspect, modality, negation, and prohibition normally stand before the pronominal actor in careful object voice:

Berkas itu sudah saya baca sampai halaman terakhir.

I have read that file through the final page.

Rumah lama itu sedang kami renovasi sedikit demi sedikit.

We are renovating that old house little by little.

Nomor tersebut tidak akan kami gunakan lagi.

We will not use that number again.

Foto ini jangan kamu unggah sebelum mendapat izin.

Do not upload this photo before getting permission.

The careful sequence is sudah saya baca, not a hybrid with membaca. Some conversational topic-comment patterns allow saya sudah baca after a detached topic, but learners should not use that variation to justify actor-voice morphology.

❌ Proposal itu sudah mereka menyetujui tanpa perubahan.

Incorrect object voice—the aspect marker is correctly placed, but menyetujui retains actor-voice meN-.

✅ Proposal itu sudah mereka setujui tanpa perubahan.

They have approved the proposal without changes.

❌ Pesanan ini belum kami menerima karena alamatnya salah.

Incorrect object voice—belum precedes the actor, but the following stem must be terima.

✅ Pesanan ini belum kami terima karena alamatnya salah.

We have not received this order because the address is wrong.

The full ordering details appear on the object-voice aspect page.

Bare means no actor-voice prefix, not no morphology

If -kan or -i selects the intended object and argument structure, it remains in object voice. Remove meN-, not the whole derived stem.

Saya membacakan cerita itu kepada adik.

I read that story aloud to my younger sibling. (actor voice; membacakan)

Cerita itu saya bacakan kepada adik sebelum tidur.

I read that story aloud to my younger sibling before bed. (object voice; bacakan)

Kami mengirimi pelanggan itu kode baru.

We send that customer a new code. (actor voice; recipient object)

Pelanggan itu akan kami kirimi kode baru sore ini.

We will send that customer a new code this afternoon. (object voice; kirimi retained)

❌ Cerita ini akan saya baca kepada anak-anak malam nanti.

Incorrect for the intended read-to-them frame—the selected stem needs -kan.

✅ Cerita ini akan saya bacakan kepada anak-anak malam nanti.

I will read this story to the children tonight.

Calling every object-voice verb a “root” can therefore mislead. Baca is a root; bacakan and kirimi are bare voice stems that retain derivational morphology.

Object relatives require the same voice switch

When a noun is the patient inside a yang relative clause, a pronominal actor precedes the bare stem. This is the required relative contrast:

❌ Artikel yang saya menulis untuk majalah kampus akhirnya terbit.

Incorrect object relative—the head artikel is the patient, so saya must precede bare tulis.

✅ Artikel yang saya tulis untuk majalah kampus akhirnya terbit.

The article I wrote for the campus magazine has finally been published.

Compare an actor relative, where the head noun is the doer and meN- remains:

Mahasiswa yang menulis artikel itu sedang belajar di perpustakaan.

The student who wrote that article is studying in the library. (actor relative)

Artikel yang ditulis mahasiswa itu membahas transportasi umum.

The article written by that student discusses public transportation. (di- passive relative)

The relative head's semantic role chooses the voice. Mahasiswa yang menulis artikel describes the writer; artikel yang saya tulis describes the written thing.

💡
For “the noun that I/you/we verb,” use noun + yang + particle + pronoun + bare stem: laporan yang sudah saya baca.

Questions reveal the same patient pivot

An object question built with apa/siapa + yang also uses the bare stem after its actor.

❌ Apa yang kamu melihat dari jendela dapur?

Incorrect patient question—kamu must precede bare lihat.

✅ Apa yang kamu lihat dari jendela dapur?

What did you see from the kitchen window?

Siapa yang kamu temui setelah acara selesai?

Whom did you meet after the event ended? (siapa as patient)

To ask who performed the seeing, make siapa the actor and retain actor voice:

Siapa yang melihat kejadian itu dari balkon?

Who saw the incident from the balcony? (siapa as actor)

English uses word order and auxiliary did; Indonesian uses voice to distinguish the roles.

Bound actors attach to the stem

The bound forms ku- and kau- attach orthographically: kubaca, kutulis, kaulihat, kaukirim. Full saya, aku, kamu remain separate.

❌ Novel pendek itu sudah ku baca saat menunggu dokter.

Incorrect standard spelling—the bound actor ku- attaches to baca.

✅ Novel pendek itu sudah kubaca saat menunggu dokter.

I read that short novel while waiting for the doctor. (compact/written)

❌ Alamat yang kau berikan ternyata belum lengkap.

Incorrect standard spelling when kau- is the bound actor form.

✅ Alamat yang kauberikan ternyata belum lengkap.

The address you gave turns out to be incomplete. (compact/written)

Common Mistakes

1. Treating the patient as a detached active topic

❌ Makanan itu saya memasak sebelum para tamu datang.

Incorrect voice analysis—the patient-first clause requires saya masak.

✅ Makanan itu saya masak sebelum para tamu datang.

I cooked that food before the guests arrived.

2. Mixing di- passive with a preverbal actor

❌ Kunci cadangan itu saya diambil dari laci atas.

Incorrect mixture—choose saya ambil or diambil by a postverbal agent.

✅ Kunci cadangan itu saya ambil dari laci atas.

I took that spare key from the upper drawer.

3. Removing a valency-changing suffix

❌ Puisi ini akan kami baca kepada para tamu saat pembukaan.

Incorrect selected stem for the intended read-to-an-audience frame—retain -kan in object voice.

✅ Puisi ini akan kami bacakan kepada para tamu saat pembukaan.

We will read this poem to the guests at the opening.

4. Retaining meN- in an object relative

❌ Sepeda yang kami memperbaiki kemarin sudah diambil pemiliknya.

Incorrect object relative—the head sepeda requires kami perbaiki.

✅ Sepeda yang kami perbaiki kemarin sudah diambil pemiliknya.

The bicycle we repaired yesterday has been collected by its owner.

5. Moving the actor after the bare verb

❌ Laporan itu belum baca saya sampai selesai.

Incorrect object-voice order—the pronominal actor must immediately precede baca.

✅ Laporan itu belum saya baca sampai selesai.

I have not read that report to the end yet.

Key Takeaways

  • Buku itu saya membaca must become Buku itu saya baca.
  • Object voice is a patient-oriented voice construction, not unchanged active grammar after topicalization.
  • The careful order is patient + particle + pronominal actor + bare selected stem.
  • Retain necessary -kan/-i while removing actor-voice meN-.
  • Patient relatives and yang object questions reproduce the same voice switch.
