Object Voice with a Bare Verb: Aspect, Modality, and Negation

Object voice keeps the lexical verb unchanged while separate preverbal particles build aspect, prospect, modality, and negation. Buku itu saya baca becomes sudah saya baca, sedang saya baca, akan saya baca, bisa saya baca, tidak saya baca, or belum saya baca. The actor–bare verb sequence stays intact.

The neutral template is:

patient/pivot + particle(s) + pronominal actor + bare verb + complements

This order differs from English auxiliary placement and from di- passive. Compare object voice Buku itu sudah saya baca with di- passive Buku itu sudah dibaca Rina. The broader ordering system is developed in aspect and modal order.

The core particle series

FunctionObject-voice clauseInterpretation
realized aspectBuku itu sudah saya baca.I have read it already
progressive aspectBuku itu sedang saya baca.I am reading it
prospectiveBuku itu akan saya baca.I will read it
ability/possibilityBuku itu bisa saya baca.I can read it
simple verbal negationBuku itu tidak saya baca.I do/did not read it
not-yet negationBuku itu belum saya baca.I have not read it yet
prohibitionBuku itu jangan kamu baca.do not read it

Buku itu sudah saya baca.

I have already read that book.

Buku itu sedang saya baca.

I am reading that book.

Buku itu akan saya baca.

I will read that book.

Buku itu bisa saya baca tanpa kamus.

I can read that book without a dictionary.

Buku itu tidak saya baca saat kuliah.

I did not read that book in college.

Buku itu belum saya baca.

I have not read that book yet.

Buku itu jangan kamu baca di depan anak-anak.

Do not read that book in front of the children.

These minimal sequences show two aspect markers (sudah, sedang), prospective akan, modal bisa, two negators (tidak, belum), and prohibitive jangan. In every case baca remains bare.

💡
Protect the actor–verb unit. Put particles before saya baca, kami kirim, or kamu lihat; do not move them between actor and verb as though they were English auxiliaries.

Sudah presents a realized situation

Sudah says that the relevant event has occurred or its result is now established. The reference point may be past, present, or future.

Buku biografi itu sudah saya baca dua kali.

I have already read that biography twice.

Surat ini sudah kami kirim tadi pagi.

We sent this letter this morning.

Apa saja yang sudah kamu lihat di museum?

What have you seen at the museum?

Sebelum rapat besok, laporan itu sudah saya baca sampai selesai.

Before tomorrow's meeting, I will have read that report to the end.

English needs different auxiliaries in these translations. Indonesian uses the same sudah + actor + bare verb pattern and relies on the time context.

Sedang puts a dynamic event in progress

Sedang views the event from inside its development.

Buku itu sedang saya baca, jadi belum bisa kamu pinjam.

I am reading that book, so you cannot borrow it yet.

Surat ini sedang kami periksa sebelum dikirim.

We are checking this letter before it is sent.

Apa yang sedang kamu lihat di ponsel?

What are you looking at on your phone?

Rumah itu sedang kami perbaiki setelah banjir.

We are repairing that house after the flood.

Sedang combines naturally with dynamic baca, periksa, lihat, and perbaiki. A stable state does not automatically accept it; the restriction comes from lexical aspect, not voice.

Akan marks a prospective event

Akan precedes the actor and places the event after the reference point or presents it as planned.

Buku saku itu akan saya baca selama perjalanan kereta.

I will read that pocketbook during the train journey.

Surat konfirmasi ini akan kami kirim besok pagi setelah rapat.

We will send this confirmation letter tomorrow morning after the meeting.

Apa yang akan kamu lihat di pameran itu?

What will you see at that exhibition?

Hasil pemeriksaan akan kami umumkan setelah semua data masuk.

We will announce the examination results after all the data arrives. (formal)

The careful order is akan kami kirim, not kami akan kirim inside this patient-oriented predicate. Actor-first Kami akan mengirim surat ini is a different voice construction.

Bisa expresses ability or circumstantial possibility

Bisa + actor + verb can mean that the actor has the ability or opportunity to perform the action.

Buku itu bisa saya baca tanpa bantuan.

I can read that book without help.

Surat ini bisa kami kirim hari ini jika ketua setuju.

We can send this letter today if the chair agrees.

Apa yang bisa kamu lihat dari lantai atas?

What can you see from the upper floor?

Kesalahan itu masih bisa kita perbaiki.

We can still correct that mistake.

The ability belongs to saya, kami, kamu, or kita, not to the inanimate patient. Object voice keeps the patient as pivot while the pronominal actor supplies the controller of the modal action.

Tidak and belum select different meanings

Tidak denies the event, habit, intention, or asserted relation. It does not imply that the event is expected later.

Buku itu tidak saya baca karena topiknya tidak relevan.

I did not read that book because its topic was not relevant.

Surat ini tidak kami kirim kepada media.

We are not sending this letter to the media.

Apa yang tidak kamu lihat dalam gambar pertama?

What do you not see in the first image?

Bagian terakhir sengaja tidak saya ubah.

I deliberately did not change the final section.

Belum means that an expected event has not occurred by the reference time.

Buku referensi itu belum saya baca karena baru tiba.

I have not read that reference book yet because it just arrived.

Surat ini belum kami kirim; alamatnya masih diperiksa.

We have not sent this letter yet; its address is still being checked.

Apa yang belum kamu lihat di kota ini?

What have you not seen yet in this city?

Nama peserta terakhir belum saya tulis di daftar.

I have not written the final participant's name on the list yet.

English not can translate both particles. Indonesian forces the speaker to distinguish simple denial from “not yet.”

💡
If the sentence naturally continues with “but later,” choose belum. If it simply rejects the event or habit, choose tidak.

Jangan creates a patient-oriented prohibition

In a negative directive, jangan precedes the addressee actor and the bare verb.

Buku itu jangan kamu baca keras-keras.

Do not read that book aloud.

Surat ini jangan kalian kirim sebelum diperiksa.

Do not send this letter before it is checked.

Foto itu jangan Anda unggah tanpa izin.

Do not upload that photo without permission. (formal/polite)

Apa pun yang kamu lihat, jangan kamu ceritakan kepada anak-anak.

Whatever you see, do not tell the children about it.

The addressee is expressed because the object-voice construction identifies who must refrain. Agentless Foto itu jangan diunggah is a di- passive prohibition with a generic addressee, not the same syntactic pattern.

Particle chains and scope

Tidak akan: negation over a prospective event

Buku itu tidak akan saya baca lagi.

I will not read that book again.

Surat ini tidak akan kami kirim tanpa persetujuan hukum.

We will not send this letter without legal approval.

Belum bisa: ability not yet available

Buku itu belum bisa saya baca karena belum dicetak.

I cannot read that book yet because it has not been printed.

Tulisan di layar belum bisa kami lihat dengan jelas.

We cannot see the writing on the screen clearly yet.

Sudah tidak: a newly established negative state

Majalah itu sudah tidak saya baca sejak berhenti berlangganan.

I no longer read that magazine since canceling the subscription.

Alamat lama itu sudah tidak kami gunakan.

We no longer use that old address.

Bisa saja tidak: a possible non-event

Bagian lampiran bisa saja tidak kamu baca kalau waktunya terbatas.

You can skip the appendix section if time is limited.

Surat ini bisa saja tidak kami kirim jika masalahnya selesai hari ini.

We might not send this letter if the issue is resolved today.

Compare tidak bisa kami kirim “we cannot send it” with bisa saja tidak kami kirim “we might not send it.” Particle order determines which meaning contains the negation; saja also makes the possibility reading explicit instead of inviting the question-like reading of bisa tidak ...? “can ... or not?”

Relative questions preserve particle order

The yang link does not change the internal object-voice order.

Apa yang sudah kamu lihat?

What have you seen?

Apa yang sedang kamu lihat?

What are you looking at?

Apa yang akan kamu lihat besok?

What will you see tomorrow?

Apa yang belum kamu lihat?

What have you not seen yet?

Apa yang tidak kamu lihat dalam rekaman itu?

What do you not see in that recording?

The particle follows yang and precedes kamu + lihat. English moves auxiliaries before its subject in questions; Indonesian does not move sudah, sedang, or akan into an English-like position.

Control and stativity restrictions

Volitional ingin or mau can precede the actor–verb unit. The preverbal pronoun normally supplies the person who wants to act.

Buku tentang sejarah itu ingin saya baca malam ini.

I want to read that history book tonight.

Surat ini mau kami kirim setelah makan siang.

We want to send this letter after lunch. (conversational)

This is clearer about control than Buku itu ingin dibaca Rina, which can leave the wanter structurally ambiguous. However, not every actor-oriented predicate behaves like a mobile particle. Berencana selects an actor subject, so use actor voice rather than inserting it before an object-voice actor.

Kami berencana mengirim surat ini setelah rapat.

We plan to send this letter after the meeting.

Stative predicates resist progressive sedang unless a developing interpretation is available.

Apa yang kamu ketahui tentang kejadian itu?

What do you know about that incident?

Informasi itu sudah saya ketahui sejak kemarin.

I have known that information since yesterday.

Apa yang sedang kamu tahu? is not the neutral equivalent of “What do you currently know?” because tahu is a state, not an unfolding action. Use saat ini kamu ketahui or simply kamu ketahui.

Bukan is not the default verbal negator

Use tidak for a denied event and belum for “not yet.” Bukan negates a noun phrase or creates an explicit correction.

Buku itu tidak saya baca.

I did not read that book.

Bukan buku itu yang saya baca, melainkan buku di sebelahnya.

It was not that book that I read, but the book next to it.

The second clause is grammatical because bukan contrasts buku itu with another noun phrase. It does not license Buku itu bukan saya baca as ordinary event negation.

Clitics remain attached inside particle chains

Bound ku- and kau- attach to the verb, while preceding particles remain separate.

Buku itu sudah kubaca sampai selesai.

I have read that book to the end. (written/compact)

Surat balasan itu belum kaukirim, bukan?

You have not sent that reply letter yet, have you? (written/compact)

Write sudah kubaca and belum kaukirim, not sudahku baca or belum kau kirim.

Common Mistakes

Moving the particle after the actor

❌ Buku itu baca sudah saya.

Incorrect—the aspect marker and actor must precede the bare verb in that order.

✅ Buku itu sudah saya baca.

I have already read that book.

Using bukan for simple verbal negation

❌ Buku itu bukan saya baca kemarin.

Incorrect for simple event negation—use tidak.

✅ Buku itu tidak saya baca kemarin.

I did not read that book yesterday.

Reversing the actor and prohibition

❌ Buku itu baca jangan kamu.

Incorrect—the prohibitive and actor must precede the bare verb in that order.

✅ Buku itu jangan kamu baca.

Do not read that book.

Applying progressive aspect to a stable state

❌ Apa yang sedang kamu tahu tentang kasus itu?

Aspectual mismatch—tahu is stative in this meaning.

✅ Apa yang kamu ketahui tentang kasus itu?

What do you know about that case?

Separating a bound proclitic

❌ Surat itu belum kau kirim.

Incorrect standard spelling when kau- is the bound actor form.

✅ Surat itu belum kaukirim.

You have not sent that letter yet. (written/compact)

Key Takeaways

  • The invariant order is patient + particle(s) + pronominal actor + bare verb.
  • Sudah, sedang, akan, bisa, tidak, belum, and jangan remain separate; the object-voice verb does not conjugate.
  • Particle order determines scope in tidak akan, belum bisa, sudah tidak, and bisa saja tidak.
  • Tidak negates an event, belum means “not yet,” and bukan belongs to nominal or explicit contrastive negation.
  • Volitional control, lexical stativity, and clitic attachment constrain combinations even when the broad template looks possible.
