Choose a meN- verb when the actor is the clause’s starting point in neutral or formal Indonesian: Saya membaca buku itu. Choose a bare root when a construction licenses it: a direct command (Baca buku ini), object voice after a preverbal pronoun (Buku itu saya baca), many colloquial actor-first statements (Gue baca bukunya), or a lexical root predicate such as makan, tidur, pergi, or tahu.
The key is not “long verb versus short verb.” Bare verbs are construction-licensed, not casually shortened versions of every prefixed verb. This page guides that choice and assumes the detailed allomorphy taught in meN- formation.
The quick decision
| Construction | Typical form | Example pattern |
|---|---|---|
| neutral/formal actor-centered statement | actor + meN- verb + patient | Rina membaca laporan itu |
| direct positive imperative | bare verb + patient | Baca laporan itu |
| object voice with first/second-person actor | patient + actor + bare verb | Laporan itu saya baca |
| Jakarta-influenced casual actor statement | actor + bare/colloquial verb | Gue baca laporannya |
| root predicate whose lexical form is already bare | root | makan, tidur, pergi, tahu |
Maya membaca artikel kesehatan itu sebelum menemui dokternya.
Maya reads the health article before seeing her doctor. (neutral actor voice)
Baca petunjuk pada halaman terakhir sebelum memasang alatnya.
Read the instructions on the last page before installing the device. (direct imperative)
Artikel kesehatan itu saya baca dua kali tadi malam.
I read that health article twice last night. (object voice)
Gue baca pesannya pas lagi nunggu kereta.
I read the message while I was waiting for the train. (regional: Jakarta-influenced; informal actor-root statement)
Choose meN- for neutral actor voice
Actor voice keeps the actor as the grammatical and discourse center. A transitive root typically appears with the appropriate meN- allomorph in neutral speech and edited prose.
Sari menulis ringkasan rapat untuk seluruh anggota tim.
Sari writes a meeting summary for all team members. (neutral actor voice)
Petugas memeriksa setiap tiket sebelum penumpang naik.
The officer checks every ticket before passengers board. (neutral actor voice)
Kami mengirimkan hasil pemeriksaan melalui surel resmi.
We send the examination results through official email. (formal actor voice)
Panitia memilih tiga rancangan untuk dipresentasikan besok.
The committee selects three designs to present tomorrow. (neutral actor voice)
Dosen menjelaskan perbedaan kedua teori dengan contoh baru.
The lecturer explains the difference between the two theories with a new example. (neutral actor voice)
The prefix is not always the visible string men-. It surfaces as mem-, men-, meng-, meny-, menge-, or me- according to the base, and some initial consonants undergo nasal substitution:
| Root | Actor-voice form | Not |
|---|---|---|
| baca | membaca | menbaca |
| tulis | menulis | mentulis |
| kirim | mengirim | mengkirim |
| pilih | memilih | mempilih |
| sapu | menyapu | mensapu |
These forms are one word. Do not write mem baca or detach the nasal material when switching construction.
Choose a bare root for direct positive commands
A direct positive imperative commonly uses the bare verb because the understood actor is the addressee and the directive construction supplies the force.
Tulis nama lengkapmu di kotak sebelah kiri.
Write your full name in the box on the left. (neutral direct command)
Kirim foto kuitansinya sebelum pukul lima sore.
Send a photo of the receipt before five in the afternoon. (neutral direct command)
Pilih satu jawaban yang paling sesuai.
Choose the one answer that fits best. (instruction)
Buka jendelanya sedikit supaya udara masuk.
Open the window a little so air can enter. (spoken directive)
Jangan baca pesan itu keras-keras di depan semua orang.
Don’t read that message aloud in front of everyone. (negative directive with jangan)
Using an actor-voice form as a bare direct order is generally unnatural:
❌ Membaca petunjuk keselamatan sebelum menyalakan mesin!
Incorrect as a direct command—the imperative construction calls for bare baca.
✅ Bacalah petunjuk penggunaan sebelum menghubungkan alat ke listrik.
Read the instructions before connecting the device to electricity. (formal written directive with -lah)
The prefix returns when the directive is embedded in a fuller polite structure with an explicit actor-centered predicate:
Mohon Anda membaca ketentuan tersebut dengan saksama.
Please read those provisions carefully. (formal request with explicit Anda)
Choose a bare root after the actor in object voice
When an identifiable patient leads and the actor is saya, kami, kita, kamu, Anda, or another tightly integrated pronoun, Indonesian uses actor + bare verb, not actor + meN- verb.
Buku itu saya baca selama perjalanan ke Surabaya.
I read that book during the trip to Surabaya. (object voice; topical patient)
Surat ini akan kami kirim setelah ketua menandatanganinya.
We will send this letter after the chair signs it. (formal object voice)
Bagian terakhir harus kamu tulis ulang dengan bahasa yang lebih jelas.
You must rewrite the final section in clearer language. (object voice)
Keputusan tersebut perlu Anda pertimbangkan sebelum rapat berikutnya.
You need to consider that decision before the next meeting. (formal-polite object voice)
Film yang kita tonton kemarin ternyata diangkat dari kisah nyata.
The film we watched yesterday turns out to be based on a true story. (object relative with bare tonton)
The actor is not merely a subject moved before a prefixed verb. Buku itu saya membaca mixes object-voice order with actor-voice morphology and is impossible for the intended reading.
❌ Laporan akhir itu saya menulis selama tiga minggu.
Incorrect hybrid—after saya in object voice, use bare tulis.
✅ Laporan akhir itu saya tulis selama tiga minggu penuh.
I wrote that final report over three full weeks. (object voice)
Colloquial actor + root is a separate pattern
Many speakers use actor-initial bare verbs in relaxed conversation: aku baca, gue kirim, dia pilih (informal; especially prominent in Jakarta-influenced Indonesian). The actor-first order separates this from patient-first object voice.
Aku baca ulasannya tadi, kayaknya tempat itu bagus.
I read the review earlier; that place seems good. (informal actor-root statement)
Gue kirim lokasinya lewat chat nanti.
I’ll send the location through chat later. (regional: Jakarta-influenced; informal)
Dia pilih yang warna biru karena ukurannya pas.
She chose the blue one because the size fits. (informal actor-root statement)
Kita cek harganya dulu sebelum pesan.
Let’s check the price before ordering. (informal collaborative proposal)
Aku enggak ngerti kenapa mereka ubah jadwalnya mendadak.
I don’t understand why they changed the schedule suddenly. (informal actor-root clauses)
This is a real colloquial construction, but productivity varies by verb, region, speaker, and discourse style. It does not create a rule “delete meN- whenever speaking.” A public statement, school essay, formal report, or careful interregional explanation normally retains actor voice morphology.
Saya akan mengirim lokasinya melalui pesan singkat.
I will send the location by text message. (neutral/careful)
Panitia mengubah jadwal karena pembicara utama berhalangan hadir.
The committee changed the schedule because the main speaker could not attend. (formal-neutral)
Some predicates are lexical roots, not dropped meN- forms
Many common intransitive or stative predicates occur as roots in every register. Do not assume every verb requires a corresponding meN- form.
Kami makan di warung dekat stasiun setiap Jumat.
We eat at the food stall near the station every Friday. (neutral lexical root predicate)
Anak-anak tidur lebih awal karena besok ada ujian.
The children go to sleep earlier because there is an exam tomorrow. (neutral lexical root predicate)
Rina pergi ke kantor cabang setelah makan siang.
Rina goes to the branch office after lunch. (neutral lexical root predicate)
Saya tahu jalan pintas menuju terminal lama.
I know a shortcut to the old terminal. (neutral stative root predicate)
Mereka duduk di tangga sambil menunggu pintu dibuka.
They sit on the stairs while waiting for the door to open. (neutral lexical root predicate)
Some related prefixed forms exist but add transitivity or a lexicalized meaning. Makan can stand alone or take food; memakan often profiles consuming a specified object and occurs readily in careful description.
Kami makan sebelum pertunjukan dimulai.
We eat before the performance begins. (ordinary activity)
Ulat itu memakan hampir seluruh daun muda.
The caterpillar consumes almost all the young leaves. (transitive actor voice)
The contrast cannot be predicted from English eat alone; it belongs to the Indonesian lexical family.
A four-way membaca/baca comparison
| Context | Natural choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| neutral statement | Rina membaca buku itu | actor voice |
| command | Baca buku itu | imperative licenses root |
| Jakarta-style casual statement | Gue baca buku itu | informal actor-root pattern |
| patient-first clause | Buku itu saya baca | object voice licenses root after actor |
Rina membaca buku panduan itu sebelum pelatihan dimulai.
Rina reads the guidebook before the training starts. (neutral statement)
Baca buku panduan ini sampai halaman dua puluh.
Read this guidebook through page twenty. (direct command)
Gue baca buku panduannya di bus tadi pagi.
I read the guidebook on the bus this morning. (regional: Jakarta-influenced; informal statement)
Buku panduan itu saya baca sebelum mengisi formulir pendaftaran.
I read that guidebook before completing the registration form. (object voice)
Common Mistakes
1. Dropping meN- at random
❌ meN- dapat dihapus dari semua verba tanpa mengubah konstruksi.
Incorrect rule—a bare root needs syntactic or lexical licensing.
✅ Dalam laporan resmi, petugas mencatat setiap perubahan pada sistem.
In the official report, the officer records every change to the system. (formal actor voice)
2. Retaining meN- after an object-voice actor
❌ Buku tebal itu saya membaca tadi malam sebelum tidur.
Incorrect hybrid—patient-first object voice requires bare baca after saya.
✅ Buku sejarah itu saya baca tadi malam sampai selesai.
I read that history book to the end last night. (object voice)
3. Using meN- in a direct command
❌ Menulis alamat surel Anda di baris paling bawah!
Incorrect as a direct command—use the bare imperative root.
✅ Tulis alamat surel Anda pada baris paling bawah.
Write your email address on the bottom line.
4. Inventing the wrong allomorph
❌ Petugas menbaca nomor seri dari layar komputer.
Incorrect formation—baca takes mem- to form membaca.
✅ Petugas membaca nomor seri dari layar komputer.
The officer reads the serial number from the computer screen.
5. Treating every root predicate as colloquial deletion
❌ Dalam ‘Mereka tidur’, tidur adalah bentuk informal dari *menidur*.
Incorrect analysis—tidur is an ordinary lexical root predicate; *menidur is not its neutral actor-voice counterpart.
✅ Mereka tidur di ruang tamu karena kamar sedang dicat.
They sleep in the living room because the bedroom is being painted.
Key Takeaways
- Neutral actor-centered transitive statements usually use the correct meN- allomorph.
- Direct commands and first/second-person object voice license a bare root.
- Jakarta-influenced casual actor-root statements are real but register- and verb-sensitive.
- Common predicates such as makan, tidur, pergi, and tahu are lexical roots, not automatically reduced meN- forms.
- Actor + meN- verb and patient + actor + bare verb represent different voice constructions, not free word-order variants.
