Positive Commands

An Indonesian positive imperative directs the listener to do something. The understood subject is normally “you,” so the command begins with the action: Buka pintu “Open the door.” With many transitive verbs, the command exposes the root that appears with meN- in an actor-voice statement.

Directness is adjustable. Attached -lah can make a command sound more deliberate or gently directive, tolong frames it as a request for help, and silakan politely invites or permits the listener to act. No single marker is always polite in every relationship; tone and situation still matter.

The simplest command: verb + complement

A plain verb can form a complete command. The addressee is understood from the speech situation.

Buka pintu depan sebelum tamunya tiba.

Open the front door before the guest arrives.

Duduk di kursi dekat jendela.

Sit in the chair near the window.

Tunggu saya di depan loket informasi.

Wait for me in front of the information counter.

Masuk lewat pintu samping gedung.

Enter through the building's side door.

Ambil payung hitam yang ada di dekat rak sepatu.

Take the black umbrella near the shoe rack.

These are neutral grammatical imperatives, but social force varies. Between friends in an obvious cooperative situation, a bare command can be ordinary. Directed at a customer or superior, the same form may sound abrupt unless softened.

💡
The missing subject is not an error. A command already identifies the addressee through the act of speaking to them, so Indonesian normally leaves “you” unspoken.

Transitive commands often use the root

In actor-voice statements, many transitive verbs carry a meN- form. In a direct imperative, the corresponding root commonly appears without meN-.

StatementRoot commandMeaning
Kamu membuka pintu.Buka pintu.Open the door.
Kamu membaca petunjuk.Baca petunjuk.Read the instructions.
Kamu menulis alamat.Tulis alamat.Write the address.
Kamu mengambil nomor.Ambil nomor.Take a number.
Kamu mengirim berkas.Kirim berkas.Send the file.

Baca petunjuk di layar sampai selesai.

Read the instructions on the screen to the end.

Tulis nomor pesananmu di sudut kanan atas.

Write your order number in the upper-right corner.

Kirim salinan paspormu melalui portal resmi.

Send a copy of your passport through the official portal.

Pilih jadwal yang paling sesuai dengan rencanamu.

Choose the schedule that best suits your plans.

The root is not “an infinitive,” because Indonesian has no infinitive conjugation. It is a form licensed by the imperative construction.

This does not mean stripping meN- from every word mechanically. Some intransitive or lexicalized verbs naturally retain their derived form, and public instructions may use a fuller verb phrase after polite framing.

Berjalanlah pelan-pelan karena lantainya licin.

Walk slowly because the floor is slippery.

Menyeberanglah hanya saat lampu pejalan kaki menyala.

Cross only when the pedestrian light is on.

Silakan mengisi formulir digital sebelum mengambil nomor antrean.

Please fill in the digital form before taking a queue number. (polite/formal)

The exact imperative behavior is partly lexical. Learn common commands as complete patterns rather than treating prefix removal as an automatic spelling operation.

Attached -lah

Add -lah directly to the command word: Bukalah. In many instructions it gives the directive a smoother, more deliberate shape; it can also add emphasis or solemnity. Calling it simply a “polite ending” is too crude.

Bukalah jendela agar udara segar bisa masuk.

Open the window so fresh air can come in.

Dengarkanlah penjelasan petugas sampai selesai.

Listen to the officer's explanation to the end.

Simpanlah tanda terima ini untuk keperluan garansi.

Keep this receipt for warranty purposes.

Ingatlah untuk mematikan kompor sebelum keluar.

Remember to turn off the stove before leaving.

Commands with -lah are common in written instructions, speeches, advice, and careful directives. In casual conversation, a bare verb or tolong + verb is often more natural.

Percayalah, kami sedang mencari jalan keluar terbaik.

Believe me, we are looking for the best solution.

Here percayalah is emphatic reassurance, not merely a softened practical request. Context determines whether -lah sounds gentle, firm, literary, or formal.

💡
Write -lah attached: bukalah, bacalah, dengarkanlah. It shapes the directive's tone, but respect comes from the whole utterance and relationship, not from the suffix alone.

Tolong: asking for help

Put tolong before the command when asking the listener to perform an action for you or for a practical need. It corresponds to “please” in many requests, but literally retains the idea of help.

Tolong buka jendela yang paling dekat dengan pintu.

Please open the window closest to the door.

Tolong tunggu di sini sementara saya mengambil dokumennya.

Please wait here while I get the document.

Tolong periksa kembali nama dan tanggal lahir Anda.

Please check your name and date of birth again.

Tolong kirim lokasinya lewat pesan pribadi.

Please send the location by private message.

The verb after tolong is often a root in a direct transitive request: tolong buka, tolong cek, tolong kirim. A fuller meN- verb also occurs in more formal or impersonal wording, but learners should not add it automatically.

Mohon membawa kartu identitas asli saat mengambil dokumen.

Please bring the original identity card when collecting the document. (formal)

Mohon is (formal) and common in notices, official correspondence, and service language. It is not needed in an everyday request between friends.

Silakan: inviting or permitting

Silakan politely gives the listener space or permission to act. It is ideal for welcoming a guest, offering a seat, inviting someone to begin, or guiding a customer.

Silakan masuk melalui pintu utama.

Please come in through the main door.

Silakan duduk sementara kami menyiapkan ruang konsultasi.

Please have a seat while we prepare the consultation room.

Silakan pilih salah satu menu yang tersedia.

Please choose one of the available menu options.

Silakan gunakan jaringan tamu selama berada di kantor kami.

Please use the guest network while you are at our office.

Compare the social meanings:

Tolong masuk dan bantu saya memindahkan meja ini.

Please come in and help me move this table.

Silakan masuk dan tunggu di ruang depan.

Please come in and wait in the front room.

The first asks for assistance; the second grants a courteous invitation. English often translates both with “please,” but Indonesian selects the word according to the relationship and purpose.

Pronouns, names, and forms of address

The addressee is normally omitted. An overt kamu can contrast one listener with another or make a directive firmer; it is not the neutral way to translate every English imperative.

Kamu tunggu di sini; Raka ikut saya ke dalam.

You wait here; Raka, come inside with me. (firm/contrastive)

Bapak silakan menunggu di ruang sebelah.

Sir, please wait in the next room. (polite)

Mbak Rani, tolong tandatangani formulir ini.

Ms. Rani, please sign this form.

Anak-anak, simpan tas kalian di rak belakang.

Children, put your bags on the rack at the back.

With a vocative name or address term outside the clause, use a comma. A title can also function as the polite subject inside the clause, as in Bapak silakan menunggu.

Avoid assuming that Anda automatically makes a command polite. Anda tutup pintu sekarang can sound quite forceful. Politeness depends on wording, intonation, and hierarchy.

Silakan Anda periksa kembali rincian pesanan sebelum membayar.

Please check the order details again before paying. (formal/polite)

Command punctuation and intonation

A command may end with a period in calm written instructions or an exclamation mark when urgency or strong force is intended. The exclamation mark is not obligatory.

Simpan dokumen ini di tempat yang aman.

Keep this document in a safe place.

Keluar dari gedung sekarang!

Leave the building now!

Harap matikan telepon selama pertunjukan berlangsung.

Please turn off phones during the performance. (formal notice)

Harap is (formal) and common in public instructions. It can sound impersonal rather than warmly polite.

Positive commands differ from prohibitions. Use jangan for “do not”; do not simply put tidak before a positive imperative. See prohibitions for the full negative pattern.

Jangan tutup pintu itu sebelum semua orang keluar.

Do not close that door before everyone has left.

Common Mistakes

Keeping actor-voice meN- mechanically

❌ Membuka pintu depan sekarang!

Incorrect as the intended ordinary direct command—use the root buka.

✅ Buka pintu depan sekarang!

Open the front door now!

Many common transitive commands expose the root even though the corresponding statement uses membuka.

Removing every prefix mechanically

❌ Seberanglah hanya saat lampu pejalan kaki menyala.

Incorrect—do not mechanically strip meN- from intransitive menyeberang.

✅ Menyeberanglah di tempat ini hanya saat lampu pejalan kaki menyala.

Cross here only when the pedestrian light is on.

Some derived or lexicalized predicates retain their morphology. Prefix behavior must be learned with the verb and construction.

Writing -lah separately

❌ Baca lah petunjuk keselamatan di belakang pintu.

Incorrect spelling—the clitic -lah attaches to the command word.

✅ Bacalah petunjuk keselamatan di belakang pintu.

Read the safety instructions behind the door.

Write bacalah, not baca lah.

Adding kamu to every imperative

❌ Kamu tolong kamu kirim alamat hotelnya.

Incorrect and repetitive—the addressee does not need to be stated twice.

✅ Tolong kirim alamat hotelnya kepada saya.

Please send me the hotel's address.

Use an overt pronoun only for contrast, emphasis, or a socially appropriate form of address.

Treating -lah as guaranteed politeness

❌ Diamlah sekarang!

This remains forceful; adding -lah does not make it automatically polite.

✅ Tolong tenang sebentar agar semua orang bisa mendengar.

Please be quiet for a moment so everyone can hear.

Choose tolong, silakan, an address term, and an appropriate tone when courtesy matters.

Key Takeaways

  • A positive command normally omits the understood addressee: Buka pintu.
  • Many transitive commands use the root instead of the actor-voice meN- form, but prefix removal is not mechanical.
  • Attach -lah to the verb; it can smooth or emphasize a directive but does not guarantee politeness.
  • Use tolong to request help and silakan to invite or permit.
  • Do not add “you” automatically; use a pronoun, name, or title only when discourse and social context call for it.
