The order described on the forms page is fixed, but speakers choose how many layers to use according to meaning and context. A concrete conversation may need a derived person noun plus possession and case; an official report may package an entire process into an abstract noun. Natural Hungarian is not the longest possible word: it is the form that keeps the intended participant or event easy to identify.
This page therefore starts from communicative jobs—identifying people, referring to possessed groups, naming abstract processes, and managing discourse—rather than from English suffix translations.
Referring to people through a role
Derivation often names a person by an activity or function. Once that role is established as a noun, ordinary inflection says how many people are involved and what their role is in the sentence.
Az új szerkesztőkkel délután átbeszéljük a következő szám témáit.
This afternoon we'll discuss the topics for the next issue with the new editors.
Szerkeszt-ő-k-kel first creates the participant noun szerkesztő “editor,” then adds plural and instrumental case. English uses a lexical noun plus “with”; Hungarian uses an outer case ending on the completed role noun.
A jelentkezőknek péntekig kell elküldeniük a portfóliójukat.
Applicants must send in their portfolio by Friday.
Jelentkez-ő-k-nek is structurally transparent, but jelentkező is also a conventional noun meaning “applicant.” It need not mean someone literally applying at the moment of speaking. This is an early lesson in lexicalization: recognizing -ő helps comprehension, while the established context determines the precise dictionary meaning.
Referring to a possessed set
If the relevant people or things belong to “my,” “your,” or “our” set, Hungarian uses possessed plurality rather than ordinary plural -k. The case required by the clause comes outside the possession complex.
A tanácsadóinkkal videóhívásban egyeztetünk a költözésről.
We're consulting our advisers by video call about the move.
The word tanácsadó-i-nk-kal packages “with our advisers.” The derivation identifies a role; -i- marks multiple possessed people; -nk identifies us as possessor; -kal marks the relation “with.” English distributes the same information across three words and a preposition.
A régi fényképeinkből összeállítottunk egy rövid családi videót.
We put together a short family video from our old photographs.
Here there is no derivation to recover inside fényképeinkből, but the same outer architecture applies: possessed plurality and possessor marking precede elative -ből. Do not force a derivational story onto every long word. Some bases are simple or compound lexemes; their grammatical layers still remain orderly.
Naming activities and abstract qualities
Event and quality nouns let speakers discuss an action or property as a thing. This is useful when an event itself is the topic, cause, object of evaluation, or item in a procedure.
A foglalás lemondásáról e-mailben is küldünk visszaigazolást.
We also send confirmation by email about the cancellation of the booking.
Lemond-ás-á-ról consists of a prefixed verbal base, event-noun derivation, third-person possession, and delative case. The possessor phrase a foglalás identifies what is cancelled. The whole derived event becomes the topic introduced by English “about.”
A felület használhatóságát látássérült résztvevőkkel is tesztelték.
The interface's usability was also tested with visually impaired participants.
Használ-ható-ság-á-t recursively derives “usable” and then “usability,” before possession and accusative. This abstract word is normal in design and research contexts. In a casual exchange about an app, however, a finite clause is lighter: könnyű-e használni “whether it is easy to use.”
Hungarian allows recursive derivation, but selection remains lexical. An ending that makes sense in English may yield an unattested, comic, or needlessly heavy Hungarian form. Dictionaries and exposure—not the visual possibility of another suffix—tell you whether a new lexeme is established.
Concrete and abstract layers in one scene
The same order works for physical objects and abstract concepts, but context determines which layer deserves attention.
A javítóműhelyben a szerelőink megvizsgálták a készülékek sérüléseit.
At the repair shop, our mechanics examined the damage to the devices.
Szerelőink is a lexicalized participant noun with possessed plural marking. Sérüléseit is an event/result noun with third-person possessed plural and accusative case: the devices have multiple damaged areas or instances of damage. Neither word should be decoded by assigning a separate English word to each surface vowel.
A döntés kiszámíthatatlansága több befektetőt is elbizonytalanított.
The unpredictability of the decision made several investors uncertain.
The long abstract noun is best approached as kiszámíthatatlan “unpredictable” → kiszámíthatatlanság “unpredictability” → kiszámíthatatlansága “its/the ...'s unpredictability.” The apparent complexity records a derivational history plus one inflectional relation.
A short dialogue: choosing a natural amount of packaging
– Beszéltél már a kivitelezőinkkel a terasz felújításáról? – Igen, de a megvalósíthatóságát még vizsgálják. – Vagyis még nem tudják, hogy meg lehet-e csinálni? – Pontosan.
– Have you spoken to our contractors about renovating the terrace yet? – Yes, but they're still examining its feasibility. – So they still don't know whether it can be done? – Exactly.
Kivitelezőinkkel efficiently identifies “with our contractors,” and felújításáról turns an activity into the topic of discussion. Megvalósíthatóságát is natural professional vocabulary, but the next speaker deliberately paraphrases it as meg lehet-e csinálni. Both are grammatical; the clause is more accessible in conversation.
This dialogue also shows outer -e. It attaches to the finite predicate lehet and stands outside its inflection. It does not belong to megvalósíthatóságát, even though English places “whether” before the clause.
Formal versus informal packaging
Dense nominal derivation is frequent in (formal/academic/administrative) writing because it lets the writer background agents and make a process into the subject of evaluation. Everyday (informal) speech usually favors finite clauses and explicit participants.
A támogatási rendszer fenntarthatóságának felülvizsgálata szeptemberben kezdődik.
The review of the sustainability of the support system begins in September. (formal)
Szeptemberben megnézik, hogy hosszú távon fenn lehet-e tartani a támogatási rendszert.
In September they'll look at whether the support system can be maintained in the long term. (informal/neutral)
The formal version contains nested derived nouns and possessive relations. The conversational version distributes the same message across finite and infinitival predicates. English tolerates strings of abstract nouns too, so English-speaking learners sometimes overproduce Hungarian nominalizations. Choose them when processes and classifications are the point—not simply because Hungarian can build them.
Particles add discourse meaning outside the word
After the complete inflected form, is includes an alternative and sem excludes one under negation. Moving the particle inside the suffix chain is impossible; moving its host can change what is added or negated.
A vidéki kirendeltségeinknek is elküldtük az új útmutatót.
We sent the new guide to our regional branch offices too.
A legrészletesebb útmutatóban sem találtam választ erre a kérdésre.
I couldn't find an answer to this question even in the most detailed guide.
The first is includes the regional branches among recipients. The second sem makes even the most promising source fail to yield an answer. The particles scope over a completed case-marked phrase; they are discourse operators rather than another nominal ending.
Lexical restrictions and misleading resemblances
Not every final string is a productive boundary. Irat “document” is related historically and synchronically in a word family to ír “write,” but it has short i, a specialized meaning, and limited productivity as a pattern. Írat, with long í, is a causative finite form meaning “has something written.” Likewise, újság normally means “newspaper,” not a compositionally generated “newness.”
A közjegyző elkérte az iratainkat, majd lemásoltatta őket.
The notary asked for our documents and then had them photocopied.
Here iratainkat behaves as the plural possessed form of the lexical noun irat. Segment its grammatical outside correctly, but do not reinterpret the established base each time.
Common Mistakes
❌ A tanácsadóink is beszéltünk a szerződésről.
Incorrect for ‘we spoke with our advisers too’: English ‘with’ cannot be left unmarked, and the bare phrase competes as a subject.
✅ A tanácsadóinkkal is beszéltünk a szerződésről.
We spoke about the contract with our advisers too.
❌ A rendszer könnyű használhatóságú, ezért gyorsan megtanultam.
Awkward English-style nominal packaging in everyday speech.
✅ A rendszert könnyű használni, ezért gyorsan megtanultam a kezelését.
The system is easy to use, so I quickly learned how to operate it.
❌ A szerelőkimtől még nem kaptam választ.
Incorrect: ordinary plural -k cannot precede the first-person possessive ending.
✅ A szerelőimtől még nem kaptam választ.
I haven't received an answer from my mechanics yet.
❌ Az irat szóban hosszú í-t ejtünk, mert az ír igéből származik.
Incorrect: the lexical noun irat has short i despite its relationship to ír.
✅ Az irat szó rövid i-vel kezdődik.
The word irat begins with a short i.
Key Takeaways
- Derived role nouns take outer plural, possession, and case just like other nouns.
- Possessed plurality uses -i-, not ordinary plural -k, before the possessor marker.
- Abstract derivation is valuable when an event or quality is the topic; finite clauses are often clearer in conversation.
- Is, sem, and question -e stand outside completed inflection and contribute scope or discourse meaning.
- Long words are transparent only after separating lexicalized bases, productive derivation, and grammatical inflection.
